2017 RAM 2500 6.7 Cummins engine knock with oil analysis results.
The only difference between the two UOA results is the truck pulled a heavier fifth wheel RV in the second UOA compared to the first one. (UOA used oil analysis)
Engine oil: Shell Rotella T 15W-40
First test was a 9,000 pound fiver. 3655 miles ,half of mileage is towing.
Second test was a 11,500 pound fiver. 4334 miles, half of mileage is towing.
Lab comments: The "deep knock" isn't ideal, and the only clue to the potential source in these results is iron. It's still quit high on a per-mile basis and it didn't really improve much compared to last time. It should be lower if it were from wear-in material last time, just like copper and silicon dropped. Aluminum bumped up too, so maybe the extra iron is due to hard use like towing or hauling. In any case, use 4,000 miles if all is well, despite the 7.1 TBN, just until iron improves a bit. Too much iron can make the oil itself abrasive. Check back at next service.

I have an 08 w/ 130k and it had the same tick. If you get one of those stethoscopes with the rod on the end you can, for lack of a more technical explanation, poke things and see if you can find the source. My injection pump is what is ticking on mine. Supposedly it's a synchronization thingbetween the engine and pump but no worries other than your sanity lol. I've had mine for about 30k miles now and it's made the same sound since I got it.

You know Pm that sure sounds like a cracked fly wheel slapping. The reason I say that is the sound you hear when in the cab, but it could be a wrist pin too. I hope everything comes back good on it. Have a good week!

I know what you mean, it seems most of these knocks are coming from the number 5 and 6 spots. That puts it right by the drivers right foot! I'll continue the UOA, per FCA recommendation. Have a good one!

Did you ever find out what it was? I just watched an older Power Driven Diesel video of an old 4th gen they bought to test on and it's original 6.7 with over 300k miles had a knock like yours. It turned out to be #5 cylinder's connecting rod small end bushing. It lasted 300k miles and was still running but definitely concerning if it was my engine making that noise.

Most think it's the CP3 fuel pump being in or out of sync with the engine. If my iron PPM were a little more in line, I wouldn't worry about it. Time will tell. Thanks!

Check your grid heater also known as the "killer grid heater" (look it up on line) that's what it ended up being on my customers truck. You can check your grid heater where the positive cable connects to the grid heater terminal on top of the intake plenum. If it wiggles or comes out in your hand then the stud nut have broken off and has gotten into a cylinder. If you let it go too long it will mushroom out the piston and split the cylinder block.

I have a 2014 ram 3500 6.7. Got it with 60k miles it has 103,000 on it and does the same thing 24/7! Power is there no problems at all. Just that noise. It’s annoying but I tow cars with a flat bed trailer and no problems. Just can’t pin point the problem .... sadly.
@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 3 года назад
I can't pin point it either. I'm using Power Service Diesel Kleen now as Cummins says it's fine to use. Lots of owners claim the knock is coming from the CP3 pump and will not harm anything. My issue is the iron content is trending up. I'll know more this time next year, the truck will be towing a fifth wheel about 4,000 miles and that should give me some good data on the UOA. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@blacksmokin
@blacksmokin 4 года назад
That noises is mechanical it's happening at RPM so it's in the bottom end . It's either excessive piston skirt to cylinder wall clearance from piston scoring which would explain your aluminum and iron readings being high or it could be a wrist pin problem. I would find somebody with a scan tool that can do a cylinder cut out test and see if you can isolate which cylinder is causing the noise.
@pmtips4482
@pmtips4482 4 года назад
Hi and thanks for commenting! I take it that, if you cut out the injector the lack of down force from the power stroke will silence the wrist pin or skirt excess (noise)? Thats a good idea, the truck is still under warranty, I'll check with the dealer. Thanks again!
@blacksmokin
@blacksmokin 4 года назад
@@pmtips4482 If you cut out the affected cylinder that has piston/cylinder wall scuffing it usually will quite down the noise. Because you don't have all the combustion pressure slamming the piston skirt up against the wall. Wrist pin failure you may not hear any change in sound at all or it will be very slight.

Hi Matt, my truck runs really good, pure stock of course. The exhaust brake works perfectly too. My only concern is iron is getting higher. The last lab report shows 105 PPM in only 2500 miles with half those pulling 11,500 lb fiver, truck and trailer weight is 20,000. My dealer says RAM (Stellantis) will not recognize an oil analysis report, which I understand. Too many variables. Service writer thinks it's the CP3 pump and injection timing and/or piston TDC. Nothing yet, I just got my oil analysis from Blackstone two weeks ago. Truck at 15,000 miles, oil had 2500 miles on it with 1200 of those pulling a 11,500 lb fifth wheel. Iron FE was 105 PPM !! All other metal either 1 or 2 PPM. Blackstone says it looks like steel on steel wear issue going on. I'll take this info to my dealer, but I'm out of 5 year power train in 6 months. I'm hoping it's still breaking in but at this point I don't know what to think. My old 2002 5.9 Cummins was a picture perfect oil analysis machine with a perfect trend line DOWN in iron, not UP like this engine. Good luck to you and yours!

I installed the banks monster ram with the grid heater delete/ coil heater, I have that same sounding knock. Can’t hardly pinpoint it but it does sound bottom end, it seems to be less noticeable at cold engine but knocks when warm, slight increase of knock with rpm’s and either drowned out by engine or exhaust drone with higher rpm’s or leaves I can’t tell for certain. I’ve done a lot of reading. Found everything from CP3 phasing to Cummins crimped thrust bearing, wrist pin, injector, I did a boost leak test through the turbo and the air was coming out the crankcase vent. I pulled the valve cover off and seems to be cylinder 6, I turned the crank roughly a quarter turn at a time putting more air to it thinking it could valve overlap, went from TDC 6 to TDC 1 at slight turns and didn’t make a difference. I’m at 182k runs strong builds boost, doesn’t seem to use oil, I cut open my last filter didn’t see and metal shavings. I’m puzzled and wondering if it’s valve related.

Update for you on my engine knock sound. Turns out it was a failing downstream NOx all along, that finally failed... Dealer said it was probably going bad for the last couple years and that is the reason for the terrible ticking sounds and knocking sounds I have been hearing for the last 10k+/- miles. But once it fully failed all the sounds got much worse, they replaced it and reset the ECU. everything seems fine now.
