I did something similar except mine mounts using the CD player slot. i also added a front facing camera that utilizes the OEM head unit...No need to upgrade to the 2020 lol :)

There's ways to add CarPlay to your factory headunit if it didn't come with CarPlay. My sister's 2019 Tacoma doesn't have CarPlay but my other sister's 2021 Tacoma does have CarPlay. CarPlay > iPad. Forget aftermarket stereos, they don't look as good as factory.

Tethering the iPad to the iPhone won’t get you an effective nav system. The response of the display while tethering is way to slow for accurate gps navigation. You will miss turns because of the tethering response.

I also almost paid someone to install car play until I got priced out lol. This is a great video except for one thing. The iPad you use need to have GPS receiver which means you need to have a cellular version of iPad. Mine is WiFi only. So I have to buy the Garmin GPS receiver. Still way much affordable and better than car play imo.
