Sensibility has become the driving factor behind why crossovers have come to take over the market, offering the right mix of practicality, utility, and value that families need. And there may be no more sensible choices in the midsize crossover market than the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, two vehicles from two Japanese brands known for making no-frills, reliable, sensible machines.
So in the battle for sensible supremacy, which of these two is a better purchase? There are plenty of factors to consider.

You neglected to mention that the Rav4 is blessed with a tried and true automatic and the CRV has the dreaded CVT transmission. Very important. That alone would steer me towards the Toyota.

Skotty kilmer did mention the transmission torque converter issue that caused jittering in the crv every once in a while, but they can still keep going and no need to change that if youre not too bothered by it for the ones who already own one, I'm thinking of going for the 2013 rav 4

Test drove both of these: for taller drivers and passengers, the Honda has less leg room on the passenger side. The seats were not as deep either, which is important for long trips. I also found the infotainment screen more convoluted. The reported engine oil mixing with gas issue is also not cool. Anyway, I got a RAV4 Hybrid, could not be happier.

Always love the cost comparison... Depends on options, Haiti all inclusive Top Model options which many people don't care about all the options. So it depends on what you want in the model you want. How about the base model comparison prices? That never seems to be mentioned much. I hate the high-end model comparisons... Which always seems to be the case here on RU-vid

Major issue with latter-day CRV models is a very badly designed direct gas injection system, which causes a lot of fouling of valves, and worse, dilution of oil with gasoline (by some reports, a very substantial amount of gas gets by the pistons and into the oil sump). Unfortunately, Hondas ain't what they used to be, and because I want my cars to last a long time, I will go with a Toyota any day. These reviews are not all that helpful as they tend to focus on gadgets and attributes of a brand new car, which says nothing about downstream maintenance and operating costs.

-Honda CRV has a CVT transmission which automatically disqualifies it from my list. Toyota & Honda prob make a better CVT than nissan (if they even make it). But CVT's aren't proven reliable in the North American Market. -If you want to keep the car past warranty, i'd be going Toyota 100% as it has a conventional auto transmission.

What about Toyotas reliability? Sure the RAV4 is an older vehicle without turbos but it is proven to last. Less moving parts equal less issues. 2016+ Honda still needs to show us that it still can be a reliable brand. Im willing to pay a little extra for peace of mind knowing that I will be driving a vehicle that will last and not have any issues.

After driving Honda Accord EX cars for 23 years, I "defected" to a RAV4 Limited Hybrid. I did so because both my mechanic and I have concerns about the longevity and cost to repair turbochargers such as that in the CR-V EX. (I keep my cars 10 years.) My wife's two Priuses have been totally reliable, so no concerns here with the Toyota Hybrid system. I probably would have gone for the CR-V EX had Honda continued to offer the AWD model with the trusty 2.4L engine. Hopefully, some long term data will prove the Honda 1.5L turbocharged engine to be just as reliable and my concerns unfounded. The RAV4 Hybrid does get better gas mileage, has a tad more HP and no turbo lag. I wish that I could pick things that I like both cars as if from a Chinese menu.

How can you possibly recommend the turbo on the CRV when Honda is having problems with fuel getting into the oil. In China they did a recall for this issue. Here in the USA they only provide an oil change. I will continue to avoid turbos, CVTs and direct injection like the plague. Call me crazy but I prefer long term reliability. For the record I own a 2015 Mazda CX-9 so I'm not a Toyota fanboy.

Man, I like the engine / fuel economy and then a little extra space of the CRV.. But definitely don't like the interior, never did of the Hondas in general. Honda seems to be better, but still going back to the Toyota from my preference right now. Trying to decide for this week. I have to drive the CRV yet though. Honda has always had to s*** hard seats to . if that changed. And when I did fix comparison that dealerships, Toyotas are a decent amount cheaper. And Toyotas reliability I believe is better also which is a huge thing to me

Well first off I appreciate you doing a review on the tow top selling suv segments in the industry. However you didn't give the right specs and when it comes to the front seat there is more head leg and shoulder room in the Rav4. The Rav4 also has a heads up display which gives the driver a safer way to use there phone and even see there nav display turning directions where the odometer is where the crv does not. When you are rating technology Rav4 also has more it gives and is even easier to use no matter the age. The honda is also a 6 speed transmission with an ability to lock in the differential to improve driving on bad roads. I like the fact you compared them but you were very one sided so i take it you are using only your opinion or you are not aware of how to use certain features that they both have.

Those additional parts don't have anything to do with lubrication. However those parts have to do with getting the engine warm up more quickly, which is what the problem is. For some reason this engine takes an abnormally long time to warm up. But what I can't figure out, is why it's so much worse on the CR-V than other Hondas with this engine (virtually nonexistent on the Accord). Why do you think that is?

Excellent review, Stephen! Accept it people... Honda is ahead of the curve when compared to Toyota, and historically always has been. Toyota consistently sells outdated designs at prices that aren't terribly competitive. Not saying they are bad cars, but Toyota is always too slow to adapt to newer technologies, and their interior designs are usually less than competitive. Win for Honda!

I play FPS games, fly FPV drones, and degrees in industrial design. I've got great 3D spatial awareness. I don't need cameras but my wife does - she already dinged it in a parking deck!

Did anyone notice that really nice volume button Honda decided to put back into the center stack. I have a 2017 Honda Accord and after living with this car for 8 months, I never realized how nice a circular volume button is. Damn you Honda. Awesome car by the way. However, with Honda's there's always a trade off. Honda makes the ugliest rims in the business. Everything else is awesome (minus the CVT).

ErwinSchrodinger64 I really don't like Honda's styling. I agree with you with the rims, and I hate the chrome bar grilles they put on everything. So ugly. I also don't like how they don't put a tune know so the dashboard is asymmetrical and doesn't look good

ErwinSchrodinger64 I have a 16 crv and I never use the volume control(touch) on the deck when driving. I only use the steering wheel control. It makes more sense, more convenient and safe.

ErwinSchrodinger64 the crvs wheels look like fidget spinner advertisements, but everything else, like you said, is nice.

CVT kills the CRV. Rav4 has better reliability and holds its value.

That was the most lopsided comparison ever. I wonder why you did mention about RAV4 hybrid?

I simply don't want to choose the Honda CRV since it has that 1.5L turbocharged engine. It sounds to me it will not last for a long time. I think Honda is going to the wrong direction regarding this engine and it will lose its reliability in the future.

The RAV4 does come with two USB slots in the rear. Also the safety systems are standard on all models, unlike CRV that charges $1500 for similar features. Auto high beam is standard on RAV4 not available on CRV.

Theres definitely 2 usb ports in the rear for the crv and honda sensing is indeed standard in the ex crv or higher. Plus. Dont listen to this guy. Honda sensing includes all the safety technology like collision mitigation, road departure mitigation, addaptive cruise control. And lane keep assistance. Also ex or higher gives you the blind spot monitors in the side view mirrors standard. And automatic high beams as well. Cloth heated seats. Remote start. Apple car play and android auto. Sunroof led front and tale lights. Fog lights. And a multi angle backup camera and a 4cylinder turbo engine. No brainer against the rav4. And thats all standard.

Uhh, how could you choose the RAV? Well, for no other reason than the main reason: Toyota is absolutely CRUSHING the competition in reliability. Toyota’s ENTIRE model line is above avg or excellent reliability. That’s certainly nothing you can say about any American automaker. Furthermore, Toyota has put significant distance between Honda and Subaru. There’s a reason the top 3 vehicles in America, for holding their value, are Toyota (tacoma, tundra and 4runner). So, if you want a vehicle with some SLIGHT advantages and worse reliability- knock yourself out. I’ll keep buying Toyota and stay out of the shop.
