A quick video showing you how to change the rear differential fluid, also known as the "AWD Oil" in the maintenance minder, on your 2017 up Honda CRV with all wheel drive. The required fluid is the Honda Dual Pump II fluid. I found the best price on eBay. You will need approximately 1.3 qts as well as a 18mm and 20mm crush washer to replace the ones that are removed. The only tools you will need are a 3/8" ratchet and possibly a breaker bar along with a jack and jack stands or some ramps.

Always remove fill plug first.. Cause if its seized ... Now you have drained all your fluid with no way of refilling

I agree 100 percent if you don’t you will get your Panties in a bunch, also you should do this with the vehicle level to get a proper level of oil.

Good simple video with all the necessary info, fluid amount, crush washer size, and torque values. Thanks for making this video and posting it. This is pretty much the same for any CRV, but it's nice to confirm Honda didn't make any changes for the 5th GEN CR-V. I'll be doing mine this weekend, ours is a 2017 with 30k miles. People need to remember, when you do maintenance and clear codes, the new codes will come up for the NEXT service interval. So after I changed the oil at the 20k mile interval, the next set of codes came up which showed, oil change, brake fluid, and rear differential. The computer didn't want me to change it at 20k, but at the NEXT interval which ended up being 30k (when the maintenance minder nag message came on the screen again). Thanks again for the video!

Great video, shows how easy it is to do. One suggestion would be to get a rubber tube (Home Depot) about 2-3 feet long and a funnel (Dollar Tree). I held the tube in the fill while my daughter poured the fluid in the funnel end. As others mentioned, can do without lifting the car or removing tires, so whole process can actually be done in 15 minutes.

Good video. Once concern, having the rear tires on ramps will cause the oil to show full early.

That's correct. The vehicle should be level when doing this or the CVT fluid change.

So, I have changed the AWD oil today since I had the AWD light on for a few weeks (Cr-V 2013), but no code to any service (50k), probably the oil was never changed therefore the Honda Garage changed it twice because it did overheat as a result of old oil. Also, the car was turning in corners in a funny way. So far the turning in corners is fine and the car has more power. The AWD light came on and then after I stopped and started the car again it did not. Basically, if the AWD light comes on it means the AWD oil is overheating/it is almost water. The way I see it the Diff oil has to be changed after 20k miles in a new car then after 30-40k or if u have the code to do so. This is what I learned in recent weeks.

Somebody else has probably already said this but probably should make sure you can get the fill plug out first. If you drain your oil out and can’t get the fill plug out to refill it, your are hosed.

Thanks, the only thing I noticed was my car was too high on my ramps. I was only able to get a quart in at first. I realized I needed to level the car. Then it took about 1 quart and 10 oz.

Same, i was able to fill only more than a quart, then I jacked up the front, (make it level) could fill little bit more then started overflowing. Question: when overflowing means full, right??

I believe the front driveshafts just come out of the transaxle/transmission like any other front wheel drive vehicle. The CVT transmission has a different fluid requirement and interval.

Hello, I have a CR-V awd 2013, and recently the AWD is showing up on the dashboard and in the last three short drives, I noticed when turning in slow corners it is different from before, it is stiff and weird (my car has just over 50k), does that mean I have to change the AWD oil and fix the issue?! Thanks in advance.

Probably shouldn’t do this on ramps like that. Draining won’t be a problem, but it will likely not allow you to put enough fluid back in. Same for the transmission.
