The Airstream Interstate Grand Tour has got everything you'd expect in an Airstream except a warranty worthy of the brand.

Let's get one thing straight: The 2018 Airstream Interstate Grand Tour Ext isn't inexpensive. The van I reviewed was priced at $168k. You do get a lot of camper van for that amount of money. Starting with the chassis you get a Mercedes Sprinter 170 inch wheelbase speced out with all the options that Mercedes offers including a heated front windshield, heated seats, lane keep assist, collision detection, blind spot detection. In addition you get side view cameras, parking assist and the air suspension option.
The galley features a long Corian counter top, a microwave drawer that opens and closes at a touch of a button, a 6.7 cf compressor refrigerator, a 2 burner stove, sink and lots of storage. The galley is on the passenger side of the van which is nice because it looks out to your campsite. There's a large sliding screen entry door which when opened allows someone working in the kitchen to talk to people outside.
The rear lounge features a sofa that electronically goes down to become a bed. Because the Grand Tour is built on the extended Sprinter chassis there's an extra foot and a half of space behind the sofa and Airstream utilizes it via fold down bed extensions to create an enormous bed measuring 83"x73". The ottomans jackknife to complete the bed setup. There's a 24 inch TV in the rear lounge and plenty of windows to take in the scenery. When you want privacy, automatic day and nighttime shades can be raised and lowered.
The bathroom is a wet bath and is okay in both size and fit and finish. There's no window but there is a rooftop vent fan. There's a cheapish soap dispenser taking up valuable elbow room. The most notable feature about the bathroom is the trademark riveted porthole window in the door.
For all the pluses that the Grand Tour offers there are some significant misses: The refrigerator, while large uses flimsy plastic pieces to keep it closed - no positive locks. Because the bathroom tapers back towards the lounge to give you a bit more aisle-way space the TV sticks out into the aisle and is easily hit. There are cheap plastic coverings over the wheel wells. I would have expected at least carpeting. However the biggest miss on the Grand Tour is it's warranty: 3 years. There are camper vans that cost half as much as the Grand Tour and offer you a 6 year warranty. It is unfortunate that Airstream does not offer a warranty that is befitting of the brand and the price it is asking buyers to pay.
In the end I can only recommend the Grand Tour to those buyers who just have to buy Airstream. If you have deep pockets and don't care about a good warranty but want to own an Airstream class B then you should take a look at the Grand Tour. For everyone else, there are higher quality camper vans available that give you a better warranty at a fraction of the cost.
