Have watched LOTS of your FJR videos and really appreciate the time, effort and quality. I have put down a deposit on a 14 plate bike and hope to collect it next Saturday. A battery tender and sat nav power lead are musts for me so this one should help be straight away Top job fella

Just installed a pig tail for my Battery Tender on my 2016 FJR today, and your video was super helpful. Without having seen your instructions, I'm sure that cover would have given me a hell of a time. And, by the way, the two screws on my bike are allen head bolts (not that it really matters that much).

Thanks Brian, I installed my pigtail last night. One piece of advice, even if you have to use chewing gum, block off the slot that exposes the nut under the terminals. Mine fell out and despite the fact that I spread a bath towel under my MC I was unable to find it. Had to take a nut and grind it down to get it fit through the slot.

Thanks for the walkthrough on how to do this! I have the exact same model bike as you. Love it. I was reading up on how to do this on a 2013 model (thought it would be similar) and it scared me. This looks easy in comparison. I have heated gloves and I'm taking a 3000 mile trip this next week and I needed to figure out how to plug the gloves into my battery. Thanks again!! Also, if I may add, I tried the Yamaha Touring windshield, too. As you said, even in the lowest position, you don't get that chest air flow. I recommend the Laminar Lip for the best of both worlds. Pretty good air deflection when in the high position, and good air flow when in the low. I'm 6'2" for reference. :)

As usual, well explained. I need to fit my Optimate lead and Sat-Nav harness to the bike and your video together with the much easier 2016 model, makes this possible for the complete novice to carry out.

ADDED: Lighting!! Without addition lighting, it's hard to see what's going on. Shift from camera angle to angle, cross fade, please. BTW some videos, shot during the day, almost everything in the shot is bleached out. Please re-think the shot to avoid the open door. I get it that Tampa and a closed garage can be a Bad Idea, but maybe sometimes it's all you can do. HTH

On my 2005 I put a pigtail on and was able to run it down to the right side gill vent and just tuck it in around the opening when not in use. Just reach in and pull it out through the gill opening when needed. About 5 or 6 inches comes out. Can plug in my tender or hook up my small air compressor in case of a flat (which has the same type connector). I also have a longer piece of cable (3 or 4 feet) with male/female connectors on both ends so I can jump another bike with a pig tail too.

Another option to hold the end of the wire in place when not using is one of those adhesive wire management clips you use on a desk. It usually clamps on the skinny part of the wire but the SAE end is too large to slip through so sort of just hangs there.

Terrific information in this video. I was able to complete the task in less than ten minutes. Side note. On my bike, I had allen head screws instead of phillips head. I was able to use the allen wrench from the bikes tool kit.

Great video on access and installing pigtail, thank you! However, do you have one on removing the OEM battery... on my 2015 the battery makes interference with the front pannel when raising it up, and I fear to force things too much. Any recommendations? By the way best to you and yours in 2020.

I see your pooch walk up at 13:28 to inspect your workplace and make sure it’s up to OSHA standards. LOL! My battery access panel is similiar on my recently acquired 06. I noticed the previous owner either left off or lost the clips that snap into the lower portion of the black cover panel. I don’t notice any adverse rattling or shaking at all and it still seems pretty snug. Maybe he did it for easy roadside battery access as it makes it a simple two 4mm Allen screw affair? I normally rode all year round with the exception of snow. But now that I’m a multi bike owner I’ll be investing into a couple of battery tenders. Once again...good video.

I wish I'd seen this prior to September. While running as pack mule for the Reliability Rally, I got a puncture. Took us about 40 minutes to figure out how to get that damned panel off (didn't realize about the tab further back) after my inflator blew the accessory plug's fuse. No problems getting it out yesterday to finally install a pigtail for it. But those terminal nuts drive me, well, nuts. I actually created a tool out of a paper clip to hold them in place while I reattach the bolts. Oh, and the 2015 are allen-head, as well.

My FJR came with a pig tail; guess the dealer I purchased it from did it for me. This video was helpful on getting to the battery. I am going to come up with something to make it faster and easier to access.
@TwoWheelObsession

Atomic Shooter Yes, some dealers install them before the sale especially in markets where riding seasons are short and they are practically a necessity. Down here - nope, unless you want to pay for it :)

A tip when fitting a battery is to put a piece of small rubber hose under the square nuts on the battery making it easy to do jobs like this

So I have the pig tail installed and the same battery tender. My battery is real dead. How long should it take to charge enough to start. Original battery on 2013

I sure wish you would post a video on how to get the damn battery out. I have a pigtail installed on mine, but the bike and my summer car won't fit in the garage at the same time. There is no power in the storage unit where I keep the bike. I wanted to pull the battery out and put it inside for winter. I nearly pulled my hair out trying to get that battery out. I finally gave up, and put it back together. Still can't figure out how the damn thing comes out. It just will not clear the plastic. Same bike (2014).

thank you for the effort and the sharing. two questions: 1-i always thought you install a pigtail with the type that comes with an inline fuse. i'm not challenging-i am a total newb-i am simply asking. 2-i will be picking up my 2013 fjr later this week. any links as to how to get access to the battery on a 2013 fjr? thumbs up.

I have a 2013 and its the same process except, there is an additional screw in the front right corner that is entirely hidden by the lower dashboard section. The 2013 requires removal of the lower dashboard as well. I just did it for the first time and it took fifteen minutes.

The more I look at your video the more pissed off I'm getting... I just bought a used one with 20 000miles, and this black plastic panel is semi-broken in that top-right corner and whatever I've done the plastic cover didn't come off... I wasn't ready to break that panel just yet this afternoon... If the bike doesn't start in the cold morning - -3 degrees Celsius - that panel will break. I have to get to the bloody battery.;)) Thanks for the videos!

Did I miss it or did you? There's another screw, most fwd corner behind the upper plastic cover. I'm prying and trying to pivot this piece out only to discover this other phillips screw in the corner. I was able to pry the upper cover up and unscrew it but it sure would be a trick to get it back in w/o removing the upper cover. 2013FJR

I am going to install my pig tail tomorrow on my bike, and I will do a video about it, and put it on my channel. +TwoWheelObsession , thanks for doing this video. I was wondering if you have done a video about installing the skinny lights that you can cut on this channel? I know you did one about the lights in the trunk, but I was curious about the other lights on the outside of the bike. I have attempted to try and solder some of them together, but I get very nervous, and my hands shake a lot, so I use the steady cam feature in Power Director 10 to reduce it some, when I am holding the GoPro.
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 9 лет назад
+renegadebiker24 I look forward to your vid! I don't have any outside lights installed, not sure what you mean.
@renegadebiker24
@renegadebiker24 9 лет назад
TwoWheelObsession Yeah, I will be producing it soon after I get my trip to see my nephew video produced. That one is about a little over an hour long. This one will be shorter than that. That is what I mean, the outside lights that are used for show in bike shows, I think, like the LED strip lights, that can be used to show off the engine.

Why can't they have a door on that side like the other side for battery access?
@rleslie66
@rleslie66 6 лет назад
How very true. I have been on a ride, on multiple occasions, when it became necessary to access my battery, fortunately it was under the seat.
@SR71BBFLYER
@SR71BBFLYER 6 лет назад
Good suggestion Jimo368. My only thought is, even if they weather strip the door from the elements weather stripping eventually deteriorates. They last thing they’d want is a liability issue with water leaking into the battery compartment. I could be totally wrong but that’s the only reason I could think they wouldn’t. 🤷🏽‍♂️

That's strange. I have 2014 model as well, but my panel doesn't have screws, it has 2 allen head bolts and 2 push pins. Same on both sides of dash panels, no philips head screws of any kind.
@TwoWheelObsession
@TwoWheelObsession 9 лет назад
Most likely your dealer used different fasteners then. That is all assembled by them out of the crate.
@Burnspot2024
@Burnspot2024 9 лет назад
TwoWheelObsession I have a feeling the dealer mixed up your fasteners; parts schematic calls for Hex heads for the rear and forward fasteners that are Philips on yours. Installed my '15's pigtail today and they're hex head. This is also the case for Gen II's...my '07 has a silver-colored hex head, with plastic washer, in the forward hole and a black-colored hex head, no washer, in the rear. Video helped figure out these new-fangled snapping panels, by the way. Thanks!
