You, again. First on Doug Demuro and now RegularCars to.You're simply a big car enthusiast, I thought you just enjoyed motorcycles. Anyway stay awesome Cmilk.
It's up there with that stupid goddamn Transformers badge you see on Camaros. Really? You're going to infantilize yourself by putting a toy emblem on a real car?
People who put Ä, Ö, or Ü in words where they don't belong are fucking dumb. Same goes for the backwards E because apparently it's a German letter?! Also there is no German flag on a real license plate, only the European Flag with the corresponding country code. TL;DR GET A REAL FUCKING GERMAN LICENSE PLATE IF YOU WANT ONE SO BAD, YOU FUCKS!
Nah, backwards E isnt a german letter. You can only use that when you're R3411Y 1337. We've got the ß though. Never miss out on that one. Especially when you write only capital letters. Which is the one case we never use it. Because there is no capital ß. Russians have sort of a backwards E, but it more resembles an actual 3.
once i saw it was a VW i instantly hated the owner of this car you ameriacns have can't even begin to imagine how arrogant and hateful vw owners in europe are, they act as if every car owner of another brand is inferior trash
@Rabbi Stealinshekels Goldshekels GOOD OLD UK DOES REQUIRE IT £85 FINE IF IT'S IN THE WINDOW yes, please take more of my money for SPEED CAMERAS. Everyone drives a Civic or a Fiesta, NO ONE IS GOING OVER 110 on a motorway JUST DITCH THE CAMERAS AND BRING IN THE AUTOMBAHN ON THE M4. CARDIFF TO LONDON IN 2 HOURS AT 165 MILES AN HOUR.
Mr. Regular has this thing where he has no trouble with many complex words, but when attempting to pronounce certain trade names and proper nouns he butchers them. I find it endearing, and also confusing.
I come from a family of GTI lovers... from driving the OG, the special edition mark IV, V, VI and VII... the GTI has only improved in tech. The original GTI was purely analog and I recall stories from my dad about how he used to beat V8 trans-ams at the track. At it's foundation, it's still the sport option of a base car, and as it's aged, the speakers have improved and the rims have enlarged. It's only downfall is that other cars caught onto the formula of the GTI and now it's a competitive market.
My grandmother has a GTI. Know why? Cause she likes the plaid seats. Didn't know what the car was when she bought it, just 1) it's a VW, and 2) it has plaid seats.
Luke, my 81 year old mother, who has great-grandchildren, had an shiny '98 LeSabre for 19 years, but it died last week. She bought a Buick Lacrosse. I asked her if she liked the 18" wheels and 300 hp. "I just liked the color."
OMG, this entire comment thread is hilarious! My parents are also old and I have to explain to them every single week how cell phones work. They have the ones with physical large buttons that were popular in the early 2000s too. I'd be scared to have them drive anything remotely modern or powerful.
Another cool thing about the plaid seats is even though they are cloth they still have a heated seat feature. I don't know what other cloth seat is also heated, so it's pretty unique.
XxDEMONxDONUTxX I don't think it was that unkind, he was also pretty kind to the Audi S4, which also has a soundaktor, I know because I own one and used software to shut it off. Lol
Its the German Coat of Arms on top of a German flag. I know its stylistic choice, but if he wanted it to be more German then he should have had the image be the twelve European Union stars with the D below it for Deutschland.
From an engineering perspective the plastic oil pan makes sense because it will not get rusted out from salt on the roads. I've had my gti for over 3 years and never had an issue with it. Great car.
I sold VWs for almost a year after I moved across country so here's some input. 1. The DSG is more fun to drive than the 6spd. Obviously this is subjective, but I don't like short shifters and so I didn't enjoy the manual gearbox as much as I should have. Also, I dunno why, something about flicking the paddle and having it instantly downshift is fun, there's also slight burbles from the exhaust when you upshift which is also kinda nice. The DSG is also similar in design to the Porsche PDK gearbox. 2. The speaker is so fucking tiny, it's job is really just to amplify the sound of the engine. If nobody mentioned it was there to you, you'd just think the engine was noisier than normal. If you don't like it, like Regular said, just snip it. 3. The Performance and Autobahn Edition's power increase is a lie. On a dyno, all trims of the GTI make about 230-235hp. 4. People buy GTIs not because they are the fastest or most powerful, but because they are generally more refined and more comfortable daily drivers then say a Focus ST or Civic Si. 5. The Mk.7 Golf in general is a damn near perfect car. A manual TDI Sportswagen is pretty much the perfect daily runabout.
"Golf in general is a damn near perfect car".. Haha, biased much?? Don't get me wrong, Golf's a nice enough compact car.. Nice drive and ride, probably class leading interior.. But VW's reliability track record leaves much to be desired. Enough to strike it down from being "damn near perfect" anyways.
Stop talking bullshit like so much other people on YT.. all of our fleetcars are from the vw group, most of them with dsg and a lot of miles on the clock.. never had real big problems besides normal maintenance..
No, it's not "talking bullshit" it's the truth. Pretty common knowledge that VW's reliability record is a bit dubious. Always love the Euroguys and American car guys defending their unreliable cars with the old "maintenance" line. Ultimately guys, yes, you can keep a car running forever if you keep replacing part after part after part on it... But just remember, one man's "maintenance" is another's "car is in and out of the shop!"
bliglum if a brand has huge succes.. the negative stories always gets blown up dude.. FACT! Remember when the Prius has had that gaspadel problem in the states..? People were like; “yeah.. Toyota isnt that reliable brand anymore.. bla bla” same story..
It's Torx (torques/'torks') with a fucked-up accent, or with the ignorance that this channel all too often passes on as knowledge, from what I can tell. Maybe it's some new form of Torx head though?
On my ST we had to just drop the undertray when a socket fell down there. There's enough room to get your arm to the bottom, but if whatever you've dropped rolls too far backwards, you are pretty much required to take the undertray off.
Hearing Mr. Regular pronounce torx as "tore-ex" is a bit like hearing a longtime friend pronounce gif as jif...except more wrongerer. Just when you think you know someone...
fofalooza If you pronounce gif in a way that sounds like give because the g stands for graphical, then you need to start pronouncing laser as “lay-sir” because the s stands for stimulating, not ztimulating.
It is a bit odd NO ONE mentions simple chip tunes when looking at GTIs. I completely understand not taking tuning into account when reviewing cars generally, but VW turbos are aching to be cranked. Doing so is a central tenet of their following. Chips and refinement are the most compelling reasons to buy a GTI over anything in its class. APR claims "381 ft-lbs of torque and 316 horsepower with 93 AKI octane fuel" on this motor. I've not driven a MKVII but I had a MKIV 1.8t with an APR chip and gained 55hp and 65ftlbs in 2002 and it ran with zero problems for 10 years and 80k miles. I replaced the clutch once. The motor can deal.
Am I alone, but did Mr. Regular get a tiny bit more intense on this one? Either way he did his usual great job of making me have a small existential crisis about cars I'll never drive.
Mr Regular should get a day job, car reviewing, and a night job comedienne, and realize he's not very good at either. Maybe lose his wire snippers and get a life!
Is anyone else bothered by the fact that he gave him the keys to a car that uses push to start, even when he was sitting right next to him, and he immediately put the keys into the cup holder?? Like, why...
Its not even a Euro plate. German plates don't look like that at all. The backward E is from the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet and the double umlaut ( ö ) makes it read like "Deadpoeoel". It's just a train wreck.
The Focus ST is a great car, but the exterior and interior styling are so tacky and ridiculous. The Golf's styling inside and out is so much more elegant and understated. And that steering wheel, what a great design.
Nitesh Kumar, that is part of the whole "shtick" of the show, the car either floors mr. Reg by how incredible it is or the owner gets compared to whatever shortcomings the car has.
DRIVING A STICK SHIFT IS NOT AN ACHIEVEMENT. My girlfriend was able to drive my WRX around a neighborhood within 5 minutes of practice. Its not difficult, or special, or a bragging right. Nobody should buy an auto because "they can't drive a stick". Literally anybody can learn.
Yeah, I'm going to disagree with the engine sound fiddling being equal. The ST has a tube which allows induction noise to be heard in the cabin. This is noise which would otherwise be heard if there was less soundproofing of the cabin. The GTI has a freaking speaker which plays a false engine noise. True they can both be disabled easily but they are worlds apart in intent and level of deception.
Great cars but $$$$$$ that's what pushed me to my 17 WRX... sorry I tried to buy VW but you a pricy girl with less power and most importantly to me, no AWD
Sometime down the line, that Sounddakor is going to go wrong, it's going to rattle and buzz, and someone is going to think there is something seriously wrong with their car, and probably get bent over by a dealership.
Nah, not an issue. It's not a speaker actually; it's just a vibrator for the windshield. I like that thing for a very good reason: I don't have to hear it, unlike the lame "race" exhausts some idiots put on to feel better about themselves. Noise inside, silence outside.
Wow. So did you like the GTI or not? There is so much tongue-in-cheek in the video....but I feel like you liked the car. I have a 2016 GTI with the 6MT transmission and I love it.
Fun fact. Most of these cars dyno'd at 220-230 whp stock. With the stages 1 ecu remap (which at the dealer doesn't void the warranty even on stock clutch) it's kicking out over 300whp
And it's front wheel drive in a car that weighs nothing, more horses you put to your front wheels the worse your steering gets, plus the tires on these cars are not wide enough to really put that sort of power to the road anyways, they are based off economy cars FFS. I bet if you take the stock tune and the stage one tune around a normal track you'd see little to no difference and the higher horsepower one could infact have a worse track time. Hell at the price of the GTI you can get a couple year old Taurus SHO that's only has a few thousand miles on it and that car will kick the shit out of the GTI and ST. That car is pushing V8 levels of power.
FuzzyCholo yea tbf that's quite a good point. Golf r would put down the power much better and the standard pirelli p7 are pretty crap. But imo the extra power is still Hella fun
+Charles Du the Golf GTI is only 25ish grand fairly well loaded, it's cheap, thats only five grand more then a *BASE* Civic EX. a *new* Taurus SHO starts at 42.
Bought a used mk7 GTI a couple months back and it's the perfect daily. A lot of enthusiasts here in NZ prefer the mk6 as it's cheaper, leaving more money to tune. Also I don't get the "manual is for real men" sentiment being thrown around car communities. People are too nostalgic in my opinion.
The soundaktor isn't because exhaust baffles are expensive, the Golf R has both, it's because the cars have become so well sound dampened that in order to make the exhaust loud enough to be satisfying on the inside it becomes obnoxious on the outside.
lol, someone forgot to remove the factory plastic wrap from the GTI logo on the Steering wheel. P.S. I still do not care for the DSG, because it is not a manual.
You know, I liked this video. I had just bought this car. Then I didn't. The Soundaktor made great sense. Now I do. Cut it. This car should be quiet, lovely. This car is very fast, very fun, VERY efficient, very cheap to own. I have a sprinter with BT 4A-GE: harmonious. Soundaktor: Vomit. Get yourself an open element intake for some psh and just love the AMAZING calm that this car brings to speed.
GTI is really cheap to tune. I went stage two (catted down pipe and tune) for $1,500 after tax and installation costs and my car now makes 330hp and 370 lbs/ft. I think a focus ST costs around $1,300-1,900 for stage two and you only make 240hp and 330 lbs/ft.
VW knows it's customers with the GTI. You see when you get married, you want a fast and fun car wile your wife wants you to get something quiet with 4 doors good safety features and good reliability. Enter the GTI, the compramise car that can check all of her boxes wile being at least a bit sporty and fun for you.
Mr regular mad about the torq bits you need. Just wait, you’ll also need triple square. Then you find out that to even put new lowering springs on you’ll need to replace a bolt because it’s “torque to yield”
Mr Regular need an unlimited access to Jay Leno's garage and review every single car Jay has stored. Or any guy with many car like Salomondrin and Shmee
0:10 "Oh, sweet, my Uber is here" Pretty much 75% of my Uber rides have been in a Volkswagen Golf or Passat. Apparently Uber rents these cars out to people who don't have a car to drive with if you're over 25.
Gotta love everyone raging about the front plate: "WAAAAAAAAAHHHH! STOP DOING SOMETHING *I* DON'T LIKE WITH *YOUR* PROPERTY! WAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!! (Assorted car-nerd-internet-rage-noises)"
I got a Mk7 GTI just about a month ago. Re-watched this video, and I now describe it as "truth". I love the car but I am trying to work up the courage to disconnect the Soundaktor. If not, I might get a vagcom or OBD11 thingy and disable it that way. The upside is, in Normal mode it sounds fine. Anyway, love the car, and to be honest, this video originally helped spark my interest in it.
just unplug it wire and cut the muffler off. Only drones when going uphill at highway speeds, cost me $100 bucks and sounds great, get an intake too completely transformed the personality of the car without being obnoxious
I find your udder hatred of VWS hilarious. I could never figure it out and as I drove up to Pottsville more and more I realized why. Vws are to your area as hondas are to the suburbs of Philadelphia.
The GTI is better to modify than a FOST hands down. A GTI with a simple tune will make a tuned ST look stupid. ST has a tiny turbo and the EA888 gen 3 is a better engine too
Never quite got this, what is the point of tuning these stupid little hatches, the price point of both these cars bring you to get a two old Taurus SHO with 20K on it's clock, and that car makes mincemeat out of the hatches, that car pushes 435 HP with just an easy tune.
Redneck Fury the SHO is a tank. Depending on which trim you get, the MK7 can weigh ~1400lbs less. With a downpipe and tune (>$1000) they make over 300whp. I’m sitting at 315whp and 360wtq on a mustang dyno on my e40 tune. Power to weight ratio is far superior on the MK7’s.
If you want a hot hatch with a good auto and automanual mode that is euro-trash but is fast and has 4wd...get a ford era volvo xc90 with either the v8 or turbo engine. ;p We had a salvage title one in the family, held on for years with almost no work. Got rid of it cuz the turbo bearings went out and it's back on the streets.
