( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Toyota Corolla is all new...OK that's not completely true. The engine is a carry-over power-plant from last year, but otherwise the 2014 Toyota Corolla is all new. The new Corolla features a a much improved and enhanced interior with richer materials, better seats, and even an upgraded sound system. From the outside it looks like a baby Avalon. But do all of these significant changes make it any faster. In another accurate fun and informative TFLcar 0-60 MPH review Nathan finds out is the new 2014 Toyota Corolla is fast at a mile above sea level in Eco mode and in Sport mode.

I got the '15 S and it's laughably slow at the stop lights. It is, however, fun to drive on back roads and I like how it looks.

I drive a Corolla for economical and reliable transportation and NOT for speed. It is not designed for speed.

I just want to say that I have the 2014 Toyota Corolla S down here in Florida and my best 0-60 is 7 seconds flat, with the CVT engine. How you might ask? I'll give you the steps. 1. Hold down the traction control button for five seconds to turn off traction control and stability control. 2. Put it in sport mode so it reacts to your gas pedal faster. 3. Put the car in manual mode 4. Floor it and while in first gear wait for the RPMs to hit 5,750 (right before 6,000rpm) and switch it into automatic mode *This causes the car to stay in first gear longer bouncing on redline before shifting 2nd gear. If you're elevation is much higher than sea level like in this video you should be getting 9 sec 0-60 times with this method. [PLEASE REMEMBER THAT WITH CVT THERE ARE NO GEARS BUT JUST "SIMULATED SHIFT POINTS" SO TOYOTA MADE THIS CVT PERFORM LESS FOR THE SAKE OF MAKING FEEL LIKE A REGULAR 6 SPEED AUTOMATIC" You are welcome Toyota Fam =)

A car should be judged by what it was designed to be rather than what you think it should have been. The Corolla fulfills its mission well and given its sales volume a whole lot of people must think so too.

People, Sport mode doesn't give you extra power... it sharpens up throttle response. For 0-60 where ur mashing the pedal it makes no difference, but you do feel it when driving around town in slow and go traffic. It's the same on almost every car, including the new NIssan Sentra.

Dan Troop: I think you're missing a point here. Roman or Nathan are test driving the cars or suvs based on their specs given and comparing to their competitors in the same segment. And I believe that they have the right to form their opinion and judge the specs of the cars freely. I do love toyota cars and used to own a few different model of them, but as for this model tested in this video, could have been little more powerful to attract more young customers since they've done a nice face lift.

OK, so I realize this isn't a Fast Lane Car fave ride, but it would be nice to get more info about the Corolla's ride/interior comfort/handling/steering, etc., for folks in the market for an economy car. And, how the Corolla compares in ride/handling/interior/steering with others in the same class, if you've driven them. Just a friendly suggestion, because I enjoy TFL's videos.

I'd like to see a comparison between the CVT and the 6M as I've got a two generation old Rolla with a 5M that consistently turns 7.8 to 60 with sticky rubber. It was my university transport which got autoXed quite a bit and lately it has been my courier vehicle. The only things I changed were to pull about 150lbs out of it between the spare, toolkit and jack while adding some lightweight Konig alloys and a lithium ion battery. I figured the 400ish lbs added to the new Rolla would slow it down a bit but not quite so drastically, also I'm at sea level here in Newfoundland Canada.

I watch all the videos you Guys post, and I noticed something. If you could give me a reply on what you think or anyone who reads this comment could help me. But why is it that car manufacturer's are putting "sport mode" in there vehicles and from your 0-60 test, the sport mode doesn't help at all! I have a Lexus GS and I notice that the sport mode just shifts different. Doesn't give more HP, just makes my car shift at higher RPM. Not sure what the point is if it doesn't make the car's faster. Just curious if anyone knows?

Interesting simulated shifts out of the CVT. Does make it sound better (the best a puny 1.8 can sound) than it droning at a fixed RPM which is what most CVTs do, but maybe not the fasted way to 60.

I have a ‘15 and there’s a secret to making it faster. No joke mimicking a gear change by slightly lifting off and then going back on accelerates the car. You know. I’ve never actually tested it how fast it actually is. Guess I’ll have to time myself. But all u with the same car try it. I might be terribly wrong or correct idk idc I love my Corolla

@TimJoseph08031990 10 лет назад
Toyota's CVT might defeat the purpose of what the CVT was meant to do, keeping the engine speed steady with better efficiency. But at least simulating automatic transmission shifts with the CVT is something different that not all automakers offer.

I just recently went car shopping and test drove a '14 Corolla S because I liked the new look, but the car sucked when I drove it. Toyota really needs to change the engine in this car, it's much too dated. The dealer tried showing off the paddle shifters (a gimmick on a Corolla with a CVT anyway) and floored it and the car went nowhere. I got a '14 Jetta SE instead with the new 1.8T engine and couldn't be happier, 2014 Mazda 3 is nice too.

Its not got that much acceleration but i have raced in it. Not smart but i have the 2016 Corolla S Plus XSP with the blacked out logos that came factory. If you know how to use the shifter mode it can help with acceleration. I don’t recommend this but if you decide to stop light race someone the way to beat them in a normal sedan is to just go faster than they are willing to go.

Without a significant re-imagining of its very nature, I doubt you will ever see me driving a Corolla. That being said, I acknowledge that it is not a car made for me. It is made to be cheap and reliable form of transportation, first and foremost, and in that regard it really is an amazing success. At least they have finally put some effort into its design so it is no longer a hideous, visual blight on the world.

Many of us are not excited by the Corolla, but it does what it is supposed to do and it wins the most important vote of all - the one on the bottom of the sales contracts. In fact it got the vote for "car to spend my money on" over 302,000 times in the US alone last year. Obviously there is something to be said about having a well screwed together car that just never seems to break. Its not my cup of tea, but I can fully understand why people buy it.

im1greatman Had the same issue with a rental Cruz with the 1.5L turbo. Merged onto the highway as a watched a distant semi truck gain on me at an alarming rate....the engine tried its best but I was use to a 2.2L cobalt which at least has some pick up....and the cobalt isn't fast....but would have had no issue merging on with a distant semi.I feel that I need roughly 150-160 HP and similar torque in a car as a requirement. These econo engines are such slugs...and they work so damn hard during casual driving....I don't need to be testing redline during drives where I just need to accelerate to 35-45mph in a reasonable time...

It definitely is a bit nerve-wracking but my main rule of thumb to keep in mind is that even though it seems like people aren’t going to let you in because you’re not going at the same speed they are, you have to also remember that if they don’t slow down once you merge in the lane, that they’re going to rear-end you, so they have to slow down regardless. If I’m merging and I’m starting to reach speeds of up to 55mph then people on the merging lane should be attentive for oncoming merging traffic so they should let you in (according to the right-of-way rules) once the lane starts to split and you’re technically ahead of them by at least 500 feet

It isn't safe Nathan. It's basically an over decade old chassis that has been updated skin-deep. It does pretty poorly in a crash test. And the reason people say "Why live with a car like this" is because there are *far* better options out there. That provide some excitement/technology/fun.

Why it shows RPM drops during acceleration? Is CVT suppose to work this way (as regular automatic transmission)? I thought "continuously" means that this transmissions has no gears and not shifts, huh?
@HKN_RealReviews
@HKN_RealReviews 10 лет назад
I'm going to assume that the car was in some kind of different mode so that it didn't have that rubber banding effect like most CVT's. The Audi A6 has a CVT as well and in sport mode it had 6 simulated gear ratios where basically a computer plays with the RPM's at redline and makes it seem as though it is a conventional 6-speed automatic. Some people would much rather leave a CVT in sport/manual mode just so that it feels faster and more normal. But in reality it's still a CVT acting like a regular automatic. Hope that helps.

My honest opinion is that this 2014 model is by far superior to the old one (which i do own) because it not only looks better on the outside and inside it seems to drive alot better than it used to. The greatest improvement they have made to this car is removing that useless 4 speed automatic and replacing it with something from this century.

@trumpet12345
@trumpet12345 10 лет назад
vader11111 The 4 speed is pretty much just for rental fodder. I for one, could appreciate keeping a good design for a long time. If one knows a car inside out, under and above-I'd rather get the same thing if I can. Is is the fun thing, or the car guy thing? No, its the knowledge that even on the way to work, or on the way to the hospital-you know what you cannot fix on the fly or what can wait 5 miles before the car is done for good (if a life is on the line). If you know how to change a tire, and you are stuck on the "wrong" side of town, you're either going to ride that rim out or turn into a one man nascar pit crew real quick. That and does anyone value the rush of fixing their own car, let alone a friend's to save 100's in cash and can do it on your time? Imagine its Christmas day and the shitty plastic radiator in your good ol car finally gave way and is puking coolant. Luckily you realized its cheap insurance to have a spare since radiator caps are so crappy they need replaced every 5 or so years as also-good insurance- and in my case the local place had caps for 8 bucks, whole radiators for 80 (came with a cap). Not knowing if the radiator would bite the dust, figured it couldn't hurt. I can swap that thing out if need be if someone brings that radiator, some coolant, and a few tools even if I have to do it roadside in the dark. Everything needed can be done by feel for that task on that Geo Prizm (corolla). It has a *gasp* 3 speed automatic. At least its just mechanical though, and a solely swap out, drill a hole for the shifter change can make it a 5 speed manual if the 3 speed fails. That dinky car handles snow better than sports cars, and certainly better than ego driven trucks. The narrow ass tires are what you need, like those tiny US mail trucks. I've seen a chain of mail trucks, priuses, and other oddball cars conquer snow that cripples those hardass vehicles with brush covers who need a mud tire is the key to snow success. They don't do the job of a truck and they don't pretend to be anything they are not. It may not be some big truck with the latest engine tech and power to move the world - but it does the job of A to B. Don't ask me to go to point C with a Geo Prizm for "fun" though or I'll torch it and walk [lol]. Its strictly a tool for me. Call it an appliance, but that old Maytag doesn't skip a beat either and that old washer that someone sold for pennies on the dollar for a broken 5 dollar rubber belt is a time when you could buy something you could trust to last. A 3000 dollar washing machine can perform more actions than I have clothes to do it to, and will likely fail due to a computer failure. Hell I had an oven that had a "computer" failure, but the oven would have worked if that could be bypassed. When it came time to buy a washer, I hedged my bets. I bought the cheapest offbrand that I could trace back to the original maker, downloaded as much repair manual/service manual/plumber reviews/etc and weighed what might fail, how likely, the cost + the hassle of me fixing it, and found a set that had the highest chance to not F me. It something failed, I would have worked it to figure out if the source of the defect and resolve it for the least amount of time/hassle and money. I don't play hardball over 20 bucks and wait to deal with labor costs that easily rack up to the cost of the entire product when I can fix it in an hour on my terms. I've bought some of the cheapest "junk" composed of god knows what parts only to take it apart later to find much higher quality parts from all sorts of different suppliers mashed together. The sooner people realize economics, especially economics of scale, contracts, common suppliers, legal issues and such-the faster one can make logical purchases. Whether it be a car or a spoon, the name brand pop tart or the "Store Brand" -toaster pop up pastry or whatever they call them-understand the purchase and what lead you to purchase it objectively. Is one literally just a colorful box, and its a guilty pleasure buy anyway and worthwhile to spend more for it for the perception? Buy whatever the hell you want, but don't rationalize being played by marketing thinktanks and CEO's that literally make designs literally deciding marketshare, jobs, and a future of a company based on the color of sprinkles. The easiest way for a person to exploit their fellow man in this world is in business. When you read people who either refuse to read themselves or just can't-you own them, one purchase at a time. That's business, its a spreadsheet not morals, unless those morals boost the spreadsheet of course. Boost sales by giving a nickel to charity right at the point you drop your new mark up plan? That's an acceptable month of slight lose, but they will just see a wrapper changing from color to color and not the price hike slowly trickle up cent by cent. Its the kind of -get in your head- backed by stats that every psychiatrist would drool for to analyze objectively a patient. Except, its being used to make you purchase their product. So hopefully the think tank hired by the treadmill company is a little craftier than the cookie one for the sake of our waistlines. Further, and back to cars: I as a consumer that can't pour unlimited time in my car or money-would prefer a bullet proof design that can handle abuse and is proven in the proving grounds of real life. Only people who are not engineers can prove just how much abuse a car can take. Seriously, if it was me? I would love to see how a design would change if they beta tested with a rental fleet or gave a fleet to consumers to beta test telling them they wouldn't be responsible for damage for "accidents" the same neglect and "accidents" that they lie about when it comes time for warranty work or screaming their anecdote on the web about a car. Think people don't lie about anything? I've seen people lie blatantly thinking people were not watching over far beyond trivia things, and when called out by the person they thought they could dupe, they just get mad. You know how mad they also get when they cause a large enough annoyance that I go over and calmly give them the entire reason they were lying, right down to their tells as they were pitching the story? Its that honest they know the gig is up that causes them to pause, fret, and all out rage and storm off. At least I own up when I bluff and clearly and logically am analyzed by someone objectively, not that I really do it for money-just witty sports and pranks on people.

I'm having a very hard time believing it's that slow. With that said, some of you are doing a poor job defending Toyota. The Camry V6 has the best 0-60 times in its class achieving 5.5 seconds in 0-60. Camry, like Toyota says, so darned fast.

Jesus Christ, you've just changed my entire mind about getting a WRX. The newer Camry TRD's look spectacular, and would be much more familiar to me, since I already drive a 2014 Corolla. I could push the power even farther up if I can figure out a turbo or super for it, too! >:D

Let's face it, this car is targeted for families with low-income wages or recent college graduates that are looking for an economy car. Toyota just decided to rebrand the corolla to seem more appealing when really not many changes have been made.

I think the car would accelerate a lot faster and get better fuel economy if the RPMs stayed constant. I think it's stupid how they try to simulate gear shifts in a vehicle with no gears.

Does the cvt slow it down because I have a 2012 Kia Forte 2.0 liter and also live in the mile high and am able to get a zero to sixty of about 8.5 or 9 seconds most of the time. And again keep in mind I do live in the mile high.
@bobloblaw7613

***** CVT has potential for better speed, since you don't lose power on the shift, considering many cars with lower power will take three gears to hit 60.Problem with cvt is I would be afraid to juice it before take off, since its a belt on wheels and wear causes the cvt to slip, plenty of videos of CVT slip on youtube.also the CVT needs to be programmed to go for a speed configuration, otherwise it will want expand too fast, basically it wants to widen its ratio quickly for economy.

I get 8.5 - 9.5 seconds in my 2014 S in Sport mode and traction control off, but in manual I get 7.5 - 8.5 so not too shabby.
@fadeking2018

+The Rusty Scooter I just want to say that I have the 2014 Toyota Corolla S down here in Florida and my best 0-60 is 7 seconds flat, with the CVT engine.
@fadeking2018
@fadeking2018 8 лет назад
you see the reason its possible is because by switching from manual to automatic it allows you to stay in 1st gear longer while at 6,000rpm where its hitting peak horse power. ill try to make a video on it so you can see for yourself. =)

Oh no. That fake stitching on the dash is horrendous. It's a piece of plastic with stitching. Logic. The rest of the interior is properly bad too. Major disapointment. Cheap glossy plastic. The same clock as my old 90's Camry, a Nav screen from 2005. What a mess.

All that S means is plastic body cladding and a spoiler. You still pay extra for Alloys. Other than that, there is nothing sporty about. It's like putting an S on to a Microwave. It makes no difference.

Well it's not that easy, the normal MSRP was stated at $23,500, but I knew it would start at $18,000-$20,000 for the regular models... I guess I was wrong! :(
