i pray my jeep is still covered under warranty after watching, this guy sounds like a more mellow version of me trying to fix something without yelling the F word so loud people 2 streets away can hear me
@@joshmatthew4125 You should have made a video of your repair. I need to replace mine and not wanting to follow his video! His instructions/narrative is great though! Lol
Your commentary is hilarious and accurate! My mechanic will be agreeing with everything you say when I show him this video. We have all the guides to do it but NOTHING like a DIY RU-vid video to forewarn us! THANK YOU! (Wish him luck doing this one tomorrow lol )
HOLY SH!T!!! I'm only 9 minutes in, but you have convinced me to take it to the dealer to get it fixed. Or maybe I'll just wait until June and reset the codes, then trade it in.
dunno if you guys cares but if you're bored like me atm you can stream all the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my girlfriend recently :)
Thanks for the vid. I used a mirror and flashlight to guide 1/4” drive extension w 10mm deep socket straight on to low right screw then put a little electric tape around head of bolt and put in socket so it wouldn’t fall out during reinstallation
My renegade threw a p0128 today and I am so thankful for this video. Love that car when everything is working but I hate it when it things break for this very reason. I'm praying that this is the problem and not some dumb sensor if I have to go through this much effort to replace it.
@Lerai Palmer not yet lol. Honestly haven't noticed much of a difference unless its sub freezing temperatures. I plan on fixing it when it warms up a little bit, but for now its too cold and not a big enough deal to justify working on it quite yet.
Thanks for the video!!! It helped me on my 2017 Jeep Renegade. I like the the way you took the time to explain how each connector works. There are so many different kinds, I might have broken one otherwise. I am from the old days were changing a thermostat was very simple, like a 15 minute job with easy access. I got big laughs out you pointing out the stupidity of how they make modern engines. I'm convinced the engineers that make modern engines are the ones that got the lowest grades in college. They ought to make these people work on what they design. Actually I don't think these engines are made in Germany (not that they don't make crap too), but I think I saw on mine somewhere that it was made in Italy. So worse than Germany. I actually removed the pump thing above the thermostat instead of the battery. The battery looked like way too much hassle. Anyway, thanks!
Yes, it's a pain. I cut about an inch off the one I did, because I poked a hole in it with my hook tool. Italy, and Germany is only a country away that is the size of an average state. It's all the same. They are in cahoots over there. It is a Volkswagen disguised as a Fiat disguised as a Chrysler product.
I thought this was Italian/fiat but either way thoroughly enjoyed this video. Certainly shows the aggravation we all experience when dealing with some schmucks poor design and dude didn't sugar coat it. Lets you know what you're in for. This buds for you!
I love this guy! Excellent commentary. Whatever you do don't stop making these videos and please keep talking through it all. Thank you thank you thank you! Very helpful and I watched it a couple times b4 getting into this thing but I really enjoyed this video. 100%
I felt every word you said because I changed this thermostat in a 2015 jeep grand cheeroky and man what a case I cant forget about that. I love my corolla nothing fancy
Thank you man! I've been driving with this light on for the last couple of months because it's been cold in MI. And at the time there weren't many videos on this. This and your video of the fan replacement are great!
I lost it when you said "assholery". Lmao. My fiancé's Mom's 2015 Jeep Cherokee needs a thermostat. The dealer quoted her $450.00 to replace the thermostat and coolant. Ouch.
last thermostat i replaced was on my 1962 Chevy Biscayne, str 6 cyl. 2 bolts right in front of you, done in 2 minutes. im getting the p0128 code on my Renegade, it will be going to the dealer ;-)))
I just did one of these this morning, and used your video to help with that bottom right bolt. What a POS. A Jeep Renegade used to be a V8 powered Wrangler, now it's an over-engineered, Italian-made, 4 banger turd... BTW thanks for the great video! From Iowa!
@@RustBeltAuto Yeah, it reminded me of a BMW/Audi hybrid. Plus all the hose clamps on THIS one were one-time use, I suppose...so I had to cut them off. What a joke.
My H3 Hummer was just as bad. My sister needs me to replace her jeep's thermostat. Her repair shop quoted her $600.00 to do the job. I looked up the part. It's $43.73. They've got a racket going on! Talk about a Rip off, Jeez!! Thanks for posting the video!
Great video, I will be changing my T-stat in my 2016 Renegade TrailHawk this weekend for the same reason (P0128 code). The engine is produced in Michigan and the Renegades are built in Italy nothing German about this engine!
If you have ever worked on a Volkswagon, you might agree with me. I see some of the same German parts on it. I put Euro, and German in the same basket. Not much difference. A lot of engineering over there comes from Germany. That thermostat is Korean too, and some Delfi tags on stuff, so what people say it is, and what it actually is, are different things. I'm sure I could find some Mexican parts on it as well if I looked hard enough. It is a Fiat. Just worked on a Chrysler 200. It had Mexican, Alfa Romeo, and American parts that I could see. Lots of outsourcing. Strange birds these newer Chrysler's. Saturn made mistakes with Opal, and others probably like this. Hopefully it doesn't end them like Saturn, and Saab. They get billions of tax credits from us, so they should be okay.
Going to be doing this soon. What about the coolant after? Just fill it back up? I know some cars have a valve to release air when filling back up.. does this car have anything like that? Or is it just finish the thermostat, and fill the coolant. Hope that makes sense.. thanks for this!
I did one of these today for the first time and not knowing any better I just left that bracket on near the thermostat and was able to replace the thermostat
They use all those plastic clippy clip clips to make it more difficult so you are forced to bring it to the dealer to bend you over with the labor cost to fix it.
Just did this today. Pain in the butt. Not to hard just a process of removing the battery, computer and a bunch of wiring harness clips. You need a deep 10mm to get the lower right bolt. 2016 ram promaster city .
I took all my tools out to replace this hunk of junk for my mother-in-law... I took one look and said nope... it’s a fiat nightmare... dealer ship wants $800 to replace a thermostat????? And my guy said $600..... wtf it’s a thermostat.. What is this, a Porsche or a bmw in hiding?
😂 My boy was getting frustrated with the Germans... Love the video but definitely hoping to find a different mechanic doing this job. No offense bro. I love the video... Had me rollin the whole time 😂 Thanks
Did this and after reconnecting everything my car is throwing about 30 codes and won't start. Think the ECU isn't connected somehow. Any recommendations?
Well i was going to do this on my daughter's 2016 latitude instead of taking to dealer and getting ove4 charged ( ripped off) but after watching this, i dont know if i feel like tackling it. Great video though man thnx
@@RustBeltAuto thnx for replying. Yes it does sound like a common issue on this part. I would also like to mention back in November 2018 the vehicle im talking about 2016 Latitude 2.4 ltr. It developed a miss out of nowhere, being bought brand new with 55,000 miles on it now, took it to the dealer thinking it was covered under warranty, but it was not. They said it was a spark plug and or wire that needed replaced. My daughter not knowing what to, told them to go ahead and fix it as she needed her vehicle asap, they charged her over $600.00. When I seen the receipt and what they replaced, I couldn't believe it. The charges were mainly all labour. I love Jeeps but I am very dissapointed. These problems should not be on a brand new vehicle right at 2 yrs old. Now the thermostat is bad I guess, the engine light is on. The heat takes forever or sometimes never gets warm. When we checked it at local Autostore, the code says something to do with that. Im sure that would be another 6-$800 fix at the dealer. Thnx again
I hope your wife gives you the narcissistic supply you desire to make it all worth your while, as it was worth it somehow for Chrysler to wind up in bed with Fiat to get theirs.
Would be a great video if it wasn't for all your whining and complaining. I hear enough of that at work. Other than that it's a very good tutorial. Thanks for posting. It helped me out.
Thanks for the vid. My girlfriend’s heat works only at idle and blows cold air when driving. Would that be a t-stat problem? Her engine light has been on too for a while w Tstat code
Hey rust belt quick question, i broke the plastic when trying to disconnect the upper radiator hose, will i need to buy a new radiator? Or is there a way to reattach the hose to the radiator in another way?
Hi, I'm about to change my 2015, Jeep Renegade, Trailhawk 2.4L Thermostat. I ordered a new one on Ebay ($40.00) and it arrived yesterday...However, since watching your video, I'm a little concerned. My new thermostat is off centered like the old one you took out. I am able to center it by using my thumb and finger nail however (Although it's not loose), it still worries me. I'm wondering if someone is off-loading defective thermostats on the cheap via Ebay...It did come from a private residence down in Florida. It's the exact duplicate of the new one you put in. South Korea, Morpar authentic #....Do you have any thoughts on it and to the diagnosis you made of the old one you took out...In regards to being off center. I'd appreciate any feed back...Thanx.
You’re so wrong about where it’s made it’s made in Italy. I thing like a vw and German engineering is far superior than American and bruh it’s been Italian for years and now is French so learn who makes it first before you sound stupid and dumb about shit you should know and your garbage man get over it you had to work on a ITIALIAN jeep you moron
I am currently fighting this bullshit to do my sister a favor which she doesn't even appreciate and it is pain in the ass jobs like these that make me miss working on my 1977 Silverado. These jeeps are a joke and not a funny one either. The struggle is real with these jeeps
My thermostat works fine, heat, good Temps in hot and cold weather. Just that stupid service engine light comes on because of this. Wouldn't it be worth it to try a new sensor first? I got a simple OBDII using Torque app to reset the light now to regain 4wd back. If a mechanical thermostat works then it could be a faulty sensor.
It's usually always a thermostat. It's actually a thermostatic time code. It needs to get to operating temperature in a specified amount of time for emissions. When the wax in the thermostat motor gets distorted, coolant passes through it too early, and it takes too long to heat up.
I did one of these yesterday Ive been wrenching for 30yrs and this was the worst t stat I have ever done. I almost destroyed the upper hose getting it off the housing.
I like the old s4's, and Audi v6 when you need to remove the front bumper cover, unbolt bumper, front of engine, and timing belt to get at it. Easy sell on a timing belt replacement. That is really stupid. Germans make up all kinds of retarded foolishness like this.
Tackling this on my wifes renegade with 46,000 miles. Never had a thermostat fail so quickly on a vehicle before. Should I go aftermarket part since the Mopar one is obviously not great quality?
i just did one of these on a cherokee. and i thought i was mechanically inclined. absolutely absurd design. engineers have no regard for repairs/service.
Lab coat engineers. Repairs/service, doesn't enter their minds. They make a product that caters to consumers. The consumers usually have no idea what they are really buying. That is reality.
@@RustBeltAuto thanks. I called the dealership and told them to set the part and concentrate antifreeze out for the wife to pick up on her way home from work and of course they give her 50/50 so I'm hoping 1 gallon will cover it. Thats why i ask.. Thanks again!
@@RustBeltAuto that's good news. The all data procedure only shows the method with the tool and some dodge techs told me they were extremely finicky to get the air out of. 🤷
If the tab is gone there should be nothing holding it on. It may be broke, but there is something in there. When the tabs are stuck broke, I can usually use a hook pick to get in there, and pull them up from the inside.
I bought my son a 2015 Renegade. 8 months later the lights comes while he is at college, good news would be that its in the open position when it does this. So, he can drive back home. Gonna work on it this weekend while he is home for spring break. Dealer wants $500 to do this repair. Did I mention I am putting my kid through college. Who has $500 laying around, geeez!
I took that little air box remove the bolts gave me more room took a E5 socket removed those bolts holding the bracket out of there makes for easier disassemble and assembly threw away the bracket used 1/4 inch flat washers to take up the space worked out great but your rite they are a junk car.
What a pain in the ass to replace. My wife's Renegade thermostat is wonky...I sure as hell will let my son do this. I remember how easy changing thermostats were before all the forced government bullshit was added to cars.
Smells German. Chrysler jumped off the Volkswagon Mercedes train to file bankruptcy, walked across a couple borders, kept the Corp., and kept collecting government tax credits for having an American car company bail out. Neat trick for a failed company.
Sorry to say, but Chrysler screws up a lot. Right now its a tax funded company, because Obama thought it would be a good idea to have taxpayers help them build horrible cars. It was German, and still looks like one to me under that hood, and is really actually a Dutch holding company with a tax domicile in the UK. They basically shuffle some paperwork, and move some things around every time they go bankrupt from manufacturing horrible cars with a tax credit. At this point, you might as well let it go bankrupt again, and let the C.E.O.'s flip a coin to see what company they can infiltrate, and throw darts at a global map, so they can tell you where it's from the next time.
@@RustBeltAuto haha The renegade is Italian. It's built on the Fiat 500x platform. Not German, but definitely different from Domestics, I'll give you that!
