2017 BMW G310R Review : I'm a huge fan of smaller capacity motorcycles and at the end of last year BMW released their smallest capacity bike to date - the 313cc single cylinder funster the G310R. With it's light weight and rider friendly characteristics this bike is a hoot to ride, is super economical and is A2 licence friendly. Could this be the ideal starter/commuter motorcycle? Stay tuned to find out!
Huge thanks to Bahnstormer of Maidenhead for lending me the bike for this review - if you want to have a go on this or any other BMW demo bike give Aldo and the crew a call, a very friendly bunch!

When I first saw a G310R in early April 2021 I looked for a review on RU-vid. This was the first one I watched. In September I passed my test and bought the 2021 model. In three weeks I have ridden 1060 miles on it. A great first motorbike and Andy’s review of this 2017 is spot on.

How much iscthe maintenance on the bike? I am going to get one because it's beautiful but I sm worried of the cost. Thanks
@average.yt.commenter609
@average.yt.commenter609 3 месяца назад
@@kings8217 The actual parts cost more than some other cheaper brands. Some of that is because the parts are actually better quality. But overall it's not that you're going to be fixing it more often, but when you do you'll pay some more than others.

I'm a great fan of the smaller capacity bikes, means you can have lots of fun without being in triple figure speeds. Thanks for the review TMF.

What a great little bike, and for the money, excellent value, I quite like the idea of the exhaust coming out of the back, it would inhibit corrosion, looks the usual BMW quality, great to see you banging out such great reviews, honest and detailed,the best on RU-vid for me... and am sure many other subscribers would agree !!!!! .. Cheers...

Your videos inspired me on getting a motorcycle. Subscribed and watched your entire tour videos. It felt like I was behind your back the entire time. I bought a G310R as a trainer. I say it's better built in India than on China. Thanks for those awesome videos. Philippines here BTW.

Got me G310R about two months ago. My first ever bike and the only regret I have is that I didn't start riding any sooner. Very easy to ride. I agree with the comment that it feels like a bicycle (which was my first impression also when I took on the road first time). It's fuel mileage gets better with time also. I got about 30km/l the other day when I filled her up, but that's in city traffic. When you ride it on the highway, it goes to over 4l/100km. Gearbox also gets smoother as mileage accumulates. One thing that sold it for me over the Duke 390 is the maintenance costs. The BMW needs to be serviced every 10 000km, whereas the Duke is every 7500km. And each service is more expensive than that on the BMW. KTM says it depends on how the bike is ridden that determines what needs to be replaced, but they did not create a favorable impression on me for affordable riding. Hence I walked out and got me this. Enjoying every minute of it.

bandituk I would also love to see a video on the 310GS, as I will be getting my A2 bike in the next year or two. At the moment the 310R is better for me, but I hope to go on longer rides and maybe tour the UK, which the 310GS would be better for.

I noticed you were a bit hesitant about the ages for different bike categories, so I'll explain. This is the *EU Motorcycle License System* which overwrote the UK system in 2013: *16-17, AM* - 50cc *17-19, A1* - 125cc *19-24, A2* - 47bhp, but you can have up to 94bhp that must be restricted to 47bhp. *21-24, A (PROGRESSIVE)* - you must have an A2 license for 2 years if you want to upgrade to an A. e.g. Mike got his A2 license a month after he turned 19, meaning a month after Mike turns 21, he can get a full license as he had an A2 for 2 years. However, Charlie got an A2 license a month after he turned 20, meaning he has to wait until a month after he is 22 to get his full license. *24, A* - No Restrictions.
@wallenz
@wallenz 7 лет назад
Lordi mercy you guys live in a fucking police state! What is going on over in England?! Over here... grown man at the age of 18, therefore NO restrictions. The way it should be. You can buy any car and any motorcycle you like when you've taken your license. What's next for you guys? Licence for bicycles? High visibility vests, hard hats, and walking licence? I mean this is utter lunacy. You guys gotta do something about it. It's _abuse_ Edit. I just looked into the cost for a licence in England, I mean, you guys are getting robbed. :( You guys are welcome to move over to America.
@desantos1234
@desantos1234 7 лет назад
wallenz BLAME THE EU! you could get a full license at 17 in the UK before 2006 when the EU put in their first restrictions law, then they put this system in place in 2013. Unfortunately there ain't much hope for the Government to change this after we fully leave the EU in a couple of years because if it doesn't increase safety, they won't do anything about it. It's biased though, as you can get a full Car Driving licence at 17. I'm currently 16 and riding a geared 50cc SuperMoto on an AM Category License.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
It sure is a bizarre situation - so glad I'm over 24 (just).....and thanks Desantos123UK for the clarification...
@wallenz
@wallenz 7 лет назад
Ah the EU, well I hope things will improve now that you are getting out. All the best buddy.
@wallenz
@wallenz 7 лет назад
Actually it isn't and it's the way it should be. When you are 18 you are 18. Period. You're a grown man. As for leader bikes they are no more dangerous than a smaller one, in many ways they are actually safer, heck, you can buy a Corvette when you are 18, no stupid restriction that says you must first drive a Mini cooper for years to come or something. As for the English? Well if they can have a A1 licence for two years, they should then be able to get a A license when they hit 18. They've had two years of practice riding a bike, but apparently they can't. Their system (or EU imposed nonsense) is messed up. It's abuse. We're talking about grown men, of legal age. No but wait, they also have to be 24!!! So you have to wait *7* frikking years after you've turned 18 to get a non restrictive licence. 7 years. But wait there's apparently more, if you are 24 when you take your motorcycle licence you don't need to have any prior experience to go non restrictive either, nope, all that's needed is that you are 24!!! Whereas if you have had A licence for two years with two years experience riding a bike you STILL can't get a liter bike when you hit 18 but must wait until you hit 24. Yeah that's very rational and logical...not. *7* years dude. So yeah, our system over here is the way it should be buddy, damn straight it is. Guess what, things in life are dangerous, so what. Lots of things are, we don't need some abusive nanny state messing with us thank you very much.

Thanks for the review. Back in march 2017 I brought a little 125 and enjoyed it so much I knew I wanted to take it further and get my Full a licence. I started looking for a 300 bike as I wanted something bigger to move onto (but not too bid) I saw this review after checking out your others one morning before work, and promptly looked at the BMW website, visited my local dealer, signed up for the rookie to rider deal (check it out) and now the proud owner two months later and a week of excellent week of DSA training with BMW training in Royston, I have my my full licence which I passed first time. If it wasn't for your review, I wouldn't have looked the bmw as I never knew they made such a small engine bike., and the rookie to rider deal is a no brainier, full bmw training a lease bike for a couple of years, and full BMW clothing all for a small deposit and 99 per month. Picked the bike up Saturday and have done 300miles already in two days, it's a great bike, enough speed for a novice and easy to handle. As you say, it's great to learn your craft on! Thanks again, I would never have known about these without your review,

Buying this for my 18th birthday, love this freaking bike. I honestly had difficulty choosing between this or g310r cuz both are absolutely amazing but what made me choose this bike was it has the ability to perform well in off-road to I.e something which bmw 310r model lacks, with this bike you can go to long rides, roam off-road and this is why I choose this one and I’m also 6 feet which makes me look like a absolutely beast when riding this beast 😎

I'd definitely have the BMW - the BMW just seemed light and nimble and very well put together where as the KTM seemed to overheat quite a bit, seemed a bit breathless in comparison and I just didn't get on with the looks of it - the KTM isn't a bad bike by any means, it's just I found the BMW much better in all respects....thanks for the kind words - TMF

I really like it. BMW used to make single cylinder smaller bikes these were, essentially, half a flat twin, but the cylinder was straight up. The crankshaft was in-line and they had shaft drive. I think BMW stopped making those singles in the 1960s, the R27 being the last.

As always, very good review! In my "days of yore" I rode everything from 50 CC mini's to 9XX supersports that I had no business on. After being away from bikes for a number of year I settled on the R3 when I came back. One of the deciding factors for me what the R3 produces "enough" horsepower at ~42 bhp. For me the drop to anything in the lower 30's would be too much for highway riding. I commute everyday on my R3 and I couldn't imagine having less power on the highway section of the ride. Having said that the BMW sure looks great!

I am definitely considering this bike, for when I get my A2 license. I currently ride the Honda CB125F, but I am slightly disappointed with the build quality and I previously had a Yamaha Aerox 50cc, but my local Yamaha dealership are really unhelpful. So I am looking at getting my A2 bike from a different manufacturer, I was previously thinking about the KTM 390 duke, but now I think the BMW 310 is the best option. The 310 is cheaper and BMW have a good record for build quality and customer service.

Being as the KTM 390 is about the same price the KTM seems way better value. Obviously if you are restricted to A2 then its a moot point.

A word of caution from an owner and very experienced rider. This bike stalls very easily and often when you least expect it. You need to give it plenty of revs when pulling away and, having ridden very many bikes including plenty of 250cc singles, I'd say this is the worst bike for this problem that I've ridden. Of course it could just be my bike (2017 model) but some other reviewers also mention the problem so I'd suggest doing a bit of research. Apart from that, (and I'd also take issue and have to say there is some vibration), it's a great fun little bike and I'd agree with everything else said about it. Personally though, I couldn't recommend it to new riders as the stalling can cause serious issues.
@Darksouls98
@Darksouls98 4 года назад
I had my driving lessons on this bike, and i completely agree. It stalls if you don't give it 4k revs when pulling away, also on the highway it vibrates so much that it makes it hard to see what's in my mirrors.

Thanks for another great, practical review that speaks to practical riders. I only became aware of this about 10mins ago while I was looking at the Motorrad page. I’m undergoing cancer treatment and it’s madd me realise life can be too short, so I wax family banned after our first child, maybe 14 years ago, but I’d live to climb on a good town/commuter bike that can do the odd 60-100 mile trip, comfortably but at a more leisurely pace that my Ducati 900 used to do. You’d already sold me on the Duke 390, but I lived with an R80/7, and we went through a lot together including 265000 miles, so I have a major affinity with the marque. In your opinion, if you had to choose this or the Duke 390...which would you opt for?

Judging from all the reviews, the Yamaha MT-03 and Kawi Z400 (twin cylinders) and a couple other singles are way better options at this price point. What's holding the BMW back from a Western pov is the Indian target market - very short high gears, easy stalling at low revs, underpowered at our highway speeds and heavy vibes from 7000 rpm. Fine for city riding but I'd want more for my 5K in 2021.

Seems like a cracking little machine, they should have put on an led headlight and belt drive and it would have been top of the class, which I suppose it may be already.Looks really smart too, I'd have loved on of these as my first bike back in the early eighties. Great review as always TMF, really looking forward to the next instalment of your Scottish trip by the way, roll on Friday, lol. PS I don't know what you think but I reckon there should be a push for all motorcycle manufacturers to fit LED headlights as standard on the grounds of safety. Riding on UK roads at night without decent lights is potentially lethal when one considers the condition of our roads! I know some will say it's a matter of cost but actually in this day and age it needn't cost much more than traditional halogen. LEDs offer so many benefits as I'm sure you know, my new car has full led headlights and the difference is staggering. Cheers and all the best tony

Agreed Tony - maybe there's a video in that!
@antonoat
@antonoat 7 лет назад
I've noticed after looking at many of the model specific motorbike forums, one of the things many riders want to do is upgrade their bikes lights,often with LED as most of us are aware of their advantages both for conspicuity and improved night time riding. Upgrading our lights to LED as a retrofit is often very difficult or expensive, I'm sure manufacturers could achieve this easily and keep costs reasonable. The roads where I live(near Cirencester) are shocking with holes five or six inches deep in places, hit one of these on a straight piece of road is bad enough but hit at night on a bend and you could easily come a cropper! Being able to clearly see these hazards in advance would make a big difference to safety.Generally riding in the countryside at night with the often abysmal dipped beams of most bikes is quite a challenge. Usually I don't do much night riding, thankfully! Sorry to go on, lol Cheers

What a little bargain, I was really surprised when you announced the price. 185kg is not a light bike not in this category. I was suspicious so a quick check tells me it's actually 158kg ;). I sat on the new Duke 390 and for me that's the winner with LED lighting all round, a modern colour TFT dash, more power, lighter and still only £4500 and let's be honest it's the ultimate cool bike for the younger rider or would certainly bring a smile to your face if you had to commute on one which I'm thinking of doing when it's time for the MT09 to go.
