Fixing the oil leak on my 2016 Chevy Malibu LT 1.5L. The head gasket was the source of the leak. The new head gasket is improved, should stop the leaks.
Bought the wife a '16 Malibu 1.5T. after a while I noticed it was leaking (and seeping) oil. I dug around a bit but couldn't find the source. I've done a lot of work to cars over the years so I'm not a novice, just haven't had the time to really tear into it. I fear it's the head gasket but I haven't confirmed that yet. Runs great
@@dilldowschwagginz2674my girl is having this problem. It runs great. But oil from the head is leaking and causing burn off smoke. 2016 1.5. So this is a common issue. And it’s pretty sad.
@@producedbydoeselo2293 fortunately it turned out to not be the head gasket BUT the increased manifold pressure from the turbo did ultimately cause the leakage. Car still runs great though
Hey! Thanks for posting this. I have a 2016 1.5L in the shop right now, and there's oil everywhere. Now I know where it's coming from. I suspected the head gasket, but your video confirmed my suspicions.
I can guarantee you this engine has always been filled with 4.2 quarts, not a drop more. Chevy changed the gasket design on the new one, to a tried and true design. They left off the printed seal around the oil passages on the original one trying to save a buck. The new one has the printed seal where needed. I can say, 4K+ miles and my floor is still clean since the repair.
that makes no sense, shouldn't be telling people false issues for overfilling the engine oil. most common issues are crank and ring damage, which are actually alot worse than an oil leaking head gasket.
@@LygerTheCLaw You can listen to Darren Pferdehirt and get a decent idea of the maintenance this car went through. These engines are not for conventional oil changed at 10k intervals. You have to fill with dexos oil at the right volume or you get excess pressure and oil where it shouldn't be. "Head gasket is notorious for leaking oil" (google that; maybe a dozen reports and not a thing) "this is your passage here that's sealed. mm k? This is exterior here this is sealed here. But there's oil under all these. mm k? There's oil where it shouldn't. That oil is what has been finding its way to the ground. It shouldn't be any oil that's sealed. That's full of oil. All of these shouldn't have anything in there. Good job Chevrolet doing your best to drive customer's away."
@@campb292tube This is so true. It isn't easy to fill oil in these because they are designed to drain to the pan slow. Leads to a lot of overfilling. Another major issue is coolant. The manual says coolant at 150,000 miles. However in the footnotes it is 150,000 or 5 years. Coolant starts to break down and become less effective around 5 years. That is why you see so many of these posts at the 6 or 7 year mark. The coolant is totally busted down and overheating ruins head gaskets. People have no idea how to maintain cars today. It's lazy entitlement of knuckle draggers.
same issue with my 1.5T '16, it started around 60k and i have been pushing it off and just cleaning up the oil leaks periodically. it hasn't gotten significantly worse with age but its annoying to have a near new car start leaking oil. and theyre not so simple for the DIYer to work on anymore.
New car? A 2016? It's at least 7 years old. Change your oil regularly with the right oil or you get this. Save money on the front end or pay big on the back end. I have 150,000 miles on my 2016 1.5 with zero oil usage and no leaks. I do it the right way.
@@campb292tube Same I have 125k on my 2017 1.5T and no issues at all. You must change oil with dexos oil and change it every 5k. You must change the coolant at 5 years or you get head gasket issues. Owner's today are too lazy.
@@LygerTheCLaw Within 3 years would have been under the bumper to bumper warranty or the powertrain warranty. If you ignored and let it go, on you. Maintenance is very important in these small turbos. Forget the change the coolant at 5 years, problems. Mess with oil, problems. Live and learn.
How much would this cost to fix at a shop? I am having the same problem; thanks for the video! Also, what are the long-term problems if this is not fixed?
I've heard of dealers charging upwards of $3500. I had $300 or so into this job, and 15 hours of my time. Long term, your garage floor gets real messy. The engine appears to have a low oil level sensor, to warn you if it gets down low enough.
@@cjmatthews6096 there's a bit of markup there for parts. That's a bit under what I've been seeing when I was researching the job. The good news it, it's fixed, isn't leaking on my garage floor anymore.
I’m having the same issue. The mechanic told me the gasket was leaking oil. I found it odd because the car wasn’t running hot. If it isn’t blown, why is it leaking oil only? 2016 Chevy Malibu. Estimate $3500.
It appears they used a coating on the outer layers of the gasket that didn't work out long term, as oil was allowed to seep by. The new one is a different composition, looks more like the Felpro print-o-seal style gaskets.
Just coming across this video. I’m having the same issue on mine. Did you buy another OEM gasket or is there a different brand that is better? Will a replacement OEM gasket just do the same thing as the original?
I bought the OEM kit from the dealer for about $80, comes with necessary gaskets and head bolts. The new gasket is an improved design, it has the printed silicone seal around the perimeter like Fel-Pro and other gaskets, and after 25k miles is still dry.
Mr. Darren, are you in Dallas, or even Texas? Can I bring my car to you🤦🏽♀️...lol? I was given a quote of $3600 to do gaskets, top oil pan, and lower oil pan, by a trusted repair shop. The dealership was almost double😠. Right now, I'm just gently driving it, keeping an eye on my oil levels, and Trusting GOD, That It Doesn't Stop, or Become A Fire Hazard, until I can afford repairs. I've had to have the turbo charger replaced twice...May 2017, and April 2021 ($1800). Of course the dealership kept ignoring my concerns over the past few years...and I quote, "cannot duplicate the issue", until the warranty went out😖, which resulted in me having to pay for 2nd turbo on last year, for a 2016 vehicle. It hasn't run properly since 2017. My ex spouse has already had to replace the engine in his 2016. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVY OR GM PRODUCT AGAIN!!! Lady I, yes this should be a recall.
The dealership recently informed me that this is my issue. However, they’ve also indicated that the cost for repair is $3000. Is it true that maybe an engine swap would be more cost effective over replacing the head gasket?
No, you'd probably get an engine that will develop the same issue in the future. The updated head gasket appears to be doing a good job so far, 11 months and 17k miles, no leaks noted.
No, the seal in a can stuff is for rubber seals, like anything with a shaft spinning in it. It softens them up, swells them, stops leaking for a bit, then all of them leak.
I just picked up my car from Chevy today and they said my car has a head gasket leak and its leaking oil. WHY is this not a recall which it should be not fair 🤦🏾♀️ want to charge me $4,200
If it did, you'd probably find that the coolant would be mixing with oil. You can get a kit to test your cooling system for leaks by pressurizing it. They are under $50 on Amazon, just make sure you get the adapter that fits your car with the kit.
My car is doing the same thing dealer wants to charge me 4,000, how is your car doing since you changed the gasket, I’m wondering if I should have it fixed or trade this car in. I will never buy a Chevy again
