Each year it seems the discontinued Sig P228 achieves a more heralded status. As one of the classic Sigs, it is deserving of these praises. My Sig P228 9mm dates back to 1994 when I ordered it directly from Gil Hebard guns (Knoxville, IL) and had it delivered directly to my doorstep in North Dakota for $600. Wow, what a deal. Of course that makes my P228 extra special to me. But the "compact" Sig's attaction runs much deeper. Like its slightly larger sibling and "Warrior Excellence" pistol the Sig P226, the P228 inherits its almost magical hitting capabilities. It can make even mediocre shooters (like me sometimes!) look good. It was ground breaking in its superb ergonomics which consist of a high tracton grip and ideal grip angle, superb 4.4 lb single action trigger, Von Stavenhagen sights, no nonsense cocking serrations, mag release, beveled mag well, and perfect balance. The P228 in its original form lacked my preferred squared trigger guard (like P226) in its forged aluminum frame but its absence detracts little from its capabilities. In hand the Sig P228 inspires a level of confidence that many pistols lack. It is supremely accurate and fast firing. Sig originated the barrel breech lockining into the slide (a variation of J. Browning's design) which is extremely reliable and, in unison with full length slide rails like the P210, responsible for this standard-setting accuracy. Although no longer impressive, its factory 13+1 capacity was ground breaking at the time as its single-stack brother the Sig P226/P6 only held 8 rounds. Back in the 90s, that feature alone made the P228 a fast seller. Current high quality MecGar magazines ramp up capacity to 16 rounds with a still-flush fit. The P228 of course accepts all Sig P226 mags like the especially cool Sig factory 20 rounders and MecGar 18 rounders (not flush fitting). Takedown was also innovative in these classic Sigs and I find no way in which it could be improved: no pulling of the trigger is necessary, simply rotate takedown lever after mag removal and safety check, and remove the slide. That simplicity has since found its way into other excellent handgun designs like the Springfield XD/XDM, CZ 75 polymer, S&W M&P series, and FN FNP/FNX pistols. Durability is long proven and widely acclaimed in law enforcement, military, protective detail, competitive, and civilian circles. The Sig P228 has served with distinction with the US Army, US Air Force, US Navy (SEALS), multiple Federal Agencies, police departments, and foreign militaries. This long term service has created a huge fan base of this original West German produced Sig P228. These guns possess unquestioned and consistent quality levels which resulted in this impressive track record. The Sig P229 is a similar gun and superceded the Sig P228. It is about 2 oz heavier and features a solid stainless steel slide that is CNC milled. This allows the P229 to handle the higher slide velocities of the .40 S&W and .357 Sig without increased recoil spring pressures which would make slide cocking difficult for many users. It too is an outstanding Sig and is a near twin of the P228. But I in 9mm chambering I prefer this P228, hands down. That's because it was built for that cartridge from the ground up, every component was made as size and weight efficient as possible. Its stamped-steel/pinned slide to me poses no significant downsides (maybe rust) and provides the owner with a user-serviceable breechblock. Perfect balance, accuracy, durability, and reliability and off the charts 2nd Kind of Cool. In the roles of recreational shooter, personal defense, primary sidearm, and now collectible, the Sig P228 is a Hall of Famer in the gun world and I predict its value and desirability will only increase over time. Mine's not going anywhere./////////////////Nutnfancy Likabilty Scale: 10 out of 10 (price considered)

I have a 1991 P228 that I have done a little work on. I switched it from DAO to DA/SA with a lighter mainspring for a lighter trigger pull. I put the newer Sig short trigger on it and a E2 grip (P229 E@ grip kit from Top Gun Supply). I love the stock bar/dot "Von Stavenhagen" sights. What a sweet shooter!

In Canada, we can buy a Norinco copy of the Sig 228. Its called the NP 34. It is a great gun! I felt bad buying a knock off but it cost $379!

@nutnfancy I'm one of those guys who does carry a "compact" gun (Glock 32) every day. I understand for a lot of people it can be a problem. For me though, it is just the right size. I feel when I'm wearing it, but am not uncomfortable. I like feeling the comfort of my sidearm on my side and it also helps ensure that I don't accidentally wander into a free-fire zone (mass-murderers welcome) while still armed. Just wanted to let you know I'm out here and carry "compact" (100% carriage rate)!

I love this review. The 228 was my first handgun purchase in the late 1980's so it holds a special place in my heart as well. Ergonomically it just felt better than anything out at that time and the SIG brand reputation for reliability was king. I love it! I don't shoot it as much these days either due to it potential value as a collectable. Now my Glock 19 is my main shooting go-to gun.

Got mine in 1998, ~$750. Mec-Gar 17rd mags I got in 2011 consistently fail to lock the slide back on empty. That was the only malfunction I have experienced. Thicker & heavier than some nowadays but I can hit with it. Love it. Never selling it.

I have a German made P228, too. An issue I had was the roll pins for the breech block in the slide drifting out a little under recoil. I used a center punch with a very fine tip and LIGHTLY peened the end of the inner roll pin at both ends to secure it against backing out again. I've put a lot of rounds through it since with no more issues. The finish on the slide leaves some to be desired and seemed to wear from holster contact pre-maturely I thought. Aside from that it's a really good shooter.

GREAT vid bro. Went to SIG for a shooter class last year and it was just amazing how accurate they are as well as just fun to shoot. You're absolutely right about it getting a by on the weight. You really don't even notice it and it helps the shooter stay on target while minimizing the recoil. GREAT for newer shooters for sure!! If I can find a 228, it'll be in my collection for sure...otherwise it'll be a 226 to sit next to my G23. Also another great gun. Thanks Nutn!

I learned about the M11 (Sig Sauer P228) from a David Baldacci book "The Forgotten" that I just finished reading, where his character Army special agent investigator and Ranger John Puller carries one. In the book it was just referred to as an "M11" so I looked it up. I liked what I read on their website and I liked your review on the P228 specifically. I find them easy to understand in general. I really like how you explain everything and show exactly what the gun can do and everything about it. I also really liked your review on the Walther PPS for the same reason. I liked how they both field stripped easy and without tools and how easy the controls were to get to.

On the newer roll pins, They really are not that hard to take out. But, big but, they only go out in one direction. They have a milled section that will only allow them to go out in one direction. I have both versions (226 solid pin -229 roll pin), and I would say the solid pin is only slightly more difficult to remove. The solid pin, has a rounded end, not allowing for a good punch placement and easy to damage the slide if you are not careful. Love the reviews, keep up the great work.

I just recently picked up my first handgun, went big and got a P228. It was either that or the CZ P-07, I went and shot about 200 rounds through it this weekend and haven't second guessed my choice once. It is like butter, the ergonomics are incredible.

Just a note about the firing pin positioning pin. The old German style roll pins are known to break. While the newer ones are quite difficult to remove (and I highly recommend not removing them because they can get stuck and are all but impossible to remove. I was hitting one with a 3 LB hammer that got stuck after about 1/8 inch movement and it would not budge) but the new style does not break.

Great Posting. My Agency still uses a 228 and despite how old and worn it is, it still rocks. It hasn't malfuctioned once for me. I primarily wear mine in a Comp Tac Minotaur IWB holster or a Raven Concealment OWB with a neutral cant. I haven't had a problem concealing it either wearing a suit or under a polo.

I was lucky enough to find a triple stamped West German made P228 about a year ago. It is my favorite carry gun. It is lighter than my P229 SAS and much lighter than my P226. It shoots great and I have not had a single malfunction. I do not like small handguns, so this one works well for me.

@nutnfancy I think it depends on where you are as to how many you can find used, I live in Oklahoma and we have a huge used gun market and good gunshows the combination of the two lead to alot of used p228s in fair to fine condition A fine example for $600 would be possible here with some haggling P.S. How is Allie doing?

Nutnfancy, i love ur channel. Finding a system for having your gun accessible in your car while driving can be very difficult. I found one that I like a lot and I think is worthy of a Nutnfancy tabletop. If u decide to review these type of items you should check out grassburr leatherworks. I use the nylon holster c-burr system with a side mount. It's rock solid, well built, and easily concealable. NUTNFANCY ROCKS

If you don't like putting rounds through your P228 (can't blame ya with a west german one) have you considered a P229? Almost the same... but if you do decide on that I suggest going with the pre-E2 P229. I absolutely HATE the new grips and style for the P229.

Hello Nut'n, I was considering selling my W. German P228 because I haven't used it at all since I bought it back in Apr 1993 (I've only put around 25 rounds through it). Then I saw your video and you may have saved me from making a regrettable decision! The reason I haven't used it is the same reason as sated in your video -- it's right in between the Glock 17 and Glock 26. I never thought of this until I watched your video. Thanks for slapping some sense into me :)

Thanks Nutnfancy. Because of this video I just purchased the new Sig M11-A1 and absolutely love it. Excellent review. The M11 has the extra rounds and the squared trigger guard you mentioned, which makes it an awesome go to war gun. If you get a chance to shoot one I am sure you would love it. It is an awesome gun. I picked up an all German p228 for $700. It had very minimal holster wear on it when I bought it and only a few tiny dings in the trigger guard. I've shot at least 500 rounds through it and will continue to do so. They really aren't as valuable or as hard to find as nutnfancy makes them out to be, but god do I love that gun and treat it better than almost any other possession I own.

@jerzypolmerski This is year three of TNP and at this point it has long been established that all the guns are safety checked. I just don't have time to spend on that, it breaks up the flow of my vids, and the viewer should rest at ease. I will do it however when triggers are pulled just like I do here. Thanks for your concern for me.

Fantastic review so far (11 min in), But there was no safety check on any of the four guns you put in frame (esp the p228 which was pointed in the vicinity of the camera). Hi Buddy, could you help me out please? First, can you tell me where I can get a chest rig for my brand new Sig P229 that I finally got after 20years of obsessing over? You made me think, did I fall in love with a 228 back in 91, or was it the 229? I took a break on having pistols, but got back in to them this summer, and after watching this review, you got me wondering was it the 228 or the 229 that started the dream of owning one.

Nutn, I just picked up a used W. German p228 for $550 out the door(the shop had it for $150 less than a used p229). With that savings I had planned on sending it out for the Sig Service Package with night sights. The gun does have a few scratches and I have noticed Sig will refinish your gun with a Nitron finish. Would this effect the value and if so would you recommend is that finish on par with duracoat?

I want to do OSI or NCIS Correcting you on others using it: Secret Service uses 229 in .367Sig, USCG uses 229 in .40s&w as well as NCIS. OSI and CID still use the 9x19 228. Overall looks like a solid gun

Brother I own one and love it. Got it as a graduation present before I shipped to basic. Great gun.

@Ianwrym The 2022 needs to see the light of day too...hmmm. I may not be as stoked about it though. I have shot it and it seemed like most other polymer DA/SA polymer pistols. Good value for the money.

Interesting. I'm wondering if a Sig SP 2022 review is in the works. I thought I saw you shooting one in another vid. I'm curious because I've seen them for sale at the local box store for less then 400 and I'm wondering if they are "bonafide". It kind of looks like a poly version of the 228.

@ckobash I'm a southpaw and I find all the controls on the Sigs to be quite applicable. It is very easy for me to manipulate the decocker and the slide release with me left index finger. In fact, being a lefty, I find the adjustment to be such a suitable challenge that, once mastered, I believe these particular guns to be almost made for the left hand. It's rather like a blind person who's sense of hearing is so fined tuned as to compensate for the loss of sight. DO NOT be discouraged. Goferit!

As the proud owner of a West German made P228, thank you. After watching this video I've officially retired mine to the gun vault. I was a little disappointed in doing that, as i shoot that better than I shoot my $1400 Kimber Gold Match II. Always a fan of your vids, keep them coming. And stay safe brother

How can we find out which models SIG "bobbled" on??? I have a P229 Stainless Elite. Exeter, NH. 2011. Heard any issue with this model?

I bought p228 two years back as my first handgun and I've been trying to find something that impresses me as much as my Sig in fashion, ergonomics, performance, and reliability. Suggestions for additional members to my collection are appreciated.

Just want to share a SIG story I heard. A gunsmith I know recently got a pistol into his shop to work on. A SIG in 9mm that is a duty weapon for a Reno Police Officer. The rail BROKE off of the frame, I mean a chunk the size of an old 50 cent piece just broke off. Sounds like a warranty repair right? Upon calling SIG directly to ask if the warranty covered the repair (which would really be a brand new frame) the representative said, and I quote "Not covered. Buy a new pistol." Bad form SIG.

I just started carrying last week "got my permit thanks to the great state of Pennsylvania". I carry my SIG 229 Elite Dark. Love the gun but it is NOT compact. In my opinion, it IS a full sized gun, like the 228 in my same opinion. But, it isn't too bad. Really depends on what clothing I am wearing.

I've been waiting for this for a while. I have a 228 2 tone with srt and enhanced trigger job. It is my favorite of the pistols that I own. It may actually be my gtw gun. When I combine the 6 mags from my 226 with the 7 mags from this one, that's 13 mags to throw down. The heel of the 228 fits my hand better than my 226r also. The 228 is such a smooth firing gun.

Cool!! My first choice. Would love to hear your views on the extraction system for that p228, the new p229 and p226. They seem different, at least in appearance. What's your thoughts?

Cool remember it's not the amount or type of gun, car or whatever all that matters to one who is a collector or one who is not and this it applies to everyone. Its what you like that matters the most. We all have different likes and dislikes etc. Yes most would love to have only the best but to me the best is only what you think is the best. I know people with 500-1000 gun collections and people with 5-10 and both are equally happy and to me that's what matters the most. Have fun and stay safe!

I have not like Sig in the past. I don't know what changed but I shot a p228 that one of my Unit buds brought to the last shoot out and that thing shotreal smooth and accuratly.

I own both. My opinion is they are both perfectly reliable and accurate. They both gobble up hot 9mm loads smoothly. Federal 115gr +p+ and Ranger Nato 124gr fmj. The SP2022 has a rail and I mounted an Insight light on it.

Second could you please do a review on how you lube your Sigs. Some people online run a whole bead of grease down the rails. I called Mill Com TW25b’s company, and they suggested rubbing the grease in to the point where you won’t see any visible grease when you’re done applying it. I want to hear what YOU THINK on the subject. Thank you, Jake.

So what is the advantage to having a decocker in a super ergonomic place like it is on a sig? I just don't really get why you need to be extra speedy to put your gun away.

Just saw one of these for sale at my local shop yesterday for $650 (condition a bit worse than nutnfancy's of course) I've been looking to get a Sig and have considered the 2022 because of its price point but should I spring for the used 228 instead? POU: having an extremely reliable, accurate, durable (possibly CCW) 9mm. What do you think guys?

At about 6:00 you said that a separate flashlight is an inferior system, why is that? I believe that a separate flashlight is a superior system in many ways, also when drawing the weapon in theory a rail notch may snag on your holster which would be inconvenient in a tactical situation (never had this happen to me personally, just a thought.) But if you don't mind could you either send a reply to me or make a video detailing how an attached flashlight is superior, I am sure others wonder as well

@nutnfancy Awsome vid Nutn! Navy aircrewen also carry it. I carried it as a squadron weapons escort in my last command, and issued them to my A/C when foward deployed as a ALSS Supervisor. Love this gun. In 2003 I ran across a used P228, and snached it up, for about 650 after taxes fees etc. I've put a couple thousand through it. I've wondered if it might become a collectable at some point, but regardless, I will never sell it. Sentamental I guess. Great gun Thanks nutn, God bless.

Stay humble Nut. No need to get into a back and forth with any viewer, just say thank you for the support because good or negative he's still commenting which in the end is a good thing for you. I hate it when the guys who's videos I love to watch get into it with their viewers... I know you're only human, but that doesn't mean you need to stoop to their levels. Keep doing what you do, obviously it's working! Don't worry about the ones that hate Nut, worry about the fans that support you.

I agree. I have no doubt that the 2022 is a reliable, quality firearm. I just prefer the looks of the 229 over the 2022, but the 2022's price point cannot be beat. And I actually prefer the 2022's takedown over the 229's. It's similar to my Jericho and, for now, I'd prefer redundancy and familiarity with my firearms over collectability. So my frugality wins. The 2022 will likely be the next purchase. Thanks for the comment. I've gotten some great feedback from fellow TNPr's.

Nutn I am stoked about this review I own a W German 228 that was made around the same time yours was! What can I say it shoots like a dream and the more it's shot the better it performs! Maybe it was just luck but mine happens to outperform almost any pistol it meets with the exception of a few very expensive 1911s.

Used P228s are showing up at gunshows like crazy I went to one two weeks ago and counted 30+ of them before I left with about three of the nicer looking ones all west German marked for $1500 total. Street price is about $500 to $750 these days if anyone was wanting to know. You do see some cheaper but they are crappy looking.
