2017 Chevy Bolt EV: 4th Set of Tires at 171,000 Miles

I just installed my fourth set of tires on my Chevy Bolt EV, and wouldn't you know it, I went back to the original Michelin Energy Saver A/S. These continue to be the most efficient tire option, and I have no complaints about them overall. The previous Continental Pure Contact started leaking air with no obvious punctures; otherwise, they would have had enough tread to last another couple thousand miles.

If that is your 4th set then you have only used 3 sets to get 171,000 miles since the new set has not been used yet. That means you are getting around 57,000 miles per set. That is remarkable on an EV.

Hi, another original 2017 owner here. Think that I bought the first Bolt sold east of the Mississippi back in Feb. '17. 130,000+ miles now. Similar experience with he PureContacts. I got 70K on the OEM Michelins. Went to the PureContacts and realized that 5% drop in efficiency and the handling and traction was only slightly improved subjectively. I run the Michelin XICE-3 in the winter and get better efficiency with the snow tires in the colder weather than I do with the PureContacts in the summer. Can't wait 'till I can get back on the AS Energy Savers, truly the gold standard for efficiency to the general public.

I have a 2017 Bolt EV Premier actually same color as yours. I have been following your channel since you started with the Bolt EV starting with the flat tire. I purchased mine in September 2017. I still love it. I don’t do the kind of long distance driving you have in the past. With the combination of retiring and COVID years my mileage is fairly low , just under 50K. My battery was replaced as part of the recall in March 2022. I had to replace my Michelins at 36K due to low grip in heavy rain conditions. I still choose the same tire for my second set and no complaints. I plan on keeping mine at least eight years and might past it on to the grandkids. If the Ultium platform proves to be great, I’ll likely follow up with a 2025 Blazer EV or Equinox EV. For now the Bolt EV is my main vehicle. Keep up the reports.😊

Thank you for following all this time. Somehow, I can't find that original footage with the blowout (I was going to reference it here). I also haven't been driving as much thanks to work from home, but that might be changing soon. The Bolt EV is also coming back as an Ultium platform with LFP batteries, so I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on both it and the Equinox EV. I think the Blazer EV is stylish, but it's priced beyond my budget. I'll still try to get one to review.

@@rp9674 I don’t like the idea of eliminating Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. I don’t want my data sitting in my vehicle for a nosy valet or service person to access. I have no idea what kind of safeguards will be in place. It looks like another data grab by GM unfortunately. I like the idea of having Android Automotive in the car for the Navigation app to have access to actual vehicle status (real-time power consumption etc.) for next charging stop and help with preconditioning before a charging stop. Since the Cadillac Lyriq has Android Automotive as well as Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. I hope Chevy will change their position and provide both apps later after protests from the user community. If they don’t it may be a deal breaker for me.

@@newscoulomb3705 I miss those great road trip videos, they're fun to watch on a Saturday morning with a cup of coffee. I bought my Bolt in early 2021 after researching people's experiences, including yours. While I would love longer driving range and faster charging for the many road trips that I take, the reliability of this vehicle and low cost per mile to operate is second to none, which I'm very happy about. Also, thanks to this channel I've learned about how to charge optimally. 👍 That said, if they ever make it to market with the reasonably priced Equinox EV I'll jump at the chance for AWD, more range, and faster charging without breaking the bank.

That is pretty good tire mileage for any car. Just did a oil change on a 2019 Dodge Journey an noticed the tires were nearly bald at just 36k miles, all 4 were pretty evenly worn so it didn't look like an alignment issue. I mentioned it when he got the car back and said he knew and would buy tires soon. Our Ioniq 5 has nearly as many miles at 34k and they look great, should get 45-50k on the original set.

I'm still on the stock tires on my Bolt (28,000km) and I've been quite happy with them. I see complaints online all the time from people saying they're terrible (for grip mostly), but I have found the grip to be just fine in all conditions, and as you say the efficiency is excellent and so far they're wearing really well.

Great videos and very informative. You really helped me with my research on the z Bolt. I ended up buying a 2023 Bolt EUV Premier last week. I drove it from Long Beach to Placerville. I only charged it twice. I was averaging 4.1 khw. I then drove west to Willits on hwy 20. I'll be driving back to Long Beach tomorrow. It sounds like the sidewall materials had met the limit of their designed stress cycles. Sidewall material integrity failure is more hazardous than tread wear, because the tire will just slip off the rim.

Pretty good going for the amount of Interstate driving your Bolt has done over the years. We got 38,000 out of our first set on the Ioniq 5, which were also Michelins (Primacy all-season). The second set are Continentals and are supposed to be a bit harder-wearing, but we'll see how they go through to 75K and, hopefully, some way beyond. We're adding an extra 1,000 lbs or o and an extra motor over the Bolt, though, so no great surprise that it needs new boots more quickly.

I'm half on my first set of tires with 36,000 miles. I don't count the craptacular Michelin "self sealing" (in extremely limited circumstances) tires that my car came with my car because I replaced those after just ~500 miles. Replaced them with Kumho Ecsta PS31 (summer tires) and those were going well until this spring when I damaged one tire (sidewall bulge) on a nasty pothole. Ended up replacing two of them with two more PS31s at that time because they were more than 50% worn. I'll probably replace the other two some time in the next 18 months. I do drive my tires down to the wear bars but I don't want to let them get bald. I wish that there were energy saving/eco focused/LRR summer tires but I haven't found any. I estimate I take about a 10% efficiency hit running these tires but in exchange I get MUCH MUCH better wet and dry traction plus lower road noise compared to the Michelins. I think that one of the tradeoffs you get with energy saving tires is they are less durable thanks to thinner (weaker) sidewalls which makes the tires lighter. Not that regular tires are immune to damage from road hazards as I found out but I do believe that in general they are going to be more durable.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 8 месяцев назад
Yes. I had that blowout in the first couple hundred miles on my Bolt EV after hitting a rock. The entire sidewall ripped open, but to your point, that might have happened on other tires as well. Plus, most of my miles are on California highways, so the additional performance and traction might not be a huge benefit to me.

Hi Eric - my 2017 Premier has 101k miles on it currently. I really like the Michelin tires that came with the Bolts, despite their tendency to slip rather easily, and I attribute much of that to the torque available at a stop in this car. I’m about halfway through the 2nd full set, with 2 of the originals making it to 77k miles, so they do give a long life. I did have a valve stem leak on one of the tires that were pulled off at 77k, since the problem continued into the new tire, but was later fixed. We have an occasional stiff steering (rack), and the HV battery was replaced. Sticky calipers caused me to update the brakes at about 94k miles. Otherwise, it’s still a great little runabout, with no end in sight for our usage.

I've been wondering if the brakes need an occasional lubrication of moving parts Kama obviously not pads and rotors

Since you are at EVgo - they told me in writing last week that all their chargers under 200kW that were capable of simultaneous charging are in the process of being converted to one car at a time. Guess our Leaf will no longer be sharing 100kW Deltas with Bolts. I don't know how much this matters, since there usually is not enough parking for 2 cars to share, but it was handy when adjacent dispensers were down. I will never buy another set of Continentals - poor warranty service even with full dealer support for defect case.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 8 месяцев назад
Oh, interesting. Thanks for the update. As you noted, it's probably not a huge deal because they typically only allocate one parking stall per 100 kW dispenser, but it was nice to have the option. This particular site would benefit by replacing the two 50 kW with two 100 kW and using the other two spaces for a split-power 350 kW. Hopefully, they consider doing that. As for the Continentals, these were my second set. The ones on the Volt seem to still be holding up fine, but I hardly drive the Volt anymore.

Thanks. Yes, I think they would do well with that, but I've always kept a patch kit in the car. Anything the goo would stop I could fix with a patch kit, so I feel like the goo is a bit redundant. When I had a blowout, none of that really mattered, and only a spare would have worked in that situation.

I just replaced my tires on my 2017 Bolt Premier a few days ago! Got a Walmart black friday special for $75/tire on Reliant Goodyear tires. These are my second set replaced at 54k miles (could of gone a little further on old tires but wanted the sale price). I don't think they are quite as efficient as my original stock tires. However on the stocks if I took a corner too fast/sharp or accelerated to fast they would squeal/slip. My goodyear tires are very "sticky" and grip really well. I can corner, and accelerate way better than the stock tires. Though not as efficient, they hold the car to the road much better. Other than the price, I also feel a little safer in these, and can have more fun.... ;)

my take.... tires have one main function and that is to let a vehicle roll on down the road. plenty of factors go into that rolling. BUT that is the primary function. so i weighed in cost, rolling resistance, tread thickness (longevity), temp rating and traction (also plays big part in longevity). my findings are that lower cost tires with good tread thickness and lower traction rating (B is good enough) by far in the end will save me more money than buying expensive EV tires. Sure in an emergency if i have to slam on brakes it might take an extra 20 feet to stop. I avoid those emergencies by situational awareness. leave early or on time when going somewhere and you too will see you can drive normal(saving more juice to keep you rolling longer). in nut shell, drive normal, get good lasting inexpensive tires and you will save $$ for that freaking latte.
