I own one and love it. Every review complains about the rear door but it is actually a benefit. When parked at say the grocery store or wal mart the eco sport is small. So you can fully open the door and it will fit in the lines perfectly and you can unload your stuff. Also the door protects you and your kids when you are dropping them off and they are taking there stuff out the back. I am 6'2 so door that opens upwards would be annoying for myself. Also I have the 2.0 with AWD. Again the reviewers are wrong for the performance. Put it in sport mode and trunk off traction control. It pulls you back in the seat. The AWD is awesome when cornering hard in the turns especially on dirt etc. I power slide mine with 3 people in it. Everybody who rides in it complements the smooth ride.

Great review! In Brazil the EcoSport has been sold since 2004, it was a phenomenon, for 8 years was the class leader in the subcompact suv segment (in the first 3 years there was only him actually). In 2014, when HR-V and Renegade arrives, the EcoSport loses the "power". Even with this refresh that is sold in US, the sales didn't grow a lot. Still in the top 10's, but not even close to the hit it was in the past. The EcoSport is a tiny vehicle even here, in Brazil, where the Fusion is considered a big car.

Thank you for the review. I bought the SES trim model with AWD a week ago. As a city dweller, it’s the prefect car for riding higher and still being able to parallel park in a tight spot. The fuel economy is meh but most city driving is. Finally, the seats are just fine for this Rubenesque fellow.

Got the same thing. Honestly, it is pretty nice for living in the city. It is easy to park, moves around pretty easily, and is comfortable. If they made a Focus Hatchback in 4wd and a decent transmission without it being an RS, I would have gotten that. The fact is, they don't, and this is what they do make that fits what I wanted. Other factor - my wife liked it. There is a lot to be said for a car that my wife is willing to drive. I take what I can get.

Have the SE with the Nav package and the cold weather package and are leasing for $266.00 per month with sales and property taxes, and the dealer made the last 2 payments on our Edge. Great value, just need to look past the MSRP, because there are plenty of rebates and low lease, and financing out there. From what I read here most people don't know how to bargain when buying or leasing a new car, or even go to the Ford Website to see real numbers.

Great review as always! I checked this out at the Chicago Auto show and was really surprised by how cheap it felt. A swing gate rear door is an automatic boot for me (get it?). Senseless when standard lift gate designs exist. It's thirsty too. At 27k at the top end is laughable. If the base price was in line with something like the Nissan Kicks I'd be more willing to forgive it's shortcomings, but even then there are better options.

Kicks is only front wheel drive and you can get a Ecosport AWD, 2.0 Liter under 21K with 2.9% for up to 84 months, or lease for under $200.00 with the $3000.00 rebate on leases. Just because the MSRP is a certain amount, doesn't mean you pay it. For less than a used car you can own a new one with a full warranty.

Windows phone, ouch, that was harsh! .... Honestly though I think Windows if they had a better app selection could have had real potential on the market, but Microsoft just didn't invest anything into the apps, it is like making a well equipped CTS-V without an engine. Just sad. I had to pause it when you made the "if you require this much TP, your vacation is probably ruined" comment, I was laughing so much!! Excellent review as always Tom!

Damnit Ford... Just stop, you can't have Eco-boost and spell it as Eco-sport, then expect consumers to say "Echo-sport" it's just dumb (sounds dumb too) lol. Also if this is the future of Ford vehicles to replace the sedans being removed from the lineup come 2020, what a leap into mediocrity. :P

Own an ses your video about this is very wrong as someone who lives in a snow climate the awd is amazing and the space is great I’ve had a kona, focus st and a crv and to be honest this is the most fun for the buck ( Ford is giving amazing rebates! 10k off sticker!) the transmission is smooth it’s power delivery punch off the light and then gets on to 60 it’s not a world champion accelerator but for city driving it amazing and I’m averaging 30 mpg in the city soooo screw the ctv competitors this thing ROCKS!

I’ve only seen 3 EcoSports throughout the whole year and 2 of which were rental vehicles. The one I saw at a Walmart a week ago was the base model with the spare tire on the back door.

Just out of curiosity whenever I'm on a car lot I tend to check out the window stickers of cars I'm not familiar with, even if I'm not interested in it. As I approached the EcoSport on a Ford lot I was thinking this odd thing is either priced just over $20K or gets 35 mpg - maybe even both. Nope...$27K for 25 mpg...Utter disbelief. Damn, what's the point of this monstrosity?

Why is it that he has a problem with the tailgate on this car, but not on a Jeep Wrangler? It still has a swing out gate. That’s not a deal breaker.

Here's why- Wrangler has its tire on the rear door because mounting the spare underneath could keep it from being accessed if the Jeep is in a tricky situation. EcoSport one doesn't have a spare on the back door so it could easily be a lift gate (which is more practical for a number of reasons).

I suspect that the reason they have the swing gate on the Ford is because it was originally designed to have a tire on the back and the base model (of the 2018) still has it. Strange that they didn’t keep the tire for the upper trims and instead gave the fix a flat. Anyway, thanks for the detailed review. Always enjoy them, plus the sense of humor. 👍🏾

I always enjoy Tom's reviews, irregardless of how I feel about the car he's testing. Can't say I think much about this one, seems like a very poor value proposition for what amounts to another bland transportation box. When all is said and done and the Fiesta/Focus/Fusion/Taurus are all gone, the price for the cheapest Ford sold in the US will have gone up by about $4500 (Fiesta vs. ECHO-sport).

SUV in any shape and size became popular for the following rasons: - raised seat position gives you (false) sense of security - extended height allows for easy access and since over the years people got fat, lazy and their backs don't work properly there is demand for that - SUV started as offroad vehicles and are still advertised as such, even tho they're often only FWD and wouldn't stand a chance with deep mud with their slicky tires and overly open rims, BUT people still like to feel they can go to the woods, they want to feel somewhat connected to the nature. That's something common among city folks.

It has better clearance and easier entry. Sitting position is more natural. Sedan/hatchback are good for handling and fuel economy, but they are harder to enter/exit, and don’t see as far.

I had a Focus hatchback. It didn't have 4WD. This does. It was a simple decision for me. I wanted a similar size vehicle for living in the city in the north east. I have no kids but I have a Great Dane. This vehicle is perfect for my use case.

I never seen a company misstep so much. The sole engine here should have been the 1.5T that Ford already makes! Instead, one is too weak, the other too big with no torque. Both offer poor MPG against the competition.

If you're from Seattle, you should have a good rain coat. I'll take the Soul+/! over this and much of the competition; from there it's the Honda Fit (manual). Ouch, $27k for tiny "luxury"...Hopefully they'll leave the dealer at much lower prices.

Roughly about the same as the Toyota CHR and that one has less hp than the EcoSport so the additional hp doesn’t mean squat. Only good thing about the EcoSport is the high ground clearance. Other than that, it’s not worth the money.

Basically a reinvented Ford Festival crossover. I'm gonna keep my eyes on the Hyundai Kona Electric. Great build quality, nice styling, functional interior, enough battery distance to not complain and fair price tag.

Sad to see Ford dropping some good cars (in the US market) while introducing, uh, stuff like this. Still, the blame lies with American consumers. Can't see Ford selling many. Looks like a stop gap to put something, anything in the sub-compact suv space. If they're serious the rear barn door won't last long. Same with a gas slurping weak engine option. But who knows. Maybe the tall driving position will appeal to enough short consumers to make it a minor success.

I would buy an Accord assembled in Marysville, Ohio than buy an EcoSport assembled in Chennai, India. Accord more expensive but has better quality, fuel efficiency and reliability. Can’t say how reliable the EcoSport is since this is the first time it entered the US market.

They might not sell much to consumers, but they will sell a shit ton to rental companies. Expect to see these flood rental lots all over the nation, especially since Focus and Fusions will soon be no more.

You're probably not the target demographic for this. This has been a very popular vehicle in India and South America, and they are introducing it to the United States because Indians and Hispanics are flooding into parts of the US (like Houston, where one is the largest demographic now and the other the fastest growing group, with non-hispanic Caucasians making up only 22.1% of the city and even less if you look at children under the age of 10). Demographics have shifted, and so car choices will shift with it. You don't like it because its not meant for you.

DumbDuck44: Sorry, I don't think so. Having lived for 20+ years within shouting distance of the main Microsoft campus I can assure you that I'm very familiar with the changing demographics of the American population. And for the record, I think it's a very positive change. In this case, the EcoSport just isn't a very good car. Compare it, for example, to the Kia Soul and the Ford's only advantage is the availability of AWD. Otherwise, the Soul, for about the same price, is a far better vehicle.

I don't get this vehicle at all. It's not cheap and cheerful, the 27k price tag for this Trim level seems ridiculous for low quality of material (and that awful MPG, EcoBoost indeed). It honestly seems Ford brought over a very basic vehicle, slapped on some items Americans expect and put a bad price tag on it. If they're gonna get rid of most of their offerings, at least offer something that's absolutely compelling. Either bottom low price or semi-luxury affordable. I absolutely wanted to buy a Ford ST or RS, guess I'll look at the VW GTI or R.

There are large rebates for leases, $3000.00 and 2.9% for up to 84 months, plus a $1500.00 rebate to help you with your down payment. You can by the S model with AWD and the 2.0L for under 21k, and leases are under 200 per month. That is less than what you would pay for a used car, and you have a new SUV with a warranty.

166 hp isn't horrible for a vehicle this small. But 0-60 in 10+ seconds!? What's with that?! Horrible with bad fuel economy. There is no positive trade off. Why would some buy this?

We get 30 MPG with ours in New England, and our highways are full of hills. About 26 MPG in town the 2.0L with AWD. If we lived where roads were flat we would be about 33 MPG.

This was such a misstep for Ford. They should have waited til the full redesign was due instead of offering this mid cycle refresh. It is old and shows. There’s literally no reason to get this over an escape. I also don’t see how this makes up for not offering a fiesta anymore. The price point is a huge difference.

Had it in England for a while it’s slow and uses a lot of petrol it’s pointless as far as car goes and the boot (trunk) is hinged like that as you can have a spare tire on the back

Yeah considering manufacturers make them and in order to attract it’s target market of millennials, they load them up (most of them as least) with a lot of tech. A good example would be the Nissan Kicks SR. Lots of tech and under $24,000

You should have seen the first gen from ten+ years ago. It had a more rugged, more SUV-like look. But it was awful

Ford is messing with the English language. It should be spelled EchoSport, not EcoSport if they wanted it pronounced that way. What we have here is another Kansas/Arkansas situation.

Subarus and Camrys are built in Lafayette, In.Toyota has a production line in southern Indiana.Honda builds mostly Civics two counties over from Indianapolis in Gréensburg, In.

@@timblaker7138 And the money goes to support the Japanese economy no matter where the Japanese POS is built. Ford employs many more Americans and has many more plants in the USA than Toyota or Honda has.

Ford is dead to me. We don't get the new Fiesta ST like the rest domthe world but we get a re tread India CUV thing that is way overpriced, dated, and slow. Garbage.

They're not dead to me but they're not first on my list either. I am intrigued to see what they do with the Fusion, rumor is that it's going to become an awd wagon to compete with the Outback.
