I am so excited to review the 2017 Yamaha YZ250X. This bike has been a joy and pleasure to own and to ride. It is so great to have a two stroke alternative to the KTM and Husky lineup. Yamaha took a dirt bike that they were still producing for the motocross world and gave it some slight modifications to make it a really great option for off road riders. This dirt bike is great for enduro riding. This bike is great for single track riding. This bike could still do really well if you took it to a motocross track. This is bike is awesome. To date, I have not ridden a bike that is more fun that the YZ250X. It’s superb. It may not be as well rounded as my 2017 KTM 300 XC for as many things, but it’s just as fun to ride, and better in some areas.
Yamaha is doing more for the off road dirt biking world than Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki combined. I say this because they were the first to take KTM head on with their YZ250FX and YZ450FX. Those truly are four stroke, off road racing dirt bikes. Now, they have also given us the two stroke 250X off road racing bike. They are not sitting back on the sidelines watching KTM and Husky just eat up more and more of their dirt bike market share. They are fighting back against the Austrian Dirt bike brand and doing a good job at it. Bravo Yamaha.
There is so much to love about this dirt bike. I love that it’s so light. I love that it’s raw. The suspension is superb, and the frame of the bike keeps things really balanced. Sure, there are a few things that I’d like to change:
The clutch isn’t as good as the hydraulic clutches I’ve gotten used to. The clutch is the biggest let down for me on this bike. It’s hard to modulate the clutch and not take all the power from the rear wheel. It’s not just easy to get that little bit of power back to the wheel, because you end up taking too much all at once.
I would like it to have a little more low end power. Some of this could be remedied by simply lowering the 1st and second gears a touch. I really love where 2nd and 3rd gear is on this bike so I haven’t put a different size sprocket on it. You could also add a flywheel weight, but I haven’t done that either because I love how free revving it is in it’s stock form.
Third, I’d add electric start to the bike, if it could be added without butchering the overall feel of the bike and adding more than a couple of pounds. For the most part, I didn’t miss E-start, but there are some situations where e start is as good as gold, like when you stall it on a hillside.
Lastly, we need a bigger fuel tank on this bike. It’s only got the 2.1 gallon tank and frankly that isn’t enough. It needs to be at least a 2.6 gallon tank to be a serious off road dirt bike.
Other than those things, I think this bike is a home run and I love it. I recommend that if you are on the fence on this bike, get off the fence! It’s awesome and I think you will love it as much as I do.
Special thanks to my $10/month patrons!

Still, I'd love to see them modernize the YZ like the rest of the world is doing. 1. Hydraulic clutches are better. 2. The 250x lacks the low end grunt of the betas and huskies, making the really technical stuff harder, and making the bike easier to stall. 3. Since it stalls so easily, it would be nice to have an electric start. Maybe if it didn't stall so much, I wouldn't mind not having an E-start. 4. If this is really a woods bike, upgrade the stator so that people can run a headlight, or even offer a factory optional headlight. Just a few minor optimizations would make this YZ a bigger winner. The suspension is already great.

I have owned the YZ250X since November, (6 months as of this post) my friend and neighbor who bought one and we can't say enough good about it! A few things I have added to the bike that really enhanced the experience.. 1- Lectron carb... all I can say is you won't regret it! the fuel economy increase is insane, we used to go through a tank of gas in a riding day and need to add to it, now we never get low enough to be the reserve. the response is increased greatly, the smooth power delivery is excellent and the ability to go from cold to hot with big elevation changes and not need to worry with jetting, set it and forget it! since installing the Lectron carb I have yet to need to change a plug, have ridden in the mountains and on the first with zero adjustments needed and the bike just flat out performs! 2- FMF Gnarly Pipe and turbine core 2.0 spark arrestor. this allows us to ride on State parks here in NC, and wow did it increase the low and mid range and allow for exceptional lugability in technical tight technical terrain. it also increased the overev a little and felt smoother up top. ighly recommend it if you are doing woods trails you will really appreciate the bump in low end tractorability. 3- Twin Air filter, not sure I noticed any gains here but I'm sure they would be small if it did. After those mods I feel like this bike is an incredible companion to negotiate about any riding location and it feels stable and confidence inspiring in every situation I've gotten myself into. it truly likes the flowing woods trails and begs to be ridden at a fast pace, it loves to be tossed around at at your every will while in the woods and is dead stable wide open in 5th in the open areas. the power is excellent and delivered predictably. come out of a right turn, Hammer the throttle lift the wheel and float over whoops. I used to get neutral on accident, but that has since stopped, not sure if I adapter or the trans has broken in, but it's a very rare occurrence now days. starts easy cold or hot, but an egg hectic start would be nice for side Hill restarts. to me the clutch feels light and feathery and I use a single finger for it without issue. I have felt a ktm hydraulic and it is lighter, but not by much, not enough that i'd spend the money to change it. I didn't like the peg take angle but fastway adjustable pegs cured that. the seat does get uncomfortable after several hours of riding, but I'm a bigger guy and that might not be an issue for most. all in all I am thrilled with the total overall package of the bike and I look forward to every chance I get to go riding!

Hi Kyle I'm all the way from south africa .. love your channel man. Especially this video 😂😂. I bought a yz 250 in 2007 brand new and only did trail with it. Did do some mods weighed flywheel, Hydrolic clutch, suspension setup, long range fuel tank, full fmf gold series pipe, jetting and a 52 rear sprocket ,18 inch back wheel. The bike is 13 years old and still runs like hell never had a problem. Finished every race . Will never trade it for anything. Maby after your video upgrade to the 2020 model. Enjoy guys

What... $ 11K machine and this much grief.... Anyways... Still own it and it is being repaired as we speak, but, I purchased a new 2018 Yamaha YZ 250X and I can promise you from riding my entire life... At 42 years of age this is the BEST BIKE I have ever owned.... Keep preaching Kyle... Everything you say about this bike is correct, but, what an AWESOME MACHINE.... !!!! Hey Kyle, Yamaha owes you money. I bought the 250x last week and couldn't be happier. I must say your description of the nuances while riding the blue rippah are eerily accurate. Its easy to draw more low end out of it as well. Mototassinari, fmf and stealthy will make it a 300xc eater. Thanks for the review. It saved me $3000 over its ktm counterpart. Not that the 17 orange xc machine isnt amazing cuz it is but, I got a blue smile. It makes me want to rip every day! Oh, the neutral shift issue is shifter location. Just needs an aftermaket with a slightly longer shaft and conventional tranny oil. The stock tubes are redik! I run michellin ultra heavys with an mt16 120. No problem.

I have the 2017 yz250x and love it! My last bike, yz250f, had the same neutral issue as well, so I'm used to it. It can be annoying but I've adjusted to it and it doesn't happen to often anymore. I dialed in my suspension, put on a magura hydraulic clutch, zipty 3.2 tank, fmf gnarly/ turbine core 2, enduro engineering skid plate, HD tubes, and cycra probend hand guards. Being a long time yz rider I don't see how I could be any more comfortable/ a better rider on a European style bike. When the snow melts I'm going to be trying different gearing for the steep idaho technical trails. Great video and great channel! I'm happy to see someone talking up the bike and not just saying "it's just the same old yz250 blah blah blah..."

I've been racing my 2016 250x in local hare scrambles and trails for the past year and found the 13t front sprocket and 11oz flywheel weight with the tubeless kit turn it into an absolute tractor. For your fuel tank size problem too I found the IMS 12l tank fits great. I found moving the forks up about a 1/4" in the triple clamps really helped in cornering in the tight stuff. Fun Video that brings back 12,000 rpm old school 2 stroke days for me. My YZ slipped out of gear into nutrual while going over triple jump, bad day for me. Life flight, woke up in hospital, but back on race track within weeks. Young MX'ers are crazy
@sunnysacto
@sunnysacto 7 лет назад
Question everything. Triple was coming out of a sharp turn and not a great distance, perhaps 60 feet. My buddy's and had no issue clearing in second gear. It was easy spot to pass during open practice when novice wouldn't keep speed in turn to set up for triple. Correct, 9k rpm on 250cc 2 stroke. 125 cc is near 12,000 rpm. I often had both. I would also clear that triple on 125, but I had to carry full speed in tight turn and shift body weight toward front wheel to get more blast off ramp power to make it. I Raced MX 14 years in sunny CA. Enjoy!

Thanks. Appreciate the good review of the X. I am a Senior class rider and grew up riding all types of 2 strokes in the 70's,80's. Its funny if i really think about it now. That first ride on a real good handling 2T bike back then was all it took to be hooked for life. I still like modern 4T bikes too though. My favorite was a KTM450exc, being barely street legal to get to the good trails out here in the East. I'm in the over 50 class now and you are really making me want to go back to a light fun, smaller engined 2T bike. Face it I was faster on my smaller 2T's in the woods than I ever was my big bore 4T's. Most would agree with me on that I'm sure that have been riding a long time..Great video...oh big agreement on a factory skidplate. Most aftermarkets I have used aren't really made to look and fit that model your riding. I cased out a DRZ400 years ago with an aftermarket and cracked the center case....ugh!! It was a fun day up until then..No wreck and I got it home in a hurry,,leaking oil all over...bummer..It was the way it bolted to the bike that ruined the case which is my point on an OEM skidplate made to fit that model. Excellent point for all manufacturers.

I have been debating between the 250x and the motocross version. the x has lower compression which would take away the quick snap of the motor getting on the pipe. I have had many yz 250 and love them but i like a motor that is quick to get on the pipe. plus i am wondering how the transmission does compared to the motocross version when rode back to back.

Great wrap up video Kyle, You've done a great job showing the attributes of the YZ 250 X as well as sharing with all of us and hopefully Yamaha what an off-road bike should have. Again, great job on this series of videos!! I am really hopeful I'll see you roll out on a RR 300 race edition Beta soon as I believe these bike while maybe a little heavier on the scale will prove to surprise you. a little more than the Yamaha but cheaper than the KTM and Husky and much better equipped than both. Fingers crossed!! Thanks again for your videos.

looks good fun! could you not put a smaller sprocket on the front to shorten the gear ratios? I've got a 2014 husaberg TE300 but fancy a change perhaps something a bit more reliable ie not ktm,husqvarna etc. Not having a electric start sucks and was thinking could always install a hydraulic clutch kit, maybe a recluse too whats your opinions on this?

I didn’t get the “x” model but I love my 2018 Yz250. It’s so nice, smooth and snappy with the power. It’s awesome for trails but quiet a bit to get used to. Still haven’t been on a track yet but it’s so fun for trails

Great job on the video. I have been looking at getting a Beta 2 stroke or the yz250x, you really have made me lean towards the 250x. I have Yamaha dealer (Heinensmotorsport) right in my town and it is walking distance from my place. The closest Beta dealer is in Iowa about 250 miles away, that really might make my decision for me. Thanks. Keep up the good work. There is a new channel I just found called Dirt n Iron, you have to check him out he does a great job on his videos.

Hows the bottom end torque compared to the KTM 250XC? Ive been on 300s recently but the slow revving nature throws me off. I like the nimble revvy nature of 250s. Ive had numerous YZs over the years, never an X, and ive not ridden the new 250XC. But im looking at a new bike again and im torn between the 250X /250XC or 300XC. I have half the mind to grab the 250x because im comfortable on the YZ platform but ill miss the e start of my Gas Gas 300XC im currently on.

Dirt Bike Channel I also struggled to choose between the 2017 TE 300 and the YX 250x. You can spend a lot trying to bring the Yamaha up to Husky/Ktm standards ( skidplate, handguards, pipe, flywheel weight, etc) and still not get 6th gear, e start, and solid low end torque. It all boils down to where and how you ride. If you primarily ride and enjoy extreme terrain, the KTM/Husky is the better choice. As a factory converted motocross bike, the Y250X belies its heritage. As Kyle says, it is the most fun in many situations, ie everything but really steep and knarly. Figure out where you ride most first. They are both excellent choices.

Great video, you nailed it on the head, it makes you want to come back for more. I'd probably rank this bike and my 05 Rm 250 as two of the best bikes ever. If you ever get to ride an 05-08 Rm that is set up for woods you would love it too. Out of the three tanks I plan to get the Clarke, I think it looks the best. They're heavy at the start of the ride but it actually gets better than stock in handling at half a tank as the fuel is carried lower(cg) than the stock one. I find the neutral problem is a factor on pretty much any bike when you're bouncing around between 1st and 2nd, it may sound crazy but I began to just ride in 2nd and 3rd and avoid 1st altogether. You feather the clutch and carry more speed overall, I've suggested this technique where most people get faster. A friend told me one benefit of the cable clutch is that you get more feedback on what you're doing. If it's fading, you're working it and maybe not being as effective with your clutch/riding. You don't really know what's going on with hydraulic until the bike is starting to steam on a technical situation. The only nice thing is it self adjusts. The yz is a better suspended, better neutral handling bike overall which makes a huge difference.

Good evening , You talk about the gas tank on the YZ and how small it is and It only holds about 2 gallons of fuel . Um the KTM holds 2.3 gallons and the Husky TE250 i holds 2.2 gallons. So does the fuel last longer with the fuel injection than on the carb on the YZ ? I really dont wanna buy another tank after spending anywhere from $8,600 or $12,000 for a dirt bike ? Plus it does'nt make me happy to hear that the 2021 YZ'S are having problems with their tranny going from 1st to 2nd and hitting neutral. So..

Great video Kyle, its obvious you put a lot of time into it thanks! I wanted to comment that i have 100hrs on my 250x now and still hit neutral usually at the worst possible moments... So I think it is common with the X as you mentioned. As far as the lack of skid plates hand guards ect. I actually kinda like that about Yamaha.. I like to pick my own gear or swap stuff from my previous bike...If the bikes were the same price point I would totally agree., Again awesome video man..

2nd gear on the 250X is actually slightly different from the YZ250. Forget how much without my spreadsheet in front of me. I was trying to source WR400 gears for my YZ250 to mix the ratios to build a hybrid narrow/wide range tranny, but wasn't sure how it would work for hare scrambles. Then Yamaha came out with this, which is mostly the same idea I was looking to do, but with the re-worked 2nd. Sounds like it's better than re-gearing the rear with a stock tranny for woods racing, but I've seen a few comments about the 2nd to 3rd gap on the 250X that I wonder if it would be better with the YZ250 original 2nd, or would a big bore, woods ported kit just take care of it.
@matthewriordan-solidaxlesa5810
I would like to know if you would ever consider doing a review on a Yamaha WR250R. I know thats not your style, but I ride a 2017 model and like it. just want to know what you would think about it after a ride

I had a chance to finally ride one. I found that it is indeed geared too high in 1st, clutch is too heavy for a woods bike, and it needs a flywheel weight for a smoother response and lugging capability. It could use a re-gear, but it would definitely need a FWW after that to smooth out the power. It would be way too aggressive without it. I thought it was very easy to start even after a spill. I still have yet to ride the 300. Awesome channel!

Kyle, would you do a quick thoughts video on 250X vs 250FX? I know you don’t have a 250FX anymore, but I need some help. I bought the 250FX, and love the motor but don’t like the weight. Do you believe the 250X is better (lighter feeling, more power, better woods weapon)?
@4Him4u2
@4Him4u2 7 лет назад
Your 2nd to 1st neutral drop is very frustrating. However, this goes away quickly. And, when it goes away, you are left with a very strong transmission which will last the life of the bike. A 52 rear sprocket, flywheel weight, and an bigger tank, you will be golden for years on this bike. You can buy a hydro clutch or go with a Rekluse auto - either are great. Your complaints will resolve with time and proper set up.
