I've had my Elantra Sport for 3 weeks, and I love it. Previously had a Mazdaspeed 3 and Civic Si, and was dead set on a GTI SE, but couldn't justify the $10k difference. But this isn't just a good car for the money - it's a damn good car, period. It feels so solid and well made, handles confidently. It won't break your neck off the line, but once you're going it's incredibly quick to pass or merge into the highway. I got the 7-speed dual clutch, which is mostly good. Upshifting is near instantaneous, but downshifts are a little less predictable - this may be my only (very minor) criticism. I do absolutely love not having to shift manually especially in traffic) unless I want to. With current rebates you can get these for less than $20k with the manual transmission, which is a steal. The 2 most similar cars in this price range are the new Civic Si (which I think isn't the best looking) and Fiesta ST, and they're not even close to offering what the Elantra Sport does. I can't believe I like a Hyundai so much!

@@jayczyzyk9707 no way. The pricing of sale & cost of maintenance for GTIs is enough alone to put the Elantra Sport over the top. Lot of dollars for only 20 more HP, which an Elantra Sport can be upgraded to with simple, non voiding warranty performance parts. The newer Si is completely butt ugly & Honda refuses to style it beyond a young boy race ricer. Not to mention the lack of Vtech motors in them now. Makes me miss the 2015 Si.

Best, most thorough review on the '17 Sport yet. Thanks Alex. As far as fuel economy, I've been easily beating the EPA numbers. My last two tanks indicated 36+ MPG on my mostly highway commute. I have the 6-speed manual. Oh, and it runs on 87 octane fuel. Don't think you mentioned that and it's significant.

wow, i actually agree with that sentiment, although all 3 reviewers are very different in style, criteria and preferences, but all are very thorough and comprehensive. i would also put SaabKyle in or slightly below that top group.

lobo00712 saabkyle is also really good. they all have their own styles and highlight things they consider imoortant. I personally like that alex puts grades to each aspect of the ride. I.e. when he grades ride quality that way I know what he thinks of the ride quality in the class. but yeah, it's good to know I'm not the only one that watches multiple reviewers for the same car and looks forward to it.lol

i've seen enough of their reviews (well besides saabkyle; as good as he is, i can't really sit through a lot of his reviews for some reason) to pretty accurately predict how they'll rate the car well before the end of the review and sometimes even before the review starts. Except for maybe savagegeese who keeps the exact same expression, tone and body language almost all the time and then i'm surprised that he actually enjoyed the car.

Alex I beg you to get your hands on 2018 Elantra GT sport fully loaded when it's available. I get to seat inside one at NY auto show and it looked great inside and outside. It will also have great number of features for the money. Thank you for great reviews as usual.

The 2017 Civic EX-T is and has been available with a 6-speed manual for several months now. it has 31/42/35 mpg ratings.

Just got mine yesterday after work. 17 model, with a low 28k miles. I have the galactic silver color. I love the red accents throughout the car. Some lady rear ended my 06' G35x which is a bummer because having the all wheel drive I'n NE Illinois is huge!!! Love the car so far. Literally reminds me of my friends 2004 audi A4 with the 1.8T. The handling, nice tight responsive steering, the power is down comparatively but that doesn't surprise me.

This review helped me a lot in deciding to purchase a 2018 Elantra Sport w/ DCT with 25k miles on the odo (base w/o premium package), which has a standard sunroof and blind spot warning over the 2017 model. I was looking for a different car to succeed my 2011 Infiniti G37x, looking for a more economical vehicle, modern features like Apple Carplay and the folding seats are a major omission from the G37. Another deciding factor was the remaining 2.5 year bumper-to-bumper warranty, giving a used car buyer nearly the same level of assurance as buying a brand new car! I was quite set on the 2018 MY due to the added features over 2017 and I find the exterior styling significantly more attractive than the 2019/2020 refresh. And a personal petpeeve, why did Hyundai drop the trunk release button on the trunklid itself for 2019, really don't understand why some manufacturers decide to save those $5 there... While steering feel and handling are obviously a little down from a RWD-biased setup with hydraulic steering, the Elantra Sport is spot on in terms of day-to-day driving feel. Exactly appropriate steering weight, slightly more compliant springs than the Infiniti (I'm actually surprised of the suppleness of the ride, considering the skinny 225/40 R18 tires), and no drama moderately high speed cornering (little understeer, but braking mid-corner or lifting throttle doesn't upset the chassis at all). As for the drivetrain, the engine is very pleasant for both relaxed cruising and more spirited driving. Looking at the reviews of 2016/2017 Velosters in particular, I think Hyundai improved the programming of the DCT a lot, because pulling away from a stop and shifts are actually buttery smooth for a DCT. Strangely, I do sometimes feel a little acceleration kick after shifting into 2nd during moderate acceleration, maybe Hyundai programmed the ECU/transmission to limit torque in 1st gear in moderate acceleration scenarios. The DCT does indeed like to upshift a little early but that doesn't bother me (it's not crazy like someVolkswagens DSGs I drove that drop to 1200-1400 rpm after upshifts under light acceleration, the Elantra usually doesn't drop below 1500 rpm, so still providing sufficient torque) and the DCT is sometimes a little lazy following kick-down. This can be easily solved by manually downshifting before any passing maneuver (the steering wheel-mounted flappy paddles are surprisingly responsive for a relative budget car), and the engine picks up wonderfully from 2000 rpm. I just hope that the DCT proves to be reliable, not many data points seem to be available yet, and at least from VW DSGs I know that driving habits have a big impact on longevity (frequent 0-60 laps or shifting between D and R while still moving in the opposite direction are a solid accelerator of internal wear!). Compared to regular Elantras in SEL trim from MYs 2018 and 2019 that I've driven as rental cars, the all-black interior styling and sporty seats definitely give the Sport trim a more upscale feel. Also, I believe that sound insulation is a step up from lower trims, mostly noticeable with bumps at highway speeds. I do appreciate the sunroof a lot; I always have the shade open to let in some extra light in the otherwise rather dark cabin. Some aluminum trim would have been a nice addition and I wish the black seats with red inserts for the side bolsters and red seatbelts, as available on the Australia/Korea-marketed Elantra SR Turbo, were available here. Lastly, fuel economy, One of my focal points after the Infiniti, and I must say, it's impressive how easily one can beat EPA ratings with a moderate driving style. 20% city / 80% highway has yielded me an impressive 32.6 mpg so far, getting awfully close to the base 2.0 NA, but with a nice surplus of power at one's disposal. This notably includes about 20% of mountain driving, and surprisingly, mountain driving mpg sits somewhere in the middle between city and highway, again showing how little internal friction/energy loss this powertrain has. In my case, I was able to pick up this 2018 Elantra Sport with 25k miles for about $2500 more than a comparably mileaged SEL and just $1000 more than a Value Edition. Considering similar equipment levels with the Value Edition (trade dual zone climate for leather seating and HID headlights/LED tail lights I believe), I think the Sport trim's independent rear suspension, 1.6L turbo engine, DCT transmission, wider tires and much sharper looks are well worth that small premium. There were not many Sports available in my area (perhaps 2-3% of all Elantras on the market, so if you find a good specimen, go for it! Now I hope other casual car enthusiasts on a sensible budget will discover the Elantra Sport as well so I can be satisfied with its value retention too...

6MT owner here, getting 33+ mpg on average. EPA ratings are way off. So I don't consider the fuel economy to be a Con, especially when it's matching the Kia I traded in that had the N/A 2.0L. Also don't agree with the Con for lower performance than a GTi when it clearly isn't meant to compete with that car. And lastly, the GTi is no longer available in the US in 2-door (3-door?) trim. :)

My 18' Elantra sport w/7spd DCT averages 33 mpg with mixed driving and 36-38 mpg on the freeway with a best ever of 41 mpg going from Chicago to the west side of Michigan and back back in 2019. I've had the car for over 2 yrs and bought it w/ 12K on the clock and it was CPO. I've put 26K on it with Z E R O issues and the trans is winning me over although I wanted 3 pedals.

There are two ways to buy a car; with your head or with your heart. I'm somewhere in between but definitely lean towards my heart. I'd rather choose a car based on how it makes me feel over impressive figures on a spread sheet. Because of this, I'd even take the Elantra Sport over a new Audi A3. (I work at Audi and drive $100,000 cars all the time. Big whoop....)

I want to get this car in a manual but the reason for looking at this is to daily drive in rush hour traffic and my Miata can be my fun car. Really itching to test drive both versions. The DCT sounds like a solid option in a world where it is hard to find good affordable automatics.

Hey Alex, I love your channel and it seems like your quality improves with each subsequent video. Two quick questions, one more flippant than the other: 1) Do you have any idea if the refreshed Elantra GT will be sharing the Sport's suspension setup? 2) Are you going to be getting any camera time with the LC500/500h? It's far, far beyond my means but I'm obsessed with it nonetheless.

The Elantra will have a sport trim with the IRS, the other models will use the standard Elantra suspension. We hope to have the LC this summer but don't have any dates yet.

Fantastic work as usual. One of my favorite channels on YT. Looking much forward to that Civic Hatchback review. This Hyundai it's no slouch, very good option in a sea of "MEH, BLEH" sedans out there. Seems like you're very impressed by the DCT version, i would too if i didn't have to work on my own cars. I don't know about Hyundai but i saw a DCT clutch R&R on a FORD FOCUS and it was something the average educated back yard mechanic can't perform in a weekend like i do on regular manual boxes. Plus i'm very VERY POSITIVE stop and go traffic on any mayor metropolis will kill it in no time before a regular slush box or manual throws the towel.

David X depends on variables. I know you are not asking me but I'll try and help! Do you live in a large city and/or are a victim of traffic often? Will you be comfortable with a manual in traffic? Do you want better MPG in the CVT transmission? 22city/30hwy MPG with a manual transmission compared to 26city/33hwy MPG with a CVT. Are you looking to have fun while driving? Is it more fun for you driving a stick shift or an automatic? What transmission do you feel you have the most control of when driving? Personally, I would take a stick shift any day of the week. So much more fun. I feel in control. I don't mind traffic. MPG in the manual doesn't phase me. This is the car I will be buying by the end of the year over the Civic Sport Hatch.

Many Thanks for your thoughtful and insightful response and look forward to hearing how you are enjoying your new purchase. I currently drive an 02' V6 Camry. I enjoy the smoothness of the Lexus V6 (detuned for Camry) and effortless torque but it is reaching 260,000km which means change is on the horizon. After having driven a bigger car for over a decade, I am keen on something more nimble and agile. In short, what I do miss is engagement. However I doubt that I can enjoy the DSG in the same way that a smooth torque converter operates with a torquey engine. Most small cars (in my view) require a manual to truly extract the performance from the engine. Sure, some would argue that GOlf GTIs etc prove otherwise but a VAG DSG product is a grenade waiting to explode once it is outside of warranty. So I'm caught in the perpetual conundrum of "I miss the smoothness and relaxed drive of a V6" with the "I want the nimbleness of a smaller performance car". In both scenarios I know I will miss the automatic transmission in the daily grind but know that with a smaller car a manual is best. C'est la'vie. Incidentally Mark have you considered the i30N due out shortly? Best Wishes

I have a 2016 Elantra Value Edition and I leased it before the 2017 came out. Now I have "buyers" remorse because I could have waited a few more months for my lease to end and have the opportunity to lease the 2017 instead. My Elantra is so under-powered that I don't enjoy driving it. Luckily my daily commute is ridiculously short. IF I lease another Elantra, I may be learning towards the Sport but since that won't be until 2019, a lot of model changes can occur by then.

I think he misspoke and meant the Sentra SR Turbo, not the Sentra SR. They are different, and the numbers he gives are clearly for the turbo engine. And then the Sentra NISMO is a little different, though probably not much faster than the turbo.

You keep saying the Civic sedan is not available with the manual. However, the Civic EX-T sedan comes standard with a manual transmission, new for 2017.

This car reminds me a lot of the Mercedes CLA250. The dashboard gauges layout is almost a straight transplant from the Mercedes, the 7spd DCT gearbox and small size. Crazily enough, I find myself prefer the Elantra Sport over the CLA250 since it is equally rapid, smoother gearbox, burns regular unleaded & above all, significantly cheaper to buy. Also the CLA really isn't that luxurious despite the Mercedes badge. Combined with the dizzying array of options on the CLA which easily pushes it price to nearly 2x a base Elantra while the Elantra Sport gets almost everything standard, it is almost a no-brainer; I'd almost think you'd be buying the CLA250 over the Elantra Sport for the badge.

While I love the Civic's combination of performance and fuel economy I have to give the Elantra Sport serious consideration. Especially since Honda's manual transmissions seem to be a source of concern lately.

Alex, at about 30 seconds in you mention performance of the 3 engines available in the 2017 Elantra. You say the 1.4L engine in the ECO is a little on the slow side. I have not tested the vehicle myself, but other publications have rated the 0-60 just below 8 seconds. Not bad for a small engine, I'm sure the low end torque and dual clutch transmission help to achieve this. Nonetheless, Great review. Too bad I bought the 2016 Jetta S with technology, the 1.4T engine is fantastic. However, I put about 22K miles on it and already feels like it's starting to fall apart. I've developed more rattles and creaks than you can imagine, ugh. I may sell it at the end of the year, I'm a little scared of the reliability.

I was just going to thank Alex for reminding us of the chronic reliability issues that come with the VW ownership experience but now I can thank you instead. The gall VW has in charging such a premium for their Mexican-made GTI and GLI is emblematic of their complete corporate arrogance. If your 2016 Jetta S "feels like it's starting to fall apart" it probably is falling apart.

Yeah. Sucks the Elantra seats are manual. My 2010 Honda Accord had electronic seats but NO Bluetooth features.

Hi Alex! Please review the all-new 2017 Mazda CX-5. Looks like noise, handling, ride and interior were greatly improved. I liked it even more than BMW X1 after few test drives.

I wish ALL reviewers would stop comparing any Sedan to the GTI (hatchback). Compare it to the GLI all you want, at least it is a sedan (all though a lot more expensive)

In your 2016 Civic video you said cabin noise came in at 71 decibels and you rated it a B+ . Here you said the Elantra's cabin noise was also at 71 decibels rating it A.... What's the deal?

Dump the letter scores and just report the number. Too many people cross shop between types (especially these slightly-sportier-but-essentially-still-the-same-car subsegments).

My guess is that the scores are contextual. The Civic was probably less impressive in its noise level by the sheer fact that it's not specifically a sports model, whereas this Elantra is.

Or there is a perceptual difference between noises. Some sounds are more annoying than others even if they are of the same DB level.

definitely the best looking compact car! I am tempted to buy one, if only I didnt already have 2 cars I need a good gas mileage newer car. I know 25 isnt all that great mpg but its way better than 15 in my cherokee and 17 in my mustang haha

Alex, how does the DCT compare to other DCT's? If VW's DCT's are well executed and Ford DCT's not so much, how is the Hyundai? Is it jerky?

MotorCity J much more refined compared to Focus, but a bit clunky at lower speed. Focus DCT is much worse, but VW DSG is still better.

great review lots of details love all your reviews as well but not to sure of 0-60 in 6.4 seconds with 200hp. I Know​ cars with 250hp that takes that same time. the Honda Accord 3.5 with 268hp takes about that time.

250hp and 6.4s is sad. My 12 year old 268hp V6 Mercedes E350 does 5.5s. With these FWD Turbo 4's, the tuning (and matching) of the transmission to the engine's power curve is more important than ever and it becomes glaringly obvious in the 0-60 times when it isn't done well!! Sounds like Hyundai has done a good job of matching the gearing to the engines power curves!

Alex, I know the 1.6L Turbo has been used before in Hyundai's lineup and is proven, but what about the DCT? Will it be reliable, and is it a proven transmission for Hyundai?

Great review, Alex! The Elantra Sport sure is a great looking vehicle! 👌 I just recently reviewed the Elantra Sport, too! It has a pretty neat interior and an amazing sounding exhaust note! Also, I loved the new flat bottom steering wheel design! I just wish they used more soft to the touch materials. 😔 I cannot wait until you can review the upcoming Elantra GT! This year's Elantra (2017) lacks the features. You can get Sport trim with 201hp but you can not add any premium packaging to it. "Primium" Limited version of elantra has 54hp less but could be fully loaded. This makes no sense to me at all.

1.6Turbo model is pricey without features. With features as package, that could net you closer to 30K. This way it is better as long as you get 1.6Turbo motor. I am not fan of features and to me they make no sense, but each to own. Those who want comfort, feature and fuel efficient can get limited model while those want Sport model [sportier and fun] with little features can get Sport model. Wait for Elantra GT [hatchback]. Perhaps you can get what you need [features and motor].

Pricey? This car is a steal at $21,650 MSRP. And Hyundai is practically giving them away with incentives right now making them an even better bargain. I got mine for $19k out the door.

+Jason Miller Good to know. I haven't heard such deals in Canada yet. That being said, with features, the price would have been pricey. Lack of certain features make the value of the car affordable as you suggested.

I have the previous model Elantra. I find this new model styling too conservative and boring. I do like more power and the independent rear suspension of this car. I am glad Hyundai didn't Super size this car like Honda did with the Civic.
