The GTR is like 10 years old with minor changes lol. Having 600hp and AWD is no big deal now. Even an F Type SVR is only 25hp short of that mark. I'm actually surprised Chevy hasn't made an AWD Corvette yet.
"I hate how the Grand Sport doesn't have a mode where you can control the car better, however I put the car in the mode where you can control it better (which is included from factory) and it handled magnificently. It's just uncontrollable, even though I was able to pilot this car faster than almost any other contrary to it's low comparatively low horsepower. All-in-all, it's a fantastic car that I love to drive but I hate driving it and it's a terrible car." - every Motor Trend Corvette video since the Z06 head-to-head
So the 570s GT did a 1:34.87, the Nismo did a 1:35.01 and this did a 1:35.62. Not to shabby for having a manual trans and being down a solid 100hp on the Mclaren.
The Perf traction mgmt can be accessed while the suspension is in sport. the trick is to go to the driver info center in the radio display, go to settings, and you can independently adjust the suspension exhaust and steering modes from one another... so you can have the car in track, with ptm engaged, while independently having the suspension in sport, tour etc. in the future MT, please learn to fully understand the cars you're critiquing, before doing so..
Angelo F that's what I said early...or in track mode you can adjust in the menu or just put the ptm to dry 1 or dry 2 vs full out race if it's a handful
Been looking around on the Grand Sport w/ Z07 and haven't seen the ability to change suspension settings independent of the main driving mode. The only independent options I see are steering and exhaust modes. Would love to see where you saw this as I'd love to use it.
@@Basketballerphx The PTM modes do not adjust suspension settings, only active handling and traction control amounts. AFAIK, the only way to put the car into sport suspension is to put it in sport mode. Since you can't use PTM in sport mode (only "competitive driving mode"), it would make MotorTrend's gripe valid.
INSIDER information, the Grand Sport ran early in the morning when the track was cold and damp. Hmmm maybe this contributed to the lack of traction at speed???
The road test and personal opinion are what MT uses Most to make their placement decisions. Just look at the Gt350R vs. Zl-1 video.....ZL-1 Crushes the Shelby performance wise BUT they choose the GT350R the winner...mainly because of the sound, LOL.
It's not just about performance or time....the r8 Plus beat the 570s Last year in the drag race AND on the track...but R8 plus got 7th place and the 570s got 1st??? Go figure.
I notice when Randy isn't chatty and waving his hands around it's because; A. He has his hands full. And; B. He's focused. This is my favorite corvette, and I wish like everyone else it had another 100hp N/A.
I too wish they at least made it 505 HP na engine like the ls7 in the z28/previous z06 c6. But... I can hang with and pass most supercars at every track day I've done..
daniel PC/ Xbox If you have ever driven in any N/A car making 400-500hp, you'd understand what I'm talking about. 500-550 for the grandsport is an excellent compromise considering it's suspension and brake package.
Well done using the base engine clad GS in this shootout among +600hp exotics AND A CAMARO WITH THE NEW ZO6's motor... and review it giving poor marks for lack of power? Does that remind you of picking on somebody's little brother when the big brother wasn't invited? #carpolitics
I agree that this brilliant car deserves to be ahead of the GT-R. The LC500 doesn't. This is the *2017 Best Driver's Car* competition, NOT *2017 Best poser Car* competition.
I agree with MT. The GS needs 500 plus HP. IF I where buying a corvette I would buy the GS and have cam and long tube headers installed with cold air intake and tube. That should be in the 500 plus range and be a awesome N/A corvette
I honestly expected the Grand Sport to do a little better, both in the standings and in lap time. Many articles have sighted the GS as being the best drivers Corvette, and it beat last years BDC 3rd place finisher in a H2H. And given the old 500hp Z06 managed a 1:34.43 here on Laguna Seca, I expected this to run closer to that lap time. I suppose MT couldn't have more than one Chevy in the top finishers lest the Euro fanboys would overflow with rage.
Adam S Laguna is a track where power and downforce make a massive difference. The GS has the downforce part down, it just doesn't make as much power as it should.
Jonny Lieberman - to be fair, when the Camaro Z/28 won a few years ago, the Euro fan boys were frothing at the mouth. But yes, I understand you guys do your best to not be bias. I just tend to prioritize manuals as one of the biggest factors in a good drivers car...which would displace many of these European supercars to lower rankings.
Europoors always froth and simmer when I mention the Corvette super sports car and its ability to completely, utterly destroy Ferraris and Lamborghinis.
Lion Heart - what are you on about? A Grand Sport with a supercharger IS a Z06. The point is the C7 GS has bested the old N/A C6 Z06 on a few other tracks...it's too bad it didn't here. And why are you bringing up Nurburgring times? I have no idea why GM didn't publish the Z06 lap time. But they did show the ZL1 1LE...and it's fast. And LH, don't forget to mention you're a BMW fanboy. I don't even own a GM car, I just call it like I see it. And how I see it is odd. How did the slower, automatic only, understeering RC500 rank above this Grand Sport as a "drivers" car? That right there doesn't make sense.
This car should have been given a horsepower bump, it shouldn't have the same power as the base car, should have been somewhere between the base and the Z06 to at least make it a little more special.
Escape for Mankind is Keith Johnson if you look at the rear wheel hp of this car and a c6 z06 the numbers aren't far off so having a 7.0 wouldn't change really anything. Add some long tube headers and a tune to the Grand Sport and it out performs the 7.0
They did, there is a special edition Shadow Grand Sport this year. Only 200 or so were made, basically a fully loaded zo6 grand sport sporting a 1 off paint job and livery. You can expect that 1 to be $120k+ if any are even left.
Try to lap faster than Randy, you arrogant imbecile. He set and broken the record multiple times on this track. After only half a day with the ZL1, he managed to get a better lap at Area 27 than Bill Wise, who set the infamous Nürburgring lap time in the ZL1 1LE.
General Motors really missed an opportunity. They could've stroked the original 6.2L to a 7.0L to make it a little more special than the entry-level Stingray and the over-the-top Z06. I can see an engine like that making 550-ish horsepower and lb.-ft. of torque. Hell, that could-have-been 7.0L could be used in the rumored Camaro Z/28.
MOTOR TREND! STOP! Literaly all these videos are is Johnny saying "Great car, and I won't point out any legitimate flaws, but Ima put it dead fucking last."
When has Viper "shit on Vette's"???? ACR's crushes in lap-times...but every other comparison test or shoot outs have been close or bested by Vette's. Randy Post always bags on Vette's, but somehow finds a way to run top lap times hhhhhhm! I lost a lot of respect for MT back in 13' Head to Head ZR1 vs 13' Viper.
"When has Viper "shit on Vette's"????"...Pretty much Since the Viper came out in 1992. That GTS vs. Zr-1 was BS...They even said the GTs was a Pre-production model. Also MT only ever tests the Z06 with Z07 package....They never test a NON-Z07 Z06 against the GTS, etc. which are on street tires. If they did the GTS would easily Out run the Michlein Supersport tired Z06 in a straigt-line.
In 92'....Viper hit the streets with 100hp more than Vettes... Corvette slowly played catch years following...but the technology in areas such and handling braking narrowed the gap. Head to heads and comparison test won by Vette's were based on overall drive ability, and the huge difference in price. Vipers were fast but they didn't produce a big enough gap overall to win most competitions. ACR was on another level, and Corvette never offered and extreme option as such.(maybe it's coming soon) .The Z07 Z06 has that wicker bill spoiler that slows it down, and weighs 3,524 lbs..compared to Vipers GTS 3,415 lbs. I agree with Marcos Rodriguez about MT and the hate they show Corvette...especially Randy Pobst...that guy is scared to death of Corvettes. He never drives them in their top performance settings..go back and read all his test ..something is always wrong.. He admits he could get more out of it,but something holds him back.
I never said it was the same price....I just said it's been kicking it's ass. Compared to ferrari's and porsches the Viper has always been a steal. Also the Viper has always been hand-built and the Last few Viper have uses ALOT more exotic materials...which drive up price. Even when teh LS6 had 405hp and the Viper had 450hp...the Z06 didn't stand a chance. .You can't blame Dodge because Chevy Rarely brought enough to the fight. The same way Ford Mustang fans Cry about the 5.0L displacement vs. the 6.2L LT-1....Chevy didn't FORCE FORD to use that engine/design. I grew up like Corvettes...still have a poster...But I'm NOT a Delusional Fanboy and when they do a piss poor job...I call out EVERY brand/model. Sure the GT-R is fast off the line but sucks ass on a track....just like the Telsa. I love the Koenigseggs but they TOO are better in top end/highway racing than off the line or on a track. Randy LOVED the Zr-1...it's just that the C7 isn't as well designed.....it's not just him that points out that it's "Not Finished". Also the fact that it gained so much weight is unacceptable to me.
Shahid Rifai the Viper is dead because the Z06 is a much better car in basically every category. Same power out of a 6.2 Liter V8 than that 8.4 Liter V10. Cheaper maintenance. Almost $20k cheaper for the Vette. The only thing the Viper had was exclusivity.
Kristopher Klassen yeah, that's great and all, but then you realize the viper is completely useless on the road. The corvette can do both the track and the road very well. That is why it actually sells.
Idc about American cars but these american cars are nuts a demon beats a Chiron and its only like 100k and its a dodge the same company that produces the dart and minivans but American car company are trying way to hard to be the best look at Hennessy and dodge and chevy they are making there cars to fast to quick soon it's going to be so fast that the government limits the 60 time to only 2.0 and all cars will catch up after that a Prius in 50 years will do 60 in 2.0 sec so its important to take it slow
I'm going to go out on a limb and say the top two will be the Camaro ZL1 1LE and the AMG GT R (in any order). Actual guess is that the Porsche GT3 will be in 3rd.
This should easly be top three. I traded in my 2014 z06 with the z07 package for a brand new grand sport, and it is easily the nicest car ive ever driven. Ive driven in a bunch of newer german vehicles, and they simply no where near drive as nice as the gs. If it can beat an lfa and 458 and come up extremely close to a nismo gtr, this car should simply be recognized more. For the money, you cant complain. Such an amazing car in all areas.
Yea I got a 17 grand sport and I have driven most fast German cars.. I own mostly Mercedes Benz vehicles.. but the GS is amazing.. I passed on a Cayman gt4.. granted I guess that has too low horsepower now?
*The GS in no way competes with a 458 or an LFA.. Neither of those were designed for the same purpose that the GS was. Now if you mentioned the 458 Speciale and LFA Nurburgring..you might've actually made an accurate statement.*
Car journalist live in a dream world for us mortals a grand sport is an incredible car but against a 300k cars it is out classed but I will keep my C7 it is a well priced sports car with supercar performance luxury and quality
Great Lap time for ONLY 460hp. That's 0.62 slower than the 2017 NImso, only 0.12sec behind the 2015 Nismo...and 1.46sec Faster than the 2017 565hp GT-R. Only 1/2 sec faster than the GT350R Mustang. I also noticed the Tach....I didn't know they went ALL RETRO with that, Late 80's vettes had that tach. i.ytimg.com/vi/mq7TGy38ZoE/maxresdefault.jpg
he said a 550 hp grand sport would split the difference nicely between the 460 hp stingray and the 650 hp z06. but the car here is 460 hp but it's a grand sport. im confused
@@JerseyMikePas a ZL1 owner. The car is not better in all aspects. The grandsport handle better..... Same lap time as the ZL1 and it has 200 less hp. the GS also has better braking....For its size the Camaro is unbeatable tho.
You can have the softer suspension and PTM on at the same time. In fact, they have to know this if they even tried PTM since a menu pops up to ask which mode you want (I think sport 1 has the mid-level suspension setting Randy liked).
Cam + tuning and your in the 500 hp @ 6500+ rpms. The thing is GM should have done it from the factory. Guys are building 550 hp NA LS engines that are very reliable left and right nowadays so this is a very conservative move from Chevy.
Great lap time, but Randy is spot on with the handling characteristics comments. Doesn't put down power well! Needs different rear shocks or geometry changes... imagine if it put power down well? Would be #1
The only thing missing on the Grand Sport was a better powertrain like the one on the Z28 or the C6 Z06, which came with the 7.0 N.A. Engine and the 6 speed manual transmission or maybe the automatic transmission would have performed much better. The guys at M.T. were amazed with the handling and braking performance of the G.S. The only thing missing was 100 hp and a more accurate shifter.
That isn't entirely true. It never broke down, and even still managed a moderately decent lap time despite being in limp mode. The car it was later discovered had been running with the intercooler pump unplugged.
Call me crazy but I think this is the perfect amount of horsepower. Even if I had the money for a zo7 I would get the grand sport. Is has usable power. This car should have placed top 3.
$85K is wrong. That’s the 3LT package which adds $10k worth of leather to the interior. A nicely appointed GS 2LT has the same performance for $74K. And for that price, you won’t find anything faster around a track.
*_MotorTrend_** Host Nearly Killed In Audi R8 Crash Recounts Her Recovery* Aug 6, 2014 Last year _MotorTrend's_ video host Jessi Lang flew to Germany to test an extremely powerful tuned Abt Audi R8. She opened the car up on a local highway, and then her life nearly ended. A slow-moving car pulled into her lane while she and an Abt tuner riding in the passenger seat screamed down one of the country's well-surfaced arterial roads. Thanks to the car's big brakes, tough construction, and additional rollcage, Lang and her passenger survived. Her leg was so shattered bones broke through the skin and she spent a year bedridden, then wheelchair-bound, and then struggling through physical therapy. Lang describes the whole episode in this short film her crash, hospitalization, and physical therapy. It's rare to have a documentary account of a near-death car crash, from the lead-up and all the way through the recovery. That this all happened to a video host for one of RU-vid's most popular channels gives us the full account. It's a clearer sense of how brutally car crashes can tear up our bodies, and how difficult it is to return to some sense of normalcy. Lang was in what would have been one of the safest cars possible for that kind of crash, and she was equipped better than most for her recuperation, with an athlete's training in martial arts. That she had what was almost a best-case scenario makes the pain and work she went through all the more harrowing. jalopnik.com/motortrend-host-nearly-killed-in-autobahn-crash-recount-1617038676
For all the people who want the Grand Sport to have a motor with more power than the LT1 but less than the LT4 … Adding a 4'th engine would boost the cost of the GS. The GS uses the body of the Z06 and the motor of the Stingray. This does not increase its cost. If you were to add another motor, then you might as well just jump to the Z06 because it would boost the cost.
Listen to the shift @1:55 I don't think GM does a good job with the gear ratios in the Corvettes. They have 7 manual gears.. Go real real tall on 6th and 7th if ya want.. for some top speed record er whatever.. Keep the trackable gears at closer ratios. GM... Are you listening??
Hey, can you guys please do a Head to Head on the 2017 Chevy Corvette GrandSport vs 2017 Mercedes Benz C 63 S Coupe. I ask this because both fully spec are around the same price: $90,000.
So in the top 4 you will have a Cayman and 911... Surprise surprise.. I understand the Cayman but a 911 turbo?, And Ferrari... Vettes the bargain here.
I think it's low rank is due to the driver's personal preference to have all driver aids switched off and his aggression with the throttle. Power oversteer is going to be a thing if you do that.
Max Speedster if the car is difficult to handle with the driver's aids off it shows the flaws in the chassis set up. The computer having to fix it for you is disappointing as a race car driver.

@craigthescott5074 you would think, but GM switch up which models were supercharged. C6 z06 had c6 zr1 suspensions, tires, brakes etc. C7 z06 is not n/a like the previous z06, and it is now supercharged and replaces the c6 zr1. C7 GS has the C7 z06 suspension, tires, brakes etc. Z06 was never supercharged before, until 2015. And the zr1 was out of the picture until 2019.
