Webster defines Lifetime as : the duration of the existence of a living being (such as a person or an animal) or a thing.
Webster defines Forever as: for a limitless time.
The facts are that transmission fluid breaks down and needs to be changed. Most OEM's mark 100,000 miles as "lifetime" or "if the fluid smells burnt."
Well, I went almost 170,000 miles on the Mazda "Lifetime" Unicorn Fluid. It didn't smell burnt, but it did look dark like motor oil. So lets change it go another 170,000 miles on the FW6A-EL.
Tune in.

Great tutorial, thanks a lot. I've always hated that we only mix some good fluid with the old fluid that is still in the transmission and torque converter. I did a full flush on a Ford Territory but it's a lot more complicated. Used the transmission fluid cooler lines to connect a discharge hose. Connected a filler tube to the filler hole and top up. Run the engine and let a fixed volume pump out the discharge hose. Fill with the same amount of good fluid. Repeat until nice bright new fluid is coming out the discharge hose. You now have a completely refilled transmission.

@DariusBuildz 20 дней назад
It would be nice if they had a flush option, but for some reason, Mazda didn’t make that possible with these transmissions. I think they hold about 6qts, so the remaining two sits in the converter unless you do the 3 drain and fills that Mazda recommends to get all the oil trans fluid out.

@@DariusBuildz I'll be making an adapter plate so I can a full flush, pumping new fluid into the cooler return port while the old fluid is being pumped out the cooler supply port into a bucket.

Great tips, especially the one regarding overtightening the gasket. However, I'm unsure if AC Delco ATF is okay for the Skyactiv transmissions. I don't think the specs, ie, viscosity, lines up. I thought Skyactiv transmissions specified FZ type ATF. They added a blue dye to differentiate from the standard pink stuff. I'm sure it'll be fine in the short run, but might cause premature wear in the long run.
@DariusBuildz

The Lube Guard brings it up to spec to the FZ type. I’m going on 30k and it’s doing fine. In 15k more I’ll be doing a drain and fill with more of the same combo.

@@DariusBuildz yeah it was to bad have had worse. I changed filter and fluid for both the engine and transmission. It was dark but not burnt like your car. Ok, so it goes OK and I cleaning up the few tools that I used. And what do I see stuck to a socket. You guessed it. The freaking magnet. It was not a good 😕. Sooo I am going to home depot and get some small super magnets and put them in through the drain hole. I am hoping to be able to push them as far as I can towards where the nipple for the stock magnet maybe able to use an Allen wrench to get inside That's going to have to be good until the next change. Depending on the dealer, they will say never, since Mazda claims "Lifetime" Fluid. Some dealers will say at 60-70k. They do not have the ability to flush the transmission, but their procedure says to basically to a drain and fill 3 times and run the motor for 15 minutes in between each interval to get all the old fluid out. As a general rule, ater 60-70k, no shop will change the trans fluid for liability reasons.

@@DariusBuildz I can't recall ever seeing a magnet in the pan of any automatic transmission. But, I remember seeing metal flakes before in transmissions. @@flylippfantom8425 I've only never seen magnets in aluminum pans. I've always seen magnets in steel pans. and if they didn't have them, I always added them, lol. I think the spec is for 8 qts, so I have roughly 2 qt of old fluid. So in 30k or so, I may do a drain and fill and see how the fluid looks. And you are welcome! Hopefully this video will be of some assistance!

These do have a pan magnet. Drain and fill every 30k. I have a 2017 GT with 32k, did a drain and fill at 30k, send a sample to be analyzed. Came back perfect, and looked to be good for a total of about 60k miles. But since a drain and fill is 3.5 quarts, and there are around 8.2 quarts in the transmission, doing a fluid change at 30k miles would be best. Should also use OEM Mazda FZ fluid.

Good video. Thank you. My only concern is if he initial start until fluid fills the filter? Justlike you run the car after an oil change then re check the fluid. I would have ran the car and engaged the transmission before returning the air box. The inevitable engine lights from the mass air flow can be reset with a Blue Driver OBD reader. Just saying, because I’d want to recheck the fluid level after refilling the air spaces you created by draining.
@DariusBuildz
@DariusBuildz 2 года назад
If I had removed all of the fluid, I would have (That is impossible to do with this transmission since there is no way to flush it, not even Mazda can), but since I added the same amount of fluid that I removed, I was not worried about it.
