There's a new Miata in town, and it's more than just a hard top. We drive the "Retractable Fastback" MX-5 on the street and the track to see how it performs.
I’m thankful they use this host after all these years It Brings me joy to hear that voice in car videos ❤️ My car ran 14.4 your doing something wrong motor week
People will say it's underpowered but however that's the price range. It's an affordable sports car. If you wanted the mx5 to hit 60 in 5.1 second the cost would obviously be high. The performance of this car is right in its class you want 0-60 in 4.5 seconds hope you have money for a Camaro. Not to mention mx5 0-60 in 6.3 seconds motorweek .come on we know it's not true .try 7.9 around there
That's why it's nice to have options.. I don't understand why it's so difficult for Japan to have different strokes for different folks.. Germany and America offer great variety. Ford and Chevy offer their sporting cars in mild to extra hot.. BMW, Mercedes, VW also offer various levels of heat in their cars... But Mazda, Toyota. NOPE!!! You only get mild, that's it.. GT86 in mild, MX5 in mild... They offered the MazdaSpeed MX5 briefly, but only briefly. There needs to be a new MazdaSpeed Miata dammit! And a BRZ/86 with the WRX motor too!
I had a 2016 Miata Club. Limited slip and summer tires made a massive difference in the roadster version. While other ND'S were doing mid-low 15's in the Quarter mile with very squeely starts, I was keeping up and beating the V8 Mopars (R/T Chargers and Challengers of course). As cool as the Miata RF looks, it goes the wrong direction. Should have just let Fiat have this design... Sadly, they will sell.
Thanks for not calling it a toy or weekend car. Its a sports / performance car. Ford has the mustang, Chevrolet has the Camaro. Mazda has the MX5. Its not quite the same as those other cars but in Mazdas line up its the only thing comparable to them and its meant to be what Mazda considers a sports / performance car.
It might be pushing 155 horsepower at the wheels, it's got to be pushing damn near 200 at the flywheel, I have an MX3 GS with a klze engine swap, weighs 2600 pounds and has 200 horsepower, does 0 to 60 in 5.9 seconds. So it has a similar power output to the Miata. That little 2.0 is definitely pushing more than 155 horsepower, probably a little FIB on the company's part for insurance benefit for the customer. Clever.
I respect the Miata, but I don’t respect this variant of the ND, because it’s too overrated, too luxury-minded, and the lack of headroom pisses me off. Plus, this makes people forget about the original hardtop Miatas, during the NB generation. I just wish, Mazda made more simplistic designs and more exciting (i.e. powerful with/or without Rotaries) cars, for their old-school simple-minded enthusiasts. Until then, Mazda is dead to me, as a automaker; just some dumb luxury-focused lifestyle brand, just like Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, but at least they’re cheaper than the Italians.
Agreed. Standard ragtop looks better, and is more reasonably priced, and does'nt have all that extra weight high up on the chassis. Unnecessary added complication.
