Those "Fake" air vents on the hood that you mentioned, are actually functional. Those are the intakes for the engine, as the entire hood is an airbox, funneling the air from the hood, into the four intakes in the top of each fender. Those are clearly visible in your underwood shots, and this is the case with all the big Ranger Rovers in the current gen. That's part of way the fording depth of the entire line of the big boys was raised several inches...the intakes being moved to the hood, as opposed to the old location on the side of the fenders. ;)

This diesel is a very appropriate powertrain for the Range Rover. When you consider how people actually drive them, a torquey diesel is a great match. Add to that the substantial increase in fuel mileage and subsequent increase in range and you have a compelling argument for it. At only $1,500 one really has to wonder why most buyers wouldn't go that route.
@THUNDERA57

The hood vents aren't fake. They provide a secondary path for intake air if the fender well intake ports become submerged. This allows for class leading fjording depths up to just below the headlights. The vents supply air through the hood and into the upper part of the airbox via a channel just below the hood vent that runs forward to the airbox on each side. Alot of people think Range Rovers are just expensive because of the name, but a lot of engineering goes into these purpose built vehicles. There aren't many off road capable vehicles (that have locking center and rear differentials with air suspension and good approach/departure angles) that are available with over 500 HP and handles like a sport sedan on-road while still looking good enough to turn heads in the city. I have 3 sets of wheels for mine, 20" with off-road rubber, 21" with snow tires, and 22" with summer rubber and I use them all throughout the year. That's all you need to transform this SUV into a vehicle that can literally do it all.
@jamiermathlin

The hood vents are not fake, they are the air intake for the engine, they work with a duct system to the side vents to Stop water getting into the engine.

Yeah, at 2:22 in the video ; notice how the rear bumper is a slightly different shade than the rest of the paint job? My gasoline powered 2006 Toyota Corolla makes more of a diesel 'clatter' than that Range Rover does. It always did, even when it was new.

Pretty lame cheap shot at VW... TFL responded when they did their immediate video on the VW scandal, saying that it was newsworthy, and they even made a video to try and prove how awful the fix will be. BOTH WERE WRONG! The fix they came out public with stated that it wouldn't lose hp or trq. and that the 3L V6 TDI's only had a small bit of the code, but no actual cheat device. TFL did not report this in any way, further perpetuating this mentality that people only need to report on the sexy news, but corrections or solutions aren't interesting, even if it saves face for the subject. So sad. THERE ISN'T EVEN A STOP SALE ON TDI ANYMORE!! I just bought an A7 TDI last week! This Range Rover absolutely will compete with the Cayenne Diesel and the Diesel X5, but not the Q7, because the market for luxury sports suv/crossovers splits by rows of seats. The Q7 is all on its own. To say that this in any way compares to a Jeep is only based on guts, not reality of purchaser. No one who is in the market for a Range Rover would be caught dead inside a Jeep dealership... The Touareg TDI and the Jeep match in price and innards, minus that the Touareg doesn't have the air suspension that it came with until 2010. (Although it will be back in 2017). I like TFL, you guys have a lot of good insight, but please stop feeding the hysteria with your hyperbole and obvious bias. Thanks!
@TFLcar
@TFLcar 8 лет назад
+Nick Wright Thanks Nick but you can't argue with a fanboy. What VW did was cheat and deceive both the government and their buyers. They admitted it, and apologized, but the fact remains that they set diesel sales back in the United States for years. It is completely fair game to point this out when the first new diesel is introduced in the U.S.A. since the scandal. In fact it would be unprofessional of Roman to not acknowledge the diesel elephant in the room.
@jatreat
@jatreat 8 лет назад
+The Fast Lane Car They did admit to cheating in the 2L engines, no argument there. But they also released a fix for that (which you never reported on). The 3L engines they never admitted to cheating with. EPA found traces of the 2L software in the 3L, but not in any way that would function, (Also something you never reported on). They also significantly decreased the number that they believe to be effected to below 40k! So yes there was a scandal which you guys blew out of proportion, because you reported it before all the facts had been released. Now that the facts are here, you guys are silent except to poke at their expense. Also you say that the fact remains that they set diesel sales back in the US for years, but even during this entire news story, Mercedes, BMW, FCA, etc. did not report any significant or noticeable drop in diesel sales....so...
@TFLcar

+The Fast Lane Car I agree that it is necessary to mention the Diesel scandal when a new Diesel car is released. What I actually would like to see is a report on the different emissions standards in EU and US (esp. California). Because it is rather astonishing that they US laws seem soo much stricter for NOx emissions than the EU standards, while the EU standards are (afaik) stricter on CO2. And since gas engines don't have any propblem with NOx emissions, but on the other hand produce more CO2 than Dieselsdo (due to their higher avg consumption), it seems that the US emissions are made in such a way that they provide a trade barrier for European Diesel cars to protect US carmakers. OR... The EU standards are designed in such a way that the Europeans are pushed to buying more Diesel (better fuel economy, lower CO2), which is a type of engine in which the EU carmakers are way ahead of the US. Either way, I find it strange that the emissions standards seem to be designed with actual economic goals in mind, which I find rather hypocritical, given that they are supposed to be protecting the environment... And at the same time ships are burning the dirtiest of fuels (fuel oil) and causing NOx and fine dust emissions to a huge extent and the public does not seems to care.

+ The Fast Lane Car It's a Peugeot HDI that's been available in Europe and other parts of the World for 10+ years. USA does not get the 3.5 liter version yet. Ford's involvement is going-in half on building the Plant in the UK. Ford is still debating whether to offer it on the F-150. Peugeot is/are the best Light-Duty Diesels built on the Globe.

The problem with the Jeep Grand Cherokee is that it's track record for reliability has been pretty bad, in fact the Jeep line-up in general seems to follow this norm. The stats are still out on the Range Rover so that may be a non issue and one has to consider maintenance cost, insurance etc, but if you have the money to buy a Range Rover, why would you even consider a vehicle that may be spending more time in your local mechanics garage rather in your own garage?

1500 for the diesel option? Well worth it. Isn't Jeep's diesel around a 3k option? Besides it's a Range Rover, their clients have deep pockets, so 1500 is tip money for a month. LOL.

The 2017 RRS has a 306bhp V6 diesel with 516ft/lb of torque and a 20% improvement in fuel economy, in the UK I can get 50mpg if I am careful, generally average 42mpg.

I have one - so far so good, love it (Knock on wood ZERO Issues). My mixed driving MPG is 26MPG and all highway MPG average is 31.5 cruising @ 70MPH. The 0-60 time is a little better than 7.1sec as stated- if you use the sport shift. The normal Drive setting was used in review, which 2nd gear used to start. Once in you're in sport mode once shift up drops you into first.

A number of years ago Popular Mechanics did their own pollution comparison between a VW Jetta and a Toyota Prius. The Prius did NOT win. Having owned a Jetta diesel and actually achieved 50mpg PLUS on the highway.....it's like everything else......a few uninformed but very LOUD MOUTH people with a platform bash diesels so the heard of people (too lazy to do their own research) just fall for the line that's being pitched. When you can have a comfortable nice vehicle with a range of 600-800 miles OR MORE....that's an option gas and electric simply can't offer. Unless Jeeps have changed a LOT.....I don't believe comfort wise a Jeep is anywhere close to Range Rover/BMW/Audi and a few others when it comes to comfort.

Diesel has been proven all over the world as being more efficient than gasoline. I don't believe the scandal involving VW affects sales of diesel vehicles overall. It is good to note that Range Rover is only asking a premium of $1,500 for a diesel, unlike every other manufacturers here in the U.S. asking for more than $4,000 for a diesel engine option.

I agree on this review for some parts. But they are not justifying things with what those cars come out with.Suspension of RRS is a different level with Grand Cherokee, it's the same suspension system that they use it in Mercedes S Class. Materials, finishes are different.... Comparing those two vehicles by just the short moment of feel of driving.... Don't think it's a professional way to justify things. Grand Cherokee, Range Rover, Porsche... They are all great cars, but STOP justifying things with just the price tag without any details.... Too much patriot shyt going on in this team.

+scterka Let me put it to you this way.... Ford used to own Jaguar/Land Rover and made some great improvements on it's overall reliability. In regards to your "fancy Ford Explorer" comment, if you lift the hood of most Range Rovers these days you will still find a few parts with the "FOMOCO" name on them which is short for Ford Motor Company. TATA may still own them but Ford still has a great relationship with them as a parts supplier. And yes I agree, the Ford Explorer looks like a Range Rover without the power or the Air lift suspension. ;)

What'swrong witha little diesel clatter? We all love engine sounds when you accelerate hard, new diesels make much nicer sound at accelerating than gasoline engines. The thing we get with diesels is torque, better fuel economy and a lot better engine flexibility which you actually need in every day driving. I've actually owned and loved the small Renault Twingo II with 1.5L diesel (appx. 60mpg), it was a totally different car from the gasoline one. Now I drive a bigger diesel (around 40mpg)...

You're basically paying for the name and that Range Rovers are hand build, which costs more to do. Even UK Top Gear agrees that a car being hand build doesn't make for good quality. I remember watching an episode of American Top Gear where they had the Ranger Rover Sport and when it rained they learned that the moon roof leaked and after just a couple days the air bag suspension stopped working.
@MrPeterthepilot
@MrPeterthepilot 8 лет назад
Actually Seraphim, they aren't hand built - I've been to the factory and seen the robots at work. So these days the quality is terrific and the reliability fine. We've had 3 in the family after owning BMWs and Toyotas and the build quality is at least as good.

+Seraphim Valkyrin The guys on Top Gear are notorious bashers of Ranger Rover, but... even they've all agreed that they are the best 4x4s around. Their reliability was shoddy. It's average these days. Every manufacturer's reliability is about the same these days. I will tell you this though... in the US, the resale value of RR Sports is through the roof! Driving one is quite the experience.
@pabloottawa
@pabloottawa 8 лет назад
+Seraphim Valkyrin I remember the Top Gear Episode where they took a Range Rover, Land Cruiser and Suzuki Samurai through the jungles of South America... Jeremy was commenting on the old days of Land Rover which was shortly after the war when they started making cars... The Chief engineers and technicians designing Land Rovers had the mentality of "that's good enough", "that will do". And you're right they were hand built because they could not afford to dump millions into manufacturing an automated system or even an assembly line type of production line. So yes, this led to boosting the image of the "Hand Built car" to maintain sales. Once the Japanese flexed their muscles and developed robotic assembly lines, they were able to not just make better cars than the British and the North Americans, but also sold their robots and robot technology (same with the Germans). These days Land rover no longer makes ANY of their cars by hand and technically even "hand built engines" are not made by hand... The blocks are all milled and drilled by computer controlled robots and the only hands on part of it is where the engine components are added onto it. Even this stage is meticulously controlled and monitored. These days, it's a bit misleading to say that any car or engine is hand built. Maybe the engine is hand assembled but that's about it. Ironically enough it's not Land Rover's core components that fail (engine, transmission). it's the bells, whistles and fancy air suspension that fails. These things are so electronically complex that it only takes one thing to short circuit or fail and then it's a domino effect.... Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. This isn't exclusive to Land rover either..... Many car companies are suffering the same issues

+John Smith it's not just the price. The reliability of the vehicle is really bad. Parts have to be imported to the US. I have seen other Range Rovers off-road. There is nothing special with the Range Rover when off-road. A Toyota 4runner or Jeep JK Wrangler can easily go just as many places off-road at half the cost.
@JohnSmith-pd1fz
@JohnSmith-pd1fz 8 лет назад
wcjeep Of course parts have to be imported into the us - it's an imported vehicle!! Or are you under the illusion that it is made somewhere in the us? As for a jeep - I have just returned a jeep wrangler to the dealer I bought it off, broken down for the fourth time with 7414 miles on the clock from new. In two months I have lost about eight grand - in Pounds Sterling on that vehicle. Yes Toyotas are reliable. Until they go wrong. How much for an exchange Hilux gearbox do you think? For a two year old vehicle, more than the vehicle was worth. Quite honestly I wonder why Jaguar/Land Rover bother selling cars to the us at all when the only feedback they get focusses on reliability issues. If the vehicle was that bad the company would have gone bust years ago. Instead the factories in the West Midlands, England, UK are being extended, expanded and rebuilt.

Why compare it with a Jeep ?:) LOL Compare it with a Duster better ..cause is way cheaper and good capability in off road. A Range is about the brand , the image , the lifestyle , the safety , the confidence , the feeling of being more . The active safety systems on the car , the smart "terrain response" program which has more electronics and mechanics than a factory. You tested the TDV6 which is the lower option with less hp and torque , with no brembo brakes , with no adaptive dynamics , with no torque vectoring, no active stabilisers . The car has lot more to offer than you can imagine. The Jeep feels like a jeep on the road , even if is same capable as a rangie off road- the center of gravity is higher. Also take note that the range sport has a full body aluminium chasis which is normal to be more expensive than regular body on steel frame. Also the 4x4 Systems on cars are so much different. Range I think they use Haldex Gen 4 with 2 electronically locking differentials (which can be 25/50/75% or 100% locked) which are adaptive (linked to some sensors of the car) I havent seen this type of "LSD" in manny cars and I saw some in my life. Even the drivetrain of the range is so much smarter. Anyway lot more electronics so probably lot more stuff to go wrong after the warranty ..But the engineering level is probably same as from a Tesla car.

Two comments: highway driving gives me 6.5 liters per 100 km (over 40 mpg) in my Australian SDV6 so why is he only getting 28 (or is that actually combined?). Second: take his point about the Grand Cherokee. My mate has one but on trips, he wants to take my RRS and to be honest I'm not so bothered about taking his GC!

But the Grand Cherokee failed the Moose test and got a 'Marginal' on the overlap test. So...no thanks. Besides, it's been proven that the RR isn't taken off road until the 3rd owner. It's a luxo cruiser, until it's out of warranty. The Jeep is a deathtrap.

lol John, I get your point, did you know Rolls Royce "never break down either! For 50 years they've told customers to just pull over and await recovery - which incidentally was under cover while transported. Im sure LR don't go to those measures. I was merely speaking from experience of myself and 2 colleagues over the last 5 years. I'm sure on average there maybe little difference. TBH I'd rather push a LR or a Jeep than drive a KIA or Hyundai or Dacia for that matter! That's my own take on it anyway!
