2014 Toyota Corolla takes on the Ike Gauntlet Review

( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Toyota Corolla is almost all with a more sporty and fun design. We used the word almost because the engine choices remain the same but that doesn't mean that the 2014 Toyota Corolla is not a new car. Instead with a CVT transmission and sporty design and tuning this new Corolla has also been revised with fuel economy in mind.
In another accurate fun and informative TFLcar review Nathan and Roman take the newest Corolla up the Ike Gauntlet to see how the new CVTd transmission handles the steep grade.
From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the 8-speed transmission of the 2014 Toyota Corolla.

There's so much hate for the Corolla here. Reading these comments is like watching 10-year olds fight about what super hero is best. The new Corolla is a good car, and it feels like people are just throwing around exaggerated statements. Sorry guys, not everything can be a +200 hp sports car.

Rated 39mpg. Most people who opt to buy manual DONT use it in the most efficient manner, nor if they want to drive it efficiently do they do it as consistantly as an automatic. In my opinion, for the average person a CVT will be about 5 mpg higher on a daily basis than a manual if all things are equal.

The CVT to most car guys, like the audience for this show and others like it (myself included), is a joke. But the CVT for people living in the real world, like my wife, is enormously fantastic. You can't argue with 45mpg and roominess for days in her new sentra.

Kevin Vines 45mpg that means your wife is paying a lot more then the Corolla which only gets 41 or so on high way and 33 on the roads. But both seem like great cars. I have the 2015 corolla le. I love this car.

I am 44 years old. I went to a dealership yesterday to upgrade from my '07 Sentra to a car that is more suitable for my age- the Camry. I was very disappointed with the Camry. But, then I drove the Corolla. It put a smile on my face. It was everything a Corolla should be and more. It makes you think it is worth every penny. The Camry didn't do what a mid-sized sedan should do. It was a pain in the rear to drive. Why would I spend more money on a car that is disappointing?

I like the Civic a lot better. I can't understand why people are bashing the CVT though. If you want sporty and a faster 0-60 get a Corvette or Mustang. If I'm buying a car this small I want the best fuel economy possible. Its never going to run with a sports car so why even bother.

Very good point. They are not sport cars. They are made for fuel economy. And besides... How many times do we floor it to accelerate from 0 to 60, anyways? Just saying, after over a year with a CVT, I don't want to have anything else now. It will be a requirement on all my future cars. ok it is a little odd on take offs if you need to get over 80. But once on the road it has a level of comfort that can't be compared. NO shifting feel. Not that I never liked to drive fast. I once (a very long time ago. lol) managed to lose my driving licence for speeding with a FIREFLY. A freaking 3 cylinder, 1 litter engine, 55 hp, car. But these days, with gas prices... Well, you know. (just my opinion)

Very true. The CVT's are less costly for them to put in which is important in the cheap car segment where literally every dollar counts as it's easy to take some huge losses selling these kind of cars.

Zack Zander Yeah I don't get why people are bashing how slow the car is. its not made to be quick. If they want a fast car then they should get one and stop commenting on these videos about how slow the car is. I love my 2015 Corolla Le. its smooth and it saves on gas. Can't beat the 40 or 41 miles per gallon on the high way and around 33 or so on the roads.

I think cars are only as boring as the person driving it. If there was no speed limit then ya sure this car might seem boring compared to other cars. Doesn't matter what car I'm driving, I always have a good time. This car is small, nimble, and quick. I'm always weaving in and out of traffic, same as I would in a Ferrari or on a scooter.

J. Garcia hi, I don't know about other countries. But in Canada, according to nissan.ca and toyota.ca. The versa range from $ 11,898 to $ 16,998 The Corolla range from $ 15,995 to $ 20,250 The Sentra range from $ 15,098 to $ 21,098. So the Corolla would be in the price range of the Sentra, not the Versa. Please don't take my word for it. You can go verify on their web site.

If it was 2013, I would get Sentra but even 1 year later, Corolla became so much better and pretty much all the compact car lineup surpassed the sentra to where it became irrelevant.

icantw8 Agree. 2013 Sentra>2013 Corolla, but 2014 Corolla>2014 Sentra. The current Sentra is one of the worse in its class.

Unlike Romam, I would choose choose the corolla as a buy over the mazda 3. You just cant beat toyota reliability. The corolla is better than the mazda in almost every category except for handling dynamics. However if you are buying a car in this category you want the most sensible one.

This is a good car for us broke ass American factory workers with 5 years of stagnant wages. Boring but the ECO LE goes for less than 20 grand. 42MPG-hwy, affordable, comfortable.

Or for people that just don't feel like paying a $1000+/month car payment. My husband is an anesthesiologist, and I'm a cardiopulmonary physical therapist. I proudly drive my Corolla to work every day. However, my husband drives a 2013 Porsche Cayenne. He doesn't share my interest in trying to save money, So, just because you make good money, it doesn't mean you have to drive $60,000+ cars.

Marty McFly We have a nice car as well. I work 45 miles from home and I don't want to put a ton of miles on a nice car, and there is no point in wasting gas driving our suv. I get almost 40 mpg in my 2014 Corolla. It's better for the environment too.

The new Corolla does look great, but competition has more than caught up. The same goes for the newly introduced 2014 Honda Civic coupe. That statement is hard to say because the Civic and Corolla used to be the top sellers in the segment. Excellent review guys!

I use to own an 07 Corolla S and I really enjoyed it to a certain point, and then I switched to an 08 Audi A4. Love the car to death, but I really like what Toyota is doing with the new Corolla.

Is this a good car for a recent college graduate who doesn't have a lot of money to spend and doesn't care if it is "sporty" or "youthful"? I just want a good reliable car that will get me from point A to point B comfortably without me having to worry about things falling apart. I'm currently looking at getting the Toyota Corolla LE Eco. Either this or the MAZDA3 i SV 4-Door. Which would you recommend?

***** I ended up buying the MAZDA 3 I SPORT 4-Door Sedan Automatic. It is a very nice car. I didn't like the way the Toyota Corolla drove. Plus, I got a deal on the MAZDA3 with all the features I wanted that was still cheaper than the lowest tier Toyota Corolla because they wanted to sell it before the new year. Toyota wouldn't do the same (I did try).

Thanks for showing more interior angles during the drive. You usually have the dash cam facing Roman & Nathan's faces. You guys are handsome but I'd rather see shots of the dash and instrument cluster. Please keep this up for future videos.

My advice if you do get the corolla, skip the driver convenience package (which is basically just keyless entry and push button start) and save a bit over $1000. Also skip the $800 moonroof. You can get a Corolla S with navigation and heated leather seats for $21,500 delivered.

I wish people would stop complaining.... The Corolla is not meant for people to blow down the highway!!! Its meant to last you FOREVER and in doing that it'll take you not from point A-B but from A TO Z unlike those other cars you people have mentioned in the comments. I could take a 95' Corolla in good condition all the way across the UNITED STATES and Back with no problem... Can some of you say that for the heap of junk you drive... I know for a fact that no chevy could do it, I would never trust a ford to do it... I floor my Corolla 120 there and 120 back... I forgot how long it took but Florida to New York floored at 120... Not ONE PROBLEM!!! Could I trust a Mazda 3 to do the same...?? NO!?!? I'd rather trust my car than trust that my car will be faster than everybody else for the first 200 miles before I start having trouble...

Hey Guys--just a comment/observation. I notice you that don't bring up safety that much in your reviews. You mention, for example, that the Corolla/Camry are good values for families, etc, but it's well known that both of the vehicles failed the small overlap test from the IIHS. Now even Consumer Reports doesn't recommend them. I realize that you guys focus on comfort/performance first and foremost, but given the target market of this vehicle it would seem appropriate to bring it up sometimes.

Why did you not show the acceleration with sport mode on? It simulates the gears and you forget that your driving a cvt. Give it a try, you might be surprised.

Good car but if you're not in the immediate need of one, wait until these hit the Toyota certified used lots in about 2 years. Should be able to score one for a few thousand less due to depreciation. From there, the Corolla will hold its value very well over time, be reliable, fuel efficient, and provide a great ride.

Nissan Versa is a economy car, the Corolla is in the compact class. So yea you should expect the Corolla to out do the Versa. Sentra is the Corollas direct competitor along with the Elantra, Forte, Civic, Cruze, and the Focus.

That was a high revving CVT. (I know Subaru & Nissan CVTs due rev at a high level). Hey, Roman & Nathan -- for max fuel efficiency, Toyota should have given you the LE Eco version of the Corolla.

Ehh this is why you have to take reviews with a grain of salt, I have owned two of these are I think they have adequate power, I have not felt like I was in a situation where the car felt too slow to get out of its own way. Now may I mind you I’m a much much smaller of person so I know that helps. Now I wanted to point something out also, the back seat of the Corolla is hugh, like Camry level of space. You CAN have kids with a Corolla….. now no you can’t have 3 kids and fit all their stuff but two children will be perfectly fine! Keep your trunk clean and you can carry a full size stroller and diaper bad no issue (I know because I’ve done it) Drive it yourself! You might be suprised!

Nice looking car but it's had the same powertrain since the 2009 model, and it's not even direct injected. Theey could have at least gave it a bit more hp and torque. It also sucks that they discontinued the Matrix which had much more space than this one. I hope they will make something similar to that, and no the Prius V does not count.

I just wonder... How good where the first automatic transmissions. What was the buyers reactions to them. Maybe if we give a chance to CVTs, they can get better, and maybe be the future in automatic transmission. 4, 5, 8, 12... gears... Or an unlimited number of them. More than a 100 might be what a CVT is like. I don't know, but sure sounds like it. Doesn't it sound good and efficient like nothing else? (just my opinion)

Moi MacArt When the first automatic transmission came out, it was definitely functional. I don't know how well it worked but seeing as lots of cars have them, it definitely made a breakthrough in the industry. CVT's are still 'young' and lots of consumers are just not used to how it feels, that's why it's frowned upon by real enthusiasts. CVT's also have an infinite amount of gears but an automatic will never have that much because it requires physical gears. CVT: Fuel efficient, cheap to make, cheap to maintain. Auto: Traditional feeling, good for cars with power, also fuel economical, good in traffic, powerful and accurate.

i understand the corolla isn't a chevy camaro or a srt viper but it has some power, comparing to the competitors like the nissan sentra, and honda civic. my opinion is that the corolla isn't the fastest but the interior and exterior is much better (again my opinion). especially at $16,00 the corolla is (well should) be accepted as a small camry. (which isn't a bad thing.) I just hope toyota puts in a 5 speed automatic like in the toyota (corolla) matrix.

Much better than the old Corolla. It does have some stiff competition though.

Mac Macky I have to agree with you on that even though I have never owned a camry. I do have a 2015 Corolla Le and my friend had a camry it was a 99 I think.

I would never want to have to rely on a Mazda for a daily commute. So for fun the Mazda perhaps but Toyota takes a giant shit on Mazda in reliability.
