2017 BMW K1600B Bagger Review
Having ridden the luxury super-tourer, BMW's K1600GT earlier in the year, I was very interested to see what this "baggerised" version was like when it was released by BMW, presumably aimed at the US market. Like it or loathe it, does it work as a vehicle in the UK and is it any good? Stay tuned to find out...
Many thanks to Bahnstormer, the BMW dealer for Maidenhead and the surrounding areas, for the loan of the bike for this review. Check 'em out at www.bahnstorme...

Dear Mr Flyer, you do make the best reviews ever. No smart cartoony things, no crap music, no nonsense at all. Focus on the bike and the riding experience. Well done indeed!

Thank you John, I try and make videos I'd like to watch - cartoony things, lots of music, too many drone shots, quick fire edits, swearing and wheelies you won't find on my channel :0) ....crikey, what a boring old git I've become....

Have to agree there, no bull sh*t withTMF's reviews, but I wonder, could he "fix it for me" to have a test ride on an R1200RT, without costing me money, as I plan to take my Advanced Test and become a Blood Biker here in Devon? As that's the main bike they use down this way. Just asking, no worries if not.

TheMissendenFlyer Not a boring old git at all, don't sell yourself short mate. You offer real, practical, useful information that one actually NEEDS when they're considering buying a motorcycle. Nobody cares about intricacies of the gearbox or gear ratio or forged alloy pistons or auto blipper or suspension travel or the rest of the tedious information that most reviewers focus on these days that you can bloody Google! I mean, who in their right mind cares about the numbers when they're buying a motorcycle, I guarantee you that's the last thing on anyone's mind when they first walk into a dealership. How tall are you and can you flatfoot it, does it have protection if you drop it, can you handle the weight, how many useful rider aids does it have, stability, comfort, wind protection - these are all the information you want to know and you always provide these. Must say, if reviews like yours are considered "old & boring" these days, then I don't want to be a modern twat!

So far I’ve Am Really Enjoying my K1600 GA I’ve been on one big toure and many small tours and rides so far. And she is a really capable bike and in the passes / Mountains she for a big and hevey bike handles like a VFR or similar bike even two up no massive difference. The power delivery is amazing I haven’t been in the top end of the Rev range. And so smooth. The storage is very good for two and the entertainment for big transit / Motorways days is awesome I’ve riden 11hrs got of her at the end of the day and still could ride more. Also the service I have had from North Oxford BMW has been amazing as expected.

Thanks for the review. The windscreen is actually one of the things I really like. Being 6'2", it actually provides smooth air from my shoulders up, and really wonderful for summer driving. I bought the Bagger screen for my K1600GT, and use it as a summer screen. Prefer the GT for travel, and not into the bagger styling. K1600 engine in either form is wonderful for long distance. Boston to Salt Lake City this summer for the BMW Convention. Mt GT does not have the up/down shift, and it could really use it, the 18's come with that now. One thing you cannot do with the Bagger is add the TOP CASE, which on the K1600GT allows you to ride without the side cases, and still carry some necessities....

I dont think it's coming anytime soon. They released the new RT for 2019 and no updates dash. I own one and I am glad my bike does not have a tablet stuck on. I prefer the analogue clocks, with the digital infotainment. It actually makes the the bike look and feel like a real machine, and not like something out of star wars.

I love hearing all the guys who got it and love them. I sold my 16 K GTLE and took a chance to get a demo (250 miles) 18 k B GA, black. 42 mo warranty. Which you must have !!!! Can not wait to get it tomorrow. I fell in love as soon as I saw it and I did love the GTL. What a F....N machine. God damn. It is a rocket ship and it is ok by me that it is limited to 105 mph. I would never come even close to that on NJ roads, sadly!!!! Riding the B, you can almost fall asleep cruising at 80. I am not joking !!!!!. It is unreal. Honda, start creating some nasty machines. Boring, is still boring.

Duolever front end on the K1600, was also introduced on the K1200s in 2004 and carried over to the K1300 and K1600. Telelever front end was introduced on oilhead boxers in 94 and is still on the GS and RT but not all the twins, BM do now offer some bikes with standard telescopic forks. The duolever bikes are fantastically stable on the brakes. If it looks like tele forks but theres a shock hidden up there it's Telelever - if it looks more like old girder forks it's Duolever.

Good to see BMW have learnt how to make side/prop stands now. I have an older (1990) Aircooled boxer whose sidestand goes forward & underneath the left cylinder, impossible to use safely whilst sitting on the bike, have to get off first. Of course most airhead owners modify that ! Re air pressure from the screen, it is essentially a venturi effect (you know like how old carbs work) that creates a high pressure above you and a low pressure behind the screen. As a pilot you will know how a plane wing works to create lift, it the same effect giving lift to your helmet/back. Thanks for another interesting video, but I'm not saving up for one of those beasties.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yes that's exactly the effect in practice.....although I think technically it might be the Bernoulli effect rather than the venturi effect but let's not split hairs!

At 5'8" I can see why you didn't have a problem with buffeting on the Motorway. I'm 5'11" and took one out on test last week and it was awful and my head was getting blasted unbearably. the radio was inaudible at motorway speeds...which is exactly where you want it on a long trip. When I complained to the dealer he agreed and said that has been the biggest complaint from customers and suggested either the BMW taller screen @£300 or Puig screen at £107 should cure the problem. I will know tomorrow as I am testing a K1600 with a taller screen.

Thanks for getting this one up TMF, I was very keen to get your initial impressions on it. I am waiting for them to arrive here in RSA so I can get a test myself. I recently ride the GT, and overall I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I thought the front end was extremely heavy, I hoping the B version has a different sort of feel, perhaps improved by the different riding position. The engine is magic, you can really ride it in 6th for most of the ride.

I rode this bike last week. I loved the agility, six cylinder, and the option of putting up my feet on the floorboards. I will say it does not have the low ed torque that a Harley offers but I am also comparing to it my Low Rider S which is not the same segment of vehicle. My biggest gripe is that I cannot pair my phone to the bike and listen to the music through the speakers. I have to wear a helmet. This is where I get angry....both saddlebags were filled with water after the bike was sitting in the rain for a couple of days. I could not store my hat, wallet and phone. I had to find a plastic bag. And another thing, roughly 400+ miles on a brand new bike, the left heated hand grip was inoperable.

I have owned a K1600B now for two years and I am impressed with the handling. It is very comfortable indeed but it can be very sporty as well! The weight is gone when you start riding and you can keep up easily with sportier bikes. But after a day of fast riding your body feels like a firm workout in the gym. I still love it to bits but I am considering trading it in for an S1000XR, 100kg lighter and the same power.

Last week I traded in my K1600GT for a GS Rallye (after being sold by your review of the GS!). My GT didn't have the reverse gear. I've watched your "gravel driveway test" on some of your reviews... and you'd find that quite the challenge with either 1600. I had mine for 4 years and toured in Canada and the US... where it really shone. However, closer to home, Iincreasingly found myself leaving the big BMW in the garage and riding a smaller bike. I'm hoping that the GS will still work for touring but also offer some fun on unpaved roads we frequently come across in Ontario... as well as as being easier to move around... not that I ever actually dropped the K1600!

TheMissendenFlyer being 5'7" I guess the overall weight would be a concern, once that baby starts to tip over no chance of stopping it!!! I owned a Harley Street Glide special for a year and it was great on the open road but tough for me to muscle around, back up etc! The GS low suspension & low seat might be the best touring bike set up for me.

Nice review.. I have a GT and had a sit on the bagger at the motogp.. plush seat as you say and loved the styling. BMW are just hitting sixes at the moment I reckon. Envious of the reverse gear, mine is 2011 model so reverse is the wife.. lol

From the handlebars backwards I can admire the styling. Old fashioned design template but delivered in an very modern way somehow. But the nose is like any other new BMW tourer and a bit of a styling contradiction. Doubt it'll tempt many Harley or Gold Wing buyers to change brand. Interesting to ride, I imagine.

The breaks are Brembo's they are BMW Branded but if you look around the calipers on certain parts it has the Brembo Logo on it. Just BMW branded :) thats the same for all BMW breaks apart form the G310R.... I love the Bagger. Would be cool to see some more flying videos like of the old times (I passed my Skills test today) and if you ever need a bike to try or loan and cant get one anywhere else come to Allan Jefferies in Leeds... We can sort you out ;)

Maybe someone else has noticed the same thing but I find it interesting that the K1600B in the US tail lights are all red whereas it looks like the ones on your demo bike were red on the top and clear on the sides where the turn indicators flash.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
I think that's just a difference in regulations for the two markets (Europe v US).....not allowed red indicators in Europe but I think they are allowed in the US (I'm sure someone can confirm/deny)??
@That_Paul_Guy
@That_Paul_Guy 7 лет назад
Maybe so. Rear turn indicators on cars can either be orange or red so I’d assume it’s the same on bikes. Take some of the HDs for example, they have some bikes with the small bullets that have a red lens and double as a turn signal. Makes you wonder why BMW would go to the trouble of making two different lenses though...maybe they felt all red looked better, who knows. Have a good one and thanks for the review. I enjoyed demoing this bike myself.

Lots of technology but lacking in bagger character as far as the sound goes. Needs more rumble out of those giant exhausts. I'm not saying to replicate a V twin sound but give it something besides a whine BMW. Having said that, it's still a beast and I like how you can have both traditional pegs and forward floorboards to stretch out on the highway. Another fine review, hopefully you get to keep it longer. Cheers!

You have to test drive a Harley. Just once. I'd suggest a Road King or a Road Glide. The Street Glide seems to be the newest craze, for a while now, as they probably look better than the Road Glide. The Road Glide has the fairing attached to the frame and it does not move when you turn. Looks like a shark. The Street Glide has a big fairing that is attached to the steering forks so it does turn when you turn, but in strong winds on a long drive, it can wear you out. The Road King just has the clear wind screen and it kind of resembles the Heritage Soft Tail Classic, but it is a touring bike frame whereas the Heritage Soft Tail Classic is, as the name implies, a soft tail. Looks like a rigid frame but it does have rear shocks. My FatBoy S has the same frame. Not as soft as the name implies though. But the touring bikes are really soft and have some long legs too. Not unusual to hear people taking 800-900 miles in one day on one of those. Yes they are heavy, but you can handle it. If anything, just to say you rode one. Thanks for the videos!

I've found that lot of big bikes handle really well at lower speeds. It's trying to keep all that mass stuck to the road in corners at high speed that can become engaging. Fortunately, most will do just fine at anything near legal speeds. Would like this one more if they added a little color contrast. This all black business doesn't really rev my engine. Love the floorboards and windscreen. I like the 6's sound with stock mufflers. I heard one once with aftermarket cans and it sounded like a chainsaw...and I like trees.

Awesome review, awesome bike. Don´t know if you ever try full throttle all the way up to the red line (because I only saw you donin it on small bikes), but if you did, you must agree with me: it´s something unbelievable. Looks like a great cross continental tourer TMF, not sure how good it would be in the mountains but great for two up I would think. I actually don't find the shift assist on my GS clunky providing you change at slightly higher revs (5500-6000 rpm) while accelerating, which is what it's designed for. The down shift always feels smooth to me.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
...out of interest ploppy, what year is your GS? Mine is fine at high revs but pretty basic lower down - I'm riding the KTM Super Duke R currently and that has an up and down shifter that works smooth as you like at any speed/revs.....
@neilb4297
@neilb4297 7 лет назад
Mine's a 66 plate. It is a little bit clunky at lower revs but i don't tend to use the quick shifter when pottering around at lower speeds, but its very smooth under load when accelerating at higher revs when its needed. Down shifting is always smooth at any speed.

Great Job, mate. As overviews go, you have really nailed it. I looked very seriously at this bike to replace my Victory Vision, a bike that I dearly love. But this new bagger, as nice as it is didn't quite have what it took for me to pull the trigger. Don't get me wrong, it's a great machine and superior to the Vision in many ways. The power train is the biggest strength in my view. That said, I still love the rumble and character of my big V. I am also disappointed that they didn't adhere to the Concept 101's design. The bike lost too much in translation when it went production. It looks too much like a GT for my taste. And of course, the ridiculous purchase price and cost of ownership was a huge turn-off. Also, this bike isn't nearly as comfortable as my Vision, nor will it be as reliable. So I passed on it, kept the Vision and bought a Triumph Trophy SE instead, a fabulous machine that you also did a very well-rounded review on. So thanks for that! I have come to value your observations and attention to detail when you do these things, and it helped me quite a bit. Make no mistake, the K1600B is an extremely nice bike and I am sure BMW will sell a ton of them. It just wasn't for me.

Great review as usual, went to try and get a test ride on one at my local dealer only to be told no bikes with the 6 cylinder engine could be test rode due to a stop sale order due to a few having stuck between 5th and 6th gear locking up the back wheel ???? I had a conversation with a bloke outside the dealer who was trying to book his K1600GT in for the gearbox mod but they didn't know what to do with it yet-------but he had received a letter from BMW ? Shame-----think i will give it a miss

It's been a safety recall in North America and some other countries for a while now, more than likely warmer countries where they get to do more miles.Us British are at the back of the queue as usual, but people are still riding around on a dangerous bike- the gear selector fork needs to be changed due to not being hardened enough and with wear can lock between two gears locking the back wheel-(thats the info all over the net) glad i never bought 1 but feel sorry for the people who did
