The TCM puts out a small reference voltage on the backup light bulb power circuit. When the vehicle is not in reverse, the TCM expects this voltage to be pulled to ground through the closed windings of the bulbs. If the bulbs are blown, the wrong style, or the circuit has a problem, the TCM assumes the vehicle is in reverse.

This video just saved me at least $5,000. Took my Versa to the dealer and they said it needed a full transmission replacement. I watched this video and connected the dots to the after market backup camera I had installed. The knuckleheads who installed the camera did a terrible job and left the wire open to shorting out. A quick repair of their work, and the car is not throwing the error anymore. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this.

Just started the video. Had one of these a couple months ago with the same code. The one I was working on needed the tailights replaced. There is a circut in I think the drivers side tailight that gets corroded in these when the tailights crack and cause transmission range sensor codes. It's weird. That's what the fix was for the one I did though. Also note they don't 100% have to be visibly cracked to have corrosion on that chip. Old bulbs cause it too. Edit* finally got to the point in the video with the bulb. Yes the bulb not making contact will short that circut and trigger that code. You had it right.

I am a Mitsubishi Technician, this is a very common problem with Jatco cvt Jf015. Danner, only replace the bulb's with an original Nissan part number and the cvt will work fine. The Jatco control unit evaluate the amps bulb in all conditions, when the brake is press and depress, when you put reverse, neutral, drive or low, if the amp is not right the control unit set a code and in some cases the cvt set in limp mode. Many technicians from Nissan or Mitsubishi replaced the cvt by warranty claim but in many cases the warranty claim is rejected and the dealer pay for that cvt, regards from Mexico Danner!

If you look at the factory diagram the reverse lights and the input to the TCM are all tied together. All the rear lights share the same grounds left and right side. So it makes sense to me that if you had a ground issue either on the left or the right tail lamp/ stop lamps circuits as well as a short in the rear lighting circuits that would show a system voltage to the tcm.

Bulletin is 100 percent credible. Manufacturers go out of their way to avoid publishing TSBs unless its a legit issue, so when one goes public...you can be damn sure it is legit. Doesn't mean a tsb always relates to the exact situation on the vehicle you're working on..but if it is published as a tsb, it should be step 1 in your diag. And if the diag confirms the tsb but the tsb has you replace a part with same non updated part... then its time for experienced based fix. Don't let the engineers parts cannon shoot you in the ass 😎

Bad ground at the tail lights is the issue. it's simply burned. When You aply brakes or turn signals the voltage goes to the revers light instead of "burned" ground. It's very common for the nissans... Just unplug connectors at the lights and inspect ground terminals/pins.

Back in the 1970's the only CVT around were the DAF transmissions on the small 340 Volvo's from their Dutch factory. These transmission used external rubber drive belts with variable pulleys. The transmiission was mounted in the rear of the car just ahead of the rear axle. The two external belts linked to very large vee pulleys on the left and right drive shafts. I went out to a house call on one with no drive. Put a rope on the car and moved it 10 yards only to have one of the pulleys fall off on to the road. Fix was simple only parts required were a new nut and locking washer.
@Discretesignals
@Discretesignals 3 года назад
The hesitation part is probably the pcm seeing the brake switch on when you're hitting the gas. It thinks it's a runaway and cuts fuel. That's if you had a back feed from the tail lamps to the brake lamp circuit from corrosion or short in the tail lamps board.

In my opinion CVT transmission is similar to a snowmobile Transmission where you have 2 different size pullys when one will squeeze expanding the diameter the 2nd one expands changing the circumference of the pully to smaller and not saying there's a belt inside the transmission But similar
@pilwetty2061

Thanks - I was just going to post the same thing. Only thing I'd add is, it's like a 10-speed bicycle in the way it works, only without set gears to engage. When your pedal sprocket is big and the wheel sprocket is small, you haul ass and pedal slowly, but can't climb hills very well. When the pedal sprocket is small and the wheel sprocket big, you pedal fast and go slow, but are able to climb steep hills with a heavy load with minimal effort. You can think of automotive, snowmobile, and ATV CVTs as infinitely variable 10-speed bicycles with no gears.

My parents 2014 SV sedan set a P0705. The symptom was poor acceleration and engine speed wouldn't rise above 1800 RPM or so. Happened while driving on a sunny day. The P0705 appears to put the car into a limp home mode, where the CVT isn't allowed to change pulley position. When I was plugging in the ODB scanner, the trunk opened. I thought it was just the key in my pocket getting pressed. It happened again today when nobody had either key set. I put the car in reverse (engine not running) and went to close the trunk, noticed the reverse lights weren't on, but they came on when the trunk was closed (I believe the jolt of closing the trunk completed a faulty connection somewhere). I test drove the car a second time after I closed the trunk and pulled the code, the problem was still present, but quickly resolved itself. It hasn't reappeared since. The gear indicator on the dash works fine, the tail lamp assemblies are completely corrosion free. My current theory is that there's a faulty connection between the TRS and tail lamp assembly somewhere in the harness inside the car. Either that or the reverse bulbs or tail lamp grounds are faulty.

LONG SO NO DANGER OF PUNCHING HOLES OR GETTING GREASE ON THE SEAT. WORKED SO WELL, I SPLURGED AND GOT AN 18 INCH ONE TO MAKE A 3 PIECE SET. BEATS HECK OUT OF THE LISLE TOOL AND A LOT LESS MONEY.

One of the proudest moments I’ve had in my 6 years of being a mechanic I am now 21 did it when I was 19 started when I was 15 at a local trans shop.

I had the same problem last week. - Started with the slip indicator turning on. - Diagnostic result was P0705 (1/3) 1. PNP Switch/ Circuit. 2. Shift Position Sensor Circuit. 3. Transmission Range Sensor "A" Circuit. - Then I noticed on the dash Transmission Shift Indicator Position that when I shifted to (D)rive the letters will disappeared, but will appeared only when I went back to (R)everse which sometimes also will dissapeared. - After watching your awesome video, I checked my tail lights. In my case was the right one. When in reverse, was completely off. - After I changed the light bulbs everything is back to normal, except my check engine light is on and gives back the same diagnostic result. How can I reset it, so the check engine light is off? Thanks for the video.

tail lamp assembly water intrusion, first thing I think of? it's corrodes and bridges tail to brake filaments enough to back-feed the brake switch circuit and trigger the codes, possible while coasting a long ways off highway ramp/downhill ** watching further and seeing the corrosion location in photo's, it could be tail/brake back-feeding the reverse or tail/reverse back-feeding the brake circuit or more then one being back-fed via poor ground! (assuming connector is at bottom of those lamp assemblies) which it kind of looked that way by amount of traces.
@throttlebottle5906
@throttlebottle5906 3 года назад
also. poor bulb to housing ground could allow tail to brake circuit back-feeding, assuming the brake switch directly feeds the bulbs and TCM/BCM/ECM. I forget what the diagram claimed or lied about now. multitasking lol and now thinking further, a simple bad filament inside brake/tail bulb could break off the ground side and bridge together, again back-feeding the brake circuit. **also filaments sagged and touching in a shared tail/brake bulb. really a big can of worms there, but that's the stupid things which my mind figures out pretty fast when I focus on it, but you cannot win them all in a hurry!

Continuously variable transmission. Basically a pair of inward facing cones for input and another for output and a high strength belt connecting them. the input cones move apart and the output cones move together so that the belt is on a smaller part of the input side cones and bigger part of output side cones to increase gear ratio. Since it can be at any points on the cones, it doesnt have set ratios, itll just slide continuously, slightly increasing the ratio the whole time.

Yesterday I noticed when shifting no indication on dash of gear I was in and today the check engine light back on. Went to tell mechanic as I just got car back yesterday and he scanned again said it’s a transmission sensor code he said would need further diagnostic. Car runs fine so fingers crossed 🤞🙏💫it’s something easy like this . Thanks for sharing ❤

PROBLEM FIXED: I own a 2015 Nissan Versa sedan and had the exact same symptoms including the gear position next to the odometer disappearing. At 27K and 40K, the CVT transmission was replaced under warranty. The P0705 issue started at 85K miles and I didn't fully diagnose the correct fix until 105K miles. I tried swapping the tail light circuit boards from another Versa, pushing wires (feeding into) the connectors, taking out and turning the connected tail light assemblies to twist the wiring to make better contact, changing the transmission sensor (twice, maybe 3 times), resetting the engine light each time. The code would go away and then always come back. Then, I identified the real issue was the loose female metal "pin grabbers" inside the female tail light connectors. The pins on the harness do not grab the pins on the tail light assembly tightly enough, throwing the code. It has nothing to do with your transmission. Rather the cost saving effort in perhaps a common ground or other wire between the transmission sensor and tail light wiring. Hence, you have signal loss, triggering the check engine code. I took a pointy tool (like a screw driver except ending in the point). You have to use a tool with a strong pointed end. And placed it into the female connector, pushing each of the "grabbing" connectors (top and bottom metal) closer so they'd grab the male connectors better. Now at 110K miles, no check engine light and I don't expect it to return. I didn't bother resetting the code this time and the check engine light went away on its own a couple thousand miles ago.

All the time I was shouting at the TV for you to check the connector on the back of each lamp cluster. No matter what brand, they're notorious for burning up the ground connection as the stamped part of the cluster is galvanised steel whereas the harness connector is brass or similar. Direction of current flow, sum of current from all lamps, a little moisture and you get accelerated corrosion then they melt due to high current through a high resistance. My guess is fault sets when direction indicators and brake lights are on at the same time. What does it need to see a high? Maybe only 5 Volts on a 12V circuit?

I have a couple nuggets to share with the classroom. I noticed that you pulled codes and then you complained that you didn't have freeze frame data later. You should be able to save the freeze frame data onto your Snap On scan tool. Then you can erase your codes and still have something to fall back on. It's a bit of a pain in that they're not user friendly in writing file names. Finding them has been kinda rough and then understanding what you're looking at can be confusing because they'll show the freeze frame data like it's just live data PID's. They do transfer easy to a PC for easier reading on Shop Stream Connect, though. I also did some snooping for OE wiring diagrams. It turns out that Mitchell did the best they could with what Nissan gave them. Nissan never added any splices to their diagram for the CVT controls to the reverse lights. It would seem they ONLY added relevant splices for CVT control circuits. The reverse light diagram did include the splice and they drew it like a CVT and a traditional automatic range sensor were both installed. If you ever want to see it for yourself, page TM313 in the transmission section and page EXL68 in exterior lighting sections are where I found them. I'm glad you posted this video for us. I've always struggled with Nissan's service info and wiring diagrams. This got me spending some time to get a little more acclimated with it. Nissan's service info is still as dissapointing as a system call, but I can find my way through the service info a little better. Thanks, as always, and keep up the good work.

"They're not telling me why".... Yup, that's exactly the way successful technicians think. Good reasoning, backfeeding voltage from a shared ground could trick the computer into sending another misleading code. Unfortunately those who write these communications are more specialized in language translation than they are in auto repair.
@shauno3697
@shauno3697 3 года назад
In my experience, many service manuals prove they aren't any better at language translation either. It seems to me, they're much more concerned with safety and liability disclaimers. They could care less about how much you need an English to English translation after that. Read a Mitsubishi service manual for the full shock value. I expect to see something like this on a good day: "Warning: Do not attempt to eat, or otherwise attempt to chew on the business end of your chainsaw for any reason. This is especially relevent when the chain brake is released and the chainsaw is at full throttle. Any attempts to put your lips and/or mouth on the chain at any time may result in personal injury" "Warning: Do not attempt to put any amount of the rest of your face near or on the chain under the aforementioned conditions. saying this before completing the video: given he bulletin and lack of correct wiring diagrams in the moment, you should have tried a proof of concept, shorting out/partially shorting out and forcing a backfeed to see if the DTC came back, using a urrent limited circuit to prevent damage.. if you couldn't generate DTC from back feeding then ignore the bulletin and its wiring diagram.

I think it was maybe Eric O. at South Main Auto who also says he dislikes working on Nissans with electrical issues because their wiring diagrams are horrid. 38:50, the pry bar as the brake pedal assistant, do you know how many times I have done that? Great minds think alike😁. I don't know why manufacturers use those printed circuit boards on tail lamps or anywhere else on a car. GM used those on their pickups for years and had problems with them. I remember an instructor saying to me one time that for those to be effective the margin of error in manufacturing them has to be zero, in other words, probably won't happen. I like how that chart at 12:27 says two or more signals simultaneously stay on continuously. I'm surprised they didn't also say at the same time, 🤣.
