2016 Chevrolet Equinox AWD Engine Removal (2.4L)
I'm pretty happy with this.
First ever voice over DIY and I like it WAY more than my previous "hey bud try to read these tiny words on the bottom of your screen" style DIY's 😂
Pretty straightforward if you’re a tech, DIY guys I think I covered just about everything but I did have some camera issues throughout the day so not every nut and bolt was filmed. Sorry ‘bout it.
Really all you miss is the transfer case removal, which is straightforward in and of itself. Remove bracket/rear trans mount, remove bolts, remove t-case. 👌
But as usual, any questions, just ask!

Thanks for Sharing. My Chevy Captiva with 220,000 miles timing chain fail and remove the valve cover and chain was all loose. I still think should just replace the chain or the whole engine.
@RiggsCo
@RiggsCo 2 года назад
Assuming it was running OK (although probably riddled with cam position codes) you’d be fine doing just the chain, guides, and tensioner. We replaced this engine because it was ran on no oil and was down on compression as a result. Chain was done 30k miles prior, by the dealer, who was recommending it be done again as a misdiagnosis. These engines have two major flaws, the chains and the PCV system. If you’re doing any kind of tear down to do the chains, it’s a good call to pop off the intake manifold and clean that hole (shown in video) out to prevent further issues. However if you’ve made it to 220k with no PCV issues you’re probably OK 👌

I had a 2016 Equinox. It was built to resemble the 2017 as GM gave the Equinox a midcycle refresh to update its appearance. I liked how roomy the interior was and how it handled, but that was pretty much it. The transmission shifts hard, which is something I ignored when driving it. The 2.4L engine it had was adequate to keep the vehicle going, but it lacked in power when it came to acceleration and climbing hills. This engine is more ideal for a sedan and not an SUV. The Equinox is too heavy for it. I tried to coax a little more power out of it by adding a cold air intake and was going to install an exhaust kit for it, but I crashed it last year and it was totaled. Owning the Equinox killed my liking for Chevy and GM as GM cars as a whole are not that well built as they were in my childhood. I decided on getting a Toyota Camry and it's everything I wanted in a car.

Hi. I have a Buick Verano 2013 - same set up. I only drive around 7k miles a year, mostly short 1 to 3 mile each way trips. Totally forgot to keep checking my oil for a while and when I did, it was 2 quarts low! I was planning on getting the timing chain and water pump changed out this month anyway because I bought the car with 88k miles on it 3 years ago and now there's 104,500. But... there's a rattle now - which I suppose is the timing chain. The engine never spiked on the temp gauge or anything while driving. The Carfax shows important services done before I got it. Do you think I've royally screwed the engine? I have no leaks anywhere I can see, the oil has been changed since and they didn't mention any leaks. (I have always had soot on my tailpipe since I got it.) My only other problem with the car is my PCV breather tube has not been connected soundly in no clue how long. I didn't know when I got the car that the stem/tube from the valve cover over the throttle body - GM calls it a "Air Cleaner Outlet Duct" lol. I found that funny. That stem/tube thing that goes in the breather hose snapped off and just sits up against the "Air Cleaner Outlet Duct". I bought a new duct for $100 and was pissed to see it's plastic on plastic soldered with PLASTIC!! Anyway, do you think there's a bunch of damage due to the pcv system not having a vacuum? I mean it's probably clogged up anyway, right? Lol. Do you think either of these things happening means the car is doomed? I can take the engine apart, but getting the car back together where it's operational is an entirely different matter. I need a car that runs, not a bucket of bolts. ha ha. Thanks for your videos! P.S. I'm going to clean up the pcv system and I did get a pressure release oil cap in case that helps with anything. Oh and this pdf is very informative on the entire PCV system including what's in the valve cover for anyone who may be interested. www.opelgt.com/attachments/gm-gen-ii-ecotec-pcv-system-pdf.442052 A new valve cover & gaskets is only $120 so I'm curious why if a DIY person has a lot of miles on the vehicle and the PCV baffles in it can get so crappy, why not just swap it out with a new one? Same for the intake manifold. W/gaskets/seals whatever you call it only $97. Why waste time cleaning these up, not to mention you get dirty when new ones are so cheap? Then just use the CRC GDI IVD Valve cleaner occasionally to keep it clean? Anything wrong with that idea? I can manage a valve cover and my brother would help me with the intake manifold. Thank you in advance!

Thank you so much for this. About to attempt a top pull this weekend. My Equinox stalled at a light, pulled over to check oil, crankcase was pressurized when pulling dipstick, it was 3 quarts low, topped er up, finished my errand, parked it, next morning giant oil puddle and wetness between engine block/bell housing. New rear main seal, here we go.

Happy to help! Biggest tip I can give you is do all of the topside stuff I did in the video (pull the intake and the alternator/AC) and you’ll have tons of room 👌 Only thing missing in my video is the t case removal, but it is straight forward once you have the passenger axle pulled you’ll be able to see all the mount/t case bolts you need to remove. Good luck! Any questions along the way just ask! 👍

If a 2.4 is using 3qts per 1000miles, but NOT leaking out the rear main, does that mean the rings are wasted and has to be rerung, or could it still be just a PCV issue? I've got tons of black soot at the tailpipe, but it doesn't smoke while it's running. GM has a TSB for the 2011 Equinox as having inferior oil rings, but not anything newer, even though it's the same engine till 2017.
@RiggsCo
@RiggsCo Год назад
Most likely a PCV issue. If there’s a TSB for rings they probably solved the issue with a different ring supplier during that model year so likely won’t have any issues further out. I’ve personally never seen them smoke the rings, but I have seen hundreds of clogged PCV systems…

What do I do to get tc bolts out if the engine is locked up?
@RiggsCo
@RiggsCo Месяц назад
Unfortunately you’re faced with 3 pretty labor intensive options in that case: 1 - Drop the engine, transmission, and front k-frame from underneath, then separate with TC attached (make a huge mess) and cut the bolts/get a new TC. 2 - pull the engine and trans out the front (remove front end) and then separate again with TC attached. Or 3 - drop the oil pan, unbolt the rods, try and turn it over with the crank free. Good luck! 🤝

@RiggsCo
@RiggsCo 2 года назад
Hey Bob, took me about 4-5 hours with a lot of breaks 😂 I have removed a couple before though and have been a mechanic for about 15 years so have a decent tool set. If you’re DIY I’d set aside a solid weekend for R&R if that’s the route you’re going. Swivel sockets will be your friend on the t-case/rear mount. Be sure to remove intake manifold, alternator & AC to give you plenty of room to come out the top 👌 Any questions just ask!

CAN I REPLACE A 4 cylinder EQUINOX with a V6 ENGINE?
@RiggsCo
@RiggsCo 4 месяца назад
Potentially. You’d need the wiring harness and engine computer from a V6 nox to go with it. How well that would communicate with the existing body control module and the rest of the car, I don’t know. In my opinion would be a waste of time, they’re both hunks of shit anyway lol

@joshuacutler3789 Год назад
Can you pull a v6 at the top I do not have a lift
@RiggsCo
@RiggsCo Год назад
Yes you can! You’ll need to pull everything on the belt side including the tensioner to have enough room to pull away from the trans, and pull the radiator and/or the exhaust manifolds to really gain some extra lateral clearance to maneuver it out. It’s a tight squeeze but doable. 👍

After triple checking you got all the bell housing bolts (especially the sneaky guy on the backside, just under the head) and that all torque converter bolts have been removed, you can take a pry bar in/around the starter hole, also there’s a small spot you can pry on the backside where the transfer case used to bolt (or if you’re FWD just the top right side of the bellhousing)
