Great job - done this before on my other highlander but this preps me for the easy job for my other one. thanks - one thing to remember - when the belt is off turn the idler, alternator, tensioner and water pump pulleys and check for smoothness. Perfect time to see if there is roughness in bearings etc on those pulleys which you then might want to change at the same time or at a later date. Forget about replacing the tensioner from what I have heard (huge job) but you can replace the pulley and bearings easy enough for the tensioner and idler. thanks for posting

It's almost like you had this video ready the moment I had my belt shoot out the other day. Might give this a try!

Very helpful video, I might add if you doing the job on an older Highlander, get a replacement push pin because the old one is likely brittle and will break during removal due to years of heat & aging. Also, I found a small hex / allen wrench works well to pin the belt tensioner pulley for belt removal, but I had to use the wrench again to provide extra slack to install the belt. There is not a lot of room to work with even with the tire and cover removed. Take pictures before above and below so you know how to route it - my Haynes manual showed an extra idler pulley for the 3.5L engine so that was wrong. As always, double check your work to ensure the belt is in the pulley groves. Appreciative and always learning.

Thanks for taking the time to post this. Tight camera angles, and great information/drawing. Ive done several on the 1GRFE- Tacoma and 4runner, but not this engine.

Rather than using a combination wrench to relieve belt tension and using the pin to immobilize the tensioner, I found it easier to use a breaker bar and socket on the hex (where hole is for the pin) to release tension. You'll have enough leverage that you can quickly slip the belt out of the way, and then just release the breaker bar. Route the new belt on all pulleys and top idler, then use the breaker bar and socket again to slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley.

Should you replace the tensioner and idler at the same time?
