I have used 8 quarts of Aisin WS transmission fluid to flush my 89K miles 2013 Volvo XC 60 transmission.
IMPORTANT: Do not forget to set the final level with the engine running since the fluid amount in the sump is lower than with the engine stopped, otherwise you will drain too much fluid.

Make sure you look at diagnostics before setting level that it's 50c-60c in transmission or it's going to be tears before bedtime.

This transmission is the Aisin Warner TF81SC or also AW21 its used in Peugoet, citreon , landrover , mazda , ford . Typically 2007-2016 , good transmission when oil is replaced every 40000km the filter replacement is a big big big day , remove transmission and split the case to change it . Common issues are valve body piston and soleniods contaminated , speed sensors attrack the metal particals im cant remember if theres an internal magnet . So 40000km oil changes or sooner is an absolute must .

Once the pump is running, fluid recirculates through the torque converter even if it is not spinning. The fluid flow is constant thought all the system.

Hello! Many thanks! for a valuable Video. Do you know if the job you do, on your Gearbox, is done the same way on my Automatic Gearbox, which is called, TF-71SC? Then I want to ask you what is the name of your diagnostic tool, with which you check the temperature of the gearbox oil? Thanks! From Tommy Bertilsson from Sweden

@BUTTEWORKS
@BUTTEWORKS Год назад
Thank you. I run the engine until transmission fluid is at 50 degrees which I monitor with the computer connected to the OBDII port and once it is at 50 degrees I remove the setting plug and let it drain until nothing else comes out. Important, engine running all the time and in neutral.

I have a 2011 XC60 T6 with 170800 miles on it. I have asked dealer about transmission fluid replacement for my XC60, but they told me "it is life time so don't need to replace it." They don't recommend to do it. Hence, the transmission fluid must be very dirty now. I did not experience any transmission problem and the car shifts gears without any problem. I intend to keep the car for another two years since this car runs well (I do regular oil change with synthetic oil) with quick acceleration and very quiet engine running on highway or on local street. I don't think it is a good idea to drain/fill the transmission fluid at this stage (although I really want to have fresh transmission fluid for my car). What is your opinion about this issue? Thank you so much for you response!
@BUTTEWORKS
@BUTTEWORKS 10 месяцев назад
In my opinion, if you car would be designed to run a lifetime with the same engine oil, would you change it regularly?. I would do. Specially because I to have may cars for the very long run, so I want engine and transmissions to be clean and had fresh fluid. I see the color and viscosity of the old fluid, and it is not the same as new.
@hskujama

Thanks for the quick response. Transmission fluid is just just like engine oil that needs to be changed regularly. It is hard to find a local trustworthy mechanic who can perform the job like you did (excellent and professional work)!@@BUTTEWORKS

Don t trust the manufacturer. He want you to buy. Oil viscosity deteriorate,whatever you do. Even by sitting. Heat is the main factor. Changing oil will not harm at all. I have a cvt and nisssn told me not necessary. Don t care, I have asked to change it. Oil cannot damage. Bad oil can.

Why do you have to do it when the transmission fluid is at a certain degrees
@BUTTEWORKS
@BUTTEWORKS Год назад
Transmission fluid expands in heat and in order to receive accurate results, it must be under normal operating conditions. If the fluid is checked when the engine is cold, you may get false results indicating the fluid is low.

I have a 2010 xc60 T6 3.0 turbo. Volvo says 7.1 quarts full. So your telling me to drain fluid to add 4 quart of fresh ATF then drain it again to add 4 more quarts? That would only leave 4 quarts of fresh ATF instead of the 7.1quarts required
@BUTTEWORKS
@BUTTEWORKS 5 месяцев назад
You can't drain all 7.1 quarts since most of them is in the torque converter, cooler, hoses etc... this is a flushing. You can do that flushing multiple times until the trained fluid is red, then you know it is pretty much all new.

Why do you do a flush instead of drain/fill? I always hear people say not to flush. Thanks
@BUTTEWORKS
@BUTTEWORKS 11 месяцев назад
When you drain you do not remove the fluid in the torque converter, radiator, hoses etc, just the oil in the pan. So flushing is a way to remove all that fluid or most of it. Never head a reason why not to flush. Even Volvo flush their transmission. GM flushed my truck transmission the first time I brought it to have it changed. Common practice.

Hey man, recently my xc60 broke down, I got a "service transmission" warning ⚠️ and soon after it wasn't drivable. I discovered a major leak from one of the transmission lines that goes to the oil cooler. How much tranny fluid do I need to top it up? 3 or 4 quarts? Thx so much.
@BUTTEWORKS

@@BUTTEWORKS can you please be a bit more clear, what do you mean by "keep adding until starts to come out"? what starts to come out?
@BUTTEWORKS
@BUTTEWORKS Год назад
@@vanboy20078 A you see in the video at the bottom of the transmission there is a plug with a built in pipe and an small screw inside the plug. The pipe sets the level, meaning that if you remove the little bolt in the center of the big plug, oil will come out until oil is bellow the level of the pipe. No matter how much fluid you add, if that bolt is removed it will come out that hole. Now start the engine, remove the little bolt inside the plug and add oil until it start coming our of the little bolt hole that connect with the pipe. Do this procedure with the engine running. If you have a way to measure the transmission temperature, wait until transmission temperature is at around 55 Celsius, put the bolt back on and stop the car. Done.

@@vanboy20078 Yes, because I already had oil in the system and and I just needed to set the final level min 9:00. You said you lost oil and don't know how much. Or just add as much as you think you lost, start the engine and remove the plug to set the final level.

It will take more time and you are adding fluid directly to the pan from the filling plug so you may be draining clean fluid you just added via the small plug not letting it mix with the remaining fluid in the system. Better drain and close, add fluid, let it mix while shifting gears and repeat.

I’m driving a week or two between drain and fill so the new fluid circulates and blends through the torque converter. Around 3.5L comes out and 3.5L remains inside mostly in the torque converter. So doing 2-3 drains and fills at the same time, the new oil is drained right after it’s filled and the 50% of dirty oil still in the torque converter.
