I have it's little brother, (2012 street triple)! I feel in love with the style of the Triples! After 3 years of ownership and your review.. I think I want that upgrade to the Speed! :) I knew eventually I would want to get a bigger bike. This review just solidified that want!
Great review, I had the previous model for a year and loved it. My only gripe would be why haven't Triumph moved the exhausts down to the same position as the Street Triple.......loads of owners are going to have to shell out extra for a low boy exhaust.
I like it. Love your reviews. I think it's a great looking bike. Am I going to buy one? No... I'm 63 and I like to tour with a passenger, so I'll stick with my last-forever '97 Super Black bird
These bikes are such a well balanced package, the best fueling of any bike i've ever ridden and i've owned three over the years. What they don't tell you is that triumph sells a kit to retro fit the round headlights to the new models. Yes Aprilia Tuono and Super Duke make more power but they aren't bullet proof reliable as these bikes are...they are anvils.
really good review as usual! i test ride the 2016 speed triple R yesterday, one thing i want to ask , may be it was the demo bike but i though the throttle was very snatchy in the traffic. gears, clutch and all the other expects of the bike was just right. +Bike World Did you get funny on and off Throttle respond? In the review it says perfect fuelling. My current bike is 2015 Ducati Multistrada 1200S and i only get snatchy throttle on sports mode. ThankS!

I own 2012 R, the one with PVM forged wheels, and i love it. But really the 1050 triumph needs a redesign, that engine could weight 15kg less and put out 15-20hp more if designed today.
Great review Luke; did you notice any difference with the weight vs. older speed triples? Have they lost any weight elsewhere? My main grudge with riding one was that they didn't feel so nimble compared to it's rivals...
Let me asked you, which in your opinion would you want, Ducati monster R or the speed triple R ? Oh 1 other question lol will the monster R do a clutch less wheelie in 3rd?
I went to check one of these out in person today. I love the looks of it. Reminds me of my 07 FZ1 just better looking lol. I currently ride a 14 S1000rr but want another naked and this is on top of my list. Matte gray will do me just fine lol. Maybe sometime next year after the 2017 models come out. That way, they'll practically pay you to take the 2016s off the showroom floor lol.
So I went to test ride one about a week ago, not sure if this thing had a power limit since it new (like S1000rr) but it felt blah. Brakes made me scared as well. Maybe because it was new. Not sure of any of these will change after a break-in but first riding impression left me unimpressed. Still love the looks and still under consideration. Next up FZ10.
kenny harp Ha ha ha We are looking/considering at the exact same bikes. FZ 10 is nice except for the very small tank range for about 110 miles. So far you like the S1000R the best? Maybe we should go for the 2016 model in spring they will drop in price. Good luck and please keep me posted. Thank you
E.S. Slc haha yep. See I've had an 07 FZ1 which I purchased new in 2010 and traded in 2013 with 42K trouble free miles. I therefore have no issues trusting another Yamaha. The snatchy throttle issue that everyone complains I didn't have in my 07 so I can't speak on that. I don't have the Single R, I have the RR Supersport and honestly I didn't even look at the single R because it's essentially the same bike, I want something totally different hence why the naked BMW is not under consideration. Will keep you posted as I test the FZ10 lol.
+Jay C if they could do a front end like the duke R i would agree but the nose is just too looney for me . all the refinement and that disgusting headlight is hanging off the front like wtf. just my 2 cents
Finally some power numbers! Bit disappointed they didn't get to at least 150 bhp. What was the official torque number? Biggest mistake was no quick shifter, not even simple up shifting. Given its ride by wire, what stopped them devolving an auto blipper function for down shifts? Would I trade up my '08 Speed and go for a new model, probably not.
+Christian Thiele I still prefer my Street Triple R. More than enough power for real life situation and more nimble. The Speed is too heavy, compared to the Street Triple, I mean.
The day they changed the round headlights they really killed the design. i would say take them back, put the exausts down on both sides and bring some more colours and maybe it will take some of the legend back
Really hope this isn't much better than my 2011 speedy as I can't afford one ATM! Don't like the fact that the front lights have gone Japanese but it does look good.
Shame. Was always a dream bike for me when I moved up to a full A license. Used to spend a lot of time procrastinating uni work on the Triumph configurator...
I want one, but i don't know if i could handle that front end. It's as hideous as ever. Those headlights just don't look good. But it's a great bike. Perfect example of function over form here.
zombies4sale bikes are way behind cars with lighting, ive just gone for this 2016 model as for the first time the day time running lights are different to simply dip beam. I have a habit of fitting HIDs to my bikes but hopefully the lights on this 2016 model will be adequate
That's a lovely review mate. Thankfully it wasn't as Hollywood/Bollywood styled and it was the most to-the-point review I have ever seen. Sadly, I can't afford it the Speed Triple or rather anything that's even a world famous 250/300 because of horrible pricing here in India. Rode Street Triple with full Arrows system an year or so ago and loved it. I am quite sure Speed would have been awesome!! :)
+Zone Television Really? 138 hp is not enough? This bike has a superb powerband for street riding and it is not a full-on sport bike with low bars and a fairing although it is so good it is very capable on a racetrack. I can't use the full capabilities of my modified 100hp 675 STR on public roads without getting killed or in jail. Motorcycles with 150+ hp are getting ridiculous for public roads and are more scary than fun. Get real; that little rear tire contact patch now needs extensive electronics to prevent disaster. The hp wars are now rendered pointless and motorcycles that are good-looking, fun, capable, and comfortable are the ones that will sell in volume eg the new Triumph Bonneville line. The old Speed Triple would rip through the quarter mile in the 10 sec bracket; is a half second faster going to make any difference on the street?
+gwwayner understood but it's still outclassed but the Tuono and Superduke neither of those are sports bikes (per se) but to relevant and competitive it really deserves at least 25 more bhp I own a street triple and it has more than enough power for the street in the real world dudes are always asking for a bit more
+Fuel to Blaze No. one reason is because at junctions cars where pulling out on motorcyclists with both headlights on thinking it was a car in the distance, when in fact it was a bike not very far away. with having one light on its more likely for road users to recognise it as a bike approaching and not a distant car.
this thing is 2k euros more expensive in Greece than in UK and 2.5k for the R model. Germany has the same prices as the UK. European union my ass.. if STR is expensive bike for an english man imagine for a Greek at +2.5k..
still the same power , come on triumph I was expecting more , I've had a go last weekend after testing 1000r and new gsx-s 1000 . Its as good as bmw only missing power . Its a waste opportunity for triumph , not to make engine bigger ( ktm )
