@@kaneetsate1662 I don’t regret the decision. I think if you are someone who likes to go fast I’d probably recommend something with a little more power. Top speed on the R3 is only going to be about 110mph. I found the R3 to be rather impressive for its size though. I’m a big dude and i had no issues on the interstate.

After much debate and contemplation rather to start with a 600cc bike as a first bike vs starting on a yamaha r3, I decided to start with the yamaha r3 to gain experience for the first year than moving up to a 600cc.

Your first R3 ride was one of the major selling points for me and what lead me to buy an R3. This new video is just as excellent. It's the first time I've seen the OEM tank pad installed, and it looks good. The brakes can easily be upgraded with better pads and some new lines. I still feel the R3 is the best bike to get into sport bike riding especially for new riders.

I've had my r3 for 7 months now, I have learned ALOT from this bike. Am purchasing my r6 in a few weeks. So glad I started out with this bike. And you are right chase, it is the most fun riding it like a race bike in town without breaking "to many" laws...haha I wouldn't change my first bike experience for anything else. Everything you said in this video is 100% accurate. Great video brother. Keep up the good work!

I got a 2015 R3 back in May. Brakes had adequate stopping power but not much feedback and you had to apply a fair bit of pressure. Upgraded to a stainless steel brake line up front and problem solved.

19:27 for beginners advice. I had a Ninja 300 for a year before moving on. Like Chase said, the 300 series bikes are great if you have absolutely no riding experience. I feel a lot of riders forget that first month of riding and how overwhelming it can be. Riding is a full body experience unlike any other. Practice is needed to coordinate your body in controlling the bike and the last thing you need is a twitchy throttle and lots of power. If you rode dirt bikes and are moving to the street, don't bother with a 300.

A fair analysis of the Yamaha YZF-R3. I have been riding for 40 years. I bought a 2015 R3 as my 9th motorcycle, specifically for commuting to and from work. I liked the FZ7, but my main criteria for choosing the R3 was the low cost of fuel and insurance (about 50% cheaper). I wanted a bike that I could ride 12 months of the year in all weather (Vancouver is very wet) and it would be stored outside. The R3 turned out to be a very good choice, it does everything I need, its nimble handling is very useful when commuting in rush hour traffic and it's also just fast enough to be entertaining on weekends. It would be nice to have another 10bhp, but my only real complaint is the brakes: I need to use for fingers full force when braking from moderate speeds. The rear brake doesn't worry as much as I primarily use the front. Update: I replaced my R3 with an MT-07 in 2018, but I bought another R3 for my daughter when she turned 16, so we still have on in the house and I still enjoy taking it out for a spin.

I think the brakes being squishy is not necessarily a bad thing, if i's your first time on a motorcycle. You probably do want to upgrade them at some point if you wanna keep the bike for a longer time, but when you first get on it and learn everyday riding, it is probably nice to have brakes that don't accidently throw you forward by accident when city riding. That could cause a new rider to lose control or even crash. But it probably also depends on the person riding :) good stuff Chase!

I could be wrong but i think to qualify as a great beginner bike, brakes should be one of the more important things. I learned to ride on a 650R kawi, and the brakes weren't great, and that led to a few close calls. That being said learning to ride a bike with crap brakes will make you appreciate good brakes when you get your next bike.

Your feedback with bikes are very good. I bought my first bike in September 2016, and I have to tell you. It was a pain in the ass to watch people expecting to every single bike being just like the 1000cc like R1, CBR1000, etc. You explain very well for each category, and the reality of each one. Even though I went for the ninja 300 and it is clear on another video the R3 is your favorite, what made me decide for the ninja instead of R3 is the thing you and everybody else said, Brakes. Thanks for the channel.

I have my R3 set up with a touring windscreen, bags, 150/60 rear tire, pipe, new pegs, shorty levers, z-rated radials, etc. I returned from a 340 mile day trip the previous week and I found a weakness. After awhile the seat goes away, so a new Saddleman gel seat was installed. It is so comfy, and it adds 1/2 inch of height. Here is where my bike is different than some, because the brakes will stand you on your head. I can only assume some pads are different or maybe mine have been worn in to give a better bite. Ride safe!

I put a Double Bubble windscreen on my R3 and was really impressed with how the air flowed over me on the highway, it made the bike much nicer from 65-85 MPH. I've really enjoyed my R3, and I've had much larger bikes. However, I do find myself thinking about getting something in the 6XX range. There's just no replacement for the power in the 600 and liter bikes.

Its a purpose built motorbike derived from the Moto3 class of MotoGP... I agree its body kit is made of plastic (fibreglass), it has huge single cylinder engine so it gives good amount of vibrations... but that's the thing.. it aimed as a purpose built light weight track/road bike so as to attain good power to weight ratio... To achieve track bike like light weight character, body kit has to be made of expensive carbon fibre body.. but no body would spend money on expensive parts.. so to make it cheap and light weight its made of fibreglass... which is not bad in itself but it doesn't feel premium either... So if you fall and break stuff, it wouldn't cost you as much as the parts of lets say ninja 300 or R3... sometimes you have to sacrifice on comfort for light weight, better handling and good power to weight ratio... For Eg. like a Mustang or a Camaro in their class they are cheap.. their interiors are made of cheap plastic and doesn't feel premium at all,,, but no one cares.. its made for torque, power and noise... See what I m trying to say here... But I m not arguing or anything just making a point
@allesklarklaus147
@allesklarklaus147 7 лет назад
fibreglass stuff is not really worse than usual carbon fibre. Good fibre glass (S-Glass) is stronger (even per weight) than average lowrange carbon fibre like eg roadcars use. carbon fibre is more stiff but that doesn't matter much in this situation. Unless you can get your hands on Formula 1 style carbon fibre (which none of us here can lol) that fibreglass is a very good and cheaper alternative.

+k34 smk I live in Europe so everything's expensive here compared to the US etc.. You'll save money by picking up a new 2015 leftover over a new 2016 model. But if you're buying used, it's all about the condition of the bike, warranty and resell value. Get a mechanic or biker friend to check the bike for flaws if it's your first bike. If the chain is covered in rust, its probably been sitting outside in the rain and not been taken good care of. There aren't really many other new 500s that I know of, but I've heard the yamaha fz-07 is a good deal because it's about the same price as the 500R and with a bunch more torque. If you don't need all that power, the r3 and the fz/mt 03 is just a few horses short of the cbr500r.

I rode my friend's Ninja 300, before he wrecked it, and Kawasaki's dualsport 300 at a demo with the same motor, and the R3 feels faster. Accelerating the R3 just feels like it gets going a bit quicker. The Ninja is a nice bike tho, and felt like the engine was better balanced to me. They're very close in comparison.

I found that after increasing the suspension setting on my ninja 300 it didn't buffet as much on the freeway. It's a preload adjustment and matching it with your riding style really increases the motorcycle's feel. I know you don't get to change it with the test rides so just letting you know.

So I'm turning 16 in June and getting my license, since I was born my dad rode a bike almost daily and I've decided that I want to get a bike and I'm really admiring the r3, I've sat on it and it feels really nice compared to a ninja 300 and even a r6.

Have a 2015 R3 I purchased new last year when I was commuting 110 miles a day. Was fairly nice and comfortable, and fantastic mileage. The brakes definitely are weak and mushy, and the tires have zero feel to them. Not worth spending the money to upgrade them though as I imagine a good set of radials would just expose other shortcomings. Never was a big fan of riding it on the highway, but it did alright. Going to sell it in the spring as I recently picked up an 08 Daytona 675.

Ok i know this video is old but I got a question, it seems like there are 2 types of r3's, is there a difference other than the speedometer and body style? And does it matter what body style you get? Call me stupid for asking this but I'm only 15 I don't know much about motorcycles and want to start riding bikes next summer. I had my eyes on a couple different r3's and I'm just wondering what the reason is for the different bodys. Thanks.

Glad to stumble upon this video! No experience riding two wheels save for road and mountain bikes and in the market for a motorized...cycle, motorcycle! And this video put me at ease in deciding upon an entry level motorcycle, mostly, since your describing the brakes or lack-there-of since this will be a commuter bike for me. I'll be spending most of my time on the highway, about 80 miles each day, and am looking to have a fun drive yet not overwhelm myself. Thanks for the input!

Yamaha is playing games with customers and it's cost has been dead and injured riders. By removing the ABS brake option for USA market but making it standard for rest od the world? Then not letting customers even order the $150 dollar cost apps ABS pump as an option. So most R3's are crashed after a few months. The financing is horrible the have the worst Nada book values cause of all the new rider crashes.
@SaintTimid
@SaintTimid 8 лет назад
I wish my bike had ABS but I'm fine without it, unless these brakes are super touchy and easy to lock.
@nominalvelocity
@nominalvelocity 8 лет назад
Most of the rest of the world has mandatory ABS by government edict, and it's not just Yamaha who make a habit of deleting ABS on US models. Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Polaris / Indian, Harley (i.e. most everyone) does it on their entry and mid level models. NADA has nothing to do with crashes. Insurance rates do though. I got a quote on an FZ-07, as a 10 year rider I was blown away. Must be A LOT of newbies looping them. It's cheaper to insure an FJR-1300 costing twice as much, and having about twice as much power! Yeah, ABS is nice and all, but not having it is not some kind of death sentence for new riders. Putting them on a bike which requires skill and discipline level over their heads kind of is, though. You want fewer new rider crashes and cheaper insurance? Realize that many riders either don't have an endorsement, or haven't taken a rider training course. Ask your lawmakers for better and mandatory driver and rider training.
@itsvash679
@itsvash679 8 лет назад
Yes so Yamaha saved a few dollars cutting major rider safety feature. If you want to make excuses and kiss corporate butt be my guest. Yamaha has forever lost me as a customer over the R3 ABS issue. I go back with Yamaha ownership to the early 80's. And yes crashes have made it the worst resell value of the starter bikes.

So Im looking to get an R3 and keeping it for a bit longer than the 6months. What kind of braking upgrade do you think I should go with? Track days arent really what Im looking for, but if the stock system is mushy as he says what would be ideal? Should I just try to engine brake more often instead?
@P1015532oni
@P1015532oni 6 лет назад
A Metiche Film Company sintered brake pads and steel braided brake lines. Trust me, done this. Great stuff. I've had mine for two years now. Still love it. Also, the brakes aren't really that terrible as chase said. They still do the job. But chase is just so used to bigger bikes with more powerful acceleration and braking that's why the 300cc class brakes feel super terrible to him. If this is your first bike, sintered brake pads (make sure you get the double-H variety) and braided brake lines (steel) are all you need to up the performance.

RC390! I've been looking at the RC390, the R3, and the Ninja 300 as my first bike. I'm really leaning towards the RC if I can afford it but there are very few used ones out there. I like the R3 more then the Ninja, but hearing about the bad brakes puts me off. That is one thing I wouldn't be cool with. Yeah you can upgrade them but I don't think you should have to upgrade a brand new bike just to get it to brake safely. If you were going to upgrade the brakes on the R3, what would you do? Would just getting new pads cut it? Or are you suggesting calipers/rotors/pads all together? Thanks for the videos

Bought a new Yamaha R3 in the summer. Had to ride it over the highway 20 miles to home in shitty windy condition, and it was my first bike too. So guess what happened I was thrown off everywhere by the wind, trying to get it in control. The other problem is the foot pegs. I'm not even that tall, only 5'11'', and I had scraped my left toe on the street twice now while cornering. The foot pegs are pretty low. And I don't know if I agree with you on the breaking. It seems pretty good to me, and I have been riding it for 4 months now.

I've got a '17 in Costa Rica the same color scheme and I love it. Now understand what's settin' back home in a friends nice, dry basement in N.C. is an '05 ZZR1200. "BUT" the R3 does everything I need it to do on the road down here. Whether it's doing the mountain road (and I'm talkin' serious twisties) from Domincal to Perez Zeledon or bombing up and down the Costanera Hwy. beside the Pacific, it's great! I regularly run 110kmh (70mph) and easily run 80mph without any strain at all. I have 1200 km on it right now and my next oil change (synthetic) will be at 2000 after the initial 550 km one. I haven't redlined her but I haven't babied her either:-) I subscribe to the MotoMan break in on new motorcycle engines. Thumbs up for my R3! Oh and did I mention, I'm a 64 year old man who has ridden for 45 years!

Thanks for the tips and proper review for my first bike. I'm a first rider and I'm in love with this bike. I do have a question: I rode the bike super hard the first two days out of PURE excitement and was wondering if I should change the oil before the recommended 600mi? I've been doing low revs afterwards and have 450mi so far.
@motor3volt523
@motor3volt523 8 лет назад
You nailed this review, Chase. The bike is fantastic-- except for the stock brakes and tires. When you lean this bike over hard, things can get choppy in the back and that is not a sensation you want to feel when you're going into a turn at 80+ mph. I can't tell if that's due to the crappy stock tires or how small the tires are, but it definitely kills some of the fun of this bike (considering how light and flickable it is). Also, on a windy day on the highway, you get tossed around like nobody's business. I've had to lean hard into the wind to keep the bike going straight. Couple that with the less than stellar brakes, and it's a little spooky. That being said, I love this bike. It's perfect around town, does good enough on the highway, and is a blast to ride in the twisties.

Its interesting you had problems with the brakes. I have a 2015 and it seems ok to me. I have locked up the rear on a couple occasions without meaning to. The front I guess is a little mushy but I've never had an issue stopping, and maybe for a beginner you might want it a little mushy so you dont freak out and lock the front up.
