I could not find any videos explaining the process of removing the pitman arm for a 2014-2019 Chevy Duramax / 2015-2019 GMC Sierra HD 4WD. Here is my process for how I removed the pitman and idler arm, yes, it may not be perfect, but for anyone else covered in rust and grease cursing the lords name, I hope this helps.
Pitman Arm Boot: GM 26000985
Pitman Arm Puller: #57170
Good luck on the job!

Just putting another comment on here to say This method really works!! mine took a little extra umph lots of heat and a cut off wheel for some deep deep edge cuts. Came flying when it did come off! Great video Great info! Thanks again!

Thank you Derek! I put it off for months with the parts sitting in the truck, I was dreading it. Just not an easy job, but with all the parts and the right tools it’ll only take an afternoon. There is a rubber bushing/seal between the pitman arm and the steering box that was ripped on mine. I had to order that in, otherwise just a tedious step by step process.

Good info , thanks. Your truck is clean underneath, no frame rust unlike my 18. Lower rad hose looks to be a better design too. I just did my idler at 131k so yeah, I get it. Tks

How did you get the steering box pushed up enough to get a pulled on there. On my Chevy I cannot get the clearance.

Hi Robert, I apologize for the late reply. I have been in Bridgeport the last two weeks, If I remember correctly, to push up the steering box I removed two bolts closest to the front end of the truck and left one lose on the back as a pivot. There are three total bolts that hold the steering box on.

I used the bar from my Jack and another hack to hold it up in place... Pain in the ass but it helped

Just would like to add that the pitman arm seal that he listed as buying does not work… it was way too small.

How much of a struggle was it with the ball joint puller to remove the pitman arm? Because i have the same tool and it ain't coming off. For context my truck came out of Canada and the rotors were damn near welded on and had to use a sledge hammer a lot to remove them. Maybe that's my problem.

Hi Tim, I apologize for the late reply. I am very lucky to be down here in the desert of the US where the only problem we have is paint peeling from the summer heat. I could not imagine trying to do this job with any significant amount of rust. There was already a crazy amount of pressure holding that pitman arm on the steering box. I think in your situation, removing the steering rod at the firewall of the truck and removing all three bolts on the steering box will allow you more clearance to get a better puller tool attached. Penetrant, a couple taps, heat, and repeat. Be mindful of the computer attached to the steering box; almost everything on the truck has some sort of external motherboard/chip attached to it and the steering box was one of them. The wrong amount of heat or shock to that area may lead to more damage than it's worth.

@brandonjr9367 thanks for the reply! I did finally get it off took a solid 5 hours of work! But I did use the same method plus the grinder and a cut off wheel! Couple of extremely deep cuts just barely nicked 1 tine on the gear box. And torched it many times but the last torching took 4 constant minutes with that ball joint puller fully cranked tight. I had the nut on just enough to use it and nit ruin the threads. The arm came exploding off. Loud enough it made the neighbors who were outside look over verbally make sure I was good! Your video helped alot! And it definitely was the method to use! Damn Canada truck just had to go to the extra mile. Thanks!

Good point, I didn’t know what to expect at first to be honest. I wasn’t thinking of making a video about it until I actually got the pitman arm out without taking out the steering box. I was hoping the information I had after getting everything removed would be helpful to someone.
