Hats off to Randy Pobst. 1:34.30 is literally the exact same lap time that he achieved with a different ZL1 1LE on Ignition Ep. 179. Talk about consistency.
Randy is pretty consistent, however I am thinking they simply used the BDC lap for that Ignition episode, as all of the BDC filming was done months ago.
If you tack on price tag's, that is some $ dollar cars that camaro and corvette are fighting it out with, nismo is 175grand, 570gt is 200grand, and amg starts at 157grand. Those 3 cars could easy be a bit more since not sure about spec's of them. camaro and corvette are what 80-90grand or so topped out. half price to even 1/3rd the just as much performance on track.
As a Camaro owner (2018 Camaro 2SS) it makes me proud seeing videos like these, I love it and it reminds me of why I chose Team Camaro over mustang or challenger, I love my Camaro!
@@lolyouwontfindme6070 yes thats pretty much a drag race but not from a dig but im referring to corners... they need that 1le package for them. My friend owns a 2019 camaro ss no 1le but its too soft. And cornering is not too great. Raw power is good thou.
Stormtrooper 2323 oh yea I get what u mean, well yea I guess I understand on a track the regular SS (without the 1LE package) sucks, but like I said I mostly street, well highway race (rolls only) and it’s pretty good and is faster than what you’d expect
Dear RU-vid, I made a mistake when I was recording the voice over for the lap videos involving this car, the Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE, and the AMG GT R. Our video team then made the mistake of trusting me, and the video went up containing an erroneous finishing order. 100% on me, it's my mistake, and I'm sorry that it happened. I 'll tell you a funny anecdote that maybe partially explains why (though not really, but hey, I feel bad). We close down highway 198 to evaluate all the contenders for Best Driver's Car. There's a certain spot where if you hit a certain bump just right, you can get the car on two wheels. Naturally, our photographers love it. As they should. So, a few of us went back with a few cars and spent the 30 final minutes of daylight being stunt drivers. I was in the AMG GT R. After the sun set and we were finished, we ran back down to the rest of the group and jumped in different cars to head off to dinner. I happened to hop in the ZL1 1LE. My buddy called me to ask how Best Driver's Car was going. Since I'd just spent all that time in the GT R, I started by telling him how great the AMG was. I then mentioned how I'm driving it as we're talking, it's so badass, etc. But then I came to a corner and had to slow down and shifted with the manual-shifter and it hit me: I'm actually in the Camaro! But the two cars are so close in character, temperament, and Alcantara steering wheels, that I got confused. My point, mistakes happen. We're all sorry it happened, and we're going to put better processes in place going forward to make sure it doesn't happen again. Once more: I'm sorry. Thanks, and thanks for watching, - Jonny -
Jonny is awesome . As I have said , one of the many reasons I continue my 20+ year subscription. Now , if I can only find a way to infiltrate and steal his job...
Amazing driver and imo the ZL1 1LE is already a classic man ! Amazing powertrain, brakes and suspension, way faster than it's price suggests ( in hands of pro drivers ofc ).
I've read and reviewed almost uncountable reviews of both the hot Camaro's and the 'Vette's and, in all of this research the ZL1/1LE is the better car in every single instance. From a pure performance perspective. This has been an eye opener for me. Especially considering the 'Vette is supposed to be the Halo car. And, considering the price difference. GM needs to introduce the Camaro Team to the Corvette Team. The former are outdoing the latter for far less price to the potential consumer. For many decades the 'Vette was the clear Bang for the Buck King of the Hill. Seems to me the Camaro has dethroned the former King in this category.
You know what I was thinking the same thing. And to be honest with you I really think that pretty much every automaker to date puts out pretty good-looking cars I don't think there's a bad looking car on the road. Even cars like Kia, Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, cars that aren't normally exiting looking actually look pretty dang good. I really don't think any of the new cars look bad
Unreal!! As a European car fan for years, I thought I'd never ever hear myself say I'd get a Camero over a M, AMG or RS car but this thing for the money is mind boggling. I just wish the interior was a little better.
The Problem is that you have to buy a luxury car...if you want a FAST european made car. They don't make fast RWD cars for the middle class..like the Pony cars and nissan Z.
With the money you save take $5k and go to a custom upholstery shop and tell them exactly what you want and pick your Camaro with your dream interior up in two or three weeks. Go for it!
Trevon Adams If it wasn’t for German/Japanese cars , American cars would still be complete garbage as they were for the last 40 years , they were going bankrupt because they made shit ,have some respect , Mercedes made the first car.. BTW I bought a 2002 Yukon for 50,000 back then , go see what it’s worth now! Dumbass !!!
Zero Cool Only the rotors and calipers depending on the manufacturer. Nissan brakes are only sourcing the rotors. There's way more to a brake system that determines how well it performs. pad compound, brake fluid, the computer ABS system, tires, brake lines, booster etc.
I bought a ZL1 here in Australia i proudly own the 2019 ZL1 of which there are only 300 in the country. CHEVROLET has done a amazing job with these cars and I smile every time those bald Eagles fire up! 🇦🇺🇺🇲🇦🇺🇺🇲🔥🔥🔥🔥
After taking a closer look at the ZL1 1LE. Its an absolute beast. Finely designed from the chassis to the frame to the all the components. The ZL1 is next level no question.
Lone Ranger Maybe a year or so till someone makes a better track car.. The point i was trying to make that muscle cars are outperforming high dollar import vehicles at a value... Basically im trying to say European cars are not as great as people make them out to be.. The proof is here..Yes i will gladly go deaf driving one of these beasts..
"Sure, but the question is how long it will last." The car will last 200k+ miles. Chevy actually has the most awards for Dependability of any brand. ALOT longer than a BMW, LOL.
Lone Ranger dnt bullshit anyone i life in germany and "premium" bmw m3 m4 never got more then 100 000 km garantie maxx and only if u pay for or just 50 000 km It always depends on how u drive it ;)
So awesome. Just met Johnny Lieberman in the canyons with my Camaro ZL1. He liked it but didn't like the video i showed him of me money shifting it lol.
This is the bargain of the century right here. Smoking supercars on the track for that price.... Extremely impressive. Bet some will still say lol US cars dont go around corners. Theyve caught the Euro brands QUICK
I'm a Ford guy, but I concede and tip my hat to Chevy's engineers. What a time to be alive. American car manufacturers are so competitive and doing so well rn.
Wow for 70 Grand you got yourself a supercar killer. Makes you wonder how the others overpriced their vehicles just because of brand name but people will still buy them.
They are different types of car. The other super cars are luxury performance sports cars. They tend to be much more exotic. What is special about this is that America can build fantastic cars that working people can afford.
I have been daily driving a 19 zl1 1le for about two weeks now. The suspension isn't actually thaaaaaat stiff. The thing that makes it a less than ideal daily in my opinion is how low the front splitter is. You really really have to pay attention driving this thing but honestly it makes it kinda fun that way.
Nothing wrong with forth when the other 3 cost twice to 5x as much or more and total production of the 3 combined will be less then the ZL1 1LE. The fact that we are comparing Camaro to a near half million dollar Ferrari with a total production of only 1200 cars says it all.
@Bare Knuckle the BMW M2 compétition is 85,000 dollars and has only 400 hp, also stop complaining, because if interior was better the car would cost 110,000 dollars.
@Bare Knuckle M4 competition only has 400 hp, also M4 isnt reliable, have fun with breaking components and 70K price repairs, also anyone pays 70K to win races, which is why sports cars are still for sale.
@Bare Knuckle Also, M4 is less reliable, there are V8 Corvettes at 700,000 miles, there are camaro’’s at 200,000 miles with cheap repairs and cheap maintenance, also M4 competition is 75K while having only 400 hp with a bad quality squeaky interior.
The 2019 ZL1 1LE is now offered with the fast shifting 10 speed auto! It would be interesting to see how much faster Randy can go on the same track with the auto compared to the manual if at all! Do it!
@@covector4787 The GM A10 sometimes overheat on track and fails to produce consistent lap time gains, so no, the automatic transmission is not better for this car under serious track use. Porsche's PDK is a different story altogether
Unintentionally funny: "Then you have the specially-developed tires from Goodyear, that provide tremendous amounts of grip..." + *editor inserts shot of massive oversteer*
@@HitmanNK the ZL1 1LE is a 6 speed manual and the GTR Nismo has a 7 speed dual clutch transmission so course on certain tracks it'll have the advantage due to the dual clutch transmission.
On Nürburgring GTR is faster than Camaro by 8 seconds, but still one cost 150k the other 70k. You must take note that gtr lap has been made in 2013 so with an older version of gtr. Test are pretty reliable
The 5th Gen Camaro SS was a major fail: 400+hp and could barely outperform an 8+ year old 325hp 4th Gen Camaro SS. smh. Don't understand why the 5th Gen got so fat compared to the lightweight F-Bodys.
They're not Corvette engines, they're Chevrolet engines that have been made for years. Besides, the Mustangs take the 5.0 from the F150 and still get beat.
It's sad that this didn't make it into the top 3. That leaves two Porsches, one of which sounds like crap, and the other is hugely expensive and probably automatic, and also the Ferrari.
the company this car is in is pretty amazing. Funny how you kinda have to keep apologizing because its a camaro but its pretty incredible what they have been able to do with this car.
Actually, you will probably get it, for 73k out the door. I played hell trying to find my 2017 A10 ZL1. All the dealers within 300 miles of San Antonio had allocations reserved. I finally found one, and they gave me a 5k military discount to boot. Of course after gas guzzler, and state tax, the price was back up to the 69k sticker. Stopped by a dealer to pick up some gear oil a couple days ago, and they had two six speed manuals sitting there. One for 59k, and another, for 63k brand new in the box.
Tests a track car on a track to find the best lap times; complains about stiff suspension. really , if you're looking for comfort unclick the 1LE option box. I find it annoying when someone who reviews a car complains about something that is optional when the option to fix what they are complaining about is not only available but also the reason for the car being so good in the first place. IDK im just ranting. but really. the damn car is in the top fastest production cars available and is number one fastest production car under 100k of course it rides like a shopping cart.
Finally an American car with good handling. I really like American muscle cars, I think they look really cool. But the problem with them is that most of them have bad handling compared to European and Japanese cars. But this one is just.. thumbs up! The best American muscle ever! A good way if they want this car to reach European and Japan market. Oh btw, it might be faster than McLaren P1 because Laguna Seca is a short circuit that doesn't give P1 the chance to generate its' power. Try them on longer faster circuits and the P1 will win. Also, McLaren P1 *GTR* is faster than this Camaro for sure.
The Camaro SS can keep up with the M4 in the corners. The Corvettes been throwing blows at the 911 since the late 80s. The americans have had their stuff together since the late 90s.
When you say they had bad handling vs eur cars. Thing is when eur makes a car price is no limit on which they build it. Here in America they kinda have to build it within a budget so it will sell enough to justify the costs to design and make it.
Depends on what you want to do with the car. Sure this is a much better track car....but isn't a better daily driver or straight-line performer. I really need to see MT test the new Widebody hellcat...that would be the one I'd get...if I only had one car to drive all the time.
No one wants to drive in a straight line unless you're pushing around 2k HP. Any lower is a joke now a days. Dodge can keep their drag car on "slicks". That shit is gay.
JerseyMikeP This car performs just as good as the hellcat in straight line and it's a beast on the track. Dodge is still living the 50s and 60s when drag race was popular. People don't really care about drag race anymore, they track their cars.
When you always here from reviewers that you will never get near the limits of the car on the street, most of them won't come near the limits of most the cars even on a track. I wonder how far Randy pushes all the car's limits he drives. 8/10 - 9/10 - 10/10?
I've seen on other RU-vid pages where they Hire a Current Racing driver "Superstar" and they are slower than randy's time on the same track in the same car.
Kinda sad that the only cars that could manage to beat this in this competition cost at least 120k more, and all of the time was likely eaten by the h pattern, I mean I love driving a stick shift it's a way better experience but, it does cost time on a track and i'm fairly certain that had this been a dual clutch or auto it would have beaten the AMG and the turbo S the 488 is a bit of a bigger gap but who knows if the tranny was good enough maybe
Who even doubted in this Ferrari. It deserves the first place, not because it's a Ferrari but because it's the best drivers car in this group! Best chassis and steering, wonderfull engine and it even sounds amazing for a turbo engine.
KInda disappointing lap time considering it has 650hp, so much downforce aero bits on it, incredibly wide tires (wider in front than some sports cars have in rear) with super sticky compounds, very stiff suspension and overall track focused car.
All that aero and ONLY 300lbs @ 155mph?? Jonny do you MEAN 150mph? Which is the standard speed used by US Downforce readings. You'd think it would be on the same level(have more downforce) as a GT3RS. This 1LE Zl-1 has less downforce than the Nismo GTR, 458 Italia, and only 22lbs more than the Viper T/A 1.0?
