An absolutely eminent koncert. From my point of wiev you can not have graduated....you must have been organist for years? And one of the best. Your Bach interpretation is absolutely in top.

Excellent performance. Top notch. I admire your dedication to get your masters at 59. It’d very difficult when we’re older. I am 65 and retired after 40 years of playing. I developed a medical disability at 57 and could no longer play, but I love performances like yours. Bravo 👍

Masterful musicianship is demonstrated here! And (the late) Dirk Andries Flentrop and his team has done a terrific job with making this instrument in 1965!

Toccata in F was amazing! Thank you for sharing this. It was unfortunate the audience applauded after this when it should have been after the Fugue. Kudos to you for maintaining your composure and continuing on.

Because the Toccata is so often as a solo work

Correct about the applause, but the Fugue is hardly ever played.

Many organists are playing Halleluja Gott zu loben. But these composition it's only for exames and concours, like the Variations sur un Noel of Marcell Dupre'.

Wonderful! Well done video also showing the pedals! Interesting making the steady low C pedal louder at 31:30. Dislike that the pedal notes are not connected. Love the pedal mordent (needs to be slightly slower) and pedal trill at 39:09 Dislike that manual notes are not connected. When will this do-not-connect-notes fad cease? Do we also hear Helmut Walcharticulation? Fascinating Rutti piece! Wonderful! Nice acquainting the "Halleluja! Gott zu loben" hymn before the Reger. Wonderful Reger. (51:00 Bogs down due to difficulty?)

Wonderful insights, Robert. Thanks. However, as you may already have recognized by now, in answer to your question, I believe the best reason they seemingly won't release the pedal a little early in order to emphasize the last note of a phrase is because the worst place to listen to an organ is from the bench. Young organists don't quite get it. They... as of 'now' can't really hear the sound out... as it heard out in the room very well. I've played this organ and also sat in the room while it was being played. (Old Seattlite.) The reverb in this room is very unfriendly. Originally an ammunition storage room, big box. But I've often wondered, when they could have had just about anything for le grand organ, why a Flintrop with tracker action? I've never liked this organ or the room with that big iron cross. Creepy. Thank you both for your comments. The pedal note at 31:30 is in fact softer than the preceding section; there I removed the 8' trumpet coupled from the manual. I added the trumpet at the pedal solos for clarity downstairs (I mean, in the sanctuary where the audience is sitting, not in the bass.) For the same reason of clarity, the manual notes are less connected than I would do in a dry room; however, the proximity of the microphones to the balcony and organ case emphasize the disconnect. I did not rely on the sound from the bench, as you suggest; I had been playing with less space (more connection) before the recital, and the feedback I got from teacher and listeners downstairs was that more separation was needed to avoid a muddied sound. So I played for the audience, not for the recording, if that makes sense. And thanks for the compliment (that I'm a young organist) -- even at 59, I feel young!

Notes not connected _sound not connected_ even in very live rooms. I played this from memory. Reger is too difficult to read and perform. This wonderful work is so optimistic and positive-sounding.

I must add my agreement with vindebyvej and others David looks older to be a undergrad, was this his Doctoral performance? Bravo! Bravo! OUTSTANDING. This Organ looks like a TRACKER is it? Curious?
@DaveKriewall
@DaveKriewall 7 лет назад
Yes, a tracker, the Flentrop at St. Mark's Episcopal in Seattle, WA. (And yes, I'm older than most undergrads; I was a professional horn player and took up organ later.)

Most impressive and enjoyable. Do you currently hold down a job as a musician or was this effort all for your own (and our) edification?

Thanks very much. I'm a software engineer now at DocuSign, and that's full time. I used to play horn professionally. Obtaining a masters degree in organ was a personal goal.

Kudos to you for persevering with your organ studies. It was good to see that organ close-up too. I've only heard it the once in person, during the OHS Seattle convention. No doubt you were there too.

I want to learn to play the organ .I know to play the piano but in India there is no proper education in music and no organs here .
@DaveKriewall
@DaveKriewall 5 лет назад
That's a challenge! You eventually would need a pedalboard. There are companies who make practice organs of various types; for example, mine comes from MidiWorks.ca. But to make good progress, you would also need a teacher. I'm sorry for your circumstances. I hope you'll be able to play someday :-)
