The Airstream Interstate Grand Tour has got everything you'd expect in an Airstream except a warranty worthy of the brand.

** More about this video **
Let's get one thing straight: The 2018 Airstream Interstate Grand Tour Ext isn't inexpensive. The van I reviewed was priced at $168k. You do get a lot of camper van for that amount of money. Starting with the chassis you get a Mercedes Sprinter 170 inch wheelbase speced out with all the options that Mercedes offers including a heated front windshield, heated seats, lane keep assist, collision detection, blind spot detection. In addition you get side view cameras, parking assist and the air suspension option.
The galley features a long Corian counter top, a microwave drawer that opens and closes at a touch of a button, a 6.7 cf compressor refrigerator, a 2 burner stove, sink and lots of storage. The galley is on the passenger side of the van which is nice because it looks out to your campsite. There's a large sliding screen entry door which when opened allows someone working in the kitchen to talk to people outside.
The rear lounge features a sofa that electronically goes down to become a bed. Because the Grand Tour is built on the extended Sprinter chassis there's an extra foot and a half of space behind the sofa and Airstream utilizes it via fold down bed extensions to create an enormous bed measuring 83"x73". The ottomans jackknife to complete the bed setup. There's a 24 inch TV in the rear lounge and plenty of windows to take in the scenery. When you want privacy, automatic day and nighttime shades can be raised and lowered.
The bathroom is a wet bath and is okay in both size and fit and finish. There's no window but there is a rooftop vent fan. There's a cheapish soap dispenser taking up valuable elbow room. The most notable feature about the bathroom is the trademark riveted porthole window in the door.
For all the pluses that the Grand Tour offers there are some significant misses: The refrigerator, while large uses flimsy plastic pieces to keep it closed - no positive locks. Because the bathroom tapers back towards the lounge to give you a bit more aisle-way space the TV sticks out into the aisle and is easily hit. There are cheap plastic coverings over the wheel wells. I would have expected at least carpeting. However the biggest miss on the Grand Tour is it's warranty: 3 years. There are camper vans that cost half as much as the Grand Tour and offer you a 6 year warranty. It is unfortunate that Airstream does not offer a warranty that is befitting of the brand and the price it is asking buyers to pay.
In the end I can only recommend the Grand Tour to those buyers who just have to buy Airstream. If you have deep pockets and don't care about a good warranty but want to own an Airstream class B then you should take a look at the Grand Tour. For everyone else, there are higher quality camper vans available that give you a better warranty at a fraction of the cost.

I have been doing serious research for months on which premium class B van to buy. I really love this floor plan, which is nearly identical to the PleasureWay's Plateau FL, so my search was narrowed to these two coaches. In the end, after your review of both of these vans, and all the blog posts I have read, I have decided on the Airstream Interstate GT. That isn't to say it is perfect. I can live without the positive latching upper cabinets because the extruded aluminum bottom has a large lip helping to prevent the contents from sliding and accidentally opening the door. There are a lot of owner complaints about the electric shades getting stuck open or closed, but the manufacturer of those shades has now published instructions about how to calibrate them. So owners don't have to take the coach back to Airstream to have them repaired (if they don't want to... it is a warrantee type thing, but most people don't want the hassle of taking it back to the dealer and waiting for a repair/recalibration). I'm handy with tools and comfortable just doing such things myself. I have budgeted in my purchase a few upgrades that I believe will make this coach the best on the road. I will immediately remove the stock lead acid batteries and replace them with Li-Ion batteries, and and upgrade the charge controller. I'll also immediately replace the 1000W inverter with a 2000W inverter and add soft-start to the A/C. With these things in place, I will then have a 4X4 capable touring van with air ride suspension, heated water tanks, and will be able to run the A/C on the lithium batteries for at least 8 hours without starting the generator. It will also have side view cameras and every safety feature Mercedes offers on the Sprinter. Yes, it will be more expensive than the PleasureWay. But the air ride, 4X4 capability, and extra safety features were pretty important to my decision.

I am not impressed by Airstream since many years, price don't reflect the quality and features that we found elsewhere, but Neil you always do a very good analysis of the products that you're showing Tks.

many thanks, Claude. I try to be as objective as possible. there are some really nice features in this van but there are also some things that they need to address in order to justify that high price. thank you as always for watching and commenting!

I wrote Airstream off a while ago. Ever since they were bought out they have implemented a bunch of cost cutting/profit enhancing changes, that might be good for the bottom line, but are bad for the consumer. Replacing metal with plastic pieces, skipping latching locks on some of the cabinets, etc. Not far from where I live there is a Airstream get together every year. I made it a point to go and talk to several owners. They all had the same thing to say after replacing an old coach/trailer with a newer model. The quality isn't what it used to be and you have to worry about what you don't see more so than you used to. When inquiring about what you don't see two things came up. The insulation in the walls tends to become unattached and compresses down by the floor over time. You end up with a hollow wall that lets the heat and/or cold through. Roof leaks is the second thing they are complained about. No mater how many times you get it fixed by a dealer it always starts leaking again. As soon as you moved back to the lounge area the TV sticking out in the aisle caught my eye. I was thinking to myself I should point that out in a comment if Neil did not. Silly me, I should have know you wouldn't let something like that get by without pointing it out.

very interesting to hear what other airstream owners are saying. thank you for sharing. I hope airstream is listening for the sake of their valuable brand. the last thing they need is for their brand to become tarnished. of course you knew that is would point out that tv sticking out!

Thank you, Neil. Very informative as always. Eye-wateringly expensive for what it is.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
lol - yes indeed "eye wateringly" expensive. Airstream has the brand recognition to charge that much. if it were any other manufacturer this van would be more reasonably priced.

A wet bath is a non starter. Especially at that price point. I'd steer folks towards a Pleasure Way Plateau XLTD, XLTS, and XLMB.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
Kelly it's true that the quality levels are much higher in a pleasureway but that's also why PW gives you a 5 year warranty.
@flyfish6473
@flyfish6473 6 лет назад
K. Clark - You're comparing apples to oranges. The Plateau XL(x), while very nice, are wide body/B+ camper vans, essentially a class C and are a foot wider than this van. That's a huge amount of space not available in a true class B. Designing a dry bath into a true class B is difficult given the space constraints. If you need a dry bath then all true class B's on the market today are not going to give you what you desire. I can't think of any true class B, off the top of my head, that offers a dry bath. Class C motor homes offer all kinds of options for dry baths, but that's not what is being reviewed here.
@eggsnspam

Kelly, I just looked and there are NO Pleasure Way class B of this same size (apples to apples) that DOESN'T have a wet bath.

Congrats on the 10K subs! Before you know it I’ll be able to say I knew you way back when before you were a celebrity 😀😀. Something I’ve been meaning to ask you. Not sure if you knew this but before I retired I was a professional Chef. One of my priorities is an excellent kitchen. In most B and B+ vans the kitchen is sometimes an afterthought. For me personally I’d much rather have a propane oven but have yet to see one in an American van (Europe has them). I don’t have a microwave at home so wouldn’t use one in a van. Seems like my only option is a convection microwave for a stove. I’m considering retrofitting to a propane stove but that could be costly. Or taking out the microwave and installing a large toaster oven as a substitute. Breville makes a nice toaster oven. I’m curious in the B and B + vans you’ve seen which would you say has some of the nicer kitchens?
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
oh wow that's a great question. some of the European models, especially the british ones have propane stoves and wonderful kitchens. here in north America I can't really think of any class b or b+ van that has a great kitchen. honestly. almost all of them are cookie cutter and give you the basics. Winnebago has some models on the Era lines that have 3 propane burners for their stoves. most give you shallow sinks and not enough prep area. on some british models you can get a stove with 3 burners plus an electric one! not even an option here. In general most Americans don't value food as much as Europeans and when camping it is valued even less. Check out Humble Road's videos. George is building out his own van and he loves cooking. His build out included an EIGHT FOOT kitchen counter!

C McAllister I probably won't review any Carado vans until their quality improves. I've been inside two of them is so many months and the quality was so low that I didn't feel I could provide a review that would be of service to my viewers. will continue to monitor them to see if their quality continues to improve to a minimum level where I can review them.

EATING CROW!! In one of your earlier videos you described the beauty and detail of radius cabinet doors and I said to myself "They are nice but what's the big deal?" UNTIL I went to my local Pleasureway dealer this weekend and looked at the Ascent with the same color scheme as yours but with the flat panel doors. The craftmanship is there but the radius doors lift the appearance significantly. Did not see the price for the upgraded cabinets but they are definitely worth it. Are they expensive? CNCs may help this remain an affordable option YT Video: How It's Made Curved Cabinet Doors

lol well thank you very much. for MY 2019 they are only offer the white chocolate curved radius cabinets. I heard they may discontinue them because the laminate is not meeting their quality levels. the option was a couple grand I believe.

Tessie there are a lot of options for you and your husband for a couples' van. I really like vans with lots of windows and light and no obstructions from front to back. I prefer the rear lounge configuration with a front lounge if possible as a second living space.

I am a former owner of an Airstream Interstate Westfalia Mercedes Sprinter Diesel Class B and it was a great vehicle but the retrofits for the US market were not executed well. I kept the RV until the retrofits starting becoming major irritations. Airstream has made great strides in improving quality but I think being under a large company like Thor Industries means volume is the priority over quality (hence the low warranty period). I rented a 2012 Mercedes Sprinter Westfalia James Cook (a mouthful) on holiday in Spain and wished a manufacturer in the states would consider this sort of design. I have a 2017 GT and find the bed surprisingly comfortable (without a topper). When climbing in you have to be careful not to put your knees on the material covered metal protector (between the jump seats and the couch) The jump seats and the couch are more comfortable than other brands I have tried out as they are contour shaped and not just flat (no contour shape) chunks of material.

Hi Neil another great video. This one is way overpriced and if airstream thinks they are going to best in class then that means they have to have the best warranty and they don’t which means they are not as best as they THINK ....... would rather buy a Ltv or Pw van which has a much better warranty and lots more logical space layout. Any idea when your going to do the unity MB as i think that everyone will love the layout the great full shower and all the versatility it offers...... cant wait to hear from you soon ......thanks and again great job

dang... for that kind of money you can get a small sticks and bricks abode in a small town. It kinda sounds like a tin can when you are maneuvering the features. Also no way I'd pay that and not have dry bath. Of course I could never afford it, but this helps me feel just fine about my want for a used PW Pursuit with a dry bath :o)

PW Pursuit's are B+/Class C vans. I can't think of any true class B van on the market today that will give you a dry bath. Class B+/C are not being reviewed here. Although I agree this Airstream is over priced for what you get, we need to keep in mind what it is not.

allentown Gal - I saw your chat post on the Wendlands RV Lifestyle podcast asking Lori Grosse what make her class B is that has a dry bath, and if it's a class B+ or not. Here is a link to a list of class B manufacturers from WeretheRussos website. It may be possible there is a manufacturer that will make a true class B with a dry bath. I know Advanced-RV does high-end custom builds and they may produce a true class B with a dry bath. Just a thought. weretherussos.com/class-b-rv-manufacturers-list-camper-vans/

@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
oh wow John... that's a really hard one. I really love the Plateau FL in white chocolate curved radius cabinetry. however, we have guests in town this week and today I took all 6 of us into San Francisco to see all the sites and sounds. I took the Ascent. No way I would have taken the Plateau. Too long. I found parking for the Ascent no problem. Driving is heavy downtown SF traffic - no problem. Huge picture windows for seeing the sites - no problem! I'm waiting for a better van than the Ascent. Honestly.
@ran6110
@ran6110 6 лет назад
I'm not Neil but can I pipe in here? If money were no object I'd go to Advanced RV and have them build a custom rig of my own design. If money isn't too much of an object then I look at George over at Humble Road is marking out and building his own van and plans to sell it (and a few more) when he's finished. If I haven't picked a current unit by then I would seriously give his work some serious thought. Now, if money is an object then I'd pick one of the Pleasure-Way Lexor units. Even though they have 3-way refrigerators, small LP capacity and only 200AH of lithium batteries the build quality more than makes up for these little problems. With a gas generator and the ability to turn it on automatically when the batteries get low almost make it as flexible as the underhood generator (yes, it is a custom alternator but let's use Roadtreks term) Roadtrek has!
@ran6110
@ran6110 6 лет назад
I've found I really, really like the short body units not only for in-town but also on the road. They are much easier to manage in every traffic situation. Funny thing, I was at a campground in Northern Nevada in a Zion SRT and the manager initially said he had no spots but when he came outside and saw what I was driving he said he had just the spot! Turns out they had one spot behind the office for the old style van conversions that was exactly 20 feet! He gave it to me for half-price since I didn't need any hookups, I really lucked out and slept well that night!
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
lol - thanks for sharing that! such are the benefits of having a short camper van! parking in San Francisco for me is my test. If I'm comfortable driving a rig in San Francisco and am able to find parking on a street then that's the rig for me. I can't overemphasize the benefit of being able to drive a van into a big city and parking. it opens up worlds of possibilities. and if you're out on a trip and cannot find a camping spot - the length means you can just pull into a motel parking night and sleep for the night. honestly, I did this coming across the country last year. works like a charm. harder to do with a bigger rig.

If you watch the European RV RU-vid shows, you can get very nice small Class B type RVs for 60,000 Euros. That's about $70,000. The prices on American Class B RVs do not make sense. Say the van shells are $40,000 to the manufacturers. They do not add $100,000 worth of value by putting their interiors in, though they try to sell them for $140,000 or so. Someone needs to start importing those European models into America. They would sell like hot cakes.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
so a couple things. north American coach builders buy the top of the line Mercedes chassis. those run for $54k not $40k. Then they use top of the line components for things like 2000w inserters, roof top air conditioners, permanent propane storage tanks, large solar arrays, lithium battery banks, multiplex wiring, secondary generators, remote start, secondary underhood alternators and the like. these additional components are not found generally on European models and add significantly to the cost.
@johnnyfraley2270
@johnnyfraley2270 6 лет назад
I think there is a huge market in North America for the European type, less expensive, back to basics Class B RV. Maybe you should go to some of the big RV shows in Europe and report on those. How fun would that be! Watch the Tour de France and see the fleet of small RVs parked along the route. I just don't get how those type vehicles are not even available here for the consumer to choose from. I love your channel!

Great Job breaking down the 2018 Airstream Interstate Grand Tour Ext! Airstream make some really classy looking rides! I'm a musician and have to carry a keyboard and small pa so I love the extra space in the back. The TV sticking out like that is an accident ready to happen. Airstream brags about their workmanship and style. Even getting Mercedes to allow them to have the Mercedes Star in the back. I LOVE Airstreams! But that bathroom is barely functional. I’ve looked at them, the sink and soap dispensers are absolutely in your way when you shower. You can remove the soap dispenser but then you have 4 holes to patch and stare at forever. The sink should be a fold down type -or- there needs to be 4" more room in the bathroom in order to turn around.

Wonderful review...The Airstream asking/listing price for this class B vehicle is ludicrous....Your camera should not be shaking with the vibrations of moving around in the van and your shoes shouldn't squeak when walking. The style of flooring that you are admiring is a non-skid floor.., not rubber soled friendly but bare foot friendly which makes it perfect for beaches, fishing, lake, river camping,, any place where water can be found.. Also included in this arrogant pricing is a new interior hygiene design wording. They went from a "Wet-bath" and opted for a "Sponge Bath" room and jacked the price. Ugh,, that's Airstream,, EX.A.:/

Naw, too much money for too little exceptional pieces. Airstream is obviously fixating on how much they think their 'iconic name' is worth and is charging what the market will bear. I hope Airstream realizes that they are diluting their brand - their brand is their most valuable asset but it is clear from reading these comments that people are wise to their cost cutting.

I don't think they really care beyond giving lip service to their brand and history. I know a few people that have the newer trailers and they all feel that once you strip back the facade the underlying quality is missing. Like most corporations, they are after the short term results now. Keep the prices high and cut the quality and increase the profit margin. In fact, I think the problem with most of the manufacturers is that they've switched quality control to the customer.

ranTrek it's a great point you make about pushing quality control downstream to the customer. I see it everywhere and the problem is dealerships aren't setup for that kind of change and customers shouldn't have to be beta teeters on $100k vans. Like Dean at PW says: there will be a downturn in the market and then these other coach manufacturers will have to pay their price of their short term thinking.
