Bayern survives a stewards' inquiry to win the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park on November 1, 2014. Toast of New York finishs second, California Chrome third.
Yes, and so was the only other horse in the race who was going to make Bayern work for the lead. Definite DQ. The California stewards are fairly crappy in general, but this was a very special call, even by their tawdry standards.
I am a devoted fan of horse racing and have been watching it for years. I saw Gate Dancer disqualified in the first Breeders Cup Classic for doing far less. Out of the gate Bayern took a sharp left and kept on going for several strides, knocking Shared Belief into the only other speed horse, Moreno. So, he got a lone lead and never faded like he does when challenged on the lead, which Moreno was sure to do if he hadn't been slammed because of Bayern's actions, which appeared deliberate. I was not a fan of CC or SB but after this, I believe CC, who won seven races in a row and ran well in the Classic, deserves to be Three Year Old of the Year and Main Sequence HOY.
BAYERN's jockey did a real mess in the start: hit hard SHARED BELIEF and V. E. DAY, and this late hit MORENO, the expected front runner along with BAYERN in the race. I just can't believe that BAYERN hadn't been disqualified. That was a monstruosity...
Considering the fact that I've seen a (much) more horrendous accident with a stunt like Bayern's that caused a horse to flip over the hedges on the other side of the track and permanently paralyze the jockey from the neck down... This really should have been a disqualification... No matter who was coming in second. No matter what else, this could bring more incidents like this.
So close TOAST!!Wow a British horse to do that,i thought his price was an insult after his close run behind Shared Belief but it gave me good e.w returns,and what a great ride from Spencer for once,what a way to finish his career.
Was a great race. We all know Bayern HAS the speed, period and can maintain it. BUT if you watch that last turn...only the top three horses advanced and moved forward to fight. The rest faded way back left in the dust. Congratulations to Bayern, Toast of N.Y. and California Chrome!! :D The Best of the Best sure did have a chance this time!
Shared Belief lost all chance because of Bayern's apparently deliberate broadside. SB may have been the best of the best but we'll never know, will we? We do know Bayern faded to last when challenged by another speed horse several times. Moreno was also slammed out of his chance to show he's faster than Bayern.
Parker Wheat If Bayern CAN get in the clear from out of the gate he ALWAYS goes up to take the lead. He's a lot faster than Shared Belief. go to SB's spec chart at the Breeders cup and read. Chrome's speed is faster, too, than SB's. And all three that won the BCC have made ALOT...many many millions of dollars. SB hasn't made crap yet. Not yet. He needs some GOOD grade 1 races and WIN first. Go to the Breeders cup page and click on each horse and it will tell you their speed, what they've earned and what they've won. SB could never beat out Toast, Chrome or Bayern unless they were boxed in to begin with. THEN SB can zoom up easy of course. But SB's history isn't that good. Not good enough for the Classic. They don't work him enough and he doesn't have many grade wins. And Moreno is considered DANGEROUS in any race. LOL He's good for spooking FAST to the left or right and bumping anything in his way! LOL If it was a race just between Bayern and Shared Belief....SB would be left in the dust. In the PA Derby......they blocked California Chrome in from the start and Bayerns jockey saw that CC was the target and just took off......to win. Chrome was boxed in the whole race. Don't know why jockey's do that crap but they do. There's always bumping but the Stewards can see if it's minor or something that would upset the results of that horses run......and in this case they didn't. I'm sure Bayern will take horse of the year. SB doesn't have enough Grade races under his belt yet. Time will tell.
+RedBev59 I congratulate Bayern even though I'm a Chromie. Was so great to see him NOT boxed in this time at the start. He, Bayern, can move. He's got some high gears there WHEN he is clear to do it. I'm glad he wasn't boxed in this time and Could do it. Bayern is awesome. CC can just pace in the middle then kick in high gear coming around that last turn. I was VERY proud of Chromes race. Anybody taking off from gates 1,2,3 and 4 HAVE to head right over to the RIGHT...THAT always causes something to happen in every race. They should move the darn gate UP past that opening.......and then ALL horses can come out of the gate STRAIGHT. weird set up. I think Moreno bumped SB more than Bayern did.....he's dangerous...Moreno.
+Parker Wheat SB and Moreno had the WHOLE race to get up and take it. Any time they wanted to. They didn't. SB was in the clear and he didn't. What happens at the start of a race doesn't count. OR in CC's Belmont race it would have been brought to the Stewards attention. At the start all hell lets loose ALOT. Nothing new.
Great to see the chrome come back to his best, he will improve from this and look forward to seeing him next year. it wasn't a bad derby and preakness after all .
Here it is the day of the Pegasus World Cup 2018 about to be run and Toast of New York is back to racing at age 7! He ran his heart out in this BC and could, maybe should, have been named the winner. Although the field is deep and the Horse of The Year(Gun Runner) is the favorite, I can't help but root for this old boy to win the richest race in the world today.
Had an each way on Toast and a reverse forecast on Toast and Chrome... so it cost me quite a bit of money that decision being overturned... however I feel it was the correct decision.... Chrome & Toast were quite magnificent and hats off to Baffert and Bayern.... another great show put on by the yanks... roll on next year
Out of chair and was yelling my lungs out for California Chrome. He ran a hell of a race. Contrary to some of these comments (and I see one just deleted his), no Jockey can predict or control a horse from breaking bad. There was no intent by Garcia it just happens. Mike Smith knows better. Been a part of this game a long long time. Horses get bumped out of the gate all the time and yes this was a bit of a train wreck start but plenty of time for horses to recover. Very rarely in big races stewards will take a horse down. Again the word is INTENT. That's horse racing people.

Well said! Chrome like Bailey said was still a race away from a Peak performance. PA Derby showed Bayern was in form and Baffert had him working well for this.
4+ years later and this race still pisses me off...Bayern by the way never won another race, Shared Belief never lost another one until he broke down in the CT classic.
Shared Belief got knocked out of this onee early. But having said that he simply did not grow up to be as large as his rivals and as his 3 y.o. season wore on, his winning margins generally became smaller.
I checked xpressbet replays on 2 inquiry views. One close up and another from zoom out view. Zoom out view is the one shown here but it is much less obvious than the close-up. Gate 7 shift 3 lanes in first 3 seconds impeding the 6 and 4 (5 had delayed start that he was not affected) Granted that Bayern did run well the rest of the way and showed gutsy finish at the end it is VERY controversial start. In this unclear video, just check the gap between the 8 and 7 during the first 3 sec.
The year had a good group of 3 year olds who beat each other on any given day. Most of the horses have won at least 2 or 3 Grade 1 $1 million races. Toast of New York and Chome needed a couple of yards more 2 win but Bayern dug in like a champion. Bayern Horse of the Year 2014.
You cannot say Bayern won fair and square and CC had more victories and more Grade I wins. There should be a race to find out who is best and invite all of the first five horses to a neutral site.
I wanted to wait quite a few months to comment on this as emotions were running high after Bayern survived the inquiry. Yes, he should have been disqualified. Besides his start he ran a great race, but what he did out of the gate directly impacted the field. We'll never know who would have won had the entirety of the race been clean, but we will have to accept Bayern as the 2014 Classic winner.
Aside from Beyern breaking in at that start, Moreno also broke outward toward Shared Belief appearing to hit/brush the gate then runs into traffic shortly after the start. I would say he had very bad racing luck this day. Unfortunately he was Beyern's only real speed challenger and the pace of the race was changed by his bad luck. To slow down the video Go and hit the pause button at 0.03 when Moreno appears to brush the gate and at 0.04 Moreno breaks outward toward Shared Belief and again at 0.11 when he runs into traffic.

Was NEVER so Happy to see the General Public have so much Shared Belief, which they usually do with the favorite. Just because he was undefeated but missed the series. He was Always an Underlay bet and anyone that has played this sport would of told you that. Chrome was a race away but his Santa Anita Derby win will Always be Special. Chrome finished 6th to Bayern in PA Derby leading up to this and Bayern won a favorable post position. All Garcia had to do was hold on for the ride on the rail
agreed, that was a potential train wreck at the start and it was Bayern that was causing it. thank god there were experienced jockeys out there or it would have been a mess. too bad Bafferts first win is such a mess, he deserved a better win.
Was a clean win. They showed the video coming out of the gate......SB had ALOT of room to move over right then. SB had the speed to do it. He just didn't have the kick to do it Mike Smith said. Bayern IS the speed king. And can maintain it. That's what his game is. Chrome has the kick in the end but all three horses that places were ALONE in that race....none of the horse could catch them once they rounded that last turn....those 3 kicked in and moved right on and left the others in the dust fading away. Watch the video so you can see for yourself. I think what they should do is move that darn Post Gate up more up past that opening. THAT would eliminate a lot. That's how Chrome got boxed in the Triple Crown and PA derby. Having gate position 1,2,3 sucks. Couldn't move. What a crappy place to put that Post Gate!
too bad we wont ever know. but I see where the stewrads were coming from. it would not have affetcted the race outcome. and even if it would have the race would stand but the jockey would be penalized. so all in all just another day at the races.
And obviously the "fix" was on...not only Bayern, but with Toast Of New York as well. It's obvious both connections of those horses conspired to make sure not only Shared Belief had no chance, but Moreno and all the horses 6 in. Complete BS and a sham. Lost a lot...and I mean a lot of respect for the Breeder's Cup today.

Well, it explains on the Breeders Cup website about how they come to the conclusion of Horse of The Year. It's all about points, Grade 1 wins and money won. Chrome as of yesterday has won over $4million. So you never know.
It's racing. Chome has no excuse this time. He waited 2 long 2 make his move. Bayern, Chome and Shared B. are from this track. Bayern is a front runner and nobody challenged him early on so he must be laughing after the race wondering where was Moreno. Bayern won the BIG ONE so he should get Horse of the Year honors. Tonalist I don't think liked the track but the british horse Toast of New York ran a great race.
AND if you watch the race video at Breeders Cup....it showed ONLY Chrome, Toast and Bayern kicking in and moving on that last turn to FIGHT for it to the finish line. The rest faded in the dust........Tonalist was last place?? Chrome had a clean race this time from a good post gate position and he could do his thing. He went right up and can easily maintain his position to the end. Only CC and Toast kicked in to try to catch Bayern. Nobody CAN catch Bayern if he gets up front. The horse is fast and has the ability to hold it. whew. Was a good race and a fair one. The others just didn't have any "get up and go". You never know with horses.

I demand a race between the first five (including the fifth place Tonalist, on a neutral track, to see who really is the best. And leave a gap in the starting gate between each horse so the same tactic cannot be tried again.
But couldn't get past Chrome.........sb faded and just held fourth behind Chrome then faded to fifth for awhile and then booted up to take fourth place . Bayern, Toast and Chrome went right up at the beginning to first,second and third and held it. NONE of the others could catch up TO pass them. Then at the final turn...the front 3 kicked in higher gears and took off to the finish line......the rest, including SB were a good 3 horse lengths back there. Couldn't advance up at all. hmmmm I'm happy with the results. It looked worse than it was coming out of the gate.
Bayren darted to the left violently and possibly caused interference to at least three (3) other horses, but survived an inquire. The stewards of the race meet saw it fit not to disqualify. For me, I personally think likewise. I've seem worst incidence like this and nothing came of it. In the end it was indeed a truly run race, and a dramatic three way finish, this is what thorough bred racing is all about.
i really dont understand this race it was victor esponiza race to loosr perfect postion for crown ...responsed well with the right hand whip then victor switchrd to left no response and back right ...he KICKED!! but to late poor jockey ride
such a poor explication for not disqualifying the winner. In a timed event (like a RACE) you cant tell me that the 1st few seconds are irrelevant. The 1st second is as important as the final second. poor decision and a black eye for racing
They went over and over the race for quite awhile. Where were YOU? And they saw nothing wrong. Garcia moved Bayern over with room to spare. Moreno bumped SB

RedBev59 Ive been in racing for a long time, over twenty years and although the stewards say that they treat every race the same, it's awful hard to take a horse down in a huge race like this, much harder than in a regular race. I think if it had been a claiming race, they would have placed him last.
Bayern's a brilliant specimen but he definitely cheated his way to victory, despite his phenomenal tenacity in front (Obviously, blame the jockey, not the horse).. Shared belief might have smoke everyone - I guess Chrome has no excuses, except he might have needed another run.. Toast Of New York must have shocked everyone, who knew he was that good? It would have been a fairy-tale ending for Spencer, and the ultimate way to arrive on the big-stage for Osbourne.. If Bayern never bullied his way to the front in the manner he did, someone else would have won.. - the stewards are corrupt for not changing the result.. let's be honest, if Chrome finished second, the result would have been amended.. but because it was a Brit who came second.. it's like boxing in Germany, totally corrupt.. the stewards knew it would be best for American Racing to keep the money on home soil.. so sad.. but I think Toast will have his day in the sun come World Cup Night.. 10 mill will be up for grabs..

If you won on Bayern, I'm happy for you, I love people winning.. but the tactics used were very rough and surely there's a line to be drawn.. Baffert already cheated in the Awesome Again with Sky Kingdom.. don't defend him for the sake of it or because of whatever prejudice you have.. Forget thinking this horse was coming down. It's Baffert with all the Santa Anita judges that kiss his rear end. No way in the world this horse was coming down. Best part was the jockey with the company line of basically saying there was nothing wrong.
This was an absolute travesty. If the trainer had been anybody other than Cheatin' Bob Baffert Bayern would have been disqualified. And let's not forget the bumping incident in the 2011 Santa Anita Handicap. Another time the stewards gave him preferential treatment.
We all saw the race. Bayern mauled his way to the rail. And only beats CC ( whose still recovering and ran 15 yards farther) by one head. He s good not great. Sharedbelief did impress me . When a small horse like that takes a beating like that and gets forth thats a good sign.
Gee, I didn't know race horses/jockeys leaving the starting gate could immediately cut to the inside through a space that was already occupied by another horse. Any other type of race and violator(s) would be disqualified or, at least, the race would be restarted for the infraction. I thought allowing this type of tactics was only in the bad old days of horse racing. Watch horse #7 Bayern out of the gate, makes a hard lane change bumping Shared Belief and causing a chain reaction for other horse that get bumped off their pace. Then at about the 10 second mark, #9 doing the same to the #4 horse pushing him into the rear of the of the #7 horse, causing the horse to lose it's concentration on running (you can see the #4 horse trying to look over to see that the hell just ran into him) and causing the #4 horse to slow his pace: Jim Rome's Shared Belief got royally screwed by the fouls of the #7 and #9 horses. California Chrome, drawing a fortunate outside starting position, ran a clean race and he should have been named the winner. It doesn't matter if the infraction was at the beginning of the race or near the end. The stop watch doesn't care when it adds time to a horse running the race. It's quite presumptive to assume that the same infraction that took place early in the race is less of a factor of the outcome of the race than one that occurs later in the race... The stewards failed to perform their job. I suppose suspicion should be raised and we should follow the usual ultimate motivating factor: $$$. Why was the DQ not called out? Who benefited from this this non call? Was this another example of political correctness running amuck? For a sport struggling to keep a fan base, this is a black mark moment for Breeders' Cup... Discounting this marred race, California Chrome should be named the horse of the year by the press. Unfortunately, I don't count on them doing what right either.. And, No, I didn't have any money on the race. Too many good horses to pick out winners...

The jock on Bayern should be cop a supension and a fine, but anyone who thinks that a crush at the start of a race like that should influence the result at the end of the race is just stupid, and bitter at the end result.
why? at the end of the race you could see the top three horses pulling away and the rest were left in the dust. They ALL could have kicked in and moved too and made that top 3 finish a bit more of a race/fight. The horses who placed first, second and third held their positions just about the whole race. Nobody advanced to take over anything. They just didn't have it in them. Face it. there are no excuses. On that last turn......the top three took off and ADVANCED forward......none of the others did. Watch replays OF the Classic race on the Breeders Cup website. Chrome had a completely clean race THIS time and showed what he could do when not boxed in. was good to see that, too, this race.
RedBev59 As I said, it should't influence the result at the end of the race ie. protest dismissed is the right result. However, suspension and fine definitely, otherwise you will have jocks think it's ok to not take control of your horse and let them slam into rivals at the start. But then, you Americans do allow a lot of performance enhancing drugs to be used that other nations horse racings industries don't so maybe that's just how you roll..
Dont be mad Chrome and Shared Belief got out ran. Bayern is a hell of a horse, ran his race just like at Parx last time out. I had a 100 to win on Bayern, so not too shabby! =)

This whole affair just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, particularly because of the poor riding demonstrated in the Awesome Again by (coincidence?) another Baffert horse. Baffert can say he didn't tell his jock to ride like that all he wants and he can whine and complain about how the issue is taking away from the victory till the cows come home--what he's really thinking is he's glad he got away w/ it. Both Bayern and Toast of New York caused SERIOUS problems for several horses, not just Shared Belief. I can't say definitively that they should've been taken down, but those jocks should get days. This isn't a horse race, it's a roller derby, and Bayern is just lucky no one gave him a taste of his own medicine.

From a horseman's standpoint who has see way worse not called what Byren did was a legit move that the jockey did not cause. You can see he pulls other side to not cause the jam. By every ones complaints Toast of New York should have been brought down cause he completely closed off the hole another horse was going to shoot through and that horse had to pull up because of that move. So complaining is useless

I watch this video and I see Shared Belief running fifth in the backstretch, in perfect position to win the race. The start had nothing to do with anything except for those searching for excuses. Shared Belief, Chrome and Toast of NY all had the opportunity to run Bayern down and just couldn't do it. 1:59.88. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I've watched this video at least 10 times and the One flaw in your thinking is if Shared Belief was not impeded (as announcer even said) he would have been up front with Bayern, and Bayern wouldn't have been "walking" on the front end. He was life and death with no challengers. Whether or not anyone else would have won was not the point, there are rules and Bayern clearly should have been taken down. It's Bafferts backyard though and SA didn't want to send him home losing 6 BCC in a row!

They have a mile to get up and most do move up. SB was riding Chromes butt and did not even TRY to catch Chrome. Around the last turn....the front three horses, Bayern, Toast and Chrome, advanced and SB was all alone in the open and had plenty of room to kick into gear. I think he WAS wide open! He didn't try to catch the front three. Watch the video. It had nothing to do with the START of the race.
