Yes they are resonation chambers so they are empty.

Yes there are formulas to figure it out. These pipes slid in and out of each other so you could fine tune it. Also this is a v6 engine so they are more like x pipes. This way you have to run two. Typically it's also better to have them closer to the exit or mufflers.

I have an MR2 mk3, currently running a decat Toyosport manifold, generic sports cat and a flowmaster delta 40 muffler. Since fitting the sports cat, there is a lot of resonance and drone around 2200 to 3k. If you pull on the throttle cable whilst looking in the engine bay you can see the whole exhaust vibrates a hell of a lot at those rpm. I'm going to make a branch resonator up. From my calculations and at about 85hertz, the pipe needs to be around 40 inches long. Obviously that's pretty big for a small engine bay so it will need to double back on itself. It would not be near as effective. It would help, but the mufflers will help if they have an internal chamber. These chambers are very effective way to cancel out the resonance. Never hurts to try something though. Only good way to find out for sure!

@@Black240SXDrift TY for the response, mine has Gibson mufflers, the rest of exhaust is OE, the resonance was there as soon as I hit the highway, driving 75+ lessens it but I’m not always able to go those speeds so I’m looking for alternatives. Again thanks for the tips and vid.

No it did not change the overall sound of the exhaust the only thing it stopped was the resignation inside the cabin. So the car still sounded the same, but didn't make your brain rattle anymore.

You would topically put them in front of the mufflers, but since yours are forward, you could attempt it in the rear. It souks still help, but I haven't ever done any behind mufflers

@@Black240SXDrift does it change to the tone? Because I love how my exhaust sound, I don't want the tone change. It's ok In local but highway it's too much LOL

@@stingah it might change it slightly, but shouldn't be drastic.

No. It's a side chamber for resonance out of the flow path. Purely for frequency alteration to avoid resonance.

These were just tubes. Not sure the weight, but a 2-3lbs at most

Previous owner did some exhaust shop deal. Drone made the car undrivable.

The j pipes will just reduce drone. You would need to change mufflers or exhaust system to change the sound.

Same concept, both work. The benefit to these is you can adjust them to the car where as the mid pipe typically needs to be tuned to the engine and exhaust.

Absolutely a good exhaust is the way to go, but this is a scientific fix for drone. It's called a helmholtz resonance chamber and is a common fix for resonance issues. As a former automotive nvh engineer, this is used in many places to reduce noise and resonance in factory vehicles. Primarily on your intake. All of those weird chambers coming off the intake tube on modern vehicles are the same concept. If you look into the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineering) NVH classes, this is a topic covered as well. It's a scientific principle at work here, not just some tubes sticking out randomly. V6 engines tend to drone really bad, and a lot of very well engineered aftermarket exhaust systems have these chambers to help reduce this phenomenon. This exhaust was on the car when he bought it, and this was a much more affordable fix than a resonance tuned full exhaust system.

These were adjustable. I don't remember the final length we settled on.
