This is a DIY how-to on performing the final drive gear oil change on a 2017 BMW R Nine T Scrambler. This video is also relevant to the 2014 to 2018 variant models - The Classic, Pure, Racer, and Urban G/S. Part of the 12,000 mile service.
Tools:
- Bike stand
abbastandsusa.... (call/email them and ask for the R Nine T fittings)
- Torque wrench with an extension
- T45 and T50 Torx bits
- Long Torx bits. For this procedure, T40
- 180 mL of Synthetic Gear Oil

1. Before changing the fluid, go for a ride to get the final drive fluid warmed up. A 15-20 minute ride should do. The fluid will drain out more fully when it's warm.
2. Get your bike up on a stand and your rear wheel off the ground. If your bike is in neutral, move the shifter up to second gear to keep the wheel from turning.
3. Loosen the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. You don't need to deflate the tires or remove the mufflers with the exception of the Nine T classic. Go slow and easy so that you don't slam any metal together.
4. If the final drive fluid fill plug is behind the wheel carrier, squeeze the clutch in, grab the rear brake rotor and rotate it until there's clear access to the plug.
5. Unbolt the plug to vent the final drive while it drains. There wasn't enough clearance for me to use a standard Torx bit here but I have the long torx set which provides enough clearance. Used a T40 here.
6. Position your oil catch under the drain plug and get ready to unbolt it. Used the T45 Torx here.
7. As it's draining, take a look at your final drive drain plug. It's magnetic. It will catch any metal particles that develop from within the final drive. Clean out any metal sludge and hit it with some compressed air.
8. Install a new O-ring on the drain plug. After all the oil drains out, re-install the drain plug and torque it to 20Nm or 14.75 ft. lb.
9. The final drive's recommended oil capacity is 180 mL. Using the 100mL syringe, withdraw a full 100mL on the first pass, then 80mL on the second pass.
10. Install a new copper sealing washer on the filler plug. This washer gets crushed to form a tight seal each time you tighten the bolt. So you have to replace it every time. Tighten and torque this to 20 Nm or 14.75 ft. lb.
Wipe up any spilled oil around the filler.
11. Before re-installing the rear wheel, hit the wheel bolts with some WD-40 to prevent rust and the bolts from seizing onto the wheel carrier.
12. Clean up the areas of the wheel and wheel carrier where they make contact and finger tighten the bolts on. Be cautious here as the wheel will slip off periodically as you screw the bolts in.
13. Set your torque wrench to a low setting like 10 ft. lb. Tighten them down in a criss-cross pattern.
14. Now set your torque wrench to 60 Nm or 44.25 ft. lb. and tighten all the bolts again in a criss-cross pattern.
