Good video..Just a great tip to offer..Do not use a torque wrench for the oil filter housing..There is a steel clip that clicks when you install the housing on the fixture...There are torque specs from the factory on everything..You might break something that gets serviced every 5000 miles..Just like the oil drain plug..Just snug it tight with a new washer..Keep it Simple Stud....

Hello, thank u for your great tutorials! I just replaced my old battery for my Corolla 2016 by myself with the help of your video. Now I’m studying how to do oil change. The oil filter replacement I bought from Toyota dealership shop looks different, it looks like it already come with a housing and filter together… what is the difference?
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 2 года назад
Hello, theres 2 different style filters one like the one in the video where its a cartridge inside a plastic housing that u can replace only the cartridge paper element by itself..and then theres a spin on oil filter that comes with the element inside all in one piece..i think ur referring to this spin on type oil filter..but youll wanna verify before starting ur oil change which type u have..because if they sold u the wrong type youll need to exchange it before or if it is a spin on filter the process will be slightly different..but it is quicker

@@backyardchevy328 thanks for responding so quickly. I think my Corolla 2016 takes the screw-on filter type (where the filter is already inside housing)… I purchased it after dealership worker checked my vehicle reg #. @@stevensevek6151 The point of my comment was to make sure you know which filter you need to buy before you drain your oil. My Toyota had the original filter rig replaced with a canister filter. So I continue to buy the canisters. To go back to original equipment I would have to buy the whole rigamarole that holds the old filters in place. I’ve always been scared of oil changes because of how easy it is to screw things up but your video makes everything really straightforward. The jiffy lube down the street wanted to charge $100 for the oil change ….my god. It used to be like 60-75 (which is still a lot). I really need to buy the rest of the tools i need like the shop towels, the tool to remove the oil filter, and a pan to catch the oil. Just wish i had a great jack like the one you have. For now im just gonna have to settle for the crappy spare tire jack

Very useful video :) I have a small problem, if you can help me I would appreciate: I have an Corolla from 2017, 1.6, valemantic, 132hp, 45.300 km on ODO. I bought this car second hand, from Germany. Recently I've made oil change - 5w-30 they put me. They said that this is the correct oil viscosity for car age and km on ODO I've seen that the owner manual preferred is 0w-20. I can used 5w-30, but after that to switch back to 0w-20. I'm living in Romania. Temepratures during the winter can go to -10 Celsius, to +35 Celsius in the summer Theoretically, they put correct oil for these conditions, but owner manual is recommending something else. Questions and concerns: They put the correct oil after all giving weather conditions? If I have right now 5w-30 it will affect my car? Should I switch back to the 0w-20 at the next oil change?
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 2 года назад
Well 0w-20 is thinner oil in colder weather..and in below freezing weather u want thinner oil so it can circulate better when u first start ur car..while a 5w-30 is slightly thicker in cold weather and better hotter weather performance than the 0w-20 the oil ranges for ur temperature both oil's can be used safely..and yes u can change back to 0w-20 if u prefer...i would also rather prefer to stay with the original 0w-20

0w20 is not needed that is the factory fill a 5w30 C2 spec will do just fine especially in warmer climates where shearing will be less, 0w20 is alright with 6 months intervals. 0w20 tends to foam here in Australia.

I'm completely car illiterate but want to start by at least doing my own oil changes. Can you please tell me the tool(s?) used to do this? The thing to loosen and then to screw back on with toque is just a regular wrench or? Thank you
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 4 года назад
Definitely..i used a 3/8ths drive ratchet to loosen the bolt(the longer the ratchet the more leverage to loosen the bolt)...and it can tighten the bolt but to be accurate with the torque spec..youll wanna use a torque wrench u can get that in 3/8ths drive as well..if u have a local harbor freight..u can get all this there at a pretty good price with coupons..and u can either get a 3/8ths drive socket set to go with the ratchet, youll wanna get that 6 point 3/8ths drive also...and that filter wrench will work with the 3/8ths drive also so you should be good with those

I don't know where you got your torque specs from but if you look at the top of your oil filter assembly cap (opposite the treaded end) it says right on the part "Tighten To 25 N•m". 25 Newton meters is equal to 18 ft.lbs.
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 4 года назад
It came with the oil filter, yes, i know the housing had the torque spec, but could of been a revised torque spec so i decided to go with the torque spec that came with the filter.
@stevensevek6151
@stevensevek6151 4 года назад
@@backyardchevy328 Didn't you use an STP oil filter? Why would you trust STP to give you the torque specs for a Toyota oil filter cap? That makes zero sense. That's something that maybe STP mistakenly printed on the box because they print it on all the packaging for all their spin on filters? Still 22 ft.lbs. I'm sure is fine. It's not enough to cause a problem. I commend you for using a torque wrench and making a great instructional video. Also IF you read the instructions that come with Toyota OEM filters, they say not to use a pick or screwdriver to remove the o-ring. Just so you know. I don't see a problem using a pick or small screwdriver but since you are instructing others maybe you should just mention that Toyota discourages that practice.
@backyardchevy328
@backyardchevy328 4 года назад
@@stevensevek6151 it was a paper that came with the o ring and yes it was stp..its like when u do a timing belt on a toyota camry..the timing belt set comes with revised instructions for the original spring to replace it with a newer spring, sometimes u get revisions..and since 22ft lbs isnt that much tighter than 18ft lbs..it wont affect it...im sure if i torque it to 18ft lbs and set it to 22ft lbs after i probably wont even get any movement from it.

If you really have to use a higher weight, then make sure it is synthetic. 0W20 only comes as a synthetic. Synthetic is far better for higher heat resistance, and better flow, which is necessary for a modern engine.
