Is the BMW K1600GT one of the best sport touring motorcycles of all time? In this video I ride cross country, in the city and in the hills. I even try it in the dirt to determine if it actually can stand up to the title. Please like, subscribe & share if you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching.

The best thing about the K1600 is the Gold-Wing....because so many riders think the G-W is the undisputed king of big-bore touring and won't buy anything else. Thus here in the UK a used K1600 can be yours for as little as a quarter of the new price.

Gday BB, yes they have certainly taken a beating price wise here in Aus lately, main concern I get from owners is the price of servicing.

Excellent review - it was interesting to watch the K1600 handling on gravel roads, most other reviews have slated it as being totally useless on any loose surface which clearly isn't the case.
@standupmoto

Gday Mike, I guess in fairness to those other reviewers the K1600 is no motocross machine for sure but once you learn to steer it with the rear wheel it’s not quite as scary. That small front wheel is never going to make it a competent dirt road machine but it manages, I’ve come across a couple of riders over the last couple of years touring Aus with many many dirt road kms on their K1600’s. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍

Hi mate , fellow Aussie here , well Taswegien anyway lol. Just want to commend you on your review , very informative , down to earth real rider review , and the dirt section was awesome . What a lot of other country people possibly don't understand about Australia is , yes we do have a lot of tar sections but we also have a lot of secondary roads that are well maintained gravel ( and some not so well maintained ) that lead to awesome places and sights , and even just a short cut through minor roads to major roads, and your section of dirt travel was a real good review of how a road bike handles the "dirt" . I myself had a 2014 HD Ultra Limited ( looking at a K1600 now actually ) and that handled dirt roads - bit scitish at times but it wasn't afraid of the dirt . Love the honest everyday rider reviews, keep up the good work. Cheers Trip..
@standupmoto
@standupmoto Год назад
Gday John, yes agree with what you’re saying here. I do a lot of dirt road riding here in South Aus, the K1600 is fine but you do have to steer it with the rear wheel. The little front can get a bit nervous at times on the unsealed stuff, on the flip side it’s great on the black stuff. Love Tassie, just came back from a week at Salamanca. She’s a hidden treasure that island you live on, don’t tell too many of us on the mainland- we’ll all by down there! Cheers.

WOW, you have set the bench mark on how to do a review. Looking at maybe updating my k1600gt to the new 2022 one, the British reviewers that went to Spain for the launch were hopeless explaining or not the updates, I wish they flew you out there, BMW would have got there moneys worth for sure. Great video,keep this standard up and you will dominate reviews.

Gday, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes the K1600 really is a great machine, I do a bit of everything in this video but it’s really at home on the long haul rides. The big six is just so smooth, I find I don’t get any of the hand or feet tingles that can be there on some bikes. Cheers.

I noticed you kindly converted the disk sizes from mm to inches. I don't know about other locales but in America the conventional sizing is actually using millimeters! Surprising, but true. I had never before heard of a brake disc referred to in inches and had to convert it BACK into mm to understand its size. Thanks for the continued excellent bike reviews! :)

Hi Matthew, yes it’s just something I do, when the metric conversion went through Aus back in the seventies I was in senior high so we had to learn both. Thanks for the great review. Also, smart to buy used! Had a 1600 GT (also bought used) but then sold it for a slightly used GSA! Nothing wrong with the GT- just wanted more off- road capability. The way you rip the GT off road you don’t need a GS! I believe the reason the windshield retracts when you shut it off is to prevent someone from stealing the removable sat nav unit. Very clever! Enjoy your bike!

I don’t have one of these nor do I anticipate doing so but you have made it such an attractive proposition. You said one of the most awesome things about this machine was how you can go 2 up, hoon up mountain roads, dirt trails and town. I think the most awesome thing is watching an Aussie jump it on dirt 😮🫣 👏👍👌

@standupmoto Год назад
Gday Ian, thanks mate glad you enjoyed it. yes they are a great amount of fun with oodles of grunt but don’t let me misrepresent it, she’s a handful in the dirt and it’ll only steer with the back wheel. That little front will only plough if you try to steer with it, all in all though it’s a blast of a bike to ride. Cheers 👍

What a great review! I am really enjoying my 14 GTL. A few things: I made a few ergo mods to fit my 6’5” self. A 7Jurock windscreen, Russell Day-long saddle and Heli bars. Also have aftermarket bright lights and flashing tail light. The bike eats rear tires for breakfast Riding the twisties puts a huge grin on my face I have 36k miles and have had no problems. Been absolutely reliable I can ride 600 mile days and still want more. It’s that good. I put a BMW Nav Vl in, but it failed me, so I replaced it with a Garmin Zumo XT mounted to an adapter that fits in the original slot and it has been great! Just had a major service and it set me back $ 1,600. Not the cheapest to maintain. The sound system is all but worthless, so I play tunes from my phone to my helmet via my Sena 20S.

That’s great your enjoying your GT & the fuel economy is unparalleled for such a big bike, very handy when your clocking up the big miles. Yes they obliterate rear tyres if you have the tap open for sure, I agree with your comments re the stereo. I also have a Goldwing and the stereo runs rings around the GT’s. Flashing tail light? I haven’t seen that one, enjoy your ride and stay upright. Thanks for the comment, cheers.

Excellent review and I formation. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 2019 GT Sport...only hesitation is my over attachment to my mint 2016 Kawa GTR1400 (Concours) which is also an excellent bike, but the lack of cruise is becoming a deal breaker. Watching your video has convinced me more. Thanks👍
@standupmoto
@standupmoto 2 года назад
Hi, thanks and glad you enjoyed the video. The GTR1400 is also a great bike and I understand your hesitation, cruise nowadays is a must I recon. Not only to keep your license but to lighten your grip on the bars, the big fours can give a bit of hand tingles after a couple of hours. Not that you’ll have that problem with the six is just so smooth. Riding properly 500km (a bit over 300 ml) is fine. Center stand is strong also, good enough for two people to mount then rock off, Shoei Neotec helmets fit easily in the side boxes. So there’s lots of good stuff I maybe forgot in the video, now the not so good. She’s bloody heavy, now that’s a good thing for cruising but if you’ve got uneven terrain or gravel at home reverse is a must.I would recommend to anyone looking for a bike of this cost to maybe try to get an hour or two on a demo if you can, I’m sure you’ll love it. It’s hard not to and the 19 will have keyless ign also, if it’s a GT you’re looking at try to get one fully optioned with all the bits I mention in my video. Hope this helps, cheers.
@pielight7449
@pielight7449 2 года назад
@@standupmoto many thanks for the extra info. Reassuringly the bike I am looking at has quite a few extras including those you mention, eg reverse, quick shifter, radio system etc. No nav and being a sport model the screen is a bit on the short side (although still OK not as protectiveas the R1250RT I tried), but those are easily sorted. I too it ot for around 90 mins...as you say it was brilliant. Incredibly smooth and comfortable. It didn't have quite the top end rush of the GTR, but I don't spend much time riding like that, so not a problem. The K16 was nicer in every other way, with very light controls and handles amazingly for its size. The extra weight over the GTR did not make much difference when manoeuvring - the reverse gear made some manoeuvres a lot easier than with my GTR. I'm 6 foot and could flat foot with seat in the high position, althpugh not as easily as woth the GTR. As it stands, I intend to go to the dealers and put a deposit down in the morning! Thanks again, Paul.

Enjoyed that IMMENSELY. Funny thing, I recently purchased a '22 R1250 GSA, and have already been thinking about trading it in for the K1600 GT. A few of the things I was afraid I might be giving up in the trade were the GSA's off road capabilities and it's surprising ability to carve the canyons. Your video indicates my fears are COMPLETELY misplaced! You just may have convinced me to do it. Damn you!
@standupmoto
@standupmoto Год назад
Thanks Ray glad you enjoyed the video, you can do a little bit of soft off rd and it’s very exiting with the traction control off BUT there’s very little clearance & no bodywork protection if you lay it down. The small front wheel throws some challenges for sure in the sand but to be fair she’s running road tyres. In summary it’s not even close to GSA off the sealed roads, BUT (another big but) if your pretty handy on large capacity bikes playing with 160 HP of linear power from the big six it’s a blast. I’ve been riding for fifty years on lots of exiting bikes but this still lifts the heart rate off the sealed roads or on when it’s wet with the traction off. Then I can put on my sensible hat and ride her across the country as a tourer, it’s a rocket. Cheers.

Just found your channel. Like your review style. Nice mix in showing some riding and talking details. 👍🏼 Nothing like the reviewers who spend 15 minutes riding and talking through their headset with unbearable audio quality. - I'm trying to make up my mind between this more sporty K1600 or the more compfy Goldwing. -seen your review on the Goldwing just before this one- Beside going to have to make a 500 km trip 3 to 4 times a month I will also do a lot of local and city riding. I was thinking this BMW was more suitable, but then I saw you taking the Goldwing on dirt roads and through the sand.... I did 2 test rides already on the K1600, going to take a test drive on a Goldwing soon. But it will be a hard nut to crack in making a choice between the 2 😎 -By the way: I'll never get comfortable riding 2 wheels in the sand, you have 4WD or tracks for that... ✌🏼

Hello from the UK. I'm thinking of getting a K1600 and this is the best review I've ever seen. Of any bike. Your riding on unpaved roads shows you have balls of Steel. Gday Michael thanks mate glad you enjoyed it, the big Beemer is certainly one hell of a bike. Unfortunately couldn’t put the track stuff up due to copyright issues with billboard advertising, it got flagged on upload. If you get one just remember it’s heavy to move around at home, I’d suggest getting the reverse model if you’ve got tight spaces. Apart from that I’m yet to fault it, she’s 3 bikes in one and riding her properly it’s economical (4.7 LPH) just shy of 60mpg UK or 50mpg US.Great to hear from the UK, will get there one day, cheers from Aus.

I had a 16 GTLE used and the18 Grand America new. Same engine and almost everything else on it. I honestly can say by now, you better of with the new Goldwing. Just a super machine to own. Extremally more reliable than the BMW K and cheaper to repair. In fact, I so enjoy working on my Wing now. Comfort, by far, a lot more than the K. Will not own a K again. Simple as that.

A very detailed review. Enjoyed it. It is very nice that on this model BMW already used the "standards" turning signal location on one side instead of having left-left and right-right like on some older models. Is it in the manual that is should have the 100-octane fuel only? Thanks for the answer. Got my full watch. Cheers. Ride safe.

Glad you liked it! I think it recommends 95 Oct min, that’s based on the Aussie fuel rating system but the number rating is different in other parts of the world. I did try on the lower rated unleaded (91 in Aus) but it got a ping under acceleration, not good. cheers.

The answer is yes. 100,000ks on my K16, the fastest bike out there for carving out a quck 1000ks. 500k tank, smooth at 200ks/hr on cruise control, can carve the corners, but be prepared to shred the front tyre. K16 off road does have a problen as clay can block the radiator. Its massive and very finely built. Need to hose it clean regularly if riding on dirt. Slipper clutch is standard for a reason, engine braking is substantial would step out while cornering and making a bad down change if not for the slipper. Such massive torque, 4th gear 40k/hr to 240k/hr. Top speed 290 off the clock with full luggage. 272 on the GPS. And yes I have spent a fair bit of time in Germany. Now on a GSXS GT. Really missing the on the fly suspension tuning and on demand windscreen adjustment. The baby GSXR engine is taking a bit of getting accustomed to.

Gday Jorge, glad you liked the review. Yes I think the Michelins are a pretty good choice for this bike, remembering this is an interesting motorcycle. Tyre choice is a bit tricky, it’s a tourer and a sports bike which narrows the field a bit when it comes to tyres. Pirelli also have a couple of good choices for the K1600. Wow a new 19 in 24 ! Well the 19,s were a great machine and no doubt priced accordingly so well done, if you’re going to venture off the black be very wary of that small dia front wheel. Ride safe 👍

I also have a '15 Shakir Orange K1600GT...bought it as a new left over in '16. My 13th bike in 42 years of street riding (add on another 16 years on trail and dirt). My bike now has 128K miles. First; the best overall bike I've owned. A good close comparison id the Kawasaki Concours (owned both the 1400 and the 1000). The Concours quicker off the line; but the power and torque of the 1600 catches up. Both handle equal; the 1600 is more powerful, and more comfortable. Had a GL1800 Gwing; obviously, more comfortable on long cross country rides (but the GT is also comfortable...even for a 6'3", 225lb guy). Other than a 'Busa; no superbike owned. The 'Busa was obviously faster and quicker. But; overall, the K1600GT is tops. My problems with the bike: 1st igniter went bad around 95K miles; the 2nd went bad around 115K miles (at which point, I had the other 4 replaced). I had to replace the headlamp bulb around 90K miles. Advice; BMW charges $300 for the bulb; found the exact bulb online at Walmart for $95. It's actually a pain to replace. A lever piece in the rear shaft that allows for up and down and slight side to side movement; it froze, and had to be replaced (around the 50K mile mark) ; the extended warranty covered it. I'm on my 3rd battery. The tire pressure monitor system is terrible. Replaced the battery/transmitter a few times (battery alone can not be replaced). The rear TPS has always been intermittent; even with a new battery. BMW refused to believe it could be in the computer....so, I live with a warning light 70% of the time on the rear. Last, I just had the front strut replaced (the struct and coil are one unit) due to oil leak at 126K miles. I drove it on coil alone for 3 months while I waited for BMW in Germany to get the part to the States. That was a $2400 part and labor bill; huge difference with the new part. The BMW tech told me the only thing that could come up next is the starter unit; but it is strong now. I thought the 1st and 2nd gear clutch was worn; he thought otherwise. I replaced the poor fog lights with a set from Clearview Lights (Darla model); great decision. Bike came new with the shorter sport screen; replaced with a tall screen (put the original back on around 120K miles; the tall screen was worn and done). The short screen really sucks in reducing wind noise...the speakers are useless. I ride with a Sena 20 sound set, and it is useable with the sport screen (but much better with a tall screen). I'll buy another screen before the next long trip. I wish I had replaced the saddle with a Sargent brand; but never did. The saddle is adequate (as far as OEM saddles go). Anyhow; bike rides great; same power, speed, handles great (again). Oh; forgot, right off the dealer lot; noticed oil drops in the garage (1st 50 miles). Took it back; they torques the pan. A few days later, same problem. Turned out I had a warped oil pan. Replaced with new, and it was solved.
@tbaker294

Also; I have the keyless version. Even though the manual states the bike comes with 2 keys; it is actually 1 fob and 1 emergency key. I personally thought the dealership was trying to pull a fast one; but verified it to be the case (1 fob, 1 emergency key).

Gday Mark, yes I’m also a big Goldwing fan (the 1800 six) and have many an hour riding one. I think what grabbed me with the big Beemer is the massive power of the awesome in line 6 and the ability to still put up a good fight with my younger counterparts on a track day or blast through the windy twisties. As far as reliability goes I hope your wrong but fear your right if that makes sense, the stable has three Beemers in it nowadays (GS-RT & the K ) , so far so good but time will tell. I have to say after almost 50 years of riding Japanese bikes I’ve developed a healthy respect for their build quality & reliability, let’s hope the Deutschland machines can give ma a similar run, glad you enjoyed the video mate. I am on my 3rd BMW motorcycle in 15 years and I have never had any issues. All I have had is regular maintenance - oil & tire changes. Gold Wing owners like to perpetuate the myth that BMW bikes are prone to breakdown but that has not been my experience. I will say that that BMW bikes I have owned are thrilling rides. Gold Wings are lacking character. The K1600 engine is a marvel of technology. It sounds like an F1 engine above 7000 RPM. However, if you want to toodle along the freeway slab, the Gold Wing is the bike for you. For myself, I want a bike that lights my hair on fire in the twisties. The K1600 does that for me.

Gday Frank, I think about 45000kms (28000 miles) without checking the books. I love it, it’s one of the few bikes I’ve owned that I go for a ride not to go somewhere but just for the sake of riding it. She’s the first 6cyl bike I’ve owned (have ridden many others but they haven’t tempted me to buy them) and I think it’s a combination of that beautiful smooth 6 but with all the added comfort & features BMW have put into it that make it a truly wonderful riding experience. Caveat it’s heavy, this makes it incredibly nice on the road but tricky to move around at home if you’ve got undulating surfaces. When your out and about you just park accordingly of course, I’m not sure the K1600 really has any peer’s when it comes to it’s versatility to become four bikes essentially. A fantastic long distance touring bike, a weekend warrior sports bike (albeit a heavy one) a Sunday bagger and big city commuter. You’ll notice I left out trail bike, only a dope would take it off rd. Good luck with your purchase, let me know how you go. Cheers.

Gday Sander, glad you enjoyed the video. Scotland in August, what a great time temperature wise to tour. It may be wet however so I always have a minimum two pairs of gloves, one to wear while the other is drying. A fully loaded K1600 can be a bit of work getting on the center stand sometimes so I’d suggest a foot extender for the side stand, it just gives it a bit more surface area if your using it on softer surfaces. The big Beemer has tubeless tyres so a plug kit and mini compressor would be handy thing to throw onboard also. You have tyre pressure sensors on the K1600 so you can usually catch it before it breaks the bead. Apart from that descent wet weather attire and all the obvious safety gear and I recon you’ll hav a blast, I’m very jealous.👍 Cheers.

Hi, there is a video on RU-vid that I used to do exactly this, I will try to find it and send it to you. The Bluetooth I use is the Sena system in my Shoei Neotec 2 helmet, the intercom system is great. it allows you to talk to your passenger and also fellow riders (if they also have that system) with excellent clarity & battery life. The stereo system is in my opinion really not that good on the bike and in my case anyway I prefer to use the phone if listening to the radio. The nav in your bike being a 12 will probably need updating to have the latest maps etc but once again the phone is probably easier (it’s always up to date). Ride safe, they are a wonderful machine.
