Sponsored by The New School for Social Research (newschool.edu/nssr).
The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry (www.criticalsocialinquiry.org) will open part of its programming to the public - a series of lectures taught by this Summer's faculty cohort of K. Anthony Appiah (Professor of Philosophy and Law, NYU), David Harvey (Professor of Anthropology and Geography, CUNY), and Michael Taussig (Professor of Anthropology, Columbia).
David Harvey's lecture is entitled "Visualizing Capital".
Marx defines capital as "value in motion." Is there a way to map and visualize how capital moves around within the totality of a capitalist mode of production? And in what ways does creating such a visualization help clarify what Marx was attempting to do in the three volumes of Capital that he planned but never completed?
Introduction:
- Ann Stoler, Willy Brandt Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and History
Speaker:
- David Harvey, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and Geography, The Graduate Center, CUNY
About the Institute:
The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry (ICSI) is designed to provide advanced graduate students and junior faculty from around the world with the opportunity to spend one week at the New School’s campus in Greenwich Village working closely with some of the most distinguished thinkers shaping the course of contemporary social inquiry. Each of these scholars will teach a week-long seminar on a foundational thinker or topic of contemporary concern in a series of hands-on, intensive, and intimate sessions.
Location: John L. Tishman Auditorium, University Center
63 Fifth Avenue, Room U100, New York, NY 10003

I always find the stuff he talks about China amazing. I live in Mexico City and the amount of high rises being built is amazing and the price of rents is also nuts (to the point that two adults with B.A. deegres both can only pay a room rent inside an apartment). I really don't understand how there is purchasing power for all of that (as prof. says, it is probably debt), it just seems unsustainable.

Hi. yes, real estate has been an object for wealth storage and debt generation for ages. Real estate is investment objects, not something people are supposed to live in. Just as artwork, jewellery and land. Really weird, but sadly true. Another example of the crazyness of capitalism.

Around 1 hour and 6 minutes he makes some great points about universal basic income, etc.

After reading Graeber I'm not convinced that a jubilee would destroy pension funds, I think he has that part wrong.

1:13:39 Ugh! There's always someone like that at every lecture, isn't there? What disrespect to everyone. You're there to listen to the guest's lecture, not a lecture from one of the attendees. lol. He didn't even seem to me, to have put much effort into disguising his speech as a question.

One can conclude, what does freedom mean in nowadays capitalism? Being free of debt. Only the poorest, because they barely survive and they are not members of the financial system; or the richest because if they want they do not need to be in hock to the bank can aspire to freedom, one step out of the bad infinity. I propose we should rethink our power as consumers.

Basic income will not increase the money for realization but distribute money that AI will take out of circulation.

52:26 This coupled with all the environmental data following the same trend points to a terminal outcome unless a drastic change of course is taken; the number of scientific investigators adding their voices to extinction awareness grows almost daily. In totality, so-called really existing capitalism (socialization of all major risk; privatization of huge profits) is a brutal, inefficient, unscientific regime toxic to life; in speeding up its activities, the event horizon will soon enough be crossed ... and then that really is it; game over for all living things on Earth. Even God won't bother looking at what happened; just make sure whatever grew there never grows again, He would say; it must not spread through the Universe. Those who caused this curve are often powered on Jesus juice and see Earth as something divinely gifted to be carved up for private ownership by a 'chosen, enlightened few' ('eye of providence' Satanists, a faction of Gnostic Christians [there are now tens of thousands of Christian secs, many despising each other]); everyone else is deserving of their slavery and must pay tithe or suffer. They cover up their crimes against humanity with endless lies in the press and they have attempted to enslave each new generation with crippling debts for higher education, unaffordable housing, worsening career prospects, crumbling civic infrastructure and a depleted and dying planet. They are anti-social, anti-caring, anti-sharing, anti-logic, anti-education, anti-women, anti-black, anti-human monsters and should be taken out of the general population for emergency psychiatric deprogramming before the power of corporate governance permits them to destroy even more lives.
