2018 Ducati Monster 797 Review: For some reason the Ducati Monster range has somewhat passed me by...until now! When I recently took my 899 Panigale for a service at the local Ducati dealer they kindly loaned me the baby Monster for the day as a courtesy bike, in this video I share my first impressions of this entry machine into the exotic world of Ducati (and hope sometime soon to be able to try it's bigger brothers!).
Many thanks to the service team at On Yer Bike in Aylesbury for making the bike available to me to ride.

Revisiting this review. I’ve owned this bike for three months now, my first my big bike, bought at 380 miles as an ex Dec17 demo. I’m really enjoying it, the negatives are that it was very hard to find neutral, though with 1000 miles on the clock now, it’s getting better. The turning circle is terrible, above 70mph, the wind buffeting isn’t great. Positives, I just love riding it, it’s confidence inspiring, you’re right, there isn’t any sudden surges in power, it’s quite friendly. It’s very light and great in traffic. The seat is comfy, I personally can see everything in the mirrors. It’s nice owning a Ducati, the paint work on the tank is lovely. I miss a gear change indicator, I’m always searching for the next gear, even though I’m in 6th. I don’t really need a fuel gauge, the fuel indicator light is fine and I know I have 25-50 miles left when the light comes on. I’ll get the termi pipe in time, though no rush, I’m just enjoying my weekend rides. 😊

Had one as a loaner for a few days ... thought it was great at first but found my tailbone sore after 30miles and the gearbox became very clunky when hot. Had issues getting out of first gear and couldn't get neutral until it cooled down. If I had paid for one, I would be very disappointed

The engine is bloody brilliant, I know that much. My dad owns a Desert Sled, which is the same engine (not too sure if they're in the same state of tune though), and being 70-odd brake, it's just got bags of character and it's just so much fun

Probably resetting the odometer would be more reliable than any kind of fuel gauge you can economically fit to a bike with that would be accurate +/-50 miles!

Good to see you back on two wheels ol' cobber! I've changed my name, just got rid of "The". When I went looking at the monster range, I too was impressed at the fit and finish of the entry level bike. I actually rode the 821 along side the 1200, and was impressed how powerful it was against the 1200. The bigger one just had more torque, although the 821 sounded raspier, a little more angrier. Mr Flyer when you ride one of the 1200's, do go for the Ohlins fork bike. Either the S or the R model. The setup is sublime, a bit like that MT10SP you liked a lot. I end up dropping the MT10SP purchase, as I can only fit 2 bikes in my garage :-(. The second will have to be the GS after I get rid of the RR. I got the monster R in the end. Your gonna luv the bigger brothers. They can cruise nicely like a small bike with a small engine, as if they dont have power, nice and cruisey, and when you flick the throttle, they become sport bikes. This is what I loved about the Monster. Not to say that the MT10SP was also sublime to handle through the twisties. Gosh I love Ohlins kit!!! Keep groovin groover ;-)

@saddle8bag

No one ever teaches people how to adjust mirrors. Cars, bikes, whatever, they should be set WIDE. They are not rearview mirrors. They are there to let you know if someone is beside you before you decide to change lanes. If you see your shoulders, they aren't properly adjusted. I realize that on bikes we have no rearview and we tend to want to use them for that. Perhaps use the left one more for that as it's easier to head check on the side you can let of of the bar. Thing is, sometimes there isn't time to be swinging your head around. Better to have the mirrors set properly. They usually have adjustments down by the handlebar too. If you need to check for someone you've left behind, you can always lean over a bit to see what's behind you.
@iamtherealzombie
@iamtherealzombie 6 лет назад
Never been stopped at a set of lights? That's when I like to see what's coming up behind me. I'd rather shoulder check when I'm changing lanes than sit looking rearwards the entire time I'm at a traffic signal watching for a driver who is texting as they pull up to a set of lights.
@saddle8bag
@saddle8bag 6 лет назад
Yeah, but when I am, I'm over to the side of the vehicle in front of me so I can boogie around if someone is approaching fast. Also, when I'm stopped, I can turn the bars a bit to get a good look behind me if needed. My bikes actually have mirrors set out far enough and are large enough that they can capture a good view of the sides and back. Sportbikes are notorious for being small and in close, but the riders should be aiming them out to the sides, not at their arms. Then again, I see women aiming their rearview mirror at their lips to apply makeup on their way to work. I'm just telling you how they were designed to be used. Like many functions of human made contraptions; nobody knows or cares. For instance, did you know that the little cups to put ketchup in at the fast food joint weren't designed to be used as cups? The reason they're crinkled is so they can be unsprung and laid flat once you get them back to the table. Much easier to dip like that.

Sure, it's not a desmosedici, but does everything have to have mega power and the most expensive components to be of any use or fun? Surely not. I found it very torquey, more so than the MT07. The bike definitely has character. The orange fuel light came on and so I only had 15 miles left in the tank. It’s annoying not having a fuel gauge, though I didn’t miss the gear indicator too much. 😊

TheMissendenFlyer still in the early stages, I have a test ride booking for the new MT07 this month and I’m going to get a ride on the GSX-S750 which I like the look of. The Ducati was nice, finding neutral wasn’t easy though. I’ll report back! 😊

TheMissendenFlyer I had a chat with the guys in BMW Park Lane yesterday as well and they said I could test ride the F800R. I went down to look at the bike, not sure on that one. I noticed you reviewed that bike way back in 2014!

Good review! This is my second bike after Honda cb500f (wanted to learn on something not intimidating). I’m used to 797 now and it’s a fantastic machine for around town. I’m 6ft 1 and fat lol. The bike is only cramped for me to if I try to tuck in and hang off the bike in corner, otherwise it’s fine for me personally. Neutral sucks lol. Oh and I am THAT person that bought the white one lol. Every Ducati is red, I wanted to differentiate a little bit. I’m happy with white

Picked mine up last Friday, have the same Termi can, glad to be shut of the Street Twin. I agree a gear indicator would be useful occasionally , say when approaching a roundabout, but I don't miss a fuel gauge as its hardly worth filling a bike til its nearly empty. I much prefer the system on the 797 where when the light comes on it initiates a separate trip counting from when the 4 litre "reserve" begins. That's much more use to me. Anyway, many thanks MF, for bringing this to my attention, it is absolute joy.

Yup. It is a no nonsense fun bike. It may be priced at a premium, but the components and design make up for it. Also as much as anyone denies the brand 'Ducati' holds something special for an enthusiasts heart.

hey i previously rode crutch rockets then harleys, now looking to get a nice bike for around the city ..maybe odd ride out some country roads. Im 6'1" 220 . Just want something nice that still pulls as hard as a 96" Harley that gets me from point a to b fun and comfortable. Would you say it would be what I'm looking for ???
@ashishkumar7419
@ashishkumar7419 6 лет назад
For reference I am 6'1" and 205. I find the riding position less aggressive than something like a street triple (and less cramped). Being a twin you will not miss the low end torque as much. I would say give it a try.

Great review as usual TMF. You are the gift that keeps on giving! Beautiful bike, but would love to hear your thoughts comparing it with the Suzuki SV650. Much less money, same power, Characterful V twin, and has both fuel gauge and gear indicator. Well done again sir.

Great sounding bike but for that price you should have a fuel gauge and gear indicator. While I love Ducati I’d opt for the MT07, similar specs, includes a fuel gauge and gear indicator and is less expensive.

Great review as always Mr Flyer. was interesting as well on the heated gloves you were wearing. Checked out the vlog on the Weiss gloves and noticed the padded?puffa? Jacket that you had on. Do you know the make and model of the jacket as it would make a great summer jacket for the trike I ride. Thanks in anticipation and keep on producing the quality vlogs you're turning out. 'Tis a good looking bike that! Like the look, like the sound. Stirling work riding around in the cold. Very much enjoyed that while sitting on a radiator here! No fuel gauge is a serious feux pas in my view. Agree on the no frills approach. I would agree ABS is a great safety feature and a must have (and of course now it's mandated)....but also thinking traction control would make it on my list of basic requirements these days as well.....and given ABS means you automatically have the wheel speed sensors..I wonder how hard traction control would be for manufacturers to add.....Stirling work as ever. No shocks after the service I hope?

All bikes all categories and types this is the best looking coolest bike ever made. All things considered. Yes there are more powerful Monsters but just the looks. The V4 street fighter is the most raw, hard and coolest bike built but this one especially in read beats everything. The Honda Hornet 750 gets the price of the ugliest. Yes you make sure to point out looks is subjective. Merely saying. Cheers

I've had 3 Monsters (620, 695, and 1100S), and they were all great, and I hope to own one again in the future (my current naked is a Street Triple), but despite that, can I get in my usual gripe about lack of clear coat? It's inconsistent, but basically, as with the Panigales, only the top end of the range comes with clear coat on the red paintwork.
