What ever happened to station wagons? What once seemed like the ultimate blend of form and function in the 1960s has evolved into a completely niche vehicle segment. As history goes, wagons gave way to minivans in the 1980s, minivans to SUVs in the 1990s, and SUVs to crossovers in the 2000s. But crossovers are more image than substance. Sure, they ride high off the ground, but they don’t offer the same cargo space and storage solutions as wagons. Amidst this crossover craze, the wagon should be given its due.
If the wagon were to make a comeback, no better blend of practicality, cargo space, and road-going manners exists on the market today than the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen.
The 2016 Golf SportWagen is based on the seventh-generation Golf and is the follow-up to the Jetta SportWagen. It offers impressive storage space and all the fun-to-drive nature of the Golf, along with the latest infotainment and safety technologies. It offers a surprisingly lot of car for the money. Got the Limited Edition 6 months ago and couldn't be more satisfied. Solid, smooth and quiet. A correction to your comments: the Limited Edition also includes the panoramic sunroof (wow!) , a driver's assist package and 17" wheels. All for 26K msrp.

Tell that to VWoA, which, in its finite wisdom, has killed off the Sportwagen for 2020.

The comeback just got aborted -- no more Sportwagen in 2020. I just grabbed a used 2016 -- great car.

It would be nice if other automakers could offer wagon versions of their cars they sell in other countries in the USA like the Masda6, Focus, Fusion, Subaru Levorg, Optima and Sonata.

Wagons are such a niche market that there's no point in certifying them for North America, even though cars like the Focus wagon could easily be sold here.

Where can I find the fog lights? I just have a Sportwagen 2016 without this lights, and don't wanna make mistakes getting it by myself in a wrong site. Appreciate your suggestions

I’m sure I’ve seen a couple of these in my street, thinking it was a golf but looked twice as it was slightly longer than a Golf. It’s more like a larger Hatch than wagon, I like it as I want bigger than Golf but not as big as a sedan.

I just bought this car on Monday to replace my passat. Wow this car is great! Adaptive cruise works all the way to 1 mph and stops and tells you to hold the break but you have to hit the resume button to start again.

I bought my 2016 to replace my 1996 Audi A4 Quattro, which had finally died from an electrical system meltdown. I am keeping the 2001 Passat wagon. :)

My wishlist is a stretched beetle squareback. That would really fulfill my child memory. My dads 1973 yellow squareback with shiny VW chrome hub caps are still on my my mind with great memories.

looking at a 2017 SE trim Sportwagen to replace my 2014 Jetta Sportwagen diesel. Going to hate giving up the diesel and manual transmission, but looks like I should be pretty happy overall with the updates found in the 2017 without feeling totally out of place!

Decent review. Why compare this to a Kia Soul and Honda Fit? They are totally in a smaller category than the Golf Sport Wagen.

I love the wagon, just got a sportwagen. However, what people miss about the appeal of the crossover or compact suv is the ride height. People like being up higher for better visibility. The sportiness of driving is not a mainstream want, people want pure comfort.

Really like those. Thinking of getting one. But why there is no AWD option?????

It's been stated that there will be a SportWagen S AWD, and two trim levels of AWD AllTrack. That's already in press releases...

I would buy a mazda6 wagon or subaru levorg as my next car if they were available in the US. The TDI version had been on my list, but the recent scandal tanked that idea. The mazda3 is more or less a wagon (some argue it's a hatchback), but I'm looking for something slightly longer to fit a surfboard or bike more easily.

Mazda 6 is a good wagon. I share your frustration that we can't buy most wagons in the U.S.

George... How tall are you? Just would help to clarify the actual perspective of vehicle space. My guess is you are 6' 5" or 6' 6", you look a bit tight in that back seat and my guess is this would not be the case for most.

runforit420 the asain 6 speed should have no problems and as the e888 gen3 goes vw has worked out all the issues from past engines

runforit420 yeah the early build dates of the 2.0 we're prone to turbo failure but those were the is20 turbos not the is12 that we have

is this a reliable car for long term?
@spencerc4338
@spencerc4338 6 лет назад
Yes sir, this vehicle is very reliable. Of course you have to realize that Volkswagen is German, and not a Japanese car company, but anyone who claims that a Volkswagen is a piece of crap, don't listen to them. Just remember, Volkswagen is the parent company of Porsche, so obviously VW's are designed with quality in mind, because we all know that Porsche is an extremely reliable and wonderful vehicle, no questions asked! Anyone who tells you not to ever buy a Volkswagen is a very misinformed person! If you maintain them properly they will definitely last long term. If you're considering buying the VW Sportwagen, I would get it, because they are great reliable vehicles and the interior style as well as quality is like a $100,000 luxury vehicle!

Fast forward to 2019, and VW has killed the Golf Sportwagen. I am hoarding wagons -- 2001 Passat wagon, bought new, and 2016 Golf Sportwagen bought last year.
