Harley Davidson Road King Review
www.revzilla.com/common-tread/...
Unabashed in style and unapologetic in purpose, the 2017 Harley Road King comes to the scene loaded for bear with the all-new Milwaukee Eight engine. Long-range ready, and as robust in comfort features as it is in heritage, there are few motorcycles on the road that can match aptitude with attitude on the same level as the Harley Road King. In this motorcycle review, Lemmy shares his well-earned thoughts on the new 2017 Road King, as well as the MoCo. itself, while logging some autumn miles on the backroads of PA.

I like this guy. States that he's a Harley fan, but also freely mentions things it doesn't do well and that he doesn't like about it for a fair review. Nicely done!

I can't speak for the 2017 but my 2008 is just awesome. I've ridden softails and street glides and ultras and some non-Harleys but nothing feels like your getting on an American bike more than a road king. I don't believe in windshields or radios or navigation or handlebars with so many buttons on the that they look like you taped a keyboard on each side. If you want to listen to some music just twist the grip, windshield get between me and the wind and that just ain't right. And what if you get lost? Well then your the lucky one.

I prefer the older Road King's to the newer ones myself though I do use a windshield depending on the distance I am going. A few hundred miles is no big deal but going cross country to New Hampshire, Daytona or Sturgis and a few thousand miles will kick your ass. I am a 6'6 275 lb former Marine so I am no pussy but that is a looooong ride to take all what wind at 80 MPH. My pop has an ultra-classic and they have booming stereo so if i want music I just ride next to him, it helps with the boring stretches of long highway sometimes, but you are right, I prefer the roar of hammering on the throttle in open spaces. Edit: you can't get lost on a motorcycle those are just side adventures HAHA
@MrBoredom123
@MrBoredom123 6 лет назад
Can't stand radios either. Length of the ride depends on if I use a windshield or not. Also, never liked the way any of the fairings look.

Your reviews , IN MY OPINION are some the BEST reviews that I have seen. Very informative and really more in depth than a lot of reviews that I have seen for bikes, or even so me of the car reviews I have seen. This is the first review that I have seen from you, and it was an instant subscribe. Keep up the great work.

Thanks, Lemmy...I always enjoy watching you and listening to your informative commentary. I am 69 years old, and have been riding only 3 years! Can you say old guy "bucket list"? Gotta ride before I die! LOL...My first HD, out of "school," was a pristine '06 Sportster 1200C I found on Craig'sList for a great price. A year later (2014) I saw the re-introduced Dyna Lowrider and fell in "love at first sight." I'm a shorty, 5'6", so I test rode that beautiful low-slung thing, and bought it; glossy black with a simple red pinstripe and HD logo. I've tricked it out/uip with some nice improvements...fairing, bags, Vance & Hines pipes, heavy breather, etc., and it's a smooth, powerful lil' beast, with the 103 now pulling better than ever. On the pretty light LR frame it's a dang missile! Woof! Anyway, I'm getting too chatty. I just wanted to weigh in as a "newbie," but loyal HD man to the end! Here's to the Open Road...

Harley only sells about 216,000 bikes a year, which is actually a small amount when put into perspective. People complain about the performance of Harley's "and by performance I mean overall performance" because you can make a lightweight, powerful, smooth, and affordable bike with excellent build quality easily it just requires the company to decide that it is worth the investment. If Harley added full liquid cooling, dropped about 25% off of the stroke and added 25% bore you would have even more torque, and the engine would be far more response. People think that adding performance to a Harley will ruin it for touring, but it would actually make it better at everything.

Hey Lemmy. I own a 2017 Road King. And you hit the nail on the head on the seat topic. For me it keeps sliding me forward. I'm a tall guy, the last thing I need is my knees on my chest. My other concern is every once in a while my engine oil light stays on after I start my engine. It did it from day one. Numerous times I brought it back to HD to correct the problem....but to no avail. And lastly the squeaking noise from my rear wheel. All in all, I am satisfied with my ride. If the Harley & Davidson brothers were alive...this would make them very proud. Thank you Lemmy for the review. Take care. Aloha.

Great review. I love watching your review and love zevzilla. I just went from a 11 deluxe to a 17 Street Glide Special (in sparkle purple) and love the new engine and suspension. My hubby rides a 02 roadking classic which he loves since we do long distance rides it has been all over the country. I love having GPS (I have NO sense of direction) and a radio which is why I went with a street glide BUT I love the styling of a roadking.

I remember your review of the 1800 goldwing, glad to see you're not biased, I myself would like to rent a 107 for a longer than 5 minute test ride especially factory tune, for the short rides it's already leaps and bounds better than the 103 but still not quite the power output of other touring bikes

I just bought this exact Road King. Same year & everything with only 7,800 miles on the clock. I wanted something to tour on that had the most view of the road & I also liked how the steering felt lighter than on the Street Glide. Coming from a Dyna 103, I have to say I'm impressed.

Lemmy, just bought myself my 1st brand new Harley on 11/1/18 I went with the 2018 Road King and could not be happier. I agree with you on the seat, I broke her in with an 1150 miles roundtrip for lunch. Was phenomenal and a torque monster for an H-D. So far I am bone stock and still loving it. Although my 1st mod with be the seat. I do a fair share of long distance riding and the stock seat after 750 miles, is a pain in the A$$. I am thinking either a 19" wide Mustang or a Russel Day Long seat, which is popular in the LDR community. I don't know if you remember me from one of my other posts, saying you don't really know a bike until you've done at least 1k miles non stop. Keep on keeping on brother. Love your reviews. Peace Daren-C4 PS. Pushing 4k on her so far, miles of smiles :-)

well I have a 2010 103". I love the Roadking. After 09, they widened the frame and added 6 speed transmission. Its easy to remove the windshield for most riding, long trips, I put it on. Something you can't do with a fairing. They are easily customizable and have that classic look. I have 16"s on mine, Freight Train bezel, custom seat & custom paint.

I would like to ask this. Is the 2015/2019 Road King frame different from the 2017/19 RoadGlide and Ultra Limited frames? I have test ridden the Road Glide Ultra and Ultra Limited and loved the ride of the Road Glide Ultra. Im 60 years old and considering a Road King due to not having the heavy fairing on the forks like a Ultra Limited. I like the frame mounted fairing on The Road Glide but not sure how long it would take me to get use to the fixed fairing at extremely low speed turns. On the other hand I love it because there isn't hardly any wind buffering on the Road Glide. Also, How is the handling of The Road King at speeds of 85 mph on the interstate? Thanks for answering these multitude of questions.Im looking for a touring Harley to go along with my Softail cruiser.

My two bikes have both been tall and thin, a KLE500 and a Versys. I have done about 30,000 miles on them. Then for my birthday I got a days hire of the Road King. With its low down weight it felt planted and reassuring stable. I could also lean far further than I thought. I do not think it handles badly at all, it just handles differently.

I love my '16 FatBob, and i saw the Milwakee8 and felt a little screwed, but the more things i hear and where they have them sit, I'm more convinced to just keep my bike and tune it how i like; then when touring time comes either just opt for luggage and a screen, or just give up and go get the Springfield, which, I just flat out felt you were waaaay more happy and geeked about being on. maybe its cuz the RK is old hat to you, but little things like "optional ABS" system that you wouldn't put money into, and scraping boards to the point of high-centering. i mean maybe the Springfield wasn't pushed as hard cuz it was a first ride, or that, in my experience, the Springfield was just such an incredible beast to ride that it didn't even come up that there WAS any sort of similar shortcomings.

I’m 26 years old 6’1 and 300lb . I started riding at 16 with a sporster 883 and I was same height and weight. I had a dyna and now traded that in for a road king and have had it for 3 years now. This is hands down my favorite Harley bike. It’s got a classic look which I love. I never liked the look of fairings and you have the choice to remove the windshield. It’s also touring capable and comfortable without all the extra weight of the tour pack or big ass fairing unless you feel like buying a tour pack in which you also have that option I even ride this bike with my dog. Also the Harley community has a bad rep usually from tough guy posers that only really ride twice a year and wanna put on a Halloween costume but I can wholeheartedly say in actuality their community is one of the nicest I’ve ever met. Guys have even given me free parts and gear because they’re so exited to see a young guy riding Harley. I absolutely love this bike and Even though it’s trendy for millennials and I guess misinformed people to hate on Harley I can proudly say I’m a Harley man until I die.

People have a hard time believing anyone just likes Harley naturally rather than the image and name. Well they are wrong. My mom told me when I was a little kid a man pulled up on a big Harley at the gas starion next to us. I told my mom ' I'm gonna have one of those one day'. I didn't even know what a Harley was . But I did know I liked the look and the sound. So in my 20 years of riding I've always had a Harley. I don't care who is faster or has the most technology. I like a Harley because of what it is, not what it isn't

You know I"ll be honest I'm not a Harley fan in anyway shape or form. I would buy my Dad's though because it's just that My Dad's. He has a 2007 Heritage Classic Custom with a Fatboy front end and completely custom motor. So much motor work actually that the MINIMUM insurance plan only goes down to $2,000 no matter your driving / riding record. I love it though. That said I'm glad you actually mention the faults of the bike as well as the pros. This goes with ANY rider. I can't stand when it's "This is the best bike/brand fuck all the others."

I have always liked the Road King and the Heritage Classic, but since the Electra-Glide Standard came out I now find myself scratching my head as to the one I like best. I have test ridden all three and they are similar in some aspects, different in others. Right now, I am leaning more toward the Heritage Classic. I found a set of enormous hard bags for that bike and that's where I think I'm headed. Price wise, the they're all within about two to three grand of each other. I know the Heritage was designed to have the leather bags, but they just look sloppy on such a good looking bike.

It's a fantastic review of a bike that I'd happily buy, if I only had the chance of a proper demo ride. However, a small critique: there is no such thing as a "riding style that doesn't need ABS". No matter how slow you go, ABS can literally make the difference between standing and falling, no matter the speed. ABS is not something meant for sports bike: it's an added security for all of us, because a leak of oil or diesel in the road happens the same if you ride at 40 or 200km/h. Whatever, ride safe :)

I'll say it upfront, I'm an Indian fan however, I have toured on '14 Road King and out of the HD's I have ridden I do like the Road Kings and for me they are HD. I will 100% agree with you Lemmy about the stock seat and in my belief for the money you pay for a bike like this I expected a much better saddle then the one you get and in this area, Indian wins hands down in my book. I can't wait to throw a leg over a '17 Road King just to see how different it feels from the '14 and to get some first hand experiance with M8 motor. As always another great review Lemmy, two thumbs up. Cheers,

I don't hate Harley for their performance, but the way they mismanaged Buell.

My buds and I joke about that all the time. We're half convinced they keep Erik Buell locked away in a janitor's closet somewheres at corporate and every few years open it and demand a part or a concept.

Harley didn't mismanage Buell. Buells were so bad when Harley bought the brand it couldn't be saved. Notice how now that Erik Buell makes only 1 bike it's a great bike?

joshua holmes Buell having to make the Buell Blast with a Harley Engine, which they purchased from Harley and sold the bike at a loss? Or that they were forced to market Buells through Harley dealerships, which more often than not ostracised the bikes in a back corner, since their profit was made off Harley Accessories. I recommend you read this Cycle World Article. drive.google.com/open?id=0B_qu9zuw6HGKVl9ZS0lqS3F2TDQ

ManoftheGap Tell me one thing if Buells were in such good bikes then why did the company have to be sold and made by harley to begin with

Capital for growth, access to a robust dealer network, though that was mishandled. Hard to sell bikes with out a dealer network, with the multitude of state laws preventing sells direct from the manufacturer.The Company wasn't sold, Harley bought in; it was a decade of mishandling, treating the company like a bastard step child, that lead to the shut down.
