I review a 2015 Volkswagen Golf S TDI 4-door hatchback with 6-speed manual transmission. This "bare bones" and completely stock S trim clean diesel VW Golf TDI gets excellent fuel economy and has a superb cabin. This car is an enhancement over the mk5 Jetta TDI, which I would consider the best diesel car for a diesel newbie. This new design utilizes an internal chassis code named "MQB architecture" and it shares the same underpinnings as the Audi A3 with front-wheel-drive. Capable of exceeding the EPA estimate 45 mpg on the highway, this car does not disappoint. For more information, go to:

I've always loved the tic tic tic of diesel compression.... Since my 81 VW truck and my 85 VW golf... I've loved that sound - then of course compressing waste veggie oil in those mf made me even more fond. And rebuilding diesel tractor equipment with my dad - made me even more fond of said sound.

+Vlad Saghin Thanks for watching. You are correct, the bare bones Golf TDI actually does come with a lot of great features and benefits. This is my point, because even if you are on a budget, your worst case scenario still gets you a well furnished car with power windows, great fuel economy, comfortable seats, air conditioning, and more! However, some things cannot be upgraded or changed. The rear air vents is one thing, the lack of 115v AC power outlet is another. The mk7 Golf is a great car, even if you get the base, bare bones, stock setup. Those who want heated seats must go from the S to the SE trim as heated seats are not a stand-alone option.

Kumar Rangerboy Thanks for watching. With your commute, you can't go wrong with the Golf TDI. Some things to keep in mind... 1) diesels are very efficient, but you'll notice that winter MPG's will be slightly lower than summer MPG's - this is not a major concern. 2) Diesels take longer to warm up in the winter, even though there's an electric heating element in the HVAC, you'll want the SE trim with the heated seats for that extra boost of warmth on cold mornings. The Golf is very quiet and comfortable. There's also the VW Jetta and Chevy Cruze - all under $30k. The VW Passat TDI is large and probably not ideal for commuting if you don't need the interior space... plus it's slower than the Golf and doesn't come with a manual transmission like the Golf or Jetta. Have fun!

This is a nice review. One question, how is the engine cooled? Does this car have a radiator? or is it cooled by air?
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 9 лет назад
Thanks for watching. The TDI is liquid cooled like a standard engine. A diesel engine is more thermally efficient than a gasoline engine, so staying cool in summer temps is easy. However, winter weather has the opposite effect. If you were to drive a diesel at normal operating temps and idle while parked in 32 degree F temps, you'll notice the temp gauge drop, which is why heated seats would be nice to have. Warm-up in winter mornings take time, but diesels have electric heat coils to boost the climate control effectiveness.

Something quite odd here. My wife and I own two early 2012 Golf TDI manuals. The tank capacity for these vehicles is 14.5 US gallons. Why would VW have diminished the capacity for the new 2015 Golf to 13 gallons? Does NOT make sense. We easily have exceeded 700 miles on a tank of fuel on several occasions, sometimes averaging over 50 mpg in a mix of city/highway driving for that tank of fuel. We could make that journey between Austin and El Paso, no problemo. Also, our TDI's do not require Adblue. I'm sure the new Golfs are terrific, but I gotta say, I think I'm happy we bought two German-made, larger capacity fuel tank, manual-transmission VW's that after 80K miles between them, have performed flawlessly, and mine is now just one month short of four years old. Thanks for posting your test. I'm just surprised VW provided the smaller fuel tank on the newer vehicles. THAT does not compute!
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 9 лет назад
I was shocked at the miniscule tank size also. I have two theories. Firstly, the tank is smaller because of the adblue tank and beam rear axle. Secondly, maybe it looks better on paper if the gas and diesel models appear to cost the same to refuel, even if the tank is smaller on the TDI and the range is better on the TDI? If the TDI took on less fuel, it would appear to a new diesel convert that the TDI doesn't cost more to fill up than a GTI. This is more of a conspiracy, actually. I'm just glad that we have a TDI option.
@ecmcomichael1
@ecmcomichael1 9 лет назад
Well, I can't disagree with you. And your theory (theories) may be correct. Or perhaps it could be that little or no thought was put into this issue by VW engineers. 1.3 US gallons just doesn't seem to me to be that difficult of a volume to re-engineer into a large fuel tank. But I agree with you about the TDI option. I so much more enjoy the manner in which the TDI drives as compared to gasoline engines. I don't think I'll ever go back, not as long as VW continues to offer the TDI option!

With the keys, a simple key chain accessory can help. It kinda looks like a spark plug, and disconnects from the main key ring; you could be down to one key, while driving. Just a thought I'd like to point out.

I agree. It's a minor observation. However, so many things were done well on this Golf, and the only thing I dislike is something that can be remedied with your suggestion. The Golf is a remarkable car. Thanks for watching and commenting.

You're very very lucky in the States. In the UK, a barebones S-spec Golf doesnt come with the nice steering wheel, it doesnt have leather seats, it doesnt have alloy wheels either. It does however have the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion engine, which does approx 75mpg on the motorway ("highway")
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 9 лет назад
Nic Shacklock The US Golf TDI is considered more "upscale" than the gasoline version. The bare bones gasoline Golf in the US comes with cloth seats and steel wheels, but it's also ~$18k. A US Golf in SEL trim doesn't get the full-size navigation that is available in Europe. Plus, UK MPG ratings are about 25% higher than US ratings because the imperial gallon in the UK is actually larger than the US customary gallon. The US packages the cars differently, and there's always something that cannot be optioned on a US VW that can be had in the rest of the world.
@klavier285
@klavier285 9 лет назад
+Nic Shacklock na, if you compare the VW lineup for UK vs US you have way more models and trim levels to choose from. US basically gets offered neutered versions of the European spec.

Great review, very informative. One question that is keeping me on the fence: Someone told me that diesels dont last long if you drive mostly in the city. I find that hard to believe but wanted to get everyone's thoughts. thank you.
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 9 лет назад
cassmanio Thanks for watching! The main component in modern diesels is the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which is integrated into the exhaust system. The DPF heats up and burns off trapped soot in the filter, and uses diesel fuel to build up heat. In a lot of city driving, a diesel may not get enough load and stress to warm up properly. Also, if a city diesel is driven in short cycles, then the DPF may never reach maximum burn temp and maintain its regeneration cycle long enough to be effective. A diesel limited to short trips and city driving (stop and go) its entire life, then, yes, a diesel is not ideal. However, if a city diesel is used a few times a month to go out of town, then it would have a chance to burn off trapped soot in the DPF and fully regenerate. If the DPF can never fully regenerate, then it will never burn off and it will need to be replaced before the end of its designed useful life. The DPF should last past 100k miles. Personally, if I was looking for a used diesel, I would choose one with higher than average miles and low wear and tear. I would not consider a "low mileage" diesel unless I knew those miles were on someone's travel car - to get between homes a few times a year.

***** That's true Dex. Thanks a lot. I guess the problem is not city driving, but more, driving short cycles not allowing the engine to reach proper temperature right? Thanks again.

Hey, Diesel Review, I'm planning a Jetta TDI. should i get a manual or DSG ? i wish to have a golf but we Indians don't get the Golf here.
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 лет назад
+nakul singh Good question. I have never been to India, so I can't really determine what's better for you. However, the manual will probably save you money during your purchase. The DSG does require maintenance at ~40k miles but a manual would need a new clutch eventually. You should try to drive both versions before making a decision. In heavy traffic, I actually like to use a manual. A DSG is great and even better if there are shift paddles on the steering wheel. DSG transmissions do have clutches, so it may require new clutches in the long term, and there are two clutches in a DSG. Also, DSG has what I call a clutch slip when it feathers in 1st gear from a complete stop. In heavy traffic, this DSG clutch slip may be difficult to deal with since you'll be using your brakes to control your speed when traffic is crawling. I like a manual because I can engage 1st gear at engine idle speed without stalling or riding the brakes. At high speeds, DSG downshifts well. Also DSG is programmed to maximize engine torque and efficiency. I like a manual because I can control when I will use torque. Thanks for asking!

+Diesel Review Thanks, btw a lot of people seem to suggest škoda Octavia MK3 as it is based of VW MQB platform and drive somewhat like the golf and it costs similar to VW Jetta. the jetta is on PQ35 platform, that's i think is shared with MK5 Golf. Plus ŠKODA offer tremendous amount of space it's bigger and lighter compared to Jetta. should i get the škoda or VW ?
@DieselDrives
@DieselDrives 8 лет назад
+nakul singh We don't have Skoda in USA, although I did declare that our current Jetta in the US should be replaced with the Skoda Superb. The MQB platform is also used in the Audi TT and Audi A3, so I'd agree that MQB is ideal. You will want to pay attention to the rear suspension. I'd choose an independent rear rather than a solid beam. In the US, the Golf (MQB) has a solid beam while the Audi TT and A3 use independent. I'm not sure what Skoda has on the Octavia. The MK5 Golf based Jetta in the US came with an independent rear setup, but switched to solid beam for mk6. The 2015 Jetta went back to independent. MQB platform is widely used across many models of that size, and parts should be easy to find in the future.

Mike Cunningham Yes, I was mentioning the 2006-2010 Jetta. However, the 2006 TDI has a different engine from later years, there was no 2007 or 2008 Jetta TDI in the US, and 2009 and 2010 were the last years of that body but they varied differently with the interior. For the MK5 Jetta TDI, each year was very different.

I know what you're saying. From a strictly economic standpoint, when gas is pretty affordable, it doesn't really seem all that necessary. Gas engines have far better acceleration and so on, but again, what the person who commented said. Diesel engines are far better overall, especially if you do a lot of driving, even in the city. Plus the sound of the diesel engine is so cool.
