I own a professional painting company, I spend most of my days laboring away making peoples homes or buisness look beautiful again. I love this job because it allows me the opportunity to listen to audio books and lectures like this. I never got the chance to go off to college because I became a young parent at 17, but it's because of videos like this and the work of people like Jordan that I've been able to expand my knowledge. I've read a bunch of the books off of your reading list and the deeper I get into it the more I'm finding out what I'm truly interested in. It's like you say "If somthing is bothering you, it's your problem. That's your calling to figure out and solve it". Thank you for what seems like an endless amount of content (all though I'm chewing through it rather fast) it has provided me with countless hours of engagement.

Knowledge takes so many forms (as I think/hope JP would agree) that there’s no reason at all to couch your profession or experience with some comparison to ‘traditional’ or ‘brick & mortar’ college. Your comment strikes me as ironic but fitting, because despite being college educated, I can’t seem to stain a piece of wood with any level of mastery and would call on you as a brother and friend to help me in acquiring this sort of fundamental, volatile and in many ways more noble skill. The oral traditions and hand craft traditions are a miracle for having survived because they were less tangibly recorded than some others. In so many ways the book learning we seem to be so infatuated with is the easier of the paths, since it is LITERALLY (pun intended) written in books. Thank you for doing what you do, and Godspeed in your journeys alongside Jordan Peterson.

I think Peterson's approach is more 'genius-ology' than 'psychology' - he seems to collate information from the main revolutionary geniuses of humanity and find the truth that runs through the heart of all of their musings/research and disseminate this truth with awesome authority.

Summary: 1 - Freud believed that substantial proportion of the symptoms he saw among his clients were of psychological origin despite of the fact that some of them were manifested physically 2 - Client whose parents taught her that adults were angels 3 - The malevolence look at people’s face and the traumatic experience after that 4 - What is repressed (unbearable memories, often sexual, desires); how do you defend yourself against things that you don’t want to be true? Repression 5 - Being psychophysiological aroused 6 - Displacement 7 - “if you practice something deceptive long enough I think it becomes habitual and unconscious. So i recommend you don't do that unless you want your head full of pathological monsters that you can't control.” (6:40) 8 - Rationalization 9 - “just because you could win an argument with someone doesn’t mean you are right” (7:30) 10 - Intellectualization 11 - Creative people and junguian dreams 12 - Projection 13 - “world class irritating people” (8:50) 14 - Freud’s fundamental theory was that unconscious ideas were at the core of many psychological conflicts 10:00 15 - “unless you can bring the meaning of the traumatic event up and articulate it...” (11:35) 16 - Gottman studies (couple therapy); genius “look at this bird” example 17 - People are very conflict avoidant; “if you don’t deal with those little things, then all the monsters that are packed up inside it will eventually eat you” (14:50) 18 - People make jokes about what is repressed 19 - Facial microexpressions 20 - Freud and dreams (book suggestion: The interpretation of dreams - Freud) 21 - Jung and dreams 20:00 22 - Interpretation of dreams in clinical practice 23 - “if you are stuck in a problem and you can’t solve it... you have to look where you don’t know” (21:30) and one of those places is the dream 24 - Remembering very emotional dreams 25 - Freud, dreams and regression 26 - Treating repetitive dreams 27 - Freud and the dream’s layers 28 - Different interpretations of dreams between Jung and Freud 30:00 - Libido - The infant is a sexual being - Orderliness and disgust sensitivity - Oedipus complex; examples of pathologies in family dynamics (36:40) - A lot of people go to therapy because they can’t get away from their families (38:20); “they are often caught in these ugly nets, often unbelievably ugly nets” - Crumb documentary starts (39:00); it shows perfectly how the family plays into Freud’s pathology

It can haunt you for ages if you don't work on your self being. Jordan saved me with his lectures and I'm getting better as the days passes. Thank you. Listening to your lectures and conversations and talks about depression, demoralizing the youth, psychology, philosophy and everything else that echoes in between. Making the most sense out of the echoes in my own mind that only scream back at me has given me an inner peace that I’ve longed to feel. Who would have known that my echoes have been shared, broken down, and simply moved on to the next issue without the feeling that this guy isn’t talking to me like I don’t know something he doesn’t. Thank you for simply clarifying a few things. For rewording everything to make sense.people like you are ripples in the water. Wherever that water has the chance to stand still for a second or two to then have a sudden cause in change in motion to cause ripples. Ripple that grow and grow and grow. I wonder if this ripples could cause some sick waves to surf on. Or cause a grand wave to gain perspective. Thank you.

A year ago my mother was trying and forcing me to talk about something that she bloody well knew I didn't want to talk about, and that I still don't want to talk about because I hate myself for it and I kept telling her 'i don't want to talk about it leave me the hell alone' and she wouldn't and then I completely blew up and I started screaming at the top of my lungs cursing at her and telling her to shut up and go away. I even lunged at her to attack her but I stopped myself only after the first hit because I didn't want to go to jail for assault. Then she called me a psycho said I needed help began to insult me and then only after she made everything worse did she leave and she turned all the lights off and left me in the dark alone with my pain and my uncontrolable sobbing. I resent her for that. Even writing this brought me to tears. It makes me happy knowing that now her fiance left her because she is a total alcoholic.

Something similar happened to me in public with my aunt. She kept pushing an issue and when I repeatedly said I don't want to talk about it, after about 10 mins of her pushing, I stood up and screamed at the top of my lungs and then walked away. I have never done something like that in my life and it was embarrassing after the fact, and I even ended up apologizing for creating the scene because I knew she'd never acknowledge an explanation of how she overstepped boundaries. My entire family has a propensity to bury any chance for emotional growth while also displaying extreme judgment... pretty much experts of projection.

What makes Peterson the stellar professor and synthesising theorist that he is, is his friction with the actual world, real patients, clinical practice. Moreover his embodied contribution within the psychotherapeutic session (I would say an existential approach to psychotherapy by genuinely empathise with your patient - a great burden in itself - which is quite evident even when he talks about them) gives him a leaps-ahead understanding of reality. Kudos to you professor! I Think you've nailed the essence!

@@tofuman9526 dude, you know very well where the line is. And if you don’t know the differences between one touch and another and the context for them then perhaps you might want to discuss this with your own therapist.

@@user-ms1ue8bd8r I suspect that your knowledge regarding psychotherapy, and the therapeutic alliance, in particular, is very minimal, or perhaps even absent. How can you be sure you are absolutely aware of context completely, it's both arrogant and unprofessional to assume such a thing. No matter how deep you consider your understanding of patient's background, issues, context, etc. One of the first things you learn when you study psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, etc, is that you don't know anything, you just don't realize how much you don't know, and this is humbling. When a therapist takes such a course of action, he *potentially* violates the most fundamental essence upon which therapeutic alliance is based, trust. Nonetheless, I admire the man and have learned so much from him and that helped a lot professionally and personally.

Fantastic series of lectures 👏. My opinion is that he tried to emulate Nietche and pack information into his language. Too much. I suppose it is contextual, but literally 4 weeks of topic in a little over one hour. This series begs for a further/deeper examination by someone competent enough to simultaneously understand the entirety, and parse out the individual.

It's like painting a rapist as considerate...one may say I bring up all the negatives, well if you decide to willingly leave out the negative, I would hope a human would point that out...

Some bad interpretations. If you like the music you imagine your dad lived his youth in (being really alive, assertive, good with girls, have all the your possibilities met, etc) that means you want to live but you are really in a loss, castrated, your life force sucked by your smothering mother. And if with this music you feel the world is good and you can love it is because you are inmersed in this fantasy.
