Your old filter was in upside down. Air flow arrows should point down not up. That's evident be the dirt that collected on top of the old filter. Dirty air comes in through the top. Your new filter did not have an air flow arrow but simply an arrow that identified which side goes up. Kind of hard to get that wrong.
