Hey Clint, another good review! So to review: Full closed - For smooth hard packed dirt trails and pavement. Middle - Great for aggressive pedaling on trails while still pretty stiff but opens up enough on roots and rocks. Great for extended climbing with obstacles to keep the rear wheel tracking and still reducing pedal bob. Fully open 1 - Great for extended, rocky, rooty, high speed descents with larger obstacles. You don't expect to have to climb for a while Fully open 2 - Good for lengthy descents with medium obstacles followed in quick succession by shorter climbs without having to quickly switch to Middle position. Balanced. Fully open 3 - Good for descents with medium obstacles followed in quick succession by short, punchy, steeper climbs that require a decent pedaling platform to get up without having to quickly switch to Medium position. In Fully open you would set it to which ever scenario you encounter the most on that trial. This way you only ever switch between Middle and Fully open so your hands stay on the handlebars when it matters. What do you think of that assessment? Feel free to tailor to your experience!
Pretty accurate assessment. Riding in areas with long descents I would say keep the OPEN setting on 1 and just switch to the middle setting when climbing. For all-around trail riding you would choose the middle setting if you like a firmer suspension, especially if you're coming from a hardtail. If you have a smooth pedaling style then I would say ride in the open 2 or 3 position for most of your trail riding.
upgraded my bike with 2021 120 34 factory fork and 2022 190x51 120 factory float dps (1:1 sizes replacement from original rockshox setup) I'm quite heavy around 210lbs on an XL frame, I used the Fully Open 3 mode to try and balance the way the bike jumps when I "hop" with recommanded FOX pressures (but rebound on fastest) and Fully Open 1 the front was clearly pushing me up more than the rear tilting me backwards in the air (original rockshox setup didn't do that) I didn't want to mess with the pressures so I tried Fully Open 3 and I don't feel the bike is trying to make a backflip anymore, the rear wheel is kicking me up as it should, I will ride a bit like that we'll see if I don't write an update it's that I'm happy with it
Interesting video. I have an Ibis Mojo HD3 and I have ran the shock completely open the entire time. This could be the DW link but in the middle the big bump compliance just isn't the same.
Hello . Great Great video 👍 I have q question.. it will fit trek fuel 5 2022? As am looking for rear shock upgrade.. or what would you recommend for me ..
Do you have a video on the CTD. I have the same DPS but trying to set up the sag and the rebound a new CTD for a lady friend (as local shop that it was purchased not super helpful). This video was more helpful thus far with settings than i have found so far. Cheers.
Great review, Clint. I have a 2014 Giant Trance SX with a CTD and I'm trying to decide between the DPS EVOL or the Float X. How do you like the EVOL on your Trance?
+Carlos Rodriguez it's not a night-and-day difference between the EVOL and the ctd. The EVOL has a firmer pedaling platform in the middle of setting. That's the main difference.
Hmmm wondering if I can upgrade my shock to this. I have the EVOL and can’t stand the fact I have to ride in firm to climb and my sag still drops to about 40% in climb mode and the specific psi fox is giving me. I’m almost capped out on the psi specs just to get it close to firm enough.
high speed compression. On bigger hits and or jumps, how does it behave in "trail" and locked position? Will it still allow full travel and will open high speed valves fully?
I don't have the shock anymore but if I recall correctly in the lock position the shock would not move. In the trail position you can still get full travel.
I saw one new for a good price. Seems like it MAY convince me better than the super deluxe? I love firm settings and having 3 pos switch on a shock too like on the deluxe RT3. Do you know if they're STILL custom pre-tuning these for specific bikes, or are non-OEM DPS shocks all the same? I want it for a carbon 29 stumpjumper expert. ~JSV
Honestly, that is probably a question for your local shop. It's been awhile since I've looked into that. There are certain codes that Fox puts on their shocks that correlate to specific tuning. If you could figure out which tuning required for the leverage ratio of the stumpjumper that would lead you in the right direction. But again this is something your local shop should be able to help you with.
Hi Clint! When you ride your friend´s RKT 9 with the same shock, did you like it locked in the middle position? did you missed the open position? thanks
hi i have a 2017 fox dps evol with black coating, the thing is it always bottoms out even when i go down stairs , i weigh about 80kg and have set the pressure to 230 psi. Is there something wrong with it or is it just not enough pressure :p
Its meant to move a little bit when in locked position to prevent it from breaking. Mine just bottoms out really easily in the open and mid selection. Goes almost halfway when locked out
Add the thickest volume spacer..im 200lbs and bottomed out alot with 250psi..now it doesnt and im running lower pressure..rarely get pedal strikes also now
I'm just at your weight (245) and got the DPS EVOL. It does indeed go through the travel quite easily even with 325 psi. It needs volume spacers for sure and I just installed the yellow spacer from the kit and it is time to test. It is very easy to do. 1. Release pressure (slowly) and equalizr Po/Neg chamber by cycling it. 2. Unscrew the body with the shock installed on the bike. It unxcrews off easy just using my hands. 3. Pull the body all the way down, or enough so you've got space to work with. 4. Pull the o-ring and flat shim down a bit on the shaft and install the spacer (check direction). 5. Put back the shim and o-ring and just tighten the body. Done.
Hey Clint, you seem like a really savvy mountain biker, so I thought I'd ask you this question: I ride a specialized epic, with 100mm of travel front and rear. Do you think I should stick with that amount of suspension, were I to upgrade my fork? Increased travel would definitely alter the geometry, but generally speaking should I stick with the factor amount of suspension travel?
+Adrien Hupin I'm assuming your epic is a 29er. I would keep the fork at 100 so as to not throw off the balance of the bike. The only way I would suggest at 120 is if you just feel like the bike is too twitchy for the trails you ride.
Great video! :-) Do you Think it is difficult to change the setting on your shock while riding? I just Got a trance few days ago, without Remote lockout and I only Got 1 ride on it, on a normal road, just trying the bike and tried to get used to full suspension (it is my first time on a full suspension), and I Think that switching between climp, trail or descent was a little bit hard, most because it was awkward to reach the shock and try change setting while riding. How do you make it work? Any tips or advice on how to use it? Or which setting that Can go for everything, like technical trails and descents with some hops and drops? :-)
+jls0439 I typically leave the shock on the middle setting for most riding. When riding in the mountains I will definitely open it up all the way for decents. It's a bit of a long reach and I would not try to do it on a technical Trail. If anything just stop for a second and switch it

I have the same shock on my Anthem 27.5 Advanced, and it seems I can't turn the rebound dial any further than maybe 1 or 2 clicks. Afther that I can't even move it anymore. What do You think is a problem? Should I give it to my bike shop to fix it?
I hope you don't mind me asking but I'm thinking about buying the Anthem 27,5 2 but it looks like there's another shock on the complete bike. Do you know if that's the case. And if that's right why
Fox makes 2 levels of shocks and suspension: Factory and Performance. Factory is the higher end. The aluminum Anthem frameset uses the nicer one, the factory. I guess for budget reasons the complete aluminum bike, the anthem 27.5 to use is the performance. But it still a good shock. One of the main differences is it does not have the Kashima coating. I'm also not sure if it is the DPS shock.
All new anthems come with dps shock and fox32s. Frameset and AA1 come with factory. SX comes w/ performance elite w/ open compression adjustment. The Anthem 2 comes w/ performance suspension. The EVOL sleeve is only available for certain design lengths, and adds 30grams (I don't think it's currently compatible). The performance suspension uses FIT4 and improved air spring fork along with dps shock. So the question is whether the open setting is useful without the adjustable compression. In the video clint says he likes the medium as much as adjusted open, so I figure full open, medium, and closed is a good enough range for the rear. Really glad the medium is dialed in, as thats the most useful setting for this bike in tight singletrack where it would shine. The lack of an adjustable open for the Anthem 2 fox fork is a bit disappointing. Who doesn't want a controlled front end? Using medium on the fork at all times sounds unpleasant, but I may be wrong. A lot of friends used ctd like this though.
I have giant trance 2016 27.5 3 with rock shocks can you pls tell me if this shock is good for my bike I just want something I can lock for hills and is it silly if I only change the back to fox and keep the front rcksocks
+hal316 without riding that bike it's hard for me to give an opinion but I don't think the giant would spec shock that didn't complement the ride characteristics of the bike. Does it have a lockout?
Does the evo is like the dps that feels a bit stiff.. my commencal meta am v3 doesnt lock even if you put it in lock position, i dont know if its the design of the frame that makes my meta v3 makes the suspension play or the shock it self, im thinking of changing it to dps or evo im just worried spending then it wont make any changes since ive read that the meta frame v3 makes the shocks moves even if its lock position. I dont know. 🤔
Elmer Bais i have this same problem with mine too.. especially when im climbing..it will sag about 40-50%% from the beginning of a stroke..i have the 2015 dps evol ..btw
not really I had a mid-range rockshox setup before and it locked tight but was ultra soft un-pedalable unlocked, this one is probably like yours..if you set rebound to slow/firm pump it on the recommanded pressure then yes it's firm but not lock-out I do more road, gravel than terrain...recently made a 39miles 4550feet climb at 13-15% >< and it moved a good 0.4-1.2" up and down, haven't messed with the spacers and such I guess you can use that, but a softer ride was what I wanted myself so haven't tried
+Waseem Abdelaziz if the eye to eye measurement is the same then it would be. Sometimes you can get these in different lengths so I would check with your local shop.
+ponpon 0908 the DPS shock has a firmer middle platform then the ctd. I like the way the middle platform on the DPS releases when you hit a bump. I feel the valving is better on the DPS.
I think the EVOL air can is the biggest upgrade you can do for your air shock. The DPS really helps if you use the mid and high compression damping, but if you leave it open, the air can is to me a game changer.
