2017 Yamaha MT10 SP Review : In this video I review the quite simply brutal Yamaha MT10 SP, this takes the already awesome naked MT10 and adds Ohlins semi active suspension, a full colour TFT screen and a fancy paint job to name but a few....(in the US this bike is of course known as the FZ-10 SP)...
Thanks to Sam and the guys at Brian Gray Powersports in High Wycombe for making this review possible.

I've just bought an MT10 SP, but I've not picked it up yet. Your mini-review here has been bittersweet......I'm so glad you love the bike and have rated it highly, but it's made the wait for mine that little bit more agonising than it was before watching!! Love your videos, keep up the good work, and have lots of happy (and safe) riding!!

One of the best reviews you've ever done. I have the 850 Tracer but this one seems to offer a new level. When you carry out a review like this to concentrate you seem to be travelling slower than usual. This one however gives the impression of a very high rate of knots. Thanks again.

I took a standard MT10 out for a an hour or so ride a few weeks ago and was completely captivated by THAT sound! It's fabulous and I now know why the fuel consumption is so poor. All you want to do is to keep bollocking this bike. As this was a dealer's demonstrator(thanks Skellerns of Worcester), I left the suspension set up as it was, but I found the front suspension needed softening a little on the spring rate as there wasn't such a good feel under heavy braking on the somewhat rough back roads of Herefordshire. After an hour and a quarter, I also now know why they have offered a 'comfort seat', as an option. It is needed. I have decided, that come spring, I will buy one, but I will probably go for the touring model, because not only do you get the comfort seat, you also get the small screen and panniers. This bikes handles pretty well(once set up to suit) and that bonkers engine!

I've been waiting for you to ride the 10. I have an "ordinary" MT10 and it is by far the best thing I have ever bought. I will be 68 next month and when riding this bike I'm a teenager again. Hopefully with a little more self control. I envy you the British roads as i live in Western Australia and the road surfaces require some consideration. Te "lost for words" syndrome doesn't go away with time. Cruise control is a great asset.

Regarding gas mileage, I'm averaging about 28.5 (US) since I bought the Mt-10 just after seeing this review. -That should be an answer for some and, that's not with me tearing around very often - just everyday driving. I've had two Tuono's and can say the range is about the same but mpg may be a bit less because I believe this tank is larger. Would you want to sport tour on this bike with that gas mileage? It certainly has the comfort of my last bike, the SuperDuke 1290 but, that puppy had 2/3rd better gas mileage. The seat is firm but I like it for daily use. Even though it has so much power, I am not "grinding my teeth" in frustration around town like I was on the SD. This is silky smooth and lighter to maneuver. I especially like to change down the power mode in the thick of traffic. It works perfectly there, allowing a progressive "roll on" at the throttle. That's nice too when you want to enjoy the scenery. Some days it just stays in three (rain?) but big fun is just a mode switch away instead of a different bike away. -Jonnyallover

Great review sir, I completely agree with all your comments, I've owned one these great machines since early March and covered 2500 miles so far. Didn't hear you mention the cruise control, helps me keep to the speed limits on the motorways. Another comment mentions fuel consumption, since hitting 2k miles I'm getting 45 mpg.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yes my error, i should have mentioned the cruise control, great addition....I also liked the proper switch gear rather than those flimsy PCB ones you seem to get a lot of these days.....
@kpk500
@kpk500 7 лет назад
Yes, for my bike when brand new the fuel mileage was in the 30's (UK gallons) but now much better. Using a GPS to measure distance & the pump at the service station to measure fuel quantity. However, I didn't buy the SP for its fuel economy.
@jamsxr
@jamsxr 7 лет назад
Tom Slak I think the poor fuel economy might have something to do with MotoGP derived, crossplain, ultra high performance engine. Having 183% of your HP with 71% of your fuel economy seems like progress to me. Stick with your 1983 FJ750MT if it's mpg you're after 😜
@jamsxr
@jamsxr 7 лет назад
AussiRider edited my previous response for your benefit. What bikes are these you speak of?
@jamsxr
@jamsxr 7 лет назад
AussiRider my Tuono 1100 goes between 25 and 35 depending on riding conditions.... Not sure where your getting your figures from. If your moaning about a 2/5 mpg extra on a 160 bhp bike, you've bought the wrong bike. Also, SuperDuke and BMW riders are getting between 35 and 40 mpg, you've already said you're getting 45...

Tried the MT10 yesterday and absolutely loved it, interestingly my last bike was a V Strom, and the seating position is very similar, the power is much different, raw power in every gear with the 10, but like a pussycat in traffic, and a delight in town or busy traffic, i love the look of the MT's but always feel the naked bikes need a bellypan for the aesthetics.

At the end 10 is my final choice. I got her 1 week ago, and she is absolutely a fantastic machine. Superduke is a lovely bike, but I just can't stand the vibration above 7k. Hope you will pick up your bike soon.

I'm not in the market for one ChairmanBaao, but it is fun riding all these great machines and comparing them - I'm with you, the MT10SP is the best naked I've ridden so far (just my opinion of course)...thanks for watching and breaking your silence at last! - TMF

The Gaist van with the funny camera on the roof was a road condition mapping vehicle. Another application of super wizzy new technology that made the MT10 so much fun. Hope your favourite local twisty road gets a better surface as a result (but don't hold your breath).

Finally getting around to test riding one tomorrow. I like the styling, it works in a way the new CB1000R just doesn't for example. The front brake does seem to come in for some criticism but for me only question marks are seat comfort (i suspect I'll go straight for the 'comfort seat', though i think this is just a money making wheeze) and fuel consumption / range. The killer though is that engine noise and i think it is that, above almost everything else, that has people hooked.

OK I've finally bought an MT-10. I didn't get the SP because I got such a mega deal on mine. 2016, one owner, full yamaha service history, low milage, brembo master cylinders, braided hel lines. 8k. Goes like stink. Thanks for the amazing review, it pointed me in the right direction.

Great upload. Never liked the looks but the SP finish just seems to take it up a level, I actually think this looks good. Shame it does not have the M50's. All of the current crop of super naked bikes (KTM, Aprilia, BMW and Yamaha) are confident inspiring in my opinion, and seem to win every rider over. I'm not sure if they are that rewarding to ride as they make it all so easy, but who cares when they're that much fun. If it was that good, surely with a stable of your caliber, you would make room ;) Maybe try the Aprilia first, for me and many others it's the winner and undoubtedly the best performing - shame they are overlooked by most consumers for the big brands.

Ive revisited this review as i have an opportunity to buy a new MT10SP and seeing this excellent review has been helpful. The problem is i already own a standard MT10, so is it worth upgrading? Looking back i don’t think I’ve seen you ride so fast on any other reviews!😉 I don’t really want anything other than Yamaha either as in my opinion they make the best engines. Decisions Decisions 🤔

I'm not entirely keen on the looks of it but having ridden one a couple of months ago, I quickly forgot them tbh. It's just a beast of a bike where you can open it up but I found it quite civilised round town and handled like my street triple on the twisties.

Good review. I test rode the s1000r and standard mt-10 last year and felt the opposite way to you, in that the r was a better bike. At least the mt-10 splits opinion on looks (I like it) whereas the s1000r doesn't split opinion, it's 100% pig ugly!

Yamaha have used SP a number of times over the years. It all started in the 80's with TZR and YZF models - the SP versions being the road going versions of the race bikes. Acronyms are usually what we expect them to stand for... except the Lexus LC500 (not 'luxury coupe') which stands for Lexus Challenge - to produce a car exciting enough to never feature the word 'boring' in the same sentence... apparently :-D

Good review. I'm sure there will be a market for this but I'm still negotiating the power of the 847cc Yamaha engine before I can consider a bigger bike. Not for me at the moment, and you'd have to take the XSR out of my cold, dead hands. :)

The SP must be a Mega Bike because the original MT is an amazing piece of kit to ride !!!.. Cheer's.

Hi there; what was your average speed in getting the 160miles range. Im planning to get this bike but ive see reviews stating the real fuel range is between 100 to 120miles and that is really bad. What was your riding style in getting 160miles?
@badger4361
@badger4361 6 лет назад
I love the MT10, I bought one thinking, 'if I really like it, then I could upgrade to an SP' And yes I do love my MT10. But it raised an unexpected realization. I actually don't need an SP because I'm actually completely happy with the MT10 the stock suspension is great, and adjustable, make it hard, make it soft, whatever your flavour. I would dearly love a super duke 1290, and I'm a massive KTM fanboy, but I weighed up the pricing and I was lucky enough to get a 2017 MT10 with 600 miles on it for just over 9 grand. Its the performance bargain of the decade, OK the levers are a bit cheap and you can see it's built to a price, but who cares its superb all day long. It's a very steady bike and gives you good confidence, it's not nervous when the front end gets light (unlike my 98 blade which is more like an underpant soiling simulator), not a fan of the bridgestone tyres though, but some people like them, maybe it's a climate thing, i think I will swap those out for Metzelers, Michelins or Dunlops.

Thanks for the great review.. I have a gs like you do and keep looking at the Mt. The only thing I really don't like is the shocking fuel range and mpg. After the gs I think it would really annoy me as it's my only bike and main transport..

@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Yes there's no doubt it's not as practical as the mighty GS, but it is still pretty practical as high performance machines go....

amazing review as usual, thank you for this review, its really clears my mind about this bike, as you know i have a Ktm super duke 1290 Gt, probably will PX it to this lovely bike. One question though, how was it compare to Ktm superduke GT? obviously its a 4 cylinder and ktm is V2 :) Just asking the quality of finish , comfort, ease of use ETC. One thing was very interesting while you about to stop near the pub i can really hear the bike ticking over like a V4 or V2 that crossplank really got alot of character even sounds like it has. good review sir ;)
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 7 лет назад
Thanks Tan - Yes loved the character of this bike, it was a few weeks ago since I rode the Superduke so I would need another go to be sure, but I think for me the MT-10SP was more of a thrill ride whilst still retaining excellent road manners and ease of use - it's a close call though....
