2017 Genesis G80 Review and Road Test - DETAILED in 4K UHD! 

My G80 has 39k faultless miles. I’ve noticed the Genesis brand has the respect of the wealthy buyers now. The new styling is great and dollar for dollar these cars cannot be beat!

I lease the G80 last week. I love it. The GPS is awesome. The driving is superb. The seat comfortable. Drive assist, blind view, reverse camera etc. I LOVE THIS CAR.

I owned a 2009 Genesis 3.8, bought it in July, 2008 and kept it for 5 years -- which for me is an eternity. The reason I kept it so long was that I simply couldn't find anything else I liked as well. It was the finest vehicle I have ever owned; would be driving one right now were it not that I was looking for better fuel economy (have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Limited Hybrid). In my five years of ownership, and over 77K miles, I had a grand total of one thing go wrong -- a camshaft positioning sensor, and that was covered under warranty. The ride, handling, comfort, and good fuel economy (over 24 mpg avg over 5 years) were unmatched by any other car I've owned.

2017 Genesis G80 Review: I've had my G80 for over 2 weeks now. All I can say is WOW! I love the power, comfort, tech features and all the included warranties. I've test driven most of the mid-size luxury cars over the past 2 months, and was completely surprised by the Genesis G80. Driving up and down the SF Bay Area is suddenly fun, especially on 280! Everyone that's been in my G80 has been impressed by the plush interior, the quality leather, and the huge back seats. I love all the thoughtful features included in my G80 - automatic vehicle hold, which eases the stress of your commute in stop-and-go traffic, innovative hands-free trunk, which opens automatically if it detects your smart key as being nearby for more than 3 seconds. I also have piece of mind with the 10YR/100K Miles warranty. Additionally, the included "Valet Service" will pick up my car while they leave me with a Genesis loaner. This is very convenient, I'd never have to drop off my car for any service. The 311 horses under the hood gives me the power I need to drive up and down the Peninsula. In the past, we've owned the Lexus LS, Acura RL, and recently been test driving other German luxury cars. For us, it boiled down to value and how beautiful the car is. Other Genesis cars are coming, and Luc Donckerwolke (formerly with AUDI and BENTLEY) is in charge of the entire Genesis designs. We feel we've gotten a lot for our dollar with the G80 purchase. If you're in the market for a mid-size luxury sedan, do yourself a favor and test drive the G80. Thanks me later ;). Cheers!

By far, the best review of any car I have ever seen.

Just came across this review and I must say, it's right on point. I own a 2015 Genesis G80 and have have the best driving experience of my life. Not only is it a fantastic driving machine, but I've had no mechanical issues as of yet and really don't anticipate any in the foreseeable future. The warranty is fantastic, the price was right and it compares to the higher priced European models quite favorably. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for the money, it's the best deal out there.

I remember when Hyundai made the Excel in the mid-eighties. I test drove the 5 speed hatchback and HATED it. The seat was hard, the shifting was rough, and the car bucked like a carriage over every bump. Well, I rented the Sonata last year and felt I was in a Lincoln. I can only imagine how this Genesis feels on the road. I did sit inside once, and was blown away by the look and feel. Hyundai deserves every accolade it gets. They've come a very long way and never succumbed to criticism. It only made them persevere. Great job, Hyundai!!

I recently purchased a 2016, Genesis Ultimate (Hyundai fleet vehicle with about 2k miles) with the 3.8 liter engine. I've owned BMW 5 series in addition to MB E class as well as many other cars.....I'm old. This is without question the most fantastic car I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Black on Black......I call him Walter. This car makes me smile every time I look at it, the ride is marvelous, blulink Nav integration, etc., etc.....It is a beauty.

One of the most underrated cars sold in America. An excellent luxury car value without the badge/pedigree to sell in large numbers If you want to stand out, a great way to go

I have owned a 2012 Genesis 3.8 for over 3 years and have had ZERO problems with it. Very reliable and underrated car. I intend to upgrade to these new models in the future.

Excellent review! Genesis has a real, premium, RWD-based sedan that can legitimately compete in the midsize luxury sedan segment! Love it!

Great review with the comparison notes and walk through of the car. I've compared a few luxury cars before landing on the 17-18 G80 Ultimate V6 and I no matter what car I test drove I kept coming back to the G80. It's been a good, reliable ride with dope features.

i have watched many g80 reviews & yours was the most complete & detailed that i have seen....an excellent job....i just picked up the awd ultimate model & am hopeful its as good as advertised. although the biggest downside is the gas mileage, it is somewhat offset by the car using regular gas vs. premium, which where i live is about .50/gallon.....

An accountant I used to work with had this car in 5.0 format. In a way it is a perfect accountants' car- great features per dollar, great size per dollar, good objective everything per dollar.

I have a 2015 Genesis 5.0 and I average 21 mpg... freeway over 25. I dont know how you got 18 unless you kept it in sports mode and raced from light to light.

i wish people who review the genesis do so on its own merits. they seem to overlook that the car is not a sport car? talk about the car features more please, for example i left my rear driver window down and was exiting the car once home and the info center told me it was down. i appreciate such a feature. this is a great car with a ton of features so just say what the car does and have. i was going to buy a 2016 M.Benz E 350 ( i owned 2 prior) but chose the genesis instead. my decision was based on features and maintenance. The genesis rides very comfortable and super smooth. love it.

Thank you for the review, as usual, it was very informative, though it seemed you were less enthusiastic about this car vs. the 2015 version that you reviewed awhile ago. I've been checking out the Korean video reviews of the 3.3L turbo, and it looks like it addresses the lack of sportiness that has been missing from the Genesis/G80. I was heavily leaning towards the upcoming 3.3L turbo G80 as my next car, but, Kia will be releasing the 2018 GT with the same engine, and may prove to be an even better value for comparable performance (I'm willing to take a slight hit to the luxury quotient).

Car is gorgeous, I would take this over a Mercedes, BMW, Lexus or Audi the reliability is on par with Lexus or better, that nice strong V8 engine the features like a panoramic sunroof, this car blows away the competition by miles. Go Genesis even the 2009 to this new body style the past versions was magnificent.

Please include info on whether there are rear reading lights and whether there's a spare wheel (or at least space for one). Thanks.

I highly doubt the Audi is more reliable Alex. German engines are notoriously disappointing.

My next car is the G80 AWD v6 or twin turbo v6.... Now I have to wait for the turbo in 2017 mid year....

@AlexOnAutos - I'm pretty sure if you had some heat in the Brakes the stopping distance would be alot better than the figure you have.

G80 5.0 is the BOMB!

A friend of mine owns one. Decent car. he got it at dealer cost thanks to a relationship he has. really poor handling though. a heavy car. I would say the warranty is a big selling point, top end of the segment by far. it isn't trying to be the top lux car though. a humble lux car which will sell like crazy. overall a very accurate review. the fuel economy is awful though constantly filing up on long trips. but if you can afford this, you can afford the gas.

Alex - any preference between the 6 cylinder Genesis and the Kia Cadenza

Only thing missing in this good review is the unusual depreciation that hits this car when you drive off the lot (a con). If you are someone who trades their car in every three years, you may want to pass on this brand. I can find a Premium AWD near me on a 2017 with 1400 miles for $38,500 - or a hit of over $7000 miles for driving just over 1000 miles. That is really high for a premium brand car and it shows how much farther Hyundai has to go.

Are you going to review the Cadillac CT6 anytime soon?

Alex, would the future Kia 900 be an equivalent of the G80? I find the latest Kia styling (like the 2017 Cadenza) much more to my linking than the G80. Of course that assumes that Kia 900 would follow the same stylistic change toward Cadenza, but I think that is likely.

Does anyone actually use the ski pass through for carrying skis? Especially in a luxury or near luxury sedan?

I thought those thing at front bumper under the headlights is the headlight washer? And the "genesis 2018 G80" you are talking about is the G80 Sport that will come out in 2018? So it's different version?

Nice reviews. I enjoy watching your reviews. Actually, it is very informatic especially for the buyer to be refered. In case of G80 sports in Korea, some of the media has reported dissappointment of the driving feel, especially on the chassis and suspension system. Most of the reasons have been pointed out for the heavy weights. Even though Albert Biermann (now he is the on the position of Hyundai vice president) might have touched the G80 sport as well as the Elantra sport (naimed Avante sport in Korea), the results of G80 sports seemed to be less than the expectation, I guess from the media reviews. I hope that suspension system would be improved soon~

It has the right features for the class but has a decent interior for the class I think Genesis has to invest more time developing the interior to make it look more special like most of the competitions

Hi Alex, just though I'd let you know, your length comparison bar for the BMW 5 series is off. Both the old and new 5 series are significantly shorter than the Genesis G80. The 5 series belongs closer to the A6 and E Class in terms of length.

This is a very nice car overall and I'd no doubt buy it over a BMW or Mercedes, but that rear end looks more Hyundai Elantra than it does a luxury car.

Alex, how does the G80 compete with the Acura RLX, because the RLX is front-wheel-drive and the G80 is rear-wheel-drive? Or does the RLX and the Acura's own TLX compete with the Lexus ES, Kia Cadenza (In top end trims of the Cadenza), Lincoln MKZ, Volvo S60, and the Buick Lacrosse?

Test drove a genesis, LOVED it, but I'm an SUV guy. I wonder if the reason they didn't put AWD in the 5.0 is sub 15 mpg fuel economy? That's legit awful. Will probably at least test drive the Genesis crossover when it comes out in a couple years.

I'm a bit surprised that you opted to include the ES350 as a competitor but not the MKZ. I think the MKZ is arguably more likely to be cross shopped with the Genesis G80 than the ES is. The '17 MKZ 3.0T for example is very competitive power wise with the V8 Genesis, while the Lexus ES has no engine option with anywhere near 400HP, and is nowhere near as fast. Also, I think the MKZ plays the "traditional luxury/performance" thing more similarly to the Genesis than the ES does. The ES has always struck me as an Avalon for people that can't stand the coffee at Toyota dealerships, and don't want to be stuck waiting at the service desk behind some kid with his Corolla.

it only takes a different direction from Acura. It will follow Lexus like strategy of a mix of front and rear wheel drive cars. Unlike Lexus, Hyundai has not spent the money yet for a dedicated Genesis Dealership. They went on the cheap. They will have some in a few years, but it's Sold in a Hyundai Dealership, which, yes you are right, something Lexus is not doing. a new Lexus was never sold at a Toyota Dealership. Also, some FWD models, including a 3 row SUV based on the Sonata, will be available too. The Genesis is a great vehicle, but I went to see them after the media hype. Even though they are great, they don't have that special quality over the competition, like when I stepped into a 1990 LS400 in 1989. Even though Lexus is not what is was, it still treats customers right. I think that it's going to hurt resale on the Current Genesis, by Hyundai going on the cheap, and not do it right in the beginning. you need a quality channel, to sell a quality car.

You don't seem as enamoured with the g80 as you were with the 2015 genesis. Is it do to with tighter competition or the higher price perhaps?

Beware~ I have a 2016, and it stickered at $51k. In 1 year the Kelly blue book is $28,000 lol wtf. It lost $24k in 12 months ,12,000 miles. Great car, horrid residuals due to not yet being its own brand!
