I had a Chrysler mini van years ago and I have a Sienna now. While the Chrysler was comfortable with excellent interior design, I started to have electrical and mechanical problems after the second year. But the very last thing that made me never touch a Chrysler again was a total breakdown of the transmission right before 40K miles and out of warranty. I bought a Sienna since. The only repair I had on Sienna was a hairline crack of radiator after 10 years of use. I don't care if Chrysler is faster, bigger, or cheaper. All these can't compensate the hassle and expenses of lack of reliability.

Jason Chen I own a 2010 volkswagen routan which is basically a rebadged town and country/dodge caravan. It even says mopar in the corner of the window and on many of the parts. It shared the same anemic chrysler 3.8L v6 as well (making a whopping 197hp) and although it is considered to be more upscale and the interior is far better, than its chrysler counterparts, its Chrysler cheapness still shines through every creaky and I'll fitting panel. It has always burned a quart of oil every 1,500 miles and has gone through its first transmission at only 100k miles. I later purchased a 2015 Honda odyssey EX and I find it to be a major upgrade. It has way more power, at 45,000 miles it doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil, and the engine feels as smooth as silk. It is superior to the old "chrysler" in every way and i will never buy another chrysler product ever again.

You compared a 2016 Sienna to a 2017 Pacifica. You said the Pacifica has more horsepower. The 2017 Sienna has more horsepower that the 2017 Pacifica. You guys are not qualified to evaluate vehicles if you can't understand the many other flaws in your comparison.

Nothing will ever compare to the Toyota Sienna, its AWD and the only van with it, here in Canada its highly needed, if you don't have AWD in Canada your bloody crazy. This is the ultimate family haller not just because its AWD but its very functional and family friendly. This summer i was looking at trading in my family SUV (2013 Ford Explorer) for something bigger because there was another baby on the way, with having two car seats and constantly needing the 3rd row the explorer became to small. We looked into vehicles like the GMC yukon, Buick Enclave, and a few more. Not wanting to spend money on another small SUV or a gas eater, i looked into the Sienna, that week we went and put and order on one, waited for it to come in, test drove it and instantly fell in love, We purchased our 2016 Sienna Limited AWD, in July and couldn't be happier. Now i know the thought of driving a minivan can be dreadful, but once your behind the wheel of the Sienna you forget that its a van. This is truly the ultimate family vehicle.

This is what I hate about these guys when they review cars. Absolutely zero people that are buying a minivan care how the steering feels - it's not a sports car. 95% of the people buying these vans are soccer moms who simply expect the car to turn when they spin the magical wheel one way or the other. Also, complaining about the body lean is silly. They're 6,000 pound highway cruisers, not a race car. If you're buying a minivan for handling, you need to just not buy a minivan. They're pigs, they will drive like pigs. If handling is an issue for you in these cars, you're not driving them how they're supposed to be driven. And in an emergency situation, you're not going to miss the hazard anyway. Again, it's a 6,000 pound car. And to finish my rant - you'd be insane to pick the Pacifica over the Sienna. Those nine speed transmissions are a ticking time bomb, especially since Fiat/Chrysler has consistently been one of the WORST companies for reliability every single year. The Sienna will far outlast the Chrysler.

LOL I wasn't calling the reviewers pigs - the cars are. Also, if you buy a minivan to enjoy driving, you don't understand what the minivan is for. No minivan has good handling anyway (hint: they're not designed to be driver's cars). Also, the Camry is one of the most reliable cars on the market. Either you had a lemon, or you fucked something up driving it hard. There are millions of Camrys on the road with incredibly high mileage - I know because I own one myself.

We had a 2002 Dodge Caravan... drove it everywhere, road trips and all, and basically drove it into the ground... sold it in 2013 for $3000 and the lady who has it now apparently drives it all over the place, takes it on a lot of road trips. It served us well and was extremely reliable! We stayed on top of oil changes and such and it was great. We now have a 2013 Dodge Caravan, and it's been pretty great so far besides a couple recalls, but my mom is an aggressive driver, takes corners super quickly and breaks at the last second, and accelerates very quickly all the time. So far the van has put up with it perfectly, haha.

Out of a sample size of one, my dad's Chrysler Town & Country from 14 years ago with 150k mile, lots of miles filled with kids, and the only thing that has ever broken is the rear hatch motor switch. That doesn't seem all that bad for a car that everyone seems to think is the lowest quality you can possibly get.

I'm going to guess that none of the people that are commenting currently have any interest in minivans at all... if they did then they would realize the Chrysler is the most versatile with great fuel economy, and at a competitive price. it drives nicely it's quiet, and it is quick, which is important, regardless of whether or not it's a minivan. yes, the Sienna and odyssey are long in the tooth but it's a comparison of what's available now. Chrysler clearly deserves the first place here.

Chrysler makes literally only 3 vehicles, has well below average reliability, high cost of repairs and below average resale value. Tell me again why I would want to buy the new Pacifica over the tried and true Sienna when I factor vans are one of the longest kept vehicles and the Toyota name has consistently demonstrated that they are always near the top in reliability. Toyotas reported Lemons: 1 in 11.6 million. Chrysler lemons 1 in 500k (per auto guide). You are 20 times more likely to get a Chrysler lemon than a Toyota. If you want flashy new tech, go with the Kia. At least they have the warranty to back it up

I've driven several Chrysler models with the 9 speed transmission. They've improved the programming recently so it's not so jerky, but you won't get anywhere near the EPA numbers. A recent 4-cyl 200 rental only managed 19.1 MPG in suburban driving, and it's rated for 23 in pure city driving.

Pacifica is made in my home town, but I'd go with the Sienna because of Toyota reliability and Chrysler's lack thereof. You'll have the car working ten years from now, don't count on it with the Chrysler (and if you go to sell, you'll get a good price for it if you to Toyota). BTW, hope Chrysler didn't use at Zeppelin nine speed, they're crapping out in the Cherokee.

Toyota no doubt is number 1. Better than all the rest in every category. I had an old sienna for about 11 years the only problem it gave me was ac but only cuts we used it so damn much. We had a Toyota Camry for about 15 years and the thing ran like a pearl and we even sold with almost 300,000 mile and we still have our rav4 for and its a 1999 version so Toyota in my book is number one. I once bought a Chevy Impala, it was so horrible that I sold it after less than a year and than I bought a brand new 2015 Kia Sedona van and there was a so much wrong with it I turned it in and the buy back rate was so low I had to pay part of my down payment towards it. Now i am super happy as can be with my 2016 brand new sienna se.

The biggest advantage of the Toyota will be the resale value. The reliability factor is there, but not as dramatic from my personal experience. Also, there are millions of Chrysler minivans on the road so parts and maintenance are plentiful and reasonably priced. I've had two Dodge minivans and found them to be mostly OK. The first one was a 1996 3.3L version which had to have the transmission replaced at 80k miles. Other than that it was fine but that did upset me to the point of eventually trading it in on a new 2003 Honda Odyssey. Unfortunately, the Honda didn't turn out to be the mythical Japanese super vehicle; it had multiple electrical and transmission problems requiring more shop time than I would have liked. The Honda mercifully died after being rear-ended the third time so I got out cheap with the insurance settlement. After taking a hiatus from mini-vans for about three years, I purchased a 2010 Dodge 3.3L minivan which I still have. I've been pleasantly surprised as it has been mostly reliable and extremely rugged given what I use it for. Overall, I rate the 2010 Dodge as the best of the three taking usability and reliability as the measure. Bottom line: If I really wanted the features of the Chrysler, I wouldn't let the historical reliability differences stop me. Reality is more important than perception and it's been my experience that the Chrysler vans are pretty good overall. Sure that's anecdotal, but if Chrysler minivans are so terrible, how have they managed to dominate the minivan market for the last forever? Maybe they're not as reliable as a Toyota in general, but it's not like they're complete lemons. Keep the maintenance schedules up to date and most vehicles perform well.

I love how Toyota people who claim this and take their expensive yotas to the dealer every 3k miles for expensive service vs typical Chrysler owners who never go to the dealer for service and beat the tar out of their vehicles.

One thing kept bugging me: Stop comparing head room in a car with a panoramic sunroof/moonroof/whateverucallit, and one without. I mean, that seems like it would be in the Auto Reviews 101 handbook. Another item of importance is vehicle capacity. Being they're cargo vehicles often tasked with the lives of many passengers, I think the cargo weight capabilities of each automobile reviewed should be covered. I do not believe, even given recent relative incidences, that people put enough importance into these stats. Thanks for all the effort. Keep up the good work.

Did all the commenters trashing Pacifica reliability ever take a logic course. It is ludicrous to make a judgement on reliability on a new from the ground up vehicle based on comparison to a vehicle with mostly different parts. I checked the safety logs and the poster who stated his neighbors burned was flat lying. Unless they insurance companies and every one else has stopped reporting possible safety defects. It may have lousy reliability or it may not, just to soon to tell. Same with resale value. Why not try to objecfully evaluate the vehicle as is and wait for the data for the rest. Oh that's right your egos require you declare failure now to show what great gurus you are.

I do have one problem with the head room test. The Sienna had a sunroof installed while the Pacifica didn't. It's my understanding that sunroofs will lower the interior roof line by an inch or more, so the lack of headroom in the back seat could be due to the sunroof and not the slope of the roof itself. Just a though.

I got to look at a Pacifica this weekend. The dealer said the Limited trim is selling as fast as they can unload them off the truck. He had only gotten one with the lower Touring trim in so far and it was the only one he had on the lot. Seems like a very well thought out van. Toyota and Honda will have their hands full competing with that one.

I used to drive a sienna as a work horse. I did over 20k miles on it. Now I bought a Pacifica. My personal opinion is that the sienna has a bit better interior but overall the Pacifica is much better car to look at and drive. And the fully loaded Pacifica has a crazy amount of features inside where Sienna can't even compare. I guessed the reliability of the sienna might be better but let see what the future actually holds. The pacifica is yet to prove it's reliability as its a new model.

There is a lot of 3row mini vans and SUVs now, and we're buying them because of our family size ... I'd really like to see you put a popular brand of car seat in the 2nd row to see if the 3rd remains actually usable. I see the MFG website boosts it will hold 8 people, but if there is 2 car seats in the second row I don't see how people even get into the 3rd row without removing them. Knowing this would be a HUGE help to making a choice for my growing family.

I do not agree at all with this review at all. The Sienna is the better van based on the sheer amounts of flavors Toyota gives you. Want a cheep one? There's the LE which still gives you bluetooth, back up camera, and other cool things. Want a sporty one? There's the SE which actually has different suspension tuning and different steering wheel tuning and a sportier look. Want luxury? There's the XLE. And most importantly, want AWD? Well Toyota is the only brand that offers it. The Sienna also looks better to me and has a substantially better interior with much more comfortable seats. Chrysler Stow and Go is cool. But spend 2 hours in any seat other than the front seats and you'll hate yourself. The rotary dial gear shifter is a no for me too. Just a cool toy to keep up with the Jones' but just like electronic parking brakes it's just another electronic part that can and will fail. Why make something complicated that didn't have to be?

The 2017 Sienna has 295bhp and an 8 speed tranny.Check consumer reports and the gap in reliability on the Pacifica will be lucky to hit "Worse than average" while the Sienna will be "Better than average" at worst. The resale gap will be even more. And lets be completely honest. Does the minivan buyer purchase based on drag races and track driving or based on reliability, safety and resale value?
