The standard Hyundai Elantra is nice, but the Elantra Sport looks to take things to the next level. We test it out to see if it's better than the original.
Probably one of the best cars you can buy for the money nowadays. As john said, hyundai and kia are smart with their new age cars, and adding a 6 speed and a radio with buttons is exactly what this market segment needed.
I love current Hyundai/kia lineups. Their desgns are much more classy and understated, meaning thses cars will likely age well. Priced right and now driving dynamics to match these are excellent cars.
I have the 2018 Elantra Sport, and it is by far, in my opinion, the best car for the money. Took my mom for a ride in it, and she absolutely loved it. She rode in my granddad's 2017 Cadillac ATS, and said my Hyundai felt better in every way. Sure, it may not be the fastest, but when I can pull up next to a new Honda Civic SI and know that I can keep up with it and I paid thousands less for mine, it's all worth it.
I've owned an Elantra Sport sedan with a six speed manual since August. Yes, it's rated 30 MPG EPA highway. The EPA doesn't test the fuel mileage the car "should" get, the auto makers do. I get 36 highway doing my usual 75 MPH in Indiana. The saleswoman told me Hyundai got in trouble overstating the fuel economy numbers a few years ago and Hyundai specifically underrated the Elantra Sport trims EPA numbers. This car blows the EPA numbers out of the water no matter how it's driven. This is a very good drivers car that isn't too fast to get you into trouble. One thing the saleswomen also told me is that you wont get full power output until the car is warmed up to prevent engine wear. So don't expect to pull it out of the driveway on a cold morning and be able to gun it, which you shouldn't do on any car to begin with.
I have the Hatchback version of the Elantra, the GT sport, and that car is just amazing!, definitely exceeded all of my expectations, my previous car was the refreshed Genesis Coupe which was a blast to drive but tbh, i think the Elantra gt sport is a bit better. Also the stock exhaust on both the sedan and hatch just sound incredible. Sounds waaaaay better than any car it rivals.
Test drive a base Elantra and then drive the Sport Elantra. You won't believe they are the same model, and the new multi link rear suspension makes a tremendous improvement in dynamics.
They both oversee projects for both brands. Schreyer designed the current Tucson and Biermann's team engineered the Kia Stinger. Biermann covers all high performance products for HMG
Can't wait for the Veloster N, a true performance vehicle. Up to 275hp. Were not getting the I30 N (Elentra GT) in the states. I really like the Sport Elentra. It's more subdued than the SI. Similar performance number but no LSD unfortunately. But heck, it's a lot more reasonably priced. You can't get everything when it's 3K less for the base sport.
I have a 2020 elantra now, but I loved my 2017 elantra sport. Great car. Looked great. Loved the features. The 2020 has more safety features and rides better, but I prefered the styling of the 2017. Great car.
They need to bring the i30 N here too!!! That thing is impressively sharp as a true enthusiast machine. These look like good sporty cars, but sporty is still pretty far from true "sport".
@Mathew Clark, no they need to bring the Hundai i30 Fastback. Not the hatchback kind, but right now it's out in Europe and it looks stunning. Rumor has it that this will become the 2019 replacement here in the states. Can you believe that this fastback is now competing with the Audi Sportback's design? I can't wait~
I’m a fan of the Elantra sport. But I just can’t get over how horribly cheap it sounds when it starts. I wouldn’t be able to live with that on a daily basis. Good job with this one though, Hyundai!
Michael Y. Ummm there are plenty of competitors that have high output turbo motors that trounce the Elantra sport in both power and fuel economy. It's not like going from a 2.0 liter to a 8.9 liter supercharged V8... It's still a small turbo 4 cylinder that in the grand scheme of things does not get stellar gas mileage commensurate with its output.
Michael Y. Obviously not, other smarty. Because other cars that offer upgraded turbo engines get better mileage with more power. Let me simplify that so you can understand... you don't have to get base engines to get great gas mileage, you can get the fun one and still get commuter car economy. So I maintain that the complaint of poor economy from the manual equipped 1.6T is not unreasonable. Try to keep up.
Michael Y. And I love how to wrote that whole lecture to prove absolutely nothing. I didn't even bother reading it... I'm sure it's chocked full of crap that has nothing to do with anything
Michael Y. Oh god, I just read it. Just like I thought, a bunch of arguments that have nothing to do with anything I said. A ford escape??? Who said anything about a crossover. Does an escape compete with an elantra sport? I thought i used the word COMPETITORS. Well, at least you tried.
Only with this channel's driver. In the real world they are pulling much faster times. And as someone that was eyeing the NISMO before deciding to purchase the Sport instead, the Sport is so much better...
Noseefood fck all that stuff. Si is faster. 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. 1/4 mile in 15.2@95mph. Braking from 60 in 102ft. Better fuel economy also(28 city 38 highway). And the si has an lsd compared to the elantras open diff. I will take the more driver centric si.
tommieboi707 the numbers in this video are off. Several owners getting low 15's, high 14's on the Elantra in the 1/4. 0-60 in the 6's. Equally as quick in my opinion. I'm also averaging 32-34mpg combined. In my book all the Si has over this is an LSD. But then again I drove my Sport off the lot for $19k which will not happen with an Si at a Honda dealer...
