The bass section never gets enough credit for how hard they work on these types of things, especially the contras who have to carry that soul eating beast on their shoulder the whole time.

God, I miss Drum Corps. My college professors poo pooed it, saying I should take trumpet lessons and learn a variety of music over the Summer. I beg to differ. After my age out year, I came back to college and earned the principal trumpet spot in every ensemble. I even performed with the faculty chamber ensemble. I am now a professional trumpet player. I'm 35, for what it's worth. This is all true and if you have a love for Drum Corps, PLEASE join one if only for one year.

Totally agree. My son was a tenor in Cavaliers for 6 years and now plays professionally in NYC and all over the world with various ensembles. Yes, he makes a good living "as a drummer". He very often runs into other percussionists who will admit they too were in a corps. Professional musicians basically "look down" at drum and bugle corps... *Marching band?*-- but there is no doubt there are values and technics that are learned there that you just can't get anywhere.

the reason "tuba" was yelled every rep is to prepare them for the horns up. those shit's weigh 20-25 pounds.

yamahas maybe whch is what crown uses, however they can get up to about 48 lbs with the jupiter quantams

Ivan Bigelow technically contras are g bugles (contrabass bugle) but it's kinda turned into a term for tubas as well

I'm guessing so they can either have their horns at a carry or up before everyone else because it is hard to snap a heavy tuba up as quick as the other horns.
