DIY / How to remove and re-install the front wheel on a 2017 BMW R Nine T Scrambler. This procedure should also work for the Urban G/S, Racer, and Pure variants with the same fork setup (non Upside Down Forks) 2014 to 2018 models.
Tools needed:
- Torque Wrench
- Torx T30, T40, T50 bits
- 12mm Hex bit
- 22mm Hex - I used this one from Amazon
www.amazon.com...
- Rear Bike Stand
- Standard Floor Jack
My info comes from the Haynes Manual. This video elaborates on a few steps that were left out and tries to show what their photos can't show in detail.
REMOVAL
1. Start by centering the bike with a rear stand. I use the ABBA superbike stand. Stick a tennis ball between your right grip and brake lever. Secure it with rubber bands. This will prevent you or someone from accidentally squeezing the brake lever.
2. Locate the ABS/wheel speed sensor and brake caliper bolts on the left fork. Unbolt them and hang the caliper from the header or frame with bungees or straps. Don't let the calipers hang by the brake lines. Do the same for the right side caliper.
3. Locate the axle clamp bolts. There are two at the bottom of each fork. Loosen them. Don't need to remove them.
4. Locate the axle bolt at the bottom of the left fork. This is a 12mm hex. The right fork is where you'll withdraw the axle and has a 22mm hex. Hold the 22mm hex while turning the 12mm to loosen the axle bolt.
5. With everything loosened up, jack up the front of the bike using a standard floor jack. You can do this by jacking up at the oil pan. Use some wood blocking to protect the pan. You only need the wheel off the ground a little bit.
6. Screw the axle bolt in by a few threads then push the axle out. Unscrew the axle bolt and get ready to withdraw the axle. Lift and support the wheel with one hand while withdrawing the axle with the other hand. Set the wheel down gently so as not to scratch your forks with the rotors.
7. Store the wheel upright or on blocks. Don't lay the wheel down on the rotors.
RE-INSTALLATION
1. Wipe and clean off the bearing seals on each side of the wheel. Wipe and clean off the axle and spacer.
2. Lubricate the axle, spacer, and bearing seals with new grease. Optimoly TA or lithium-based grease.
3. Reinstall the spacer and maneuver the wheel between the forks. Lift up the wheel and insert the axle from the right side. Be sure that your wheel speed sensor ring is on the left side of the wheel.
4. Tighten up the axle bolt to 37 ft-lb (50 Nm)
5. Reinstall the left brake caliper and wheel speed sensor. Torque the caliper bolts to 28 ft-lb (38 Nm). Tighten the bolt holding the sensor to (EDIT: 8 Nm, 6 ft-lb).
6.Reinstall the right caliper. Same torque as the left, 28 ft-lb (38 Nm).
7. With the calipers installed, squeeze the brake lever to re-align the rotors, calipers, and wheel. Tighten the axle clamp bolts, alternating from one side to the other to minimize offset.Torque them to 14 ft-lb (19Nm)
Finished!

I change my tyres myself, your clip is excellent in clarity and technical info, job well done!

Thank you. I changed my tires myself as well. We have a local community DIY motorcycle garage called Moto Republic that has a tire machine for installing and removing tires. I take the wheels off and take them to the garage in my car to change my tires.

According to BMW RSD (092017): "Wheel-speed sensor, front, to telescopic forks" (M6 x 20) torque should be 8Nm

Enjoyed your very detailed video from Perth Australia! Keep up the good work! Im swapping out my cast wheels to an aftermatket spoked Alpina wheels. What are the torques setting for the front brake discs mounting bolts and the abs ring?

@jamalhassan1284 Front brake disc torque settings are 19Nm. Remember to use blue loctite or new BMW bolts for mounting. The bolts have encapsulated loctite. I don't have the speed sensor ring torque specs but I would imagine it's around 8 Nm. Thanks for checking out the video.

Thanks for the video, how did you find the TK70s on the road for fast riding?

Hi Georgina, I find the TKC70 tires to be great on the road. I feel very confident with their traction. Awhile back, I test rode a Scrambler with Karoo 3 tires and disliked the knobby feeling and road noise. The TKC70 don't feel as knobby and are much quieter too. Thanks for watching the video!

Thanks for checking out the video. The repair manual is by Haynes and can be purchased from Amazon or other retailers. Do a search for "Haynes R Nine T manual". Good luck!
